Expert tips on mastering dungeons, raids and Primal fights

Welcome to our new weekly feature! You have seen our articles pop up in the last few weeks, and there was so much positive feedback from you guys that we decided to deliver these articles on a weekly basis from now on, giving you a solid intro into the world of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn until the game is released for the PS4 on April 14th, 2014! Every week we’ll introduce a different part of the game to you – this week, we’ll talk about Dungeons, Raids and Deities.
For the most part, players can explore the world of Final Fantasy XIV at their own leisure. But what would a MMO be without some group content? In this article, we will introduce you to the numerous activities that can only be mastered in groups of four to 24.

The Realm of Eorzea with its three city-states is far-reaching and has many hidden corners and crevices, in which the wicked and dark can find an all too welcome foothold. Be it the manor of a Lady, so struck with vanity that she exchanged sanity for it, or an abandoned mine overrun with beastmen – adventurers are in constant demand, and there’s always something to do.
Throughout the game, adventurers will also come across the so-called “Primals”. How these god-like beings are called into the realm is an important part of the storyline, so we won’t give too much away.
The best known example of the sheer destructiveness of the Primals was the coming of the Seventh Umbral Era, brought forth by the elder primal Bahamut, who was freed from his prison in the lesser moon Dalamud. A single, massive battle with Bahamut reshaped the face of Eorzea forever. What happened with Bahamut after the battle, nobody knows…
Check out the epic, catastrophic battle with Bahamut in this video:

Dungeons
Adventurers don’t just become famous by fulfilling the quests of the general populace. Have you ever heard of dungeons? Enemy-infested abodes and holes in the ground. What does that mean for you? Simple – grab three of your friends and cleanse them, for fame and fortune!
Dungeons are instanced. That means, only you and your group, with a total size ranging from four to eight, will be able to enter. They are generally harder than what you’d find in the outside world, but they also give unique rewards like equipment that you can’t find anywhere else, and massive amounts of experience points.
So what if you’ve missed one? Or out-levelled a dungeon? No problem – each Dungeon has a “maximum level”. Should you exceed it, you will be levelled down to the appropriate level.
And you do not have to run to the dungeon every time you want to enter it – after you have unlocked the Dungeon, you will find it in the Duty Finder, where you can queue up with random players for the Dungeon – although you may find it preferable to build your own group.
And what about the endgame? Well, about a quarter of the dungeons are Level 50 based, and some of them are available in hard mode – but we wouldn’t want to spoil the fun now, would we?

Raids
What would endgame be without Raids? Right now, there are two in the game – the Labyrinth of the Ancients within the Crystal Tower, a 24-man raid for three distinctive groups of eight, and The Binding Coil of Bahamut, an eight-man raid for the most dedicated of groups – but also delivering the best equipment currently available…
The Binding Coil of Bahamut is for those of you that are experienced in group play and want a real challenge, as only few groups have managed to push beyond the final boss at this point.
With future major content updates, which are currently planned to be released every three months, we will constantly expand the endgame landscape.
Primals
Throughout your travels, you will come across the Primals. God-like beings, called to the world by the beast tribes through means initially unknown. These challenging fights never fail to impress, and many adventurers have found their calling in sending these infernal beasts back to where they came from.
But it doesn’t end there. Not only are there Hard Modes for the Primals, but also the elusive and extremely difficult to master Extreme modes. Do you think you’ve got what it takes?
All of these contents are available to you conveniently through a tool called the Duty Finder, so you can re-experience them at any time, help friends to master them and find companions to battle your way to the top.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn arrives on PS4 on 14th April. Enjoy your time in Eorzea!

    Oops? :)

  • Hi Kahuna, great idea to make it a weekly feature.
I’m not if you saw my question in the last article, but I was just wondering whether the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game will share the same Trophy list?
    Thanks!

      Hey Vashetti,
While we can confirm that they will get carried over, I do not know much more about that functionality at this point. Sorry!

  • Hey ..
    really enjoying the beta sofar.
    Few comments/questions:
    1) I do find it difficult to target people to heal during duty’s. Is there an easy way for this with the controller? Maybe a way to scroll through the partylist alone instead of random targetting between everything in the field.
And how do i target someone to heal when i attacked a mob. Is it possible to switch between damage/healing mode cause once i target a mob and damage it .. i cant seem to be able to target someone to heal anymore until the fight has ended.
    2) About dungeons .. i seen 2 sofar .. but im never able to enter them .. it says i need to have finished a quest. For example the Tam-Tara Deepcroft keeps saying i need to finish “Fire in the Gloom” but i never seen this quest.
    3) On psn store are just the ps3 versions atm. ps4 isnt able to preorder either. How does this work if i want the digital version but still want the preorder items/collectors stuff too.
    Thanks !

      Hi Basket,
      Glad you enjoyed it :)
      1) When you press the D-Pad up or down, you can select party members :) it should cycle through the list. When you press it left or right, you select enemies. That should work.
      2) FFXIV is very story driven. You find the quests to the dungeons as part of your storyline. Just follow your main storyline and make sure not to skip on quests, and you should be fine :)
      3) You will have to go for the packaged version for now. Sorry!

  • @Basket21
    1) Press up and down, if its the same as the PS3 controls.
Up and down are reserved to your party list where left and right is for enemies.
    2) Most dungeons are unlocked by story quests. First being around Level 15-16. only a few later are dungeons that are unlocked by optional quests
    3) preorders are probably gonna happen in the future, else preorder a physical release, this game only requires the disc on the first boot, after game is installed its a 100% digital game. Or the PS3 it atleast, and I’m quite sure the PS4 vers. will be the same.
Else get the PS3 vers. Collectors or not.
When the PS4 launchers it will be a free upgrade to PS4, but you will lose the option to log in by PS3.
    To sum it up.
    Buy PS3 vers. now
-Get Collectors stuff and get the game now.
    -Upgrade to PS4 later
    Wait and get PS4 vers.
    – Collectors & Preorder bonuses
If you own the PC/PS3 Collectors Edition you get the PS4 Collectors stuff when the PS4 vers. launchers.
Here is the PS4 vers. Product page : http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/pr/ps4/
    Hope that helps you^^

  • Another good tip for dungeons – head to the Social menu and use the feature called Party Finder. This helps you to find people similar to yourself. For example, some people (like myself) enjoy the cutscenes and want to enjoy dungeons for the story experience. Other players want to skip cutscenes and rush through a dungeon multiple times to earn better equipment. The Party Finder will help you find like-minded people for a sense of “party unity” :)

  • @Basket21
In addition to using up/down you can also set up target filters. See explanation here … http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=101746955&postcount=349
Question … the article mentions new content every 3 months. Are there plans for paid for additions to the game? Or is everything covered by the sub? The answer could mitigate my reluctance to sign up for a sub.
Also it would be nice if the digital PS4 version was sensibly priced. Given the PS3 version can be had for £10 on the High street (Game) and with that you can upgrade straight to the PS4 version, then why not make it easier for people?

  • @DrDamn i think all additions are through the sub.
Thats how it worked with WoW usually, except big new world were introduced through expansion sets u buy at Retail.
In the world everything gets added through patches (dungeons/quests/etc).

  • I really need to play this more i have barely scratched the surface it seems! Only on level 8 and not ventured too far from the safety of the city :-)

  • My god that was a good video. Gave me the chills

  • Hi could you please ask somebody to answer the growing concerns posted in the ps+ post march. We are all feeling unloved

    • Hergen 'Kahuna' Thaens

I will try to have another go through them tomorrow. Apologies for the lack of replies, the Beta week was a bit crazy for all of us.

  • @GEO-35 can you stop spamming all of the news posts with the same comment. No one is going to say anything about it, they’ve cut a PS3 game because they want you to forget about PS3 now and move on to PS4. Sony owe you nothing (check their ToS) and no blog staff are going to risk commenting due to the 100s of whiny entitled gamers posting on every store update post.

  • @GEO-35
I appreciate you aren’t happy with the changes, but take a look at the ToS (http://legaldoc.dl.playstation.net/ps3-eula/psn/e/e_tosua_en.html)
    “PlayStation Plus Subscriptions
When you purchase a subscription to PlayStation Plus, the package of services in the subscription varies throughout your subscription period …”

  • I love that trailer so much :O
If there were no monthly fees, i would be in already. But considering the fact that I am (happily) “cured” from WoW for almost 3 years already, the only subscription i want to have is PS+.
Well, I’ll at least give a try to those infamous FF13 and see if I like it or not :) (And of course can’t wait for FF15 :D)

  • Loving the beta, but there is one problem I hope to see corrected; the text size. I’m a storyline guy, but the text is so small that it is impossible to read unless you’re sat right up against your TV. I can understand how that would be fine for PC, bit on consoles it’s so hard to read that I find myself skipping cutscenes that I would otherwise love to watch and not even reading the missions. However, overall I love the game so far.

  • I was so shocked by how much more amazing the PS4 version of the game looks, i was going to re sub to the ps3 version to tide me over but i’m just going to wait a little longer to fully take on everything on the ps4!

  • @Basket: Like others said, pressing up/down will select party members. Pressing left / right will select targets ( including mobs / npcs / party members, instead of only mobs ), you can set which targets by filters though.
The issue you had with not being able to target party members after attacking a mob is caused by different filters for weapon sheated / unsheated ( when you attack a mob you ll draw your weapon ). You can solve this by setting the filters or by putting away your weapon / using up-down on the d-pad.

  • Hey great kahuna maybe you can help me. I signed in with my ps3 service account on the phase one of the ps4 beta. Now I cannot play on the ps3. Does that mean It is now a ps4 service account? Help please
