Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare: Survival tips & PlayStation-exclusive hats

Get ready for some horticultural FPS action on PS4 next month

Hi everyone, Chris Fox here, lead gameplay designer on Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare. We’re extremely excited to be releasing Garden Warfare on PS4 and PS3 this 21st August. To celebrate, I’d like to give a quick introduction to our split-screen survival mode, as well as some tips for beginners and veterans alike.

In our split-screen mode, it’s you and a friend teaming up to protect your garden from an endless zombie horde. With just two plants versus all of Dr. Zomboss’ minions, character selection is key. While all characters can be successful, choosing complementary classes can help to turn the tide in your favour.

The Pea Shooter and Sunflower are natural companions. He’s a mid-range specialist, and she’s a healer. Pretty obvious stuff, I know. But what you might not know is that the Chomper and Cactus make quite the formidable pair. The Chomper’s ability to bite right through armour allows him to take care of pesky Coffin and Outhouse zombies, leaving the Cactus free to snipe ranged zombies from a safe distance.

In Garden Warfare, each playable class has up to seven unlockable Variants, complete with different weapons and characteristics. Some of these are better suited to our cooperative game modes than others. A great example of this is the Power Cactus. Her electric shots can arc across multiple enemies at once, inflicting damage to entire groups of zombies. This is especially helpful for clearing out low HP groups from around your garden.

Much like in the original Plants vs. Zombies, what you plant, and where you chose to plant it, can be the difference between victory and defeat. A good strategy is to plant your powerful, melee-based plants close to your garden. That way, you can protect them with your more common, ranged plants along your front line.

Experimenting with different plant combinations can lead to interesting and powerful results. One of my favourite tactics is to let an Ice Shroom freeze a zombie solid, then have a Snap Dragon finish it off with his flame breath.

Garden selection is something that can be overlooked by newcomers. Each level features three different gardens locations you can choose to protect. Depending on your play style, some will be easier to defend than others. Try them all out, and then go for the one that suits you the best.

My final bit of advice is that there’s no shame in running away. If you’re finding yourselves overwhelmed by the horde, backing off and making a quick lap around the map can provide a critical chance to regroup and heal. Just make sure to keep an eye on your garden’s health. For those of you who want to see our strategies in action, I’ll be live streaming on PS4 via the PopCap Twitch channel, alongside fellow designer Jeff Shaw, on Thursday 31st July at 6.00pm BST.

As I mentioned off the top, we’re thrilled to be bringing Garden Warfare to PS4 and PS3. The team wanted to do something special for all of the PlayStation fans, so we’ve created a batch of exclusive hats based on some of our favourite PlayStation characters. These will be available exclusively to those who pre-order through PlayStation Store or retailers, however the Fat Princess hat is a digital exclusive! Thanks for your time. If you have any questions, or want to say hi, you can find me on Twitter.

Otherwise, I hope to see you all online in a few weeks!

  • MAKE A BETTER WORLD AND BRING THIS ONE TO OUR VITAS!

  • “Get ready for some horticultural FPS action on PS4 next month”

Can someone please explain to me how this can be considered a “First Person Shooter” when it’s not in first person? Aside from that, the game looks good, and it’s gotten pretty good reviews. Sadly, I’m just not into muiltiplayer-only games.

  • This isn’t an FPS. The game is third person

  • Any news on the price of the digital copy? And when will we be able to preorder the game through the PS store? :)

  • Very disappointed the Fat Princess hat is digital only.

  • Is it possible to play split-screen on PS4 and PS Vita?

  • When is Peggle 2 coming to PS4? I hate Timed Exclusives its disgusting, How does the Micro-transactions work in this latest version of Plants vs Zombies?

“The team wanted to do something special for all of the PlayStation fans” – Correction: PS4/PS3 owners. How about that Vita? Just saying.

    • madmanwithabox12

And no, Remote Play isn’t an excuse. That’s not playing a game on Vita. That’s not making a game for Vita. That’s an excuse to not make games for Vita. As ever, Vita gets left in the lurch with another game that has no reason to exclude the platform. You can’t honestly tell me this game would be too taxing for that hardware at all, especially if it’s slightly downgraded from the PS3 version. But whatever, Vita never gets the games it should.

    • m8 give it a rest not everything has to be on vita and fyi the majority of ps fans are ps3 owners and now ps4 .

not being funny but some of vita owners are just coming across down right selfish again not everything has to be about vita and heres another thing ,
I remember a ps vita blog were the ps staff wer saying a certain games releasing soon on that blog anyways a ps4 owner was asking is it possible for the game to be released for ps4 and guess wot the vita owners wer warning the guy not to ask such thing on their precious vita blog, tad bit selfish much? and yet nearly every single ps3 /ps4 blog has vita owners asking for vita version or vita love .

    • Because Vita doesn’t get games. If it did, people wouldn’t complain. Simple.

How about instead of trying to tell me how to comment, you think about what you’re trying to say. Developers need to see the demand is there on Vita if they are to ever consider putting their games on the system. If everyone stayed quiet we’d have never got Freedom Wars as a physical release. We’d never be getting Tales of Hearts R or both Hatsune Miku games either. So how about you don’t try and generalise Vita owners as selfish and actually think about the implications of what people like myself are doing? PS3 has a tonne of great games already. PS4 is going to get that support, but it’s only just finding it’s legs because it hasn’t been out long. Vita has been out 2 years and the future looks pretty bleak and I’m pro-Vita as you can get. The reason people aren’t asking for X game on PS3/4 is because 99 times out of a hundred the game announcements are for those systems, whilst Vita is just getting indie games and not much of anything else.

    • Technically, Vita does get games…..

    • I have more games than I know what to do with on my Vita. I literally have more games than time to play them.

    • Yes, Vita does get games. But they’re all smaller indie games, which is nice, but when that’s pretty much all it’s getting… it deserves WAY more than that. Games like this or Lara Croft or Tekken Revolution or Ducktales Remastered or Sonic CD or Castle of Illusion or Valiant Hearts… they’re all digital games that have decided to omit Vita for whatever reason and it certainly isn’t profitability. Digital games sell really well on the platform and I expect name brands like those would do even better.

    • *it deserves WAY more than that* that’s just your opinion doesn’t mean it does deserve it

*they’re all digital games that have decided to omit Vita for whatever reason * your starting to sound like there is some dark conspiracy theory as to why their not developing games for the vita.

      * and it certainly isn’t profitability. * you are so wrong can you get any more wrong than that ? everything in the gaming industry is done for profit except a hand full of indie titles that is usually done by truly passionate people .

    • You’re not listening to me. Either that, or you’re unable to comprehend what I’m saying. Digital games sell extremely well on Vita, it has an extraordinary attach rate (higher than any other system on the market). Some games sell better on Vita than other systems like PS3 or 3DS, despite those having larger install bases. Retro City Rampage springs to mind, Brian Provincianno said it sold WAY better on Vita than on PS3 OR PC. So no, it’s not an issue with profitability. There are 10 million Vitas sold worldwide. Whilst that’s not as high as some systems, the investment with some of these digital games is very minimal (especially games that are being ported) whilst the income is potentially very rewarding.

    • are you seriously gonna use retro city as an example ? hmm that game didn’t even cost no were as much as a triple a title will cost , seriously tho that type of game will obviously sell more on a hand held its like say tetris there is no way will that many people buy a game like that on pc / ps4 / ps3 , that seriously doesn’t make the vita market profitable .

hell a indie pc game sometimes costs way over 2 mil and these games usually has developers already invested a lot of money in them I know because I’ve invested in a lot of public funded pc games, ok lets agree for a sec that the vita sells a lot more than say the ps3 that has over 80 mill users and the pc which has quite a fan base too ,explain to me something logical will you why on earth are developers not interested in it ? let me guess they hate money ?

you actually think porting a game is as simple as you say it is ? you obviously dnt know much do ,you are a desperate vita owner that will by any quality game crap or gd , by reading your post I can tell it wont matter but don’t assume everyone will do the same no way will a broken rushed out port sell , again your reasoning is not logical

( showing one or two games that sold well doesn’t make porting to the vita instantly rewarding otherwise you would of seen more of it.)

  • PVS GW to the Vita would be nice. Would love a Clicker (Last of US) skin for this game.

  • One question though, the game isn’t available on the Swedish psn store yet and barerly any retailer has it up so how am I going to get the pre-order bonus?

  • I’d buy a Vita version. Don’t own a PS4 and have a policy of not buying any cross-gen games on PS3. Hence I guess I won’t be picking it up.

Seriously though, they way Sony is mistreating Vita is a disgrace that makes me want to get an Xbox One over PS4.

    • if sony was to give you every game in the world on vita I can guarantee you still will be complaining .
and yes I am a vita owner aswell , lol you actually think Microsoft will treat you any better ?

so you have a ps3 but you wont buy it because you dnt buy cross gen ? even tho that’s exactly wot it would be if they released it on vita .

    • why are there so many Vita owners that think every game ever should come out on Vita? I have like 60+ games on my Vita and all par 2-3 are really good. Stop whining.

  • So:
    1. Multiplayer only game.
    2. 6 months later on Playstation.
    3. The same price as XB version on start.

Yeah, good luck with that. Online will be dead in 2 months.

    • The online numbers on XB have dropped massively since launch. Between the poor balancing and tdo unbelievable grind people just gave up.

February was the best time to release this game when the launch shooters were winding down and there were few other games. Slotting this into the same month as TLOU, Metro Redux and Diablo 3 is a death sentence.

And don’t get me started on the idea of full priced retail releases with pay to win setup.

  • Peggle 2! Please please please!

  • @madmanwithabox12 lol really, I already know what im saying but I dnt think you know what you are saying ,

you actually think 50 to 60 people complaining on a ps4 blog is gonna make the developers spend millions of pounds / dollars making a vita title ? seriously that’s just silliy put it like this if the vita was popular as u trying to make it out to be, trust me when I say you would not of have to beg the devs they would have been all over the vita like ants .

another thing freedom wars is already a vita game so that little examples kind of moot, wer as this game they would have to do the whole thing .

see if the vita was popular you or any one else for that matter wouldn’t of had to keep asking , games like this or hell even dragon age inquisition would of been on the vita list if it was profitable or even if develepoers thought theres a slight chance of profit , honestly now days devs are more interested in iphones / android market guess why ? yh you guessed it because its got a lot of profit in it for them .

( go out and buy more vitas get others to buy it send messages on face book / tweet / youtube about the games that already exist small or big dnt matter that’s how devs will get interested in making games for the system . ps if you’ve already done those obviously you or any one else for that matter hasn’t tried hard enough otherwise we wouldn’t be here having this convo

    • * developers

    • neither PvZGW or Dragon Age are really ever what I expect to see on the Vita. Ever. Not because it isn’t popular, but because why? PvZGW is an online multiplayer game, even being able to play offline with bots for on the go playing wouldn’t make it worth it.

I’d sooner expect Timesplitters on Vita than PvZGW

    • @axe_ninja dragon age was just a example nothing more

this isn’t about what games you would like , this is more about why will developers be interested in investing money and time on the vita , nor is this about bringing games from japan that are already on vita this is more so about developers making triple A titles from scratch be that game be multi plat or exclusive .

    • @ axe_ninja I agree about PvZGW I wouldn’t want that on my vita either

    • Are you serious? Really? “If you want more games on Vita, buy more Vitas!” You are so wrong it’s not even funny.

This isn’t a PS4 blog actually. It’s the PlayStation blog – i.e. PS3, Vita and PS4. Vita owners should be allowed their say just as much as anyone else, without people like you trying to shout them down all the time.

    • @madmanwithabox12 Erm no its not meant to be funny its the truth which obviously you don’t like ,
more vita sales and interest’s = more developers having interest in developing games for the system

if vita had just came out yesterday then yh sales wouldn’t matter as the system would be a future of possibility’s , but after a year or two? deffo sales is everything

    • @madmanwithabox12 shouting really ? more like explaining

if you was able to take away that blind fold of yours from your eyes you would understand what I’m saying.
(making a game isn’t as easy as clicking a finger)

    • I don’t think you even get what I’m saying… like, at all.

You honestly think the solution to this problem is for people who already own a Vita to buy multiple Vitas? That’s beyond stupid. Even if that were to happen (which would be the dumbest thing) it would mean sweet FA for the future of the device, since those people aren’t going to buy multiple copies of games to accommodate their multiple Vitas. But hey with all the non-logic you’re throwing out, you must be a certified genius, right?

For Vita to improve it’s the people who are so-called PlayStation fans that haven’t picked one up that need to pick one up. 80 million PS3s in the wild, why have only 10 million Vitas been sold? That’s the problem here, not the PlayStation faithful like myself who HAVE invested in the system.

  • I to really want peggle 2, it’s been ages now!

  • That’s a good idea :) :)

  • madmanwithabox12 seriously are you like reading anything ? or just hearing things in your head? i’ll quote what I wrote before since you seem to have problems reading

Quote ;( GO OUT AND BUY MORE VITAS get others to buy it send messages on face book / tweet / youtube about the games that already exist small or big dnt matter that’s how devs will get interested in making games for the system . – – ps if you’ve already done those obviously you or any one else for that matter hasn’t tried hard enough otherwise we wouldn’t be here having this convo

now let me break it down for you the part in caps that you seem so fixated on was just a example , and obviously you didn’t read the rest because you just repeated what I said in your recent post obviously in a different way

Quote from your post ; For Vita to improve it’s the people who are so-called PlayStation fans that haven’t picked one up that need to pick one up. 80 million PS3s in the wild, why have only 10 million Vitas been sold? ^^^ lol you see same thing different words.

    • You told me that I’m at fault for only having one Vita (hell, I even bought two because the first one broke). If you can’t see what’s wrong about that then I’m not going to help you.

    • congrats you made yourself look like a idiot and madmanwithabox12 ignore him he lost his brain down the toilet

  • fyi the time you are spending here arguing nonsense , you could be promoting the vita to the social media stuff I mentioned

another m8 there is no way on earth will you get new games by talking crap , yes you will get games that our already on the vita that our out in japan but now way on hell or earth will you get a game made from scratch by moaning.

    • Promoting it through social media? What are you talking about? I don’t work for Sony. It shouldn’t be the job of the consumers to market the platform. That’s just one of the many flaws in your reasoning.

Would it also kill you to type properly?

    • Lol what did you just tell me to type properly says the guy who doesn’t even break up his sentences lol

quote from your post >>> Because Vita doesn’t get games. If it did, people wouldn’t complain. Simple.

lol lol since we are at correcting hows about breaking it up a little ^^^

my man talking to you is like talking to a brick wall but at least the wall does absorb things eventually .

( imo next time try fixing your own post’s before complaining about some ones else’s typo )

    • Just a heads up you do realise you don’t have to work for sony? to speaad the word for system you apparently love , what did you call yourself before ? aww playstation faithful aka fan .

then yes it is down to the fans as well , a lot of franchises get saved why ? yes fans .
I actually would of have a lot more respect for you , if you went and done online petitions. for games you want

  • This game is awesome because use your tablet to play or you can use a ps vita.

  • Will the boss mode app be on iPad as we’ll as tablets
