Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty launches on PS3 this week

Pick up Lorne Lanning’s re-imagined platforming classic this Wednesday

Hello! 20 years ago – way back in 1994 – we at Oddworld Inhabitants started working on our first video game, which originally had the name of “SoulStorm”. It was later retitled to the name Oddworld fans now know it as best: Abe’s Oddysee.

A story-based atmospheric cinematic platformer, Oddysee would go on to define the Oddworld brand – humour, epic art, great playability and a plot that resonated far deeper than it appeared on the surface.

Thankfully, our unassuming, hapless hero Abe captured the hearts of PlayStation gamers when it was released in 1997 – and last year, the ground-up remake Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty managed the same feat on PlayStation 4, a game that really connected with critics and gamers alike.

New ‘n’ Tasty is an ambitious project for us. While it’s based on Oddysee, New ‘n’ Tasty doesn’t use a single line of the original source code; there are no visual elements recycled; almost all of the audio was redone from scratch and even the cut-scenes were completely re-built.

And, of course everything is now in full 3D, with dynamic lighting, responsive AI and ragdoll physics for added hilarity.

That all means that every version of the game needs love, care and dedication to make it look, feel and play the best for that platform. We’ve taken everything on board regarding the PlayStation 4 version over the months since release (including the addition of classic ‘old school’ controls) and are now ready to announce that the PlayStation 3 version will be out very soon.

How soon? Well, just watch the trailer…

New ‘n’ Tasty is a game forged very much by our fans. Our fans helped name the game, voice acted as Mudokons in the game, and helped name the PlayStation trophies. They even decided which game we should actually make in the first place – so this latest Oddworld title is very much our way of saying thanks for the years of dedicated support.

We’re really excited about the PlayStation 3 version. The developers at Just Add Water in the UK have worked tirelessly over the last few months, and all the hard work and dedication has resulted in a faithful version of the game, standing up nicely against its PS4 sibling.

New ‘n’ Tasty will be yours to download from the PlayStation Store very soon indeed for €19.99/£14.99 – and remember it’s Cross-Buy with other PlayStation formats of the game.

We hope you enjoy Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty on PlayStation 3.

Stay Odd!

  • Is the PSVita version still in development and will it come out by Xmas? I’m just curious on how will the PSVita handles the Unity engine after seeing Counterspy on Vita had long load times and stuttering frame rate.

  • Great. So when’s the Vita release, this year?

  • Amazing. So much pride in this post but you are modest Lorne. You could have taken credit for voicing Abe all by yourself again too. I believe you did the Sligs voices again too? :D
Patiently awaiting a remake of the sequel now too, after the Vita version of this obviously :)

  • About time guys ;) any news regarding the DLC for the old versions? I think you guys mentioned they would’ve been cross-buy, too. However i still don’t understand why, while you said that PS+ who got the game during launch would keep the DLC “forever”, those still have an expiration date like the rest of our PS+ content…

  • Bought the PS4 version at release. I still would buy a physical version (PS4), please make it happen. I want to play the game till death us do part.

    • The game is technically “indie”, so the chances are very slim. The closest you can get is the GOG version (or the Steam one, if you want to hurt yourself) burnt on a DVD :P

  • So glad this is coming to PS3, only had the demo on the PS1 and never bought the original. Will definitely be making up for it and getting this though. This is how you do a remaster, unlike 99% of all the other remastered cash grabs being released on next gen that are nothing but a spit and polish if you’re lucky.

    • The original is on PSN and it works on PS VITA, PSP & PS3 :) I have them all this is why i got the PS4 version and hoped they would have updated up on the PS VITA release… :(

  • What happened to the PS VITA version? When is it due?

    • I guess it’s still coming… they’re releasing all versions one by one, if you haven’t already noticed it… the series is famous, the game is great, but the development team is small.

  • Thoroughly enjoyed this on PS4 last month, finally completed Abe’s first adventure after never completing the PS1 version.

  • Played the ps4 one, just hoping to play the vita version, I could technically play it through remote play but would much rather play the copy made for the console i bought, that and i often get interference

  • Iv played the first one of Oddworld back inthe 80’s and then the ‘n’tasy one on the ps4 which a lot better then the one in the 80’s??? In the new one you can see what your doing when befor you could’t.

  • This is just a heads up for anybody who is thinking about getting or playing the PS3 version of this game. I’ve just got it today and have discovered a really bad sound bug in the game. There are parts of the game where you lose all sound and it doesn’t return until it loads in a new section. Dying or quitting and reloading does not restore it in the affected parts. Unfortunately it’s not just one bit it has happened to me numerous times that I have now stopped playing it.

You don’t need to do anything special, I was just playing through the game normally, never even used quick save once. It started happening not even 20 minutes into the game. I tried a new save and started over and it happened not even 10 minutes in.

I have emailed the developers about it so hopefully they will look into and release a patch.
