Wolfenstein: The Old Blood arrives today on PS4

Check out the explosive prequel to last year’s The New Order

In last year’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, the series’ staple protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz manages to snap out of a coma, remove himself from the wheelchair he’s been confined to for decades, and quickly move on to his favourite pastime: killing Nazis. Seemingly an impossible feat… but by the time you complete Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, out today, you’ll realise it’s just another day at the office for Blazkowicz.

The Old Blood is a prequel to The New Order offering the same high-intensity, story-driven, first-person action players have come to expect from the game’s developer MachineGames. The story unfolds as B.J. and ally spy Agent One begin an undercover mission to infiltrate the infamous Castle Wolfenstein (longtime fans of the series will appreciate MachineGames’ nods to the 2001 classic, Return to Castle Wolfenstein) in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead’s compound.

B.J.’s battles within Castle Wolfenstein are what legends are made of, but Castle Wolfenstein only represents the game’s first act: Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves. Serving as the warden of Castle Wolfenstein’s prison, Jäger might seem like the most sinister villain you’ll meet — until you reach the game’s second act, The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs.

A renowned archaeologist in the Nazi party, Von Schabbs heads the party’s SS Paranormal division, and her passion for the occult will lead to very bad things. How bad? Have a look at the game’s new launch trailer embedded above.

To help Blazkowicz through these near-impossible odds, MachineGames has added a number of weapons worthy of the FPS Hall of Fame. It begins with a multi-purpose metal pipe that can be used to traverse and break walls, and also execute enemies with one- and two-handed melee attacks. Of course The Old Blood has its fair share of memorable guns, too. The new bolt-action rifle packs a powerful punch and is perfect for long-range sniping. And if you find yourself in a real jam, take advantage of the Kampfpistole — a pocket-sized rocket launcher!

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is available today on PS4; you can download it from PlayStation Store for £14.99/€19.99/AU$39.95, or pick up a physical copy on 15th May.

  • Any estimates on how long it is?

    • Matt Grandstaff

I would ballpark it at 7-10 hours. But mileage may vary.

I died quite a bit my first playthrough. Some really challenging sequences.

  • The New Order was one of my favourite games from last year. I’m extremely excited for the prequel, but I’ll wait a week to pick up the physical edition.

  • Why is physical released 10 days after digital? I’d also like to know how long it is as the 15th is really close to Witcher 3

    • I’d like to know why the physical delay too…or perhaps we’re just getting the digital early? It is a touch annoying, I want to play it but would rather own the disc…it’s only 10 days I suppose. I’ve heard anything from 6-10 hrs play time…51 trophies and a Plat so pretty decent for a £15 game if you ask me! :)

The same reason as for dying light, to sell more digital copies.

Same reason as dying light, to sell more digital copies

    • Actually Dying Light had a packaging issue that meant the entire EU stock couldn’t be sold. And in their defemse they made all of the DLC bar one of them free for everyone by way of apology.

Maybe thats the thruth truemurton, but nevertheless they sure did benefit from it. Butvthen again, dying light might be one of the best games I have played this year, and actually still plays. And well worth the money.

Only negative thing with DL is that it destroyed every other parkourish game out there for me, dunno how many times I tried and failed to climb unto a roof in far cry when being chased by a tiger :)

  • Erm, its Tuesday. That’s two weeks in a row now that we’ve seen new games released on a Tuesday. So why can’t the entire store update on a Tuesday and allow the EU to get its IGC update on time every time without the self imposed delay when the first Wednesday happens to be the 1st of the month?

    • Tbh I think we are definitely moving that way . Last week it was said this would be happening more regularly . It’s happening stealthily , but it is happening . I reckon it won’t be long till digitally at least we are totally in line with the U.S

    • I think it’s safe to say it it ever does happen our update would be about 6-8pm to allow US to update on the West coast in the morning. We’ll never be allowed to be first.

  • Playing it right now … a lot of running around with a pipe melee weapon and no guns … and shutting off electricity supply to stun then take down enemies. I could tolerate it … but they’re very long segments in a very short game. It’s supposed to be an FPS.

There’s also a long opening of not holding a gun… something New Order was criticised for heavily.

Bit of a remorse buy honestly … I hope it gets better.

    • Grim_streaker999

Agree. Not bying/playing a fps like wolfenstein to sneak around and be underwhelmed.

*slight spoiler* now why on earth would he throw away a big ass gun everytime he enters a door? *spoiler end*

And the soldier throw way to many nades, can’t stay in a spot for more than 2sec due to that.
Whats the point with a peak’n’shoot option when u can’t use it?

Just a couple hours in, but those two segments made me dislike the game so far.

  • First two hours have been almost entirely non-playable following NPCs or stealth …

    Urgh. That’s what I get for pre-ordering.

  • Now there’s on on-rails section with a mounted machine gun on a boat … oh jeez.

This game is horrible for at least the first half as far as I can see.

  • The game is so easy even on Uber difficulty ahhhhh what have you done

There’s so little shooting, I’ve felt no adrenaline all night

  • I’m more concerned about where my preorder download of project cars is which they charged for on Monday. The game unlocks to be playable in 22 hours and they still haven’t sorted out the download. What’s the hold up? Wolfensteins huge 38gb download is hogging all the limited amount of bandwidth ps store seems to provide…?

  • Again physical is cheaper – Pre-ordered for £13.85 :-)
I have no idea why people buy digital downloads.

  • Loved new Order. I’ll be picking this up but I pre-ordered the physical release for a game of this size. Looking forward to it!

  • No way I m buying the digital version with this 500go hard drive.

But I will buy the retail version, The New Order was amazing, I had a lot of fun with it, very good job Machine Games. I will enjoy this for sure, a castle, zombies, crazy weapons, I m in !!!

  • Can someone explain how $20 usd converts to $55 nzd. I mean we always get hit hard but thats double the usd equivalent. Please stop overcharging us and show some appreciation for your customers all around the world and not just the US.

  • Grim_streaker999

Ok I have to re evaluate my first comments for this game. Im now halfway through the game, and its really starting to get fun.
I will surely recommend this title to everyone who loves xtremly gory and fast paced fps, sure you can go stealth here aswell, but its much more difficult than in new order.

No boom headshot here, its more like boom headsplatt
