New recommended retail price coming to select markets in the EMEA, APAC, and LATAM regions, plus Canada.
The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.
The new RRPs below are effective immediately unless otherwise noted.*
- Europe
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
- UK
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
- Japan (effective Sept. 15, 2022)
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥60,478 yen (including tax)
- PS5 Digital Edition – ¥49,478 yen (including tax)
- China
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥4,299 yuan
- PS5 Digital Edition – ¥3,499 yuan
- Australia
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $799.95
- PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $649.95
- Mexico
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – MXN $14,999
- PS5 Digital Edition – MXN $12,499
- Canada
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – CAD $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – CAD $519.99
While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business, our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come.
Thank you for your continued support.
*Select markets in EMEA, APAC, and LATAM not listed above may also receive price increases. Please check with your local retailer.
It says:
“Add a Comment
But don’t be a jerk!”
Bruh, you literally being a jerk by yourselves.
Agreed says global as reason but price increases are region specific silver lining could be if lawsuit passes £5billion uk consumers would get a refund but corruption everywhere so wont hold breath unfortunately dont know about other countries.
I am quite old, this is the first time in my memory of a console going up after a year…. Disappointing news.
I put off getting a PS5, looks like I’ll be putting off my purchase furthermore, as I don’t see the value just yet.
Are Sony letting Microsoft back into the game? I’ve heard they are reducing their offering in the coming months ready for holiday season.
It’s 2 years actually….
I can’t wait for Microsoft to make a Big-Move & lower the price on their Xbox. Im making the switch and will be going out of my way to make sure others do. I will spend extra money to help others make the change. This was a move and you are really showing your fear for Microsoft since the U.S. didn’t get touched. Making sure my house is Sony free honestly there isn’t anything that yall make that other companys don’t have.
Even though I live in the USA and have had my PS5 for a year and a half I do not like this decision at all. I can see maybe the all digital version go up a little that is it.
I wish you would explain more about this price increase. Anyway, I don’t think this decision is the right decision because the competitor of PlayStation has not increased the price of its product and I think that Sony has given the market to Xbox by doing this. I hope that this increase will not last long. And the prices will be normal again soon.
It’s the same thing with the games. Especially since others aren’t doing it, it only shows their greed and has a negative impact on the rest of the industry who might be persuaded to do the same.
This is NOT the way Jim.
Not to justify this, especially after the console has already released, but honestly I’m more OK with an increase in price on consoles than on games, since it’s a much less frequent cost. I had no issues with the PS3 costing so much, especially considering it had BC and free online. I’m much more opposed to games increasing in price, which of course you also did, because lower prices will get more people to buy games on release at full price. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, after all.
I get that it’s hard times for you as a company, but it’s hard times for your consumers too. It’s been nothing but bad news this generation, except maybe for PC, which has practically become your primary concern and is all you read about now when it comes to Playstation. Change the new leadership and get your act together, Xbox is ending on top again by simply watching you sink your own ship, and they only just started investing in first party exclusives. Wait until they beat you at your own game…
No ! Don’t do it. Okay… Do it then 😖
So….well…if I follow your reflection Dear Sony, that’s a GREAT NEWS for us who live in SWITZERLAND, this means that you will drop the price in this country due to the high level of the CHF and the low inflation here right????
So by how much will you DECREASE the price of the console in CHF?????
But…..wait…..why prices are going up here too???
Something sounds wrong Dear Sony!!!!!
PS: I bought all playstations models except PS1 and I clearly wanted to buy the PS5 since the beginning….but if you increase prices in Switzerland also, I will simply boycott PS5!!!
PS2 : GENTS, in the mean time, MICROSOFT is lowering the price of his Xbox Series S by 10%…..that said…
Hi
I think this a really bad look when all your customers are struggling with inflation too.
I do have a PS5 which I love but this is a really bad look. I hope Sony reconsiders their stance on this decision. Thanks
So not only is the ps5 still hard to get,but now they are more expensive. This is extremely anti-consumer. Way to keep your consumers in mind. 😡💔👎
PS5 = another PS3 disaster
😂🤣 omg I WISH. better check your pricing. The price for a PS5 in Canada, just the console, power cords and single controller BEFORE the price hike was $850. NOW it’s over a grand.
Greed at it’s best. None of their competitors are increasing their prices…
Got mine at launch. Sure not cool for new customers but it is what it is. As a business owner myself, I had to increase our rates. After TLOU, GOW, PSVR2 and so many awesome games, people will forget pretty quick about this price increase
Completely understand the situation. However this isn’t going to look good to the uneducated masses. Been waiting for this to happen for a year now. What I am surprised by is how we in the US are not also paying more. Our economy is in shambles and our president is about to make things even worse.
What I’d like to know is how the hardware refactor is going and if sony is going to establish new manufacturing channels to help get this down again. Sadly I don’t think we’ll hear about this due to profitability exceptions that need to be made when showing your hand.
not good
>price to increase in select markets due to global economic environment
>does not affect US
I wonder why the US is not affected, surely it has nothing to do with the fact that if they do that a lot of people would decide to move to Xbox. Really, that there are no regulated prices for each part of the world is stupid because in many countries consoles and games are charged at the same price of the United States, when it is really stupid. And they also increase the price in Japan, a place where not only PS doesn’t have the same power as before because they don’t care about JRPGs, but also the price increase of PS5 compromises the sales of FF7R and FF16, and on top of that, the price of PS5 games doesn’t help either, and a big part of the fanbase of these games is still on PS4. These two games are gonna flop and it will be (partly) PlayStation’s fault. It is already difficult to find a PS5 and now they charge more on top of that, I really hope you guys backtrack and return to the original prices (and fire Jim Ryan while you are at it).
I’m ok with this. I mean scalpers are still buying every ps5 and selling them up to 1k. I don’t have a ps5 because of that and they keep doing it because they keep selling them all very quick.. But that was ok but sony raises the price its awful
dont increase prices in india it is quite expensive in india a humble request
Even with inflation, this is utterly disrespectful to the customers.
I was super angry when I put up my earlier posts. I don’t want Sony to fail. I want them to do better by their customers and fans. They need to bring the price back down because it’s just wrong. It’s not fair and it shouldn’t happen. I’m sure Sony would make plenty through subscriptions, software, accessories etc. anyway so they shouldn’t need to do this. That’s how the console business normally works. They take a hit on the hardware and make money back through subs, software, accessories etc.
I don’t get it. I don’t get how you’re making the “hard decision” to increase the price of the console. Your reasoning is inflation is affecting people in an adverse way, so sure. The multi-billion dollar corporation who has made record profits since the release of the PS5 needs the extra money.
That’s not the real reason, the real reason is the CEO saw what the scalpers sold the console for, and wanted a bigger piece of the pie. This is gross.
This is one of the worst decisions yous could’ve made since the ps3s og price yous alredy sell most ps5s in a hfw bundle and now it’s gonna be €600 to get one cause bundles are only being restocked atm wft don’t
Wow. Jim, you are out of your mind and lost control. You’ve increased the game for $70, which PS3 original games retail was $50
And you have just increased $50 for PS5 was a dumb move so.
Please $0NY remove this Jim CEO and change your HQ Revert/Rollback to Tokyo, Japan, and solve the problem.
I can’t stand this anymore…
PS4 Pro will serve me for years to come. Graphically, it’s very difficult to justify a PS5, even at original prices.
Game of money
Nintendo, Steam and Microsoft have stated they are not increasing their prices… Soooo… is it to cover the 5billion legal bills? 😂😂
I am from the United States and do NOT agree with this. This is making me mad with Sony increasing prices.
HAHAHA perfect migrate to xbox ty….
Boooo. Sony is such a greedy pig.
Sure as if there isn’t inflation in the US. You don’t care about Europe and Japan and that’s the reason more PS5 are shipped to the US then everywhere else. I have waited for 2 years now and I will never ever buy the PS5 for €50 more. I hope everyone in Europe and Japan feels the same. See you maybe next generation depending on your attitude. Arrogance comes before the fall. XBox did it when introducing Xbox one and you are doing it with this generation.
Will play my PS4 until it dies. I still have enough games to play on that system. You are lucky I like Xbox even less then you. But you are on your way to change that. It already started by licensing Xbox/ switch controller for PlayStation. (Backbone One) it’s a clear indication that you have no understanding of PlayStation gamers. You get that when you are not a gamer yourself.
Jim Ryan gonna Jim Ryan I suppose.
PS5 price increase is literally SONY being GREEDY & not caring about customers/PlayStation community around the world! Price increase is done due to the following reasons;
1. Exclusives Underselling
Lack of exclusives and not selling well compared to last gen. PS4 had more better exclusives. Dormant franchises that need bringing back to life. Sony could have got The Getaway back and made that similar to Grand Theft Auto to show off the overhyped SSD. Gran Turismo was a failure for a highly know franchise and that didn’t do well. Remember PS5 exclusives are made for PS5 only but quickly changed to PS5 exclusives will also release on PS4 – I think this due to stock shortage and Sony couldn’t make money from PS5 exclusives and most of the PS5 were in the hands of scalpers. Those that paid scalpers price for the PS5 probably didn’t pay £70 for exclusives and maybe waiting on sales during holiday period?
2. £5bn Lawsuit
Recently just before announcement of PS5 price hike. Numerous articles popped up regarding a huge lawsuit of £5bn. Probably Sony knows they going to lose money so best way to recover that money = PS5 price hike and make excuse regarding inflation.
3. Rebranded PlayStation L aka Game Pass Contender
Sony don’t like Game Pass and recently have been exposed; paying devs extra not to release their games on Game Pass. Rebranded PlayStation Plus is just awful. Game Trials should not be a thing for top tier subscription package – It’s like paying for a Demo. Game Pass has hurt Sony or else they would have not rebranded PlayStation Plus. As a PlayStation 5 owner Plus is awful compared to Game Pass.
PS5 Reduced Manufacturing Costs
PS5 had a revision model in 2021 where heatsink (cooling) was reduced to save production costs per unit. So if the production costs were reduced why is there a price hike? PC components are perfectly fine and now GPU prices have gone back to normal (sort of) and reducing further. Same goes for 4K TV/Monitors heck even Steam Deck – Valve has even mentioned they are making more yet not price hike!
PS5 Revision CFI-1200A (2022)
Just today a new “revision” PS5 model has been spotted aka CFI-1200 series which has reduced weight – Sony again saving more on production costs. Here are the difference between the launch PS5 models;
Disc Variant
– CFI-1000A (Launch) – 4.5kg
– CFI-1100A (2021) 4.2kg
– CFI-1200A (2022) 3.9kg
Digital Variant
– CFI-1000B (Launch) – 3.9kg
– CFI-1100B (2021) 3.6kg
– CFI-1200B (2022) 3.4kg
Price Hike?
Sony are saving money on production costs with each revision yet here we are where people around the world are being treated like crap when living crisis is ongoing. PS5 is not essential like food, gas and electric so there isn’t a single reason why this price hike should be been announced in the first place. Pure greed by Sony.
Sony/PlayStation are clueless this generation. Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst (dude had his PS5 upside down) have to go! Biggest money to make is on multiplatform especially with multiplayer games such as Battle Royale/First Person Shooters filled with cosmetics, events, crossovers. Hermen Hulst should have pushed Killzone game for PS5 & PC focusing on campaign and heavily on multiplayer. That’s where you make ongoing money to keep business booming!
I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft announces a limited timed price cut during holiday season for Series S|X. Sony made it harder for people around the world to purchase PS5.
PS5 is PS3 Generation!
bro you just posted prince increase
you are going to lose customer!
Wow, Sony… you are slipping up at the most critical of times. And if this was Jim Ryan’s decision, which I think it may not be.. I am leaning that this was a Sony decision, not PS.
Pushing your Inflation propaganda is preposterous. Especially considering that this was one of PS best year ever, admitted that you were making a profit on the Disc edition and so on. Forget 2006 already? Xbox didn’t forget 2013…
Jim Ryan needs to be fired!
Have you just doomed playstation next gen console?
You don´t care about your customers or the playstation Brand.
Your game prices, consoles, lame playstation plus subscription, 10 usd upgrades, no real retrocompatibility, all BS
The only reason there is a price increase everywhere else except the US is that they are using us to finance the lower price in the US. The only market PlayStation is interested in. All the above mentioned reasons are cow manure.
I’m just going to be honest as someone who owns both a PS2 and PS4. I can honestly say that Jim Ryan needs to be removed as Ceo of Playstation. Hes a bad leader and hes hurting the company’s brand with consumers for the last 4 years. Here’s a list of all the mistakes hes made.
#1 Taxing every purchase made on the playstation store.
#2 Adding a report option for playstation parties because one user.
#3 Removing the communities option without having an option such as discord to replace it right away.
#4 Increasing the prices of 1st party games to $70 when $60 plus tax equals $66 so increasing it to $76 is damm near $80 for a single player game that can be beaten in 2 days
#5 Charging a $10 upgrade fee on PS4 games to use PS5 features that the console should be able to do automatically via backwards compadibility.
#6 Changing the PS5 UI and the PS4 party invite method making it a hassle to access modes and apps on the console compared to the PS4
#7 Removing the ability to purchase Tv shows and Movies on the playstation store when u can keep those features up its not that expensive.
#8 Increasing the price of the PS5 from $500-$550 when you’re coming off a pandemic that was the most profitable 2 years in gaming history even tho supply issues made it difficult to get a next gen console yet u cant take a $10 loss on PS5 consoles.
#9 PS plus Extra and PS plus premium not offering day 1 releases on ps exclusives for both console and PC. Also not allowing PS3 games to be downloaded onto both PS4-PS5
#10 Not allowing users to stack their PS plus essential subscription because you want consumers to upgrade to the more expensive tiers.
#11 Focusing on Live service games, Movies and Tv shows over prioritizing gaming like you did during the PS4 generation.
#12 Focusing on reselling ports of their exclusive games from previous generations for $70 even tho their focus should be on delivering new experiances not the last of us PS5 remastered and this is coming from a fan of that game view my profile thats proof enough.
#13 Trying to deny Third party games from coming to gamepass so more people will purchase them at your full price $70 aka Resident Evil 8 Village.
#14 not allowing the PS5 controller to be usable on the PS4. When we can plug it in our usb charger it will appear as an option to use in the settings connect but wont work. PS4 controllers however, work on the PS5 for PS4 games. It makes no sense u would make so much money selling controllers during this supply chain issues.
#15 Attempting to shut down the PS3 store and not repaying for the Licenses of games people purchased. If we’re heading into a digital era of gaming where u get 35% of every purchase we make make sure it lasts over each generation just like physical discs.
#16 Trying to sell DLC like Miles Morales as a full Triple A game for $60-$70 thats a $15 DLC like last of us left behind it adds nothing new to spiderman 2018.
#17 Gran Turismo 7 basically GT Sport but with a worse economy yet for its 25th anniversary you put microtransactions for cars that used to be $3 that now cost $100.
#18 Horizon Forbidden West releasing with bugs and framerate issues at launch yet you’re charging $70 for games because any less will ruin the quality 🤦🏽♂️
#19 Saying we believe in generations yet every game that u showed in PS5 event showcase ultimately became cross platform except Returnal and Rachet & Clank.
#20 Trying to stop Microsoft from Purchasing Activision because you dont want the Cod fanbase spending their money on your competitors platform. Even tho Playstation has the #1 marketshare in the gaming industry Microsoft if the acquisition goes through will be 4th.
You’re right Sony, the global economic environment is a challenge, consumers need to be smart, save where we can…buy used games!
Sony IS aware that the PS3 almost finished in 3rd place, and the 3DO flopped because of EXACTLY this, inflation and parts shortages be damned, right?
Especially when the PS5’s competition announced that they will NOT be raising the prices of their hardware at all?
Dont favor anyone if you are going to act like jackass Jim. Here goes my fanboy hat.. I was planning to update my sony camera setup but now im gladly selling all those sony cameras, sony lenses and other gear and switch to canon ;( and i am not going to buy sony cameras or lenses again. If you get happy with those NFT:s or other lootbox bs i will either switch to xbox or quit gaming.
People dont buy anything from sony for a while, or only buy used stuff!
And specially dont ever buy any digital playstation games online those are scam anyways, when the day comes those games are going to be deleted from playstation store like psp,ps3 titles and you are not going to get back your game or your money.
Jim, if you are going to screw me I at least expect you to take me out for dinner first. No PlayStation games or Hardware for me anymore until you stop your US favoritism. I am not financing your love child‘s low prices. I call out to everyone in the effected regions to stop buying any PlayStation products.
Been waiting for an update on backwards compatibility so I can play ps3 games on the ps5. Small hope they lose the lawsuit even though its highly likely they won’t. Xbox won this gen in my opinion. I hope things get better and they move into the regular trend of prices of consoles going down over time, its been 2 years.
The only advice right now is ‘either cough up over £450 (or a different price depending on where you live) or don’t buy it.’
I feel sorry for Japan tho.
I think its just better to buy a used ps4. Even though soon enough there will be no more new games available for the ps4, there are some coming out now like ragnarok and fifa 23.
Since the competition isn’t selling its machines with a higher price tag, at least give your clients more for their money. Such as:
Allowing PS4 and ps5 owners to manage their game collection via their PC or PlayStation app (also allow tags such as is in beta for PS5 on PS4 too). The process on the console itself is much too time consuming.
PS5
– On the Home Screen, allow jumping to the beginnin and the end of the row of icons with L2-R2 (as is done on PS4)
– FOLDERS!
– Improve the Game Library management (in addition to the above suggestion):
* Make it so we have the option to keeps our filters/sorting options instead of always having everything reset as soon as we leave this section
* Make is show ALL our PlayStation collection (from the PS3 era to PS5, with PSP and Vita too)
* Add PS1, PS2 & PS3 as platforms choices/filters even if the games are emulated on PS4/PS5 through PS+ (such as for Tekken on PS+ Premium)
* Give us the option to have a PS4 type interface (with themes) for our PS5 Home Screen, with a second row of icons, or at least a PS4 section FOR PS4 games that has
this interface
* Augment the number from the 5 permitted at the moment for the “Keep in Home” option
* Improve the Device link function. Mine often does not work even when turned on
PS+ Premium
– Give those who own old games (the disc version or, digitally, via PS Store or PS+) the authorization to play those games (using the emulators PS+ uses – or the streming version for PS3 games that are streamable) even if the were taken out of the games rotation on the various PS+ tiers. An even bigger bonus would be to allow us to download ou old save files via a memory card attachment like the one once sold on PS3.
New Zealand retailers have just started listing the new price and it is now $80 more than it was before (was $819NZD and is now $899NZD). For comparisons sake, this now makes the PS5 $100 more expensive than the Xbox Series X in New Zealand. That is just ridiculous.
It is even more ridiculous given that news broke around the same time that PS5 recently got another revision making it even more cheaper to produce than the last revision.
“For the Players”… more like “For the Shareholders”.
Get jim ryan outta the office NOW!!!
You expect us to pay for higher prices when you have no exclusives for your hardware anymore, what a shame sony what a shame
The thing is; no matter how much we say this sucks, no matter how how many people voice their concerns over Sony’s approach to this console generation, Sony simply don’t care. They aren’t listening to the players or their loyal fanbase. Jim Ryan and the PlayStation heads aren’t listening to the people that matter the most to them… Us.
All they are focusing on with the PS5 and PlayStation brand is profit. Plain and simple.
