Grip Games’ expanded edition brings with it a new story and game mode

Hi everybody. It’s Jakub from Grip Games. A few months ago, our friends at Toxic Games announced that their brain-twisting first-person puzzler Q.U.B.E. is heading to the PS3 and PS4. Since then, we have taken over development and publishing duties from them, so that Toxic Games can focus on their future projects while we will bring you the best version of Q.U.B.E yet – the Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut.

Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut is a first-person puzzle game. You wake up inside a mysterious white cube and you will have to solve dozens of physics-based puzzles and platforming challenges, using a pair of hi-tech gloves that can manipulate some parts of the environment to get out.

What’s new and really cool about the Director’s Cut version is the story. It’s like the story itself is a puzzle you have to figure out inside your own head. It’s hard to explain – I don’t want to spoil it! The new story was created by veteran writer Rob Yescombe. He’s written for games like The Division, Alien: Isolation, Rime and the Crysis franchise.

The second major addition is a time-trial game mode, called Against the Qlock, where the game pits you against the clock. Combining precision, logic and quick reactions you’ll have to speed through each of the ten levels using a variety of pick-ups to your advantage.

Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut is coming to both the PS3 and PS4 and will be released this summer. The game is on Unreal Engine, so expect it to look sleek and gorgeous, and the PS4 version will run at 1080p and 60fps. And like with all our games, we’re supporting Cross-Buy. Follow us on Twitter for all the latest Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut news, or check out the official website.

  • Hey Jakub, I’ve been hankering for something akin to Portal and this looks great. Is there any online coop?

  • Why not on Vita?

And don’t say use Remote Play, that’s not the same.

    • Just hypothesizing:

      1. It’s easier to run into bottlenecks in terms of available CPU/GPU/memory resources on PS Vita which can make it a bit challenging to port to game over, since some of the assets might have to be adapted.

      2. The PS Vita is an amazing system with great games (imo), but from an economical business point of view, it isn’t that attractive for developers and publishers because of the low installed base. PS4/PS3 development take priority because of this.

Buy yes, a PS Vita version would be nice indeed :) and might be possible, but probably not a priority for the developer.

    • I’m well aware of the challenges, but Unreal Engine supports Vita. Having the compatibility there makes it slightly easier. If anything, all that needs to be adapted is optimisations and level of detail.

Can’t hurt to have another user-base. We Vita owners always welcome games that aren’t pixelly and stuck in the past.

As a developer myself, I’d jump at the chance to develop for Vita, because it deserves attention. It may be looked over by the greedy money-hoarding studios such as Naughty Dog and EA, but Indies give it the love it needs, they’re what’s keeping it going.

It might not be much, but the demand is there.

I’d rather have a well-optimised, sharp looking version made for the device, rather than streaming something scaled down, chances of lagging and control latency.

    • If you look at the majority of the other comments, the demand for a Vita version is there.

  • And the version of psvita?

  • Looks good, could you be drawn to comment the price? Both the price you think its worth (dollars) and the price you’ll be charging us. Seems indie devs are as bad as the big publishers these days with their 1:1 conversions and I’d like to see more of you buck this worrying trend or we’re headed for another industry crash and its Tue indie movement that will suffer most if that happens.

    • The price has not been settled yet, but it will be probably 9.99. I agree that saying USD = EUR is wrong, but on the other hand, look at the currency rate between USD and EUR and you’ll see that they are almost 1:1 and with Europe having more expensive age ratings and such, don’t blame the developers for doing 1:1. UK pound should be of course a little lower.

    • First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer, most indie developers flat put refuse to comment on pricing and the ones that do often get it wrong.

I was referring to 1:1 from US to GBP, something which should never ever happen but is getting very close. We’re also seeing Euro prices coming in above the dollar, which is backwards too. See Helldiver’s obscene pricing where even with a 20% PS+ discount the US release for non-PS+ members was still cheaper.

Also, age ratings seems a very bizarre reason. Are you really saying that the difference in one off fees between PEGI and ESRB are such price conversions have to be boosted by as much as 40% in some cases on every single purchase to cover that cost?

Again thank you for posting and being willing to enter into a frank discussion about pricing, we get grossly overcharged here in the UK for PSN content and although we know that SCEE has a hand in setting the prices they refuse to engage with us on the matter, so thank you.

  • I’d love to play this on my PSVita. #buildingthelist

  • Looks good and it sounds up my alley.

I think first-person puzzling good games could also be a good fit for VR. Any possibility of Project Morpheus support in 2016? Thanks in advance. :)

  • Please try to get a platinum trophy! Q is my one obstical in platinuming the alphabet because the two games starting with q that have plats have too many multiplayer trophies and nobody places them because they’re rubbish!

  • I’ve been on the fence about this one for a while. It may be the time to jump off said fence when this comes out. That said, I’d REALLY like to see this on Vita…

  • So it will have a story like PORTAL? How long it will be? How many levels.?
    Trophies, platinum please?
