Amy Is Survival Horror Evolved, Coming To PSN This Summer

53 0

If you’re into new survival-horror experiences, this post is for you! After recently releasing Red Johnson’s Chronicles on PSN, we’re excited to be publishing Amy on PSN later in 2011. Amy is the upcoming game from Paul Cuisset, who may be a familiar name for some of you; In the early 90s Paul created Flashback, a classic game that is credited today as a great source of inspiration by respected game designers.

With Amy, we’re now bringing Paul’s innovative concepts to PS3 owners with a new development philosophy that bridges the gap between innovative indie PSN games and very ambitious Blu-ray titles.

Amy for PS3 (PSN)

Dark Days

The story begins on a rainy December day in 2034. Global warming is in full swing, spreading diseases and natural disasters all around the world. You play as Lana, a character who regains consciousness following a comet impact in the small town of Silver City. Upon awakening, you discover that Silver City has descended into chaos. Violence, fury, rage, wreckage and death: the world you knew has been torn to Hell.

Struck by a mysterious virus, most of the townspeople have transformed into gruesome creatures and now prowl the streets as a wild horde. You’re wounded and you know you must escape, but you’re infected and the viral process has already begun: Hell is now pumping through your veins. There are only two ways to survive the infection. One is by locating special medical equipment found on the corpses of soldiers who have invaded Silver City. The other lies with Amy.

Unlikely Alliance

By your side is a strange little girl named Amy, who can’t speak but whose face expresses both fear and sadness. While you’re fleeing and trying to protect her, you realize that being close to her stops the contamination and even temporarily heals you. That might be the reason why infected humans, grisly creatures, Special Forces combatants and even other survivors are after the two of you. To stay alive, you will have to help each other.

But contrary to many games with a secondary character, Amy is neither a super warrior nor a docile character that follows you. You can use her small size and weight to reach inaccessible areas and ask her to do specific actions. Being a child, Amy is also naturally curious and will explore the environment with you – sometimes she might even draw your attention to something you would have missed.

More importantly, Amy possesses several special abilities. By pressing R1, you can hold her hand. This enables you to heal, but also lets you feel Amy’s heartbeat through the rumble of the DualShock 3, which lets you feel her stress level while you explore dangerous locations. This might be very useful, even if holding her hand slows you down. Amy also has several other special abilities that I’m not going to detail now…but trust me, you will like them.

Survival Stealth

Your overall goal is to escape with Amy, and find a safe shelter to save her (we call this mechanic “exfiltration”). You’ll hide, run, fight, solve puzzles and use cunning, and you will often be free to choose your tactics. In addition, while you progress, you will meet different characters and explore the special bond between Amy and Lana.

One of our goals is to make you feel the fragility of Lana and Amy. Lana is not trained to fight; Amy is just a kid. But you can try to avoid your enemies, for example, by hiding in a closet or under a table. While hiding, you can spy on your pursuers…but be careful!

Another option is to use your infection to your advantage. When you show signs of infection, most of the enemies won’t attack you if you move slowly. But you will have to avoid the soldiers, who will shoot you on sight, and you’ll need to stop the infection before it’s too late. Most of the enemies are able to communicate with each other so if one spots you, the others will rush in to attack. If you’re clever, you can exploit their intelligence to deceive them and trigger a fight between soldiers and infected humans.

But being smart won’t be enough. When cornered, you’ll need to gather your courage and fight back tooth and nail because your enemies are fierce. Although you have an inventory, you won’t be choosing between tons of items: You will have to make do with small weapons: clubs, crowbars and the like. Lana only carries light items with her and uses only one weapon at a time. In a pinch, you can sometimes use the environment to your advantage, for instance by attracting an enemy into a water puddle and electrifying it.

Amy’s Atmosphere

We’ve also worked hard on the script to provide you with a fully coherent experience. From a train station, to a hospital, going through a subway or the dark streets of Silver City, you will discover a unique atmosphere with Amy.

Finally, I’d like to share a worldwide exclusive video with you, a video we’ve just made to show off the game’s visuals and atmosphere. We will soon be releasing a new video demonstrating certain gameplay moments, so stay tuned! You can watch the video at the top of this blog post.

  • I am looking forward to this

  • I would really like Sony to do a Summer of PSN games like Xbox’s Summer of Arcades. Amy, Journey and a couple of other games would be perfect to take up some time in the summer. Both look really good and nothing else really big is coming out in the summer.

  • Looks cool

  • Wow, didn’t know about this game. Consider me interested, really looking forward to seeing some gameplay.

  • Good to see more survival horror games as they gradually have morphed into shooters & lost any feelings of fear.

  • Sounds really interesting.
As mentioned elsewhere a bit like Ico. With zombies/monsters/soldiers

  • I dislike horror games but this sounds interesting.
    I’ll wait your next video.

Yeah. A Summer with Amy and Journey could be a great move for gamers. From September on there will be too many games that will come out.

  • Will the game will support PlayStation Move?

  • I got interested in this when IGN first mentioned it. Even more when I found out this is a hand-holding game. Ico is my favorite game of all time. So if this is even half as good, it will be incredible. Can’t wait!

  • Extremly interested in this game, I will assume this is played in 3rd person? And if it has Blue Ray quality why don’t you just release it as blue-Ray? Have to say I rather have my games in a physical format than digital downloads.

  • Looks and sounds very interesting, though i have one main question… yes E3 has been on and everything. But there’s been no real update for the PSstore. You’ve given members 30days of playstation plus and then don’t update the store? Thats not right, in previous blog updates we where told that alot of content would be uploaded every week. So far – nothing much past the initial welcome back update over 2 weeks ago now.

  • @8 I haven’t heard anything about it being move compatible but I’m not sure if its a Sony exclusive.

The video above looks real good. I wonder if we’ll slowly see enemies begin to deteriorate and change gradually over the course of the game. I’ve being paying attention to this for quite a while.

  • all I’ve done is watch the vid and look at the pics and I want it

  • Colour me intrigued, this looks great!

  • Really looking forward to this.

Here’s hoping the Dualshock mechanics have an audio counterpart – since I don’t have Dualshocks and frankly don’t want one.

Glad to see a genuine survival horror as opposed to yet another third person shooter with zombies in.

  • this is most likely how resident evil should have been instead off all the crap reboot and remakes that are being developed, resident evil ain’t even a horror game anymore just a boring genric shooter.
so i gotta say looking forward 2 it

  • This summer?? Awesome will most probably buy this game :)

  • Can’t wait for this it sounds awesome! Dont let us down! :D

  • Looks great

  • Sounds very cool, I’ve been craving some good survival horror for years considering Resident Evil 5 was a crap action game, Dino Crisis died, Silent Hill sucked when Konami started outsourcing it to other developers etc. It’d be nice to have an atmospheric horror game that actually focuses on survival and not throwing powerful weapons and loads of ammo at you.

  • awesome, i’m so buying this

  • If it has got a great <> Storyline i will buy it 100%!I love Horror games,i am looking forward to this and Silent Hill 2,3 HD Collection! The only thing that PS3 is missing now is a new Fatal Frame or Fatal Frame 1,2,3 HD Collection!

  • sounds good, but I;ll only buy if it is available at a discount for PS + members.

  • Okay, I am interested. Lets hope it has a good strong story. Damn you Resident Evil 5!!

  • Looks good. Once it’s not €59.99 I’ll see about getting it.

  • I am very interested in this title. I love survival horror and the game play sounds interesting.

Story – If this game has a rich narrative then I am sold. I just hope the story, writing and voice acting is good. Hopefully there will be an explanation that makes sense as to why Amy keeps the virus at bay. Too many games these days put most of the focus on graphics tech instead of telling a great story.

    Can’t wait to see more!

Any official release date? Pricing? Will this have a platinum?

  • FOR PSN?! What the hell! Looks like a retail quality game. The graphics is gorgeous! It sounds really good too. A new creative take on the horror genre. Really interesting concept. Please get the atmosphere right and I’ll buy it day one. :) Price doesn’t matter for me with these types of games.

  • how much will it cost?? & how long is the game? i hope it’s over 4 or 5 hours.

  • I‘m a big fan of horror X-rated games so i hear of this on IGN too but however i‘m not impress yet if it like anything like red johnshon sure it did look great red & amy but i wasn’t impress with Red.

Red johnshon is not 16:9 friendly when i boot it up it goes to 4:3 ratio just like with zen Pinball 1 other small gripe about red is i didn’t like the characters on the black background it make it look cheap & Lazy. & it was off-putting but i was really dissed i didn’t get the discount.

in time and i always like to give New devs my money & not a cheapskate so i‘m asking 1 question will it be in 16:9 or 4:3?

  • obiadekanobi1980

still think infamous 2 is way overpriced this is how much they hate us how can they let retailers sell it for £39.99 and then charge us an extra tenner for no physical cover…… know what i say?? hope so because i cant type what i think itll get censord….

  • People found some gameplay!!! (note this is over a month old).

28# I think i read somee where that it will be about 6hour long and will cost about 12$

  • 30# ops meant over 2months old.

  • Wait what is this not a ps3 exklusive anymore?? Hype meter shrinks a little bit….

  • Whoa… I hate zombie games, but this sounds awesome!

  • did some1 say exclusive it is not it on XBLA as well it funny though red was a exclusive was it not? :|

  • 34# And it was exklusive 2months ago but for some reason it’s multiplattform now…..

  • This looks really interesting.

  • Looks interesting!
can’t wait to see more :-)

  • But global warming has shewn to be a farce cooked up by carbon_tax hungry weathermen & NWO mouthpiece Al Gore(whom has disappeared after after those scientists got sprung lying(again). Ne’er mind, It’s only a game…

  • Flashback was an awesome game back in the day´s.
    I´m following this title.

  • How much is this going to cost?

  • this looks epic! i cant wait to see more of this

  • Had flashback on the amiga. Many said that it was follow up of another another world. Anyway this one looks promising :P

  • Survival horror is dead on current consoles. I can’t believe that Siren Blood Curse is the ONLY decent survival horror game for PS3.
    Let’s name a few PS3 titles:
    – Resident Evil 5
    – Silent Hill: Homecoming
    – Dead Space series
    – F.E.A.R. series
    – Condemned 2
    – Bioshock series
    – Dead Rising 2
Those are NOT real survival horror games. If you think they are, then you don’t know what survival horror is.

Now Amy, please bring back the feeling I had in survival horror’s golden age 1996-2005.

  • kivi95, it doesn’t matter if it is multiplatform…..any great survival horror game will do! Honestly supporting a console is good, blind fanboism isn’r and this comes from a PS fanboy(that still retains the virtues of arguments and thought)

  • Flashback being one of my all-time favourite games, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this!

  • @ jazzy734 yeah well what about

SHADOWS OF THE DAMMED(apparently its amazing killer 7 dev mixed with resident evil 4 dev)

FEAR 3 (apparently john carpenters is envolved and possibility its good cause 1&2 were frankly awful)

both of the above are out on friday shadows of the dammed is already getting great reviews 9 out of 10 im hearing so stop moaning your not the only hardcore survival horror fan you know. yeah AMY looks good bet its a blu-ray game before long and by that i meen same as forbidden siren blood curse psn exclusive that was supposed to be episodic but intead was dumped on psn in one go bad form i thought especially seeing as each episode has a “previously on…” and “next time on…..” then shoved on the shelves on blu-ray oh and still no trophies! so lets hope amy is handled a little better eh?

  • @C_L_O_U_D_M_A_N

Flashback is not a survival horror game at all it is and i quote a “Cinematic platformer” think your getting a little confused mate but hey your not wrong about AMY it will be a awesome game that your right 100% on

  • Awesome !
Never heard of this game until now. I used to play FLASHBACK after school back in the day, a very memorable experience. Looks exactly like what I want from a survival horror game, intense sense of fear and urgency with a mysterious story & deep, intriguing characters.
Best of luck to Paul Cuisset and the team !
