  • PlayStation is gonna have to fill for bankruptcy and have to deal multiple law suits pretty soon if they want to do a quick change scheme.

  • “But don’t be a jerk” Well how about you, Sony?
Will Spider-Man 2 make it to catalogue day 1? No? When will at least GoW: Ragnarok make it into catalogue?

  • “Your cancellation is confirmed. The PlayStation Plus Essential: 12 Month Subscription subscription will cancel on 09/07/2024. You can reactivate the subscription anytime before 09/07/2024.”

The culmination of having been a paid member since September 2013, every year without fail. Having been a Playstation console owner since the PS1, having owned MULTIPLE units each generation, having been in the user club that was the precursor to PS Plus (forget what they called it back in the day), having been one of the home beta playtesters during the PS2/PS3 era, and now you’ve gone a bridge too far Sony. I am not paying one. more. red. cent. to be able to play online or get cloud saves, but let me truly illuminate for you, my malicious videogame overlords, the stack of dominoes you’ve set to fall with me.

I own 2 PS5s, one in my bedroom and one in my livingroom. One I’ve had since ALMOST launch (Dec 31, 2020) and when you all said “Games will be $10 more now” I laughed and said “Nope, you all don’t launch complete games day one anyway, I’ll wait six months until it’s all patched, maybe has the DLC released and comes to the store for $30, not one more red cent Sony.” I’ve mostly stuck to that, as Returnal was the only game I bought for $70 at launch and I regret that ever so much. It was a good lesson in patience. Sony is trying to test my FOMO threshold but the FOMO is low with this one, Mr. Ryan.

Then you all came out with this 3 tiered membership rolling the Now into Plus, and I was a bit nervous at the time that it would affect my subscription/pricing for what I was getting. Crisis averted. I stayed on the essential tier yet still somewhat irritated that I was paying $60 a year essentially for cloud saves and online play. Not being an online gamer and having nearly no friends on the Playstation platform I only dabbled in it a bit to play a couple multiplayer games with my wife…who…also…needed a $60 subscription…see where this is headed Sony?

Sure I could afford the extra $20 a year ($40 really, but $160 a year just so my wife and I can play online MP together? Take a hike), and yes part of my begrudging agreement to pay the outrageous ask of $60 per PS Plus account in my household was in maintaining the access to my nearly 200 game PS Plus log of titles I built up over the past 10 years. EVEN SO…This blog post has prompted me to evaluate their true value and the sunk cost fallacy of paying to keep that collection…I reviewed the titles and see maybe 10 I have much interested in checking out…out of nearly 200, so while I was happy to pay the $60 begrudgingly to maintain that catalog, that was my upper limit. My subscription has a year left, 10 titles I want to play, so about 1 a month and I’ll be ok with losing them. Getting onto that. As Jack said in Fight Club “The things you own can end up owning you.” Well I am quite done with Sony trying to own me. A bridge too far, the FOMO is low with this one.

But what else has this prompted in my relationship with Playstation? Well as I said before, the $10 price dis-incentivized me from buying new PS5 games. I have 2 PS5s but the fact you’ve priced the lowest tier of PS Plus out of my range of what I’m willing to pay and paywalled save backups of ANY KIND you’ve dis-incentivized me from buying ANY PS5 game now or multiplatform games on Playstation at all. So now you’ve made it so only one of my PS5s is really of any utility to me so you’ve dis-incentivized me from buying multiple consoles from you in the future for different rooms. Not only that I have a pretty nice gaming laptop I use exclusively for that purpose and a nice shiny Steam account that doesn’t charge me to play online OR to back up my saves on the cloud….oh did I mention I am an Xbox Gold member? So yes the money I can save in migrating away from Playstation Plus could very handily come in useful with a shiny new Game Pass sub (the basic rate of Game Pass would run me about what I pay for Gold and PS Plus now). All that said, if I DID want to break down and buy a first party PS title here and there (after it’s been out several months and on discount, see above my thoughts on launch titles)…well Sony your attempt to sucker $20 out of me is looking much more like a huge loss in business from me, a Playstation player for the past 27 years. Until now my chosen ecosystem. And for what, as Margie says in Fargo, “Just for a little bit of money”.

So no Mr. Ryan, would you kindly take your price hike, fold it in half, and hike it you know where? I’m done.

-Paywalling PS5 save backups behind an $80 subscription is TRASH and makes me not want to buy PS5 games.
-Paywalling GAME DEMOS/TRIALS behind a PREMIUM subscription is TRASH and something I’ve never been suckered into. A game trial is a COMMERCIAL, if you don’t want to convince me to buy your games by letting me sample them FREE that’s YOUR poor marketing, not my loss. I just won’t buy your games.
-Paywalling online multiplayer play behind an $80 subscription is TRASH and most of my friends and family that game are ALL on PC, and I have one of those capable as my PS5.
-Giving out Saints Row ’22 the month you try to fleece your fanbase and saying the price hikes are for being able to “continue to bring you quality offerings” is TRASH. Seriously, nobody wants any of this month’s free titles, it’s broken low reviewed crap shovelware. Mr. Ryan would you kindly take your Saint’s Row and …well you know what to do with it, Jim.

With that I close with just two further comments. First, to take some artistic license with Kratos’ words, “Don’t be Sony….be better.” You have disappointed me Mr. Ryan. After 27 years as a pretty loyal customer your greed to scratch another $20 from me has just snapped the camel’s back and I am tired of feeling defrauded and abused with your anti-consumer crap. the FOMO is low with this one, but the FAFO is high with Playstation. I’m done, I cancel, I am your monster no longer.

  • I’m sorry, I’m cancelling. Ps plus wasn’t even worth 60 dollars and now it’s 80? Gonna move to Pc where online is free. We have options Sony, we’re not trapped in your ecosystem, at your mercy paying whatever you deem we pay.

  • I’m sorry Sony for my comment! We forgive you, I wasn’t thinking right when I posted that OF COURSE I’ll happily pay for the great service that is ps plus

  • At this point they don’t even listen to to customers

    • They don’t. It’s kind of interesting because greedy. Sony is back again. I guess they didn’t learn after the fiasco/disaster of the PlayStation 3 launch. They barely survived that. Then gave a whole speech about all for the gamers and you think they would’ve learned? Nope, they’re right back to square one the moment they had another successful hit. $80 to basically access occasional multiplayer and back of saved file is comical. No longer worth it. $60 wasn’t also, but I held on thinking maybe the greed corps would offer MP/Save or just MP access.

  • Cancel ur ps plus now guys

Don’t buy ps plus after September 6

Let’s drop their stock market price

If we don’t do something about this price They will increase the prices even more in future.

    • Drop their price?, unfortunately no, it shot up when they made this announcement, the greedy pigs are salivating right now.

  • This is awesome, great lineup. Thank you so much! And that’s a very fair price increase, don’t let the negative comments suggest otherwise. ❤️

  • Don’t raise the price of the Subscription. I was soon planning on purchasing the 99.99$ PS Plus Extra but these changes are only going to forever keep me away from it. Please realize this is a mistake all around. To the player base, and long term business.

  • You guys are so spineless bro. If you’re gonna screw your customers like this at least have the backbone to not hide it.

  • Why does the currency conversion make no sense? If it is converted from yen to dollars, the price would be as follows.

    Essential: 6,800 Yen -> 46.49 USD
    Extra: 11,700 Yen -> 79.99 USD
    Premium: 13,900 Yen -> 95.03 USD

Where does the added cost come from? It really makes you evaluate whether it is worth continuing to pay for this subscription.

  • If they had said, “Hey guys, instead of Saints Row this month, we’re going to give you syphillis,” I think I’d be fine with that. Also, shove those price rises right up your trumpet. Thanks.

  • Been a good run but I’m out when my sub ends, utterly egregious price gouging and near consistent trash games every month. Was looking to trade in my ps4 for a new machine anyway so I’ll ditch trading for a PlayStation as planned and go back to Xbox, their consoles are far cheaper anyway. Welcome back anti-consumer, arrogant Sony, worked great for you last time didn’t it?. First you announce the utterly useless rich person toy that is the Portal then this dumb beyond belief move when Xbox is getting possibly one of the most anticipated titles in ages, but hey, your stock price is up so that’s really all that matters right?, gotta keep those greedy fat pig shareholders happy right, disgusting. Someone needs a mental health check. To those who, like me, are saying they’re done, please stick to your word, don’t just roll over and accept it.

    • Pretty much my mentality. I almost bought an Xbox just because, but I wanted to PlayStation 5. However, I had the opportunity to purchase one, and I chose not to. Between all the nonsense going out now, and with the PlayStation plus plans going up constantly and never something I need: multiplayer access and possibly save back up online. It’s not worth it. I’m not even playing anything online because there isn’t anything interesting. I’m not a COD or Battlefield player. And keep it there just in case something appears. I don’t even even download the free games because I don’t like them and I’m more of a buyer than a downloader. After the subscription ends I’m done. And I’m tired of the constant Sony over hyping their products, and then they don’t deliver it. They talked about the tempest as a big seller and for anybody that has surround sound like myself in the Living Room .. I thought it was gonna be phenomenal. They never release it, said it would be for future firmware, and here we a almost at the end of 2023 and it’s still beta and those that could use it. Waiting.

  • Been a member since the old days of Qore, and this finally made me quit, being in Canada the prices are going to be way too insane for me to justify paying for the subscription, this is similar to what Sony did with CrunchyRoll. They increased the price saying it because of the purchase of Funimation, if you want to increase the value of your products its not up to the consumer to cover the bill, I’m sure I’m not the only consistent paying customer you just lost, there is no way I’m paying close to $200 CAD for the second tier of PS+.

  • I unsubscribed as soon as I saw this mentioned on my news feed. Not only the disgusting price hike but not directly telling its customers its doing so is even more terrible. Rot in hell you disgusting corporations and managment.🤢🤮

  • Honestly it looks pretty good

    • I’m sorry for what Sony did to you to make you type out every agonizing character of that comment, but it’s okay. You’re safe here. Cancel, and BE FREEEE!

  • I have a friend who worked for PS customer service, and he’d tell me stories about how upset people were who called to find their card was automatically charged $60, whether it was someone who forgot to cancel, or some innocent grandma who let their kid use their credit card to buy the subscription and didn’t realize it was going to keep charging the card. He had one livid fellow who was upset at his card being automatically charged $120 due to the PS Now->PS Plus Premium changeover.

Imagine how upset people will be now when their cards are charged EIGHTY dollars and ONE-HUNDRED AND SIXTY dollars without their knowledge.

  • This honestly makes me really sad. This is why I turn the auto-renew feature off for PS Plus whenever I buy a subscription. With this massive price increase to essential (which is a $20 USD increase btw) I might not be able to afford to keep my subscription. This means I’ll have to stop using PS Plus and play single-player exclusively on PlayStation. I have some major changes coming in my life and I just can’t afford $80 yearly just to be able to play online and play a few mediocre games. So instead of getting $20 more out of me yearly you’re gonna get $60 less out of me yearly. I’m sure hundreds of others will end up doing the same, let’s do some math: if you have 1000 people paying $60 a year you’d be getting $60,000 per year. If 500 people cancel due to this price increase you’ll be getting $40,000 per year. A $20,000 loss yearly. If you instead lost only 300 subscribers that’s $56,000 per year, a $4,000 loss. Obviously, these are small numbers compared to the massive numbers you already have but there’s still a potential for massive losses due to this price hike. People are struggling these days and you might not just lose the subscribers of people who are angry, but also people who simply won’t be able to afford it. Not everybody has money that they can give away freely, people have to put food on the table and if the choice is between getting to eat tonight and being able to play a couple of video games online most people will choose to eat. Also, keep in mind that more affordable services exist, Steam lets you play online for free and Nintendo has a vastly more affordable subscription service. I have no idea about Microsoft because I don’t use their services but also keep in mind that they have Game Pass.

I hope this fails and you decide to drop your prices back down, I like having PS Plus but it’s not worth losing my house. Nobody believes the whole “continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.” especially when you add NOTHING NEW TO PS PLUS TO COMPENSATE FOR THE PRICE INCREASE! People aren’t as stupid as you think Sony Interactive Entertainment.

  • Since you’re raising the price on us, why not include some PSVR 2 games in the extra tier? As of now, I’m likely to just let the membership expire.

  • Just cancelled!

  • You know PlayStation you guys are BS me not only am I paying 60 bucks a year for your subscription that gives us games that are the worst on the market but then you are increasing the price of the subscription just so I can play game that I already paid on top of the 500 hundred I spent on your console already plus offline games and online games are 70 bucks which I can buy a great adventure season pass for that much and go every single day for the year and get discounts

  • Thanks for this month’s horrible selection along with the slap in the face with a ridiculously high price hike for PS+

  • Glad I’m finally forking up the money to buy a PC, if October’s lineup isn’t, I’ll personally send my PS4 back to the sweatshop it was made in so the children can scrap it for parts.

  • Well, I think that Sony is doing an awesome job, how much would it cost you if you were to buy all those games each month, I know some of them may not suit everyones tastes, but if you want a top of the line new game, that’s 120$, and that’s your PS+ membership right there. I have the catalogue, and I rarely buy games now I have it, so much to enjoy. Trying to keep everyone happy must be so hard, when everyone likes different games and everyone wants everything for cheap in this economic crises. Poor Sony, keep up with the awesome work 👍

    • People are not complaining about getting free games; everyone loves free games. What they are complaining about is the fact that the free games that are being offered have already been on a deep discount, free from another monthly free game offer, or a game that faded away soon after launch. I saw Detroit Become Human offered as a free monthly game at least TWICE, and that game goes on sale more often than you think.

Also to note, the price hike does not match with the quality or price free games or the game catalogue as it currently stands.

Sony cannot please everyone, but, the company could have kept the torches and pitchforks at bay if it had offered the upgrade(s) it is promising first. For example IF the free games were Hogwarts Legacy, It Takes Two and Elden Ring with free early/day one access to new games for the higher tiers, THEN the price hike would make more sense. Of course, some people would still complain, but the negative feedback would not be as much as it is now.

    • You’re Sony defense is lacking. You’re putting a hypothetical situation. What if you were to buy all those games each month? The vast majority of people are not downloading those games. So they have no use for it. There is a section of the gaming community within the Sony that do download games for free, but I’m not one of them and there’s tons of people who just want basic multiple access and may be back up safe file.

I’ve been a member all the way since they first started in 2013 I’ve only downloaded two games one which I purchased and the other one, paid for 15 minutes. You may wonder why? Because I buy the game that I want, I don’t want to try a bunch of free games and I’m probably not gonna like. There’s a section in the Sony community like myself that have been asking only multiplayer ONLY, no free game monthly, yet. Sony does an offer it. so essentially, I’m paying to support the free game monthly that I’m not using or take advantage of.

  • Tbh xbox gamepass is better

  • I have just cancelled my subscription, I wasn’t making much use out of it anyway but the recent free games have been pretty disappointing. Asking for more money whilst not offering anything else to justify it feels very scummy. Between this and the weird remote play device thing it certainly feels like sony are getting complacent at the top and taking customers for granted.

  • This is highway robbery. I’m cancelling my PS Plus entirely. Moving to Xbox.

  • Hey playstation tf happend to good games like I don’t know maybe hitman 3 would be great and whats with the price are y’all out of your dam minds who pays that much money for you crap.

  • Those do not match my monthly games for essential tier. I’m showing games I received in April 2023. Meet Your Maker, Sackboy, and Tails of Iron. This is.

  • Sony wake up!!! Amd listen to your community!!

  • Yay! Price hikes with two poorly rated games! Couldn’t ask for anything better! 😐

  • Just logged in to mention that I’ve also unsubscribed. It feels like a shameless money grab with no additional functionality or features, and to drop this at the bottom of a blog post seems like they didn’t want to let people know.

I’ll consider resubbing if we get a new tier for 20 bucks that’s just online play and cloud saves.

  • Subscribed to ps online services since its inception but have just cancelled. To raise the price without anything close to a valid explanation is not acceptable.
When you are not even offered day 1 releases the price can’t be justified.
Every single person I know in my family and close friends circuit have all cancelled their subscriptions too.. Until Sony actually are forthcoming and jsiyify the prices I’d rather swotch to GP and use the money saved from PS to play Starfield and Lies of P

  • To be honest… really think that some of the game they are putting on here( saints row) are being cut short of there abilities. When i see the free games for each month i look at them as a last attempt to get them moving in a more progressive future. The problem is some of these games are being down sized before they even get a chance to do something. Saints row could have been a game that could have flourished if the time and development would have been put into it. Hexk i would even put itbas a contender to GTA 5 but is cut short and stop-loss before it even had a chance. A good DLC or online mutiplayer events would keep pushing this game but is easier to move on from it then try to expand it. See it a lot with modern games. Anthem saints row, dying light 2, dead island 2 and monster hunter world, all games that could flourish if given the right content. Just my thoughts…..

  • Et tu, Sony? … Utterly disappointed from the games line-up and the “greedflation” price increase. I bought another yearly PS Plus Extra subscription at the current lower prices, but if things continue like in the last two months I’ll just have to by individual games or just sell the PS5 and go with Xbox . The really sad thing is that I’ve bought the PS5 in the beginning of this year just because of the better value… sooo disappointed.

  • Thanks for the games Volition. Saints Row were never my cup of tea but Red Faction 1500 hours minimum! Great game.
Maybe Sony should revaluate their business decision, you shoot yourself in the foot with a bazooka with that 30% increase. So goodbye multiplayers after the sub has looped around.

  • An over THIRTY PERCENT increase?? Have you lost your minds? Do you not follow the news and realize how much everyone is struggling economically lately? Plus was ALREADY a stretch and a hard sell for those choosing console gaming, but this has got me considering just selling off the new PS5 I just got, that I already had to save up months for, and finding a better platform that doesn’t proudly extort me to play online or backup saves. Y’all seriously need to get real with this nonsense.

  • Seeing a lot of people saying they’ll cancel their sub. Yeah, sure you will.

We all know every single one of you is going to re-up. What’s the point of announcing to a bunch of strangers that you’re leaving? Just leave.

It’s like announcing on a YouTube channel that you’re unsubscribing. Pointless. Just unsubscribe and move on.

Let’s wait and see if anything actually comes from this price increase. Not holding my breath, but stranger things have happened.

    • True, maybe some folks will end up renewing their services – there are many weak-willed consumers around the world who will take any abuse laying down. But what matters isn’t whether or not they actually cancel – we will all find out the truth of the matter by seeing how Sony is faring through their fiscal year earnings reports within the next few years. If enough people DO cancel, then it will start being reflected there as people’s subscriptions begin to run out.

The important thing about consumers “announcing” their departure is that they make it clear to corporations and companies WHY they are no longer supporting them. After all, from Sony’s point of view, all they see are the numbers. If it isn’t clear to them why their customers are leaving, they will make up their own reasons – “hey, our customers aren’t that interested in PS1 – PS3 era games on their PS5,” “hey, our customers no longer care about online multiplayer games,” “our customers don’t like supporting games from independent developers” etc. They will most likely blame it on anything besides their own decision-making and about their price hike. But if enough people spell it out for them, then they won’t be able to deny it. That’s the reason.

    • This is why my original post which states that “Q4 and 2024 will be interesting,” makes sense. Sure, some people will buy the yearly subscription before the price hike, but, what happens AFTER that will determine what Sony does next.

“Announcing” publicly about canceling a subscription gives more weight to the issue of a potential profit loss in the future and cannon fodder for investors. Feedback is important, whether it is positive or negative. I’m sure some people have posted their subscription cancellation on Playstation’s social media sites as well.

Notice that the price hike is happening “before” the holiday season shopping truly begins. Q4 is the time when businesses try to make as much money as possible before the end of the year. I can see this price hike negatively affecting end of year profits for Sony Playstation across the board.

2024 will see the beginning of the “lapse in yearly memberships” from players who only subscribed for one year. As you have put it, this will be the “wait and see” year. Will Sony have “valuable”changes in place to bring back those cancelled subscriptions, or will it be more of the status quo?

  • WOW Sony! people are going to switch to Xbox or PC..

  • Can we update the games now please? Still on august games…

  • Yo how come I’m not seeing new monthly free games on playstation plus is September 5th Tuesday 8:08am Texas tike which is centeral i believe. I’ve rest my constol 2 times and it’s still just showing PGA tour 2k23 deaths door and dreams like your post says it’ll be out on Tuesday September 5th until October 2nd I believe . So I guess my question is what time do they drop on playstation plus ?

  • I’ve been a subscriber to PS plus since before it was required to play online. It used to have value and was worth the money to me. This greedy behavior of hiking pricing by an insane amount is the last straw for me. $80 dollars a year isn’t worth it to me when I can play the two multiplayer games for free elsewhere. What happened to games being included that were actually decent and providing more value than simply gatekeeping multiplayer. The game catalog for extra only has several years old first party games and mostly mediocre Ubisoft releases from 5 years ago. If you want to compete with game pass, actually make an effort to. Give people day one releases and then we can talk. Until then, I will be enjoying all non PS exclusive games on PC. I hope yall can turn this ship around. I’d love to be able to turn my auto renew back on, but at some point, I have to let my wallet do the talking.

  • Yes, the price hike sucks, and yes, they are offering an ever-increasingly crappy service for more money… But the price hike hasn’t happened yet and recharges are stackable, so I don’t see the issue too much, as far as actually paying more goes. Just buy a couple years ahead of time.

As for the quality of the service amid a price hike… That’s a whole different conversation…

  • Massive subscription mark-up, again, and nothing but trashy bottom of the bin Plus titles?! Hell yeah, count me in!! /sarcasm

  • cancel ur ps plus

don’t buy or renew After september 6

    greed jim ryan

  • PlayStation is doing a good job they jack the prices up and they don’t add good games most of the time because they need to make money to keep the sever up and got to make newer consoles so stop complaining about what you don’t like and be happy that u have something to play

  • cancel ur ps plus guy
i already canceled my ps plus
we should take a against this greed company

  • Trash month with two D games and one F game just to sell add-on content from said garbage games plus the price increase just made sure that I 100% drop my ps plus essentials tier and go back to just the free mo they games and even then I’ll be taking maybe a 6 month break untill PlayStation realized the just lost tens of millions of dollars in subscriptions over this crap game offering month and obnoxious price increase…good job PlayStation

  • After downloading generation zero had to immediately delete it cause it wanted my to create a freaking apex account, it looked cool but if I knew I needed to make an account somewhere that, whatever happened to just download, play, and have fun, seriously sony either get your crap together and ask the fans what they want like put 3 polls on you titter(X) of top games and let us choose.

  • Hell no Rip PlayStation online 🤦🏽‍♂️
