ICO And SotC: Reviews Are In And Bonus Content Unveiled

78 5

It’s almost here! With the release of ICO & Shadow of the Colossus HD Classics coming this week, I hope you guys are as excited as I am to be able to help Yorda escape the castle with ICO and, as Wanda, to take down some massive Colossi in full HD (and 3D for those of you lucky enough to have a 3D TV).

Ico Shadow

ICO & Shadow of the Colossus are two of my favourite games with some of the most innovative gameplay and beautiful art direction seen in gaming to this day. If you missed them first time around or if you don’t know anything about these games, don’t just take my word for how great they are; we’re currently running at a metacritic of 90% (at time of posting), based on 32 reviews. Some of which I’ve added below (please forgive me on the quote translation):

10/10 – VideoGamer.com

“You’ll be rewarded with an experience that will stay with you for a very long time. For under £30, you’ll be picking up two of the most important games ever made.”

9.5/10 – Vandal.net

“A must-buy for anyone with a passion for video games.”

9.5/10 – Multiplayer.it

“Two works of art for less than the price of one game”

9/10 – Eurogamer.net

“This HD collection is such a delight.”

9/10 – gameover.gr

“Two masterpieces / clear proof that games can be art”

9/10 – gamereactor.se

“Do yourself a favour now, and get this collection”

9/10 – CVG

“Two PS2 legends; one epic PS3 makeover”

9/10 – meristation.com

“Gaming poetry, now in HD and 3D”

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection: Bonus Content, Trophies RevealedShadow_17

ICO & Shadow of the Colossus are true gaming masterpieces created and developed by the amazing team headed up by gaming luminary Fumito Ueda. Along with the two dynamic themes (one for ICO and one for Shadow of the Colossus), for fans of Ueda-san we’ve also included two videos which are available via an in-pack voucher.

The first video is an original concept video for NICO. NICO was originally planned to be spiritual successor to ICO and was an online game where teams of Colossus hunters would track, battle and take down huge Colossi together. The core gaming experience and ideas ultimately became what we now know as Shadow of the Colossus.

There’s also a 12-minute behind-the-scenes video filmed on location by our US colleagues at the Sony Japan offices in Shinagawa. This video features interviews with key production staff members about the making of ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and, of course, The Last Guardian. The video includes the team’s thoughts on the HD Classics, as well as concept art and prototype footage of all three games. Plus you’ll get to see some exclusive never-before-seen footage from The Last Guardian.

Below is a short preview of the videos, to give you an idea of what to expect

Unfortunately, due to some technical issues, you will not be able to download this extra content using the in-pack voucher until Monday 10th October. Please accept our sincerest apologies.

Finally, thanks for reading this post and be sure to pick up your copy when it’s out in stores this week.

  • “Unfortunately, due to some technical issues, you will not be able to download this extra content using the in-pack voucher until Monday 10th October.”

Because Ross has lost the key to The Secret Games Cupboard. Again! ;)

  • Can we see that legend on PSN? Thank you.

  • This is the game makeover that I have been dream of, can’t wait to play it when it comes out…get out already! lol

  • I’ve never played this game, will there be a demo????

  • Got my copy today. I think I’ll start on it tomorrow when I’m fully rested and fit for a fight.

  • I hope the extra content that’s available for download is already on the disc and the voucher just unlocks it. It’s a Blu-ray, use it I mean. ;) My hard drive is running low on space.

  • Can’t get my copy since I’m broke. It’s one of the most painful moments in my entire gaming life.

  • Will these games find their way into the PS Store?

(Secretly hoping for a PS Plus discount.)

  • Those of you wishing for it to come to PSN should watch out, there’s always a markup compared to boxed games (like Driver for £58 last week!!!)

  • Seems like quite a lot of effort went into these versions – I hope first party studios handle the inevitable Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank remasters.

I guarantee you that I will buy this eventually – I only ever completed Shadow, but not ICO. So a justified purchase!

  • I am looking forward for the games. Pity I am short on money but I will get it as soon as possible.

Are going to see any more information on next weeks game announcement?

  • i asked before and got no reply, but will ask again, can you’s please release a short demo, or maybe a trial for plus for these games, i unfortunately never got to play them and have no clue what they are, but having read the comments from the people who know then they obviously must be good, Yet i must see for myself, as they also seem to be ‘that’ type of game, add to that the amount of new games and me and maybe others might never see them, and so if the comments are true will miss out big.surely you would not wish for this.thnx.

  • So looking forward to replaying SotC and playing through Ico for the first time.
Now get to work on Last Guardian it seems to have vanished of the face of the planet.

  • Will it be released in PSN??

  • Can we have soon more PS2 classic games on blu-ray or on PSN please? :P
(or have PS2 playback on a new PS3 soon? So i can play my 70’ish PS2 games without getting the PS2 out & falling over those Pad leads…remember them?) :D

+ I would LOVE those ‘Bitmap Brothers’ games from the Amiga days like GODS, Magic Pockets etc etc on PSN? Please someone do them!?!? :P

  • @ Carl-G

Magic Pockets……Now that brings back memories!

Betty Boop soundtrack & it was on some weekend show, as a phone in game, Alive & kicking or Motormouth I think!!??

I miss the Amiga days & it would have been great, if the emulator on the Wii was easier to use :(

You can purchase a legit copy of an emulator with all the games from here for your PC: http://www.amigaforever.com/

  • Cannon Fodder & Sensible World Of Soccer anyone? ;)

  • Is this strictly a blu-ray release or like GoW remakes and released as digital downloads too?

  • what would happen if someone was to accidentally enter the code before the 10th?

  • IS this going to be released on the store? Has that already been answered?

  • All I want to know is.. are they coming as a download on the PSN store ..? or will there only be a disc version of the HD remake of these fantastic games..?

  • I’ll always treasure my card case copies of the originals but I can’t wait to replay both of these :)

  • I was asked the other day what my favourite games of time was…

I’ll put it this way, I can’t wait to purchase this later.

I was expecting SCEE to do there usual two step forward, one step back syndrome, and without fail again not being able to download the bonus content is just flippin’ funny.

First no bonus directors interview of GOW volume 2, now this.
    Can’t a game release happen without a:

    Day-one patch.

    Bugs & glitches.

    missing content.

    Price errors.

Remember when a game was just released, thee end.

  • No demo, no buy for sure.

  • @ OttoT

    Your loss.

    Have a nice day.

  • Demo??? Why on earth do you need a demo for a game that was released a decade ago? Two of the greatest games of all times in one box. Just do yourself a favour and go buy it.

Ico and SotC are classics, they’re the Iliad, the Hamlet, the Godfather Part II of the gaming world. You don’t demo Shakespeare, you don’t preview Homer. Get in there and buy it!

  • Might not be to everyones taste though Victor!

Personally, I can’t wait & I have enough credit at Gamestation for this & RAGE Collectors Box! :)

  • @KAP

Indeed, I do remember those days, but I also remember that when those games were released they too were often broken and back then the only way to fix it was to wait for the next iteration of the game 12 months later.

We do look back at days gone by with rose tinted spectacles on – same as we think summer lasted forever.

  • ico and sotc on ps store???

    i’d rather buy digital version

  • #29, not sure. I’ve asked but no reply.

If they are released on the PSN Store, I’m having them from there providing the prices aren’t crazy

  • I’ve been sold on this for a long, long time.

  • Game: bought and on its way to me now.
Video extras: should have been on the Blu-ray in the first place but now we can’t download them the legit way in good time so most SCEE customers are stuck watching crummy YouTube quality rips.

  • Haya

This is, quite simply, the reason I bought a ps3. Might well require a change of underwear when I boot up SOTC for the first time in years.

Does anyone know whether the themes are on the disc or are they download only too? I wouldn’t normally care but my internet is down at the mo and I would be a sad panda if I had to miss out for a while!

  • I got my monies ready for friday, i was a fool who got rid of them both those ps2 days never ever finish them.

    Day 1 Buy ;)

    [insert the SCEE abuse here]

  • Can’t wait to get this after work on Friday! It’s been too long since I’ve been able to play these amazing games. I’d re-buy these games over any other new releases on the horizon if I had to. :D

  • This may seem bad but, I don’t have a clue what these games are, I have never heard of them. Are they really as good as you all make them out to be? Am I missing out if I don’t play these games?

  • Hey guys, just a heads-up. GameOver.gr gave this collection a 10/10. And this is the metacritic quote of this site for the game.

“Simply put, this is a unique gaming gem that comes around only once in every 10 years. Every PS3 owner should be proud to add it to his or her collection.”

  • SwordsmanGRE is correct. Αs you can see from Gameover.gr’s link in this article the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection was rated with 10.

Also …awesome games, I will buy the collection soon.

  • @frodouk

Completely agree with you but you forget not all games were re-released with bugs fixed, devs seem to rely on patches way too much.

I’d rather my games delayed to mate them polished to perfection then issued 5 patches in 5 months.

“A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever” – Wise words from Miyomoto.

Rose-tinted? maybe.. But I wouldnt change the last 20yrs of gaming for what we have today, no-way!

  • i hope version for Polish market gets extras…

  • OMG I cannot wait for this to come out – I’ve been counting down the days!

I first played Ico when it originally came out around 10 years ago, and it remains to this day, the best game I have ever played. Not because it has mind boggling puzzles or fantastic monsters, because it doesn’t, but because of it’s simplicity, beauty and surreal quality. It’s just a game about a little boy leading an ethereal young wisp of a girl around as they try to escape a castle, but it’s done with such astounding beauty, I defy anyone not to feel quite overwhelmed as they play it. The game stays with you for a long time after you’ve completed it.

If you’ve never played this, do buy it, you’ll be missing out on a fantastic game if you don’t.

  • ICO was one of the greatest games I can remember playing… Can’t wait to play it again. Cheers!

  • I wish I had a time machine, cause this night will never pass :V

  • Love my PS3, the only flaw is that I couldn’t play SOTC on it.
    FIXED!!! :-)

  • Hi,

Can you confirm in the PAL version there is only a 12 minute behind-the-scenes video, a NICO concept video, and 2 dynamic themes, but DOES NOT INCLUDE:
“•20+ minute round table discussion between Ueda-san (Lead Designer, Director), Kaido-san (Line Producer) and Hosono-san (Designer).
    •ICO concept video
•Shadow of the Colossus concept video”
as is the case in the US version?

Also can you confirm that the extra video content is downloadable via PSN voucher, NOT packaged on disc like the US version?

  • @punster

If its true someone screwed us…

  • If anyone is interested in other HD Classics, Zavvi have an excellent deal on the Tomb Raider Trilogy £9.85! http://goo.gl/ygxMv

  • I’m gonna go pick up my copy later today, without a doubt my most anticipated HD remake this far.

  • pretty funny we can’t download the bonus content, while for the Canadian version, the content is already on the disk…srsly SCEE…

  • @ punster

no extras on the disk….and the voucher doesn’t work -_-‘

dear sony, start treating Europe the same as America….next time I am just importing the game because it seems Sony doesn’t care for us Europeans anyway.
