MouseCraft launches tomorrow on PS4, PS3 and PS Vita

Plus, win a copy of the puzzle adventure, and a PS Vita to play it on

We’re very happy to announce that MouseCraft is available tomorrow on the PSN store, alongside a 10% discount for PS Plus users. We’re really proud to see our game launched on PlayStation as a console exclusive, and we hope that everyone enjoys playing. You can check out the trailer for the game, which we had a ton of fun making, above.

It seems like a long time ago we formed our studio, Crunching Koalas, and began working on MouseCraft! Way back when we started we decided to focus on a specific type of game that we called ‘Crossover Games’ – games that can appeal to indie, casual and core gamers all at once. That’s a simple idea on paper but much harder to achieve in a game! We’ve tried our best to make MouseCraft a crossover game that can be enjoyed by everyone.

To do this, we’ve focused on making a puzzle game with simple mechanics explainable in one sentence (drop blocks to help the mice get to the cheese), but difficult to master. We’ve made the difficulty depend on the player making good decisions, not manual skills, and we worked to reward players that go ‘above and beyond’ in terms of item collecting and puzzle solving, without punishing those who simply want to play through at their own pace.

Once again though, all of that stuff is easy to talk about, but making an entire game is an entirely different matter. Somewhere early in development, we decided that our favourite puzzle games were nearly all retro games, and in trying to work out what make those games so popular, we hit upon the idea of combining elements from two of the most popular puzzle games to create something completely new, and MouseCraft was born.

An important part of a ‘crossover game’ for us is making an art style that’s fun and simple but detailed enough to appeal to everyone. As you can see, we went through a lot of different test designs and prototypes before we settled on the one in the final game:

Even when we settled on the final design, we were still constantly tweaking the games mechanic and style to improve immersion. We added things like replacing brick buttons with brick models that hang along a rail and letting players move between levels without a transition or loading screen. These are small changes, but we think they make a massive difference to how the game feels.

It’s a cliché, but we hope people enjoy playing MouseCraft as much we enjoyed making it, and if you have any questions about the game, please leave them in the comments!

  • “Please note that the competition is open to persons aged 14 years or over” – Curve’s T&C say 16+.

Looks really interesting! That level select screen reminds me of a (board) game I used to play when I was younger – can’t remember the name though :(.

Here are some questions I have:
    * Is the competition open to all residents in Europe, only UK, only mainland Europe, …?
    * Is MouseCraft cross-buy (and if so, cross-save)?
    * Any details on price, aside from the 10% discount for PS+ users?
    * Can levels you’ve created be shared with others?
    * Is the level editor also included in the Vita version?

Thanks in advance for answering my questions, and I look forward to playing it tomorrow!

    • (looks like Curve’s T&C was updated – it now also says 14+)

    • Our bad! I updated the age thing! It’s open to all European countries. MouseCraft is Cross-Buy and Cross-Save, the level editor can’t share levels online but it’s available on all 3 platforms including the Vita!

As for the price, we’re not announcing that until tomorrow – just because sometimes we’ve announced the price as it’s been slightly different to the store price, and we don’t want people to feel like we’ve changed or lied about it!

    • If levels created in the editor cannot be shared online, I’m afraid I don’t understand the point of the editor. Is there some other way to share levels? Surely players aren’t limited to playing custom levels that they themselves have created, and are therefore almost certain to know how to solve, are they?

      What am I missing?

  • been waiting on this one. :)

  • This game actually looks pretty cool. I’ll make sure to pick it up tomorrow.

  • What are the controls on the Vita? Seeing the pointer, i can’t help but remember another rodent game with blocks controlled by the dreaded rear touch pad and shudder in horror. Can we control the blocks without touch controls?

    • We try to make sure people have multiple ways to control using the Vita, and MouseCraft is no exception :) You can play using only touch, only regular controls, or a mix of both!

  • I see that Schrodinger cat is crunching to provide us massive discounts for tomorrow’s launch :)

  • I am all over a PS4 version :D Just 1 quick question, is the trophy set shared or separate? i prefer separate myself. Thank you for finally giving us MousCraft :D

  • I think the one of the concept art styles would of been better.

  • No Demo = N Sale

  • why is not available on UK store and US is?

  • The US price is $14.99 so our price should be £8.75

  • I love puzzle games, and have been looking forwards to this since a friend bought the PC early access a while a go. Definitely buy this when I get home from work tonight…unless PSN is down again, which seems to be a common trait with the PS4 since launch.
