‘Heads-Up’ PlayStation Plus Update – 6th June 2012

PlayStation Plus has changed!

By now, you’ve probably seen what’s going on with the US PlayStation Plus update in June and the ‘Instant Game Collection’ and I’m certain you’re all excited to see what we’ve got in Store for you too.

Well I’ve got a lot to go through with you so brace yourself and please keep your arms and legs inside the blog post at all times.

So let’s cover all that shall we?

First of all, you’re still going to get MASSES of discounts on all kinds of stuff in Store, both Plus exclusive and extra discounts on Special offers.

You’re still going to get exclusive dynamic themes, avatars and access to beta trials – in fact we’ve got some truly fantastic betas coming before the end of the year for you.

Then, there are the games. From now on, the watchwords are more and better. More new games, more digital Blu-ray, more of the very best the PlayStation®Store can provide.

You’re getting 10 games up front and from next month, 3 of those games will change, and you’ll get at least 3 games per month thereafter.

The important thing is that whenever you decide to join PlayStation®Plus, there will be a minimum of 10 games for you to start playing right away.

So which games? Let’s go take a look. Oh and if you see a number in brackets, it’s a Metacritic score for your reference.

PlayStation®Plus Presents

Not content with offering you those 10 titles I also have another small announcement to make – here in SCEE we’ll be running a little sideline within Plus called ‘PlayStation®Plus Presents…’

We’ll be searching for the very best independently developed titles for PlayStation 3 right now and in the future – those games that really stand out we’ll hand pick for our Plus subscribers. Each ‘PlayStation®Plus Presents’ game will be available to download in Plus at no extra cost for 8 weeks from the moment it launches on the Store, meaning that as well as blockbuster titles, as a Plus subscriber you’ll be able to play the very best of indie too.

Our first PPP title will be an extremely cool little shooter called Retro/Grade – it won the Audience Award at IndieCade 2010 and was a finalist for Excellence in Audio and Excellence in Design in the 2009 Independent Games Festival. I urge you all to go and check it out because you’ll get to play it soon enough.

Retro/Grade is just the first such title that will be available at no cost to Plus subscribers when it launches later this summer.

Now you know what’s yours for the taking, I’m sure you have some questions.
I’ve tried to answer a few pre-emptively below.

What about my PS one, PS2 and minis?

Based on all the feedback we’ve had from you guys over the last couple of years, we’ve decided that our subscribers would be better served by offering you more digital Blu-ray titles and top of the line PSN games, rather than scrabbling around to find a compelling PS one or minis titles. That said, if a truly awe inspiring minis title or one of the greatest PS one or PS2 titles that ever existed suddenly shows up on PS Store, you can bet your britches that we’ll secure it for you.

How come SCEA subscribers get 12 games and we only get 10?

It’s true, SCEA get two more games than SCEE subscribers up front.

However, most titles in SCEA Plus will stick around for 16 weeks before being refreshed – in SCEE we keep games for a maximum of 12 weeks, which means we rotate through more games in a full year – in fact we are committed to delivering over 45 games to you as part of your subscription before June 2013, and that’s before we factor in any extra minis or PS one titles that might show up. Additionally, any ‘PlayStation®Plus Presents’ games will be extra to the standard game rotation.

Will those 45 games include repeating games that have already been offered in Plus from the past?

As you’ve already seen, some of the games that are being provided to you may have been discounted in Plus before – we will try to keep this to a minimum. We’ve committed to offering only the absolute best games available on the PSN Store, which means meeting a minimum quality requirement. I cannot guarantee that you won’t be offered a game that has been discounted before but there will be more than enough brand new titles and games that have never been in Plus to provide you an astonishing amount of value, even if you purchased all of those discounted games previously. What we won’t do is ever offer something that’s been included as a 100% discount title before unless it’s a true ‘second-chance’ offer – that means it doesn’t count towards your total.

Guys, while you’re reading this I am almost certainly asleep in a strange bed in California so please bear with me – I will do my best to respond to as many comments as I can while I’m here at E3.

In the meantime, I want to see feedback, I want to see suggestions for games to be included later in the year, I want to hear anything you have to say about these changes!

In the meantime, enjoy the anticipation of receiving five top class digital Blu-ray titles, four of the best of the Store’s back catalogue and one brand new PSN game, all still just £39.99/€49.99 for a year’s subscription.

And of course, if you join right now, there’s still time to get May’s content as well.

  • wicked, awesome and so on… probably the best opportunity to get the ps+ for those who haven’t got it yet. nice update.

  • Very cool line up, although I’ll definitely miss the Minis. So will you bring something else to Vita plussers?

    • We know people are seen to see PS Plus involved with PlayStation Vita and are listening closely to your feedback on the subject. That’s all I can say at this time.

  • Amazing, thanks, this is the best reason yet to be a PlayStation Plus member. One question though.

Can we play the games throughout our entire Plus subscription? Or do they stop being playable once they are taken off the list of 10 games?

    • Good question! That aspect is the same as before – the dates for availability are regarding your initial download of the game – the same as now.

If you make sure that you go and opt to download a game before it exists Plus, then you can download it and keep playing it for as long as you’re a subscriber.

Likewise, if you are running short of space, you can delete it from your hard drive and retrieve it from your download list at ANY time – but you have to keep your subscription active.

  • Also, I’d love to get more followers on Twitter – @MakoD

  • Top Wants

    Tombi – PS1
    Crash Nitro Kart – PS2

  • nice line-up, thanks… but i’ve got one question:

will PS+ stay as PS3+, or can we see some PSVita freebies/exclusives/discounts soon?

  • Need a bigger hdd :(

  • Ah after just seeing that the US lineup included R&C:All4One, I was hoping we’d be getting that too, but oh well, maybe in the next update aye ? lol

    Great improvement guys,thumbs up!

    • That’s a distinct possibility and another good point.

The schedule for PlayStation Plus is set for a good while but it has been designed to be a little bit fluid.

If you want to see a game included – ANY game – ask for it. That’s not a promise to deliver but a promise to look into it.

  • Looks interesting.

  • as PSMako already asked this, are those 10 games playable throughout my entire playstation plus subscription and every 3 months 2 new games are added? or are the games only playable for 3 months?

    • Playable for as long as you remain a subscriber and accessible in your download list, as long as you downloaded them initially.

  • almighty-slayer

    Already own all of those.

So uh, thanks but no thanks :)

  • Ah, no Ratchet & Clank? Meh… might just buy the American PS+, buy some cards online. xD

  • almighty-slayer

Well, i don’t own Space Marines, but there’s a very good reason for that :P

    • Which is? Have you actually tried it? I was pleasantly surprised after I got over the first bit. I wouldn’t have put it into Plus if I didnt think it was fun.

  • This is really cool. Getting MotorStorm and Outland. Suggestion for next update: R&C:All4One.

  • US got better games i would take Ratchet, Lara Croft over Chime Super Deluxe, Renegade Ops, Oddworld anyday :/

    • 1. I disagree but you’re entitled to that opinion. ;)
      2. I wouldnt worry too much about what the US has and we don’t just yet.

  • So excited about this! I must say, I am a little disappointed that PSOne Classics and PS2 games are being given a back door, but at the same time I just can’t say no to Infamous 2, Darksiders, Motorstorm, Oddworld… I don’t know where I’m gonna find the time to play these games!

    • Like I said – it’s not NEVER but it’ll have to be a really special title to make it in.

  • So where before we kept every single game that you gave to us for as long as we remained subscribers, we will now lose three games each month that you gave to us previously? I understand they will be replaced by other games, but we are still losing games that we would otherwise have kept and perhaps enjoyed until our subscriptions expired. If this is the case, just how how much notice do you intend to give of the games before revoking games. I’d hate to be working towards game completion only to have Sony delete it from my machine.

I guess I’m disappointed really that PS Plus subscriptions would now being used as a marketing tool to entice users into buying games. It sounds to me like the free games would now be better described as “time limited demos”.

    • No, you’ve misunderstood.
You lose access to nothing. Keep your subscription active and you have access to EVERYTHING you ever download.

  • Great improvement of Plus!

    Thanks guys.

  • @16 Chime is a great game! I bought it when it was discounted for PS+, it’s addictive as hell!

  • just to check, it seems to say we lose these games on a regular basis instead of keeping them throughout the ps+ reg period, can you clarify?

  • As a long-time PS+ member I feel… absolutely ecstatic about this. I’m glad I recently upgraded my poor old 120GB drive.

  • Will these titles be playable on my PS3s as long as my PS+ subscription is active, or will the games expire after a while?

  • “Avatars: Panther! Rhino! Tiger! Walrus… er… Giant Squid?!” Is that Tokyo Jungle avatars :D

  • Ross is LBP2 for free And infamous 2 aswell ?

  • meh this instant collection is crud compared to SCEA.
Its because of stupid decisions like this that SCEE makes, I have started moving to PC games. It cant fathom why Sony is so stupid to insist it needs to have a different store team for the US and EU – not needed at all.

  • Cool, and thanks for still including PSN titles, when I heard about this I was afraid it would end up full retail titles only, and risk overlapping with a lot of stuff I already owned.

Oh, and thanks for Awesomenauts, it’s the best PvP game I’ve ever played. I’d never had tried it without PS+!

    • You’re very welcome! Awesomenauts really lives up to its name in my opinion.

We’ll ensure you get a good mix of top line download only PSN titles and Digital Blu-Ray.

  • I don’t know if am smiling with joy or crying in grief it a tough 1 to call, yes there got 12 we get crappy of ten there get SR-2 we don’t

what they didn’t say is choose said numbers so we download all for free.

but what about cloud gaming i hope the more this month keep your eyes on store updates means great stuff & E3 is still on-going.

  • YES!!!! it’s good to see that you guys listened and have decided to give us “proper” games instead of minis and ps1 games since i basically never played the minis or ps1 games i have got on my ps+ sub which i have had since almost its launch date but i have played a few maybe 5-10% of them the others have just been downloaded and unused. I love ps+ and now I love it even more, yay more games and more fun.

  • Carnivius_Prime

Am a bit unclear. Is Infamous 2 free only to new subscribers? Cos I’ve been wanting that game price reduced for a year now. I rented it originally and have wanted the digital version to own but it’s always been £50 which is too much for any game. I’d rather have that than Darksiders of which I did own the disc version and didn’t enjoy at all.

Space Marine might be alright. Someone recommended it to me a while ago. I dunno. I’m not big on gaming at moment anyways. Too much crud going on occupying my mind so I tend to just stick with my faves such as Uncharted 3 and Shank 2 online.

    • All the listed titles are available for anyone to download and play as part of the subscription, new subscribers and old.

  • the only thing, and its a minor disadvantage is that the (correct me if Im wrong) us update is on 5th and european on 6th june.

  • I’ve got the same question as PSMako: will the games be playable through the entire Plus subscription or only until they are refreshed?

Why I ask is simple: my playtime is increasingly limited so I’ve been banking on Plus to stack up on games throughout the year to play during the summer and other small breaks I manage to get.

  • will tomba be included for free ps+ content? some of us still love ps1 games

  • Carnivius_Prime

@16 please. Renegade Ops is a far, far better game than godawful Lara Croft.

  • @31

I believe games will stay as long you have PS+. With so much games and 12 weeks of rotation I am sure there isn’t such kind of limitation.

  • I thought there was going to be different prices for PS+?

  • Excellent stuff, although I have to admit I was hoping for Vita to be included in PS+.
    Any plans for that?
Similar to those above me, I’ll echo the question- can we play the games after they’ve been refreshed? I suppose we can, similar to current PS+, but am I right?

Also, who among us has a HDD big enough?!! :P

  • If the games do indeed become unplayable once they’re removed from the rota, then it’s a pretty shoddy service. And it’s a shame that just as Vita is about to get PS1 support we no longer get PS1 games from Plus. But still, good idea.

  • This is just UNBELIAVABLE!!!!! Are you sure you’re not loosing money on this? WOW!

  • Carnivius_Prime

Also I liked PS1/PS2 games being available on Plus. I was waiting in hope of the Maximo games and Godhand appearing on Plus cos at £7.99 each they’re too expensive for old PS2 games that have no HD, online or trophy support.

    • I understand – I am a fan of the PSone and PS2 titles as well but we’ve made this decision based on feedback and also analysis of service uptake – they’re just not that popular and by dropping them we are able to offer you a wider selection of PSN and also the Plus Presents titles in future months.

Like I said, if an amazing PSone or PS2 game shows up I’ll be sure you guys get it in Plus.

  • very happy with this, i knew there was to be some disparity from what US users were offered but as a relatively recent PS+ adopter the gap doesn’t at all seem bad.

Now we just need to hear what you’re doing for PS+ on Vita!

  • Seems to me that PS+ just got worse. Better games yes but no longer “forever”. What if I don’t want to play Space Marine this month? Or what if I get so into Infamous 2 that I don’t touch Motorstorm?

Glad I’ve got a few months left on my subscription before I have to make the decision to renew or not!

One question are LBP2, Infamous 2 and Motorstorm available to PS+ users who are subscribers right now or just those who renew/join?

  • Amazing content, already got most of the games though (besides Warhammer and Apocalypse). I fully support the direction that PLUS is taking, must admit though that I’m puzzled how this works out on Sony’s side.

  • almighty-slayer

My only suggestion is to extend to Vita.

  • Presumably it’s still going to work the same, even once a title vanishes after its 12 weeks we can use it for the duration of our plus membership right?

  • Are these games free for LIFE, or are they only valid for the length of your subscription? I only got LBP1 and Stacking free with my 1 year membership, everything else expired. Please tell me SOME of these games will be ours to keep and not simply rented.

    • Duration of subscription only I’m afraid. If you ideologically disagree with subscription services then Plus still won’t be for you.

  • Carnivius_Prime

@36 I have a 640GB drive and it’s plenty big enough for me. Well, since I started getting rid of stuff I don’t actually play like the tedious Resident Evil games and some other large ‘freebies’ (Tomb Raider Underworld is a joke right? Awful game).

  • Fruit_Loop_1969

Well done guys!!!! You have definitely pulled out ALL the stops this time!!!

    Games for the future:-

    Any Bioshock game
    Any Dead Space game
    Resident Evil 5
Or is that pushing the boat out to far :-O lol!!!

Well done though, pat on the back well deserved!!!

  • So Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, and all those other games listed there today, are free for Plus-members? Awesome!

One thing though… I DON’T HAVE MY PS3 BACK YET!!!

How long will those games be available for download until they are refreshed? I really don’t want to miss out on a free VF5: Final Showdown… I’ve been securing money to buy it!
