PlayStation 5 price changes in the U.S.

New prices effective starting on August 21.

Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

The recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged, and we have no other price changes to announce for additional markets.

    So I presume a PS6 is going to be $999.99 on release.
    In a “challenging economy” you would think the price would go down not up.

    Sony: We’re not selling enough PS5’s people have less disposable income.

    Totally absurd for Sony to get this greedy following Nintendo Switch’s move with the Switch 2 and their overpriced key card games. I’ve already boycotted Nintendo and will not be buying a Switch 2 anytime soon if ever.

    Now Sony wants to push its greed too. They’ve been raising its membership prices and the PS5 Pro price without a disc drive was a joke at $700. Also, Sony pushed its Dualsense prices up by $5 not too long ago so a new controller costs $75 rather than $70. But Sony, the jokes on you when Gamers decide not to buy your overpriced products and Switch to PC gaming.

    I generally enjoy and support Playstation but I boycotted Sony when the overpriced PS3 came out at $600. Heck I even skipped the PS3 entirely and stopped gaming due to that greedy decision. It wasn’t the PS4 mid-cycle that I rediscovered my love for gaming and returned.

    NOTE: many gamers will quit due to corporate greed and Sony and Nintendo will lose valuable ongoing customers by trying to maximize profits. Suddenly, this affordable hobby is no longer. I’m all about businesses making a profit but there’s a breaking point too.

    What?! How could Sony do this? This is outrageous! It’s unfair! How is it that they’re not focusing on quality, and yet, they raise prices on the PS5 consoles?

    Let us hope with the U.S. region finally experiencing some of the price hike pain felt by regions like Down Under,Eu,UK etc., we don’t see any further hikes in PSN after already whacking us this year!🙏

    What I’d like to see in return for such hikes is far better efforts like the “Classics” collection presently on offer.
    How about a dreamlist request site like GOG Store? Far more 3rd party content with ps1/ps2 classics from more than just a drip release Capcom,(& so so Disney games)?
    Likewise if emulation of PS3 titles is so problematic,why not go the route of how the likes of Red Dead Redemption & get some ports of the likes of the Motorstorm series,or Resistance,Infamous, LBP 1 & 2 onto PS5? You don’t have to do a full price remake ala TLOU to test the waters if some sequels or reboots are warranted!

    Why are people getting angry? Sony has already provided a better option, the PC. That’s the platform they want to pursue, even though — just like with VR and GaaS — it will undermine their long-term competitiveness.

    I just got an open box Pro last week for $600. I knew these prices were incoming. Let’s not blame Sony but our almighty leader in Orange. We told you so. Everyone in the gaming world is in the find out stage now

    As a loyal customer of over 30 years, this is beyond ridiculous. I have so much invested in the Playstation ecosystem, but I’m thinking it’s time to slow down or just stop completely and enjoy all the games I’ve collected over the years. I was looking at getting a PS5 Pro recently. But now, I will NEVER get one! Is this an example of your price-raising sales strategy working?

    I thought as the console’s age out they go down in price to allow you to charge the higher price for a new console now these have gone up in price because PS5 was $299 i know because I bought 2… But now.
    In the same breath as mentioning PS5 pro and PS6. They are raising the price on the older stuff..

    They should’ve dropped the PS5 Pro’s price because they know that less people are buying it and nobody thinks that PS5 Pro will hit 4K 60fps for GTA 6.

    Looks like I’m not trading my PS5 in for a Pro now. Sony raises their prices because of tariffs but trade-in values constantly fall – despite the fact that GameStop or Sony can sell my “refurbished/reconditioned” PS5 at a higher tariff adjusted price. My PS5 is 2 years old. I’d need at least $350-$375 now to justify the out of pocket expense for a Pro. If the PS6 is going to drop for $600-$800, I’d be better off waiting for it …

    I had a switch, Series X and PS5 until I got rid of them because our old place got roaches. I was considering another PS5 because of the price point and not increasing prices on an older console. On principle, I unfortunately won’t buy it because you raised prices. I may end up having to get a Switch. Very disappointed with this decision. Wish there was a “I hate this” button.

    Imma be real, as a gamer of consoles from 90s to now, consoles have gone downhill after GameCube, PS3, and Xbox 360 era. When games compete not just graphics but consoles and party support of mechanics. I hate when Nintendo, Xbox and Now PS Jump these prices for no explanation and then try to save face and think later “We need to comeup for a reason”. Im seriously done in this year of consoles as a whole and focus on PC games from now on my RTX 3070 and RTX5080 PCs. Its too ridiculous at this point and NO excuse can save this anymore.

    @Robocod_91 EXACTLY. But no, who would care about or buy PS3 trilogy remasters of Motorstorm or Resistance or Killzone or Ratchet and Clank Quadrilogy or Infamous or any games still stuck on PS3 only like GOW Ascension too? I most certainly would not.
    No, Sony are too busy making genius decisions like an Unreal Engine 5 DEMAKE of Until Dawn that nobody asked for….. OR bought.

    As a once* die-hard, harcore PlayStation fan: you guys got JOKES! this will be another year I will not be renewing ps plus and ps5 will most likely be my final ps ever. PS5 STILL HAS NO GAMES by the way! Gaming has seriously gone down the drain with endless greed.
