PS5 price to increase in select markets due to global economic environment, including high inflation rates

New recommended retail price coming to select markets in the EMEA, APAC, and LATAM regions, plus Canada.

The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.

The new RRPs below are effective immediately unless otherwise noted.*

  • Europe
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
  • UK
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
  • Japan (effective Sept. 15, 2022)
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥60,478 yen (including tax)
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥49,478 yen (including tax)
  • China
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥4,299 yuan
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥3,499 yuan
  • Australia
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $799.95
    • PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $649.95
  • Mexico
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – MXN $14,999
    • PS5 Digital Edition – MXN $12,499
  • Canada
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – CAD $649.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – CAD $519.99

While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business, our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come.

Thank you for your continued support.

*Select markets in EMEA, APAC, and LATAM not listed above may also receive price increases. Please check with your local retailer.

  • Can afford billions on acquisitions though can’t you Jim I’m going with the Xbox when I can afford one at least they aren’t punishing gamers that haven’t been able to get their hands on a new console yet.

  • I’ve never been the earliest adopter, but if it hadn’t been for the terrible stock situation here in the UK I probably would’ve got around to buying a PS5 by now. Was just starting to warm up to the idea of scouting around again (and playing the stupid game of waiting for notifications of stock drops), and then along comes this price hike.

I’m definitely now going to wait. I’ve got a sizeable PS4 backlog, while properly transformative new-gen games are still few in number. The price will eventually start to drop again, or there’ll be some deals around, once a) stock is less of an issue and b) the second half of this generation rolls around with the focus on a Slim/Pro model.

Right now there’s also a very real possibility this becomes the first PS generation I end up skipping altogether.

Congrats to our fellow gamers in the States who’ve managed to dodge this bullet altogether.

  • I have one also and it’s just another corporate greed at its finest. Hey Mr. CEO, how about cutting your multimillion-dollar salary, can’t do that though might be considered a commoner, what a joke !!

    • Everything rises in inflation. I know the smooth brains think its some corporate conspiracy because you dont understand basic money theory. All the prices are going up. It has nothing to do with corporate greed and more to do with political stupidity and stupid pandemic policies.

  • The world is becoming crazy over time. 😳

  • Jim has and will continue to singlehandedly kill the playstation brand…

  • This doesn’t effect me, but the amount of poor company decisions and choices since Jim Ryan has become CEO in 2019 is astounding. PlayStation is a very different company now, and not for the better.

    Greedy pigs.

  • So let me understand this… first, your logistical incompetence didn’t even allow you to keep up with demand, forcing Playstation users like myself to wait 2 years for a chance to buy a PS5, assuming some despicable scalper hasn’t bought them all, but our reward now is to be charged more?!? How is this fair?

    • Erm…. There’s this thing called the news. Have it on in the background now and then…. Maybe you’d learn something.

  • In a time when ordinary people are struggling to put food on the table Sony, a multi billion dollar company do this to try their best to screw people. You’ve lost my support Sony completely. The pure greed of it. The PS4 is my last Playstation console. I’m finished with you Sony. You can stick your PS5. I will never buy it.

    • People struggling to put food on the table shouldn’t buy PS5s. If you dont like inflation stop voting for boomer half wits.

  • Can’t wait for Microsoft to lower their prices and buy another publisher. No one is going to pay this much for a GTA Online machine!

    Good job.

  • Interesting that the price of the PS5 is staying the same in the US. Is there more competition in the States between the Xbox and PS so that they need to keep the price the same at least for now?

  • I wonder if being taken to court in the UK for £5 billion is an extra issue on price hike. If any one wants to check Google Sony being sued in UK. They are after getting UK based playstation users £67 to £562 compensation for 6 years of extra charges that they say have happened. It may go no further and be thrown out but honestly I would love for it to happen and Sony lose.

    • Don’t believe that, that 5 billion thing is as good as dead, this is just surfing the crisis, that is real, to increase prices.
Can’t understand that when they break records after records of profits, the only excuse is greedy and that drives people away from the brand.

  • All you people on here defending Sony is exactly the reason why they did this.

    • There is no defending Sony. There is the obvious observation that in a world wide inflation crisis caused by short sighted politicians and their CV19 policies Sony is going to raise prices just like everyone else. Thats the reality.

The first prices that started rising were wages….was it all greed of common people getting better wages?

No – its inflation caused by a combination of low-IQ political moves because of irrational fear and trying to buy votes.

    • Fact’s the shilling is strong

    • You’re absolutely right, you know what, I reckon all the CEOs are just constantly on this website, making huge decisions by the minute based on our very words! Well done for solving the case!

  • Don’t forget to dip into your pockets after barely affording rent and food to make sure Sony can scrape by. We gotta look out for the small guys during one of the worst economic crisis’ in memory!

Here’s hoping this multi billion dollar company can survive!

  • This is what happens when Boomers shut the entire world down without thinking about the consequences and try to replace an economy with printing money. The US is still chasing inflation trying to give away money and spend it like the there is no tomorrow. The price of everything is going up. INFLATION BABY! Thanks stupid politicians.

  • They deleted my last comment.
I’m angry and disgusted with Sony and will never buy a PS5.
I won’t be supporting them anymore. I have to get through the backlog on my PS4 and then I’m finished with PlayStation. That’s my last Playstation. Any games I buy will be used physical so that Sony make no money from PS Store sales. The pure greed of these multi billion dollar rich companies. Sony have my hatred now and that’s all they’ll be getting from me from now on.

    • @jimbobb23
      I don’t vote. I don’t live in the US.
      I can’t stand politicians.
I also can’t stand people who stick up for a multi billion dollar company who are selling more consoles and games than ever before and decide out of pure greed to raise the price of a console that’s been out for 2 years and has sweet flip all exclusives anyway. I’m finished with Sony and I’m finished replying to trolls.

    • How can I delete your comment….

  • F this. I own one and was going to buy one more for my kids, and why does these pricehikes never effect the US. Stop milking the rest of the world.

  • Horrible, decision, hope you guys get a TON of backlash.

  • If this were about inflation prices and what not, as you asininely claim, then the US would be getting an increase too. The fact it’s not just shows what this is – you being whiny about currency exchanges to US not being high enough to keep your bottom line going. What a nonsensical PR blurb, pretending to be affected by something that really only bothers the poor and maybe middle class, in an attempt to justify a pretty heft increase on a freaking LUXURY item, that you can’t even manage to produce in proper quantities!!!!!!!!!

This is just going to enable more scalping of the consoles by hoarders in every single country but the US. This is ludicrous, outrageous, and frankly a spit in the face to every single person who has supported Sony over the years.

Personally, I hope your sales tank hardcore because of this and you’re forced to do some major damage control in a few weeks. Unlikely, because again – this is just going to encourage scalping so people will, unfortunately, buy your overpriced nonsense. But it would be nice to see karma swiftly and immediately hit you where the collective sun don’t shine.

    What a freaking joke.

  • What was the point of this?
Increasing the Price Drives Away Consumers into buying your product
Yea inflation sucks but come on this is greedy

  • Meanwhile, Microsoft response on Xbox Series price…

“In a statement to Windows Central, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that there are no plans to raise the price of the Xbox Series X or the Xbox Series S, reiterating that they will remain at their baseline RRPs”

  • I cancelled my PS Plus subscription this week (August 23, 2022).

Thank you for making the decision so easy, and reminding me about this time and time again.

As a big VR user I was going to buy PS VR2 on day one. But I think I’ll pass!

  • What is f is this?! Sony is getting more greedy every day. I already have a ps5 and am still offended, this is insane. I’m thinking on switching to xbox instead

  • If the PlayStation brand dies in the near future, this is the beginning of its downfall.

  • Came to see all the whiny crying babies complain about how they are being “slapped in the face” by a corporation whose main goal is to make a profit.

    Its always:

    Anti-consumer BLAH BLAH BLAH

Not a good look YADDA YADDA YADDA

Jim Ryan is destroying my world….etc etc etc…

As usual, the largest engagement on this Blog always is with the negativity….you people don’t deserve video games…⠀

    • @KnucklesX2

You are right. Maybe I am a fanboy. but at least I don’t cry like a baby every time Sony makes a move I don’t like.

Sure price increases of any kind are not what consumers want but they are not unheard of or illegal.

We need to temper our disappointment with some rational behaviour. 354 posts and counting on a price increase announcement is not rational

Anyway…they should have closed off commenting on this one for sure!!

    • Hey, I’m a fanboy too, but

      PlayStation 5 sales steady
In the April to June quarter, the Japanese conglomerate posted a three percent year-on-year rise in net profit to 218 billion yen, with sales up around two percent to 2.3 trillion yen.

Its not like they are loosing money, just not making “ALL” the money.

Inflation does not only affect companies, but your milk prices too.

    • @Orangesaurus

That’s right…It does affect milk price too. But nobody runs to the BIG MILK website and starts an angry tirade, calling the CEO names and saying that the new 4 gallon price a “slap in the face to all milk drinkers” (i mean maybe they do though…lol)

Grocery is where we should be angry and take to the streets French Revolution style. Not over some luxury item, we don’t need to survive.

In my country, Canada it’s a $20 increase to get a PS5. I’ve spent more on crappy Timmies in a week than that.

Others are right though. 2 years in we should be looking at a $100 price drop around the holiday season, not an increase. It’s just that I cannot abide this much pearl-clutching and belly aching

    • ***edit***

I meant 4 litres of milk, not 4 gallons…that would be a lot of milk

    • Of course it’s where people should be angry. I don’t disagree with that. My point is that yes, inflation is up for Sony, and so it is for everybody else. And sure, raising the price of a luxury item might be warrented , but trying to drive a narrative away from “investors want more money” when their bottom line is allready well in the billions just sits a little off with me.

    • To be honest, I just wanted to scream into the void a little without being rude or unfair, and your post seemed as a good as place as any. :)

    • also .. also . I live in Scandinavia. Milk prices are regulated by law so everybody can afford them for their kids regardless of their income.

Im not saying this should be the case for luxury items. Just fun fact ;)

    • @Orangesaurus

      I understand.

Chances that you are going to come back and read this today are very slim as these comments are 5 pages deep.

I just wanted to say that I hold no Ill will toward you for “screaming into the void” I have a tendency to be extra sarcastic in my posts and it creates some interesting responses.

People are right. This price increase is not at all what consumers need after spending so much more on food and fuel over the last year. Maybe I have become apathetic to it all or maybe I am just a pragmatist. But true corporate greed is not a small increase to a hobby, it’s taking a country’s water supply that is virtually free and completely drinkable from the tap, bottling it and then selling it at 1000% profit. Maybe it’s about creating a food culture based on cheap and easy ready-made foods that cause health issues and then charging people money for the privilege of being healed. Or maybe it’s utility companies increasing prices when people can barely afford a place to live or banks gouging you with high-interest rates so you can live the dream you can’t afford.

Or maybe it is just me…lol

  • 70$ games and now this? What are you doing?

  • Sony should start to think what is their target costumers, this crisis is affecting families not multi billionaire companies that continue to earn more and more.
Games at 80€ is a big no for me and now more 50€ on consoles would be a big no if i didn’t already own one.

  • Booooo!
Come over to PC my fellow gamers!

  • NO!

This is unacceptable, never in history of gaming or past crisis a console suffer a raise of price RRP, PlayStation and Jim Ryan, USA also suffer a crisis why in these terretory not raise the price?, why the customers must have to pay extra when the console no longer sold at a loss?

  • Are you for real right now?! I haven’t purchased a ps5 because it was always sold out and I was banking on the price drop after a few years and here u are making it even more expensive?! Screw you! Economic environment my ass!

  • IN MY PERSONAL OPINION

i dont care much the price as soon is an awesome device with great features and cool promotions…

but cmon sony!! make a PS5 PRO and Next gen handheld psportable, make ot awesome and people will pay for it

  • U know what would be funny? If Microsoft drops the price of the Xbox!

    • holy crap… I think Twitter/Youtube/Pushsquare and Playstation.Blog would cause an event horizon to form around Jim Ryans’s a**hole and the entire universe would be sucked right in.

  • Microsoft and Nintendo needs to drop their systems price by 50 dollars worldwide.

  • From their own books.

    “PlayStation 5 sales steady
In the April to June quarter, the Japanese conglomerate posted a three percent year-on-year rise in net profit to 218 billion yen, with sales up around two percent to 2.3 trillion yen.”

So yes, definitely. They do need to squeeze out some more money from their customers.

Im 40+ and have disposable income, but this just leaves a foul taste in my mouth.

  • My god Jim!! What are you thinking?! Lifelong PS guy here and this seems pretty bad. Do you want to lose to MS?

  • Don’t be shocked when they reveal PSVR2 is prices at $500 – $600. Lock that in. No way it’s cheaper than 500.

  • getting a xbox sadly!!!

  • I feel bad for the people who haven’t gotten a PS5 yet and now this price increase just makes it worse for them. I got lucky enough to get mine on launch day but hopefully this price doesn’t stay for long.

  • I own a PS5 and think this is rediculous. They didn’t raise the price in the USA because they know Americans would be furious and the market is too large. They have always screwed other regions. I know I wouldn’t buy one now out of the principle.

  • This is a really bad move.

  • Jim ryan as head of playstation if Microsoft go to take 2 & offer them 20 million for gta 6 & time exclusive playstation be in trouble my opinion can see them trying to do this

  • Jim ryan as head of playstation if Microsoft go to take 2 & offer them 20 million for gta 6 & time exclusive playstation be in trouble

  • Microsoft already announced they won’t increase the price of Xbox.
What a joke pathetic scammers, not only we have to pay 80€ ~79.80$ f Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst.

  • If you love PlayStation like I do, we need to stop buying their games and their hardware only then they will start to listen.

We all need to stop supporting them.

  • Although I’m in the U.S. and already own a PS5, this is still a highly disappointing announcement. This is not the Sony I knew as a kid, teenager or as a young adult. They have changed and became incredibly greedy.

  • As someone who has invested into 2 physical PlayStation 5 consoles this is alarming. By limiting consumers and turning them away the potential for games to be ported to PlayStation 5 become less and less, assuming that the price increase has a strong negative effect with the brand and the growing install base. Especially looking at Japan as you don’t cater to them, you’ve killed off pretty much every bit of identity PlayStation had in Japan, consolidated and moved to the West and no you’re increasing the price over there. What the hell gives?

It is almost like you want Xbox and Nintendo to dominate in all these other territories, all PlayStation will be left with are basic western games for basic western audiences. I know I hitting an extreme here but you’re 1st party games mean nothing to me and many others. The console thrives solely on its third party Japanese and Asia based games for us and once the install base and your business practices don’t align with that your games will dwindle and so will your loyal long time consumers.

  • A necessity? To keep investors happy? Gotta pay out those dividends. That’s the likely reason as your not increasing the US rrp not only due to it being the largest single market but it also contains your closest competitor.

  • At least this gives me good reason to never consider buying one for my kids, or myself. Thus ending the run of having a new playstation in the house.

Appreciate helping me out Sony, you’ve made this decision easy.

  • Really? I have yet to even SEE an actual PS5 in a store. They don’t even have empty spots where a PS5 box could go if one ever came into stock, and the price is going UP?

I’m done. I’ve already barely been able to locate anything worth buying for PS4 in the store after the atrocious redesign. I’m no longer even planning to get a PS5 any more. My PS5 savings are now going to go to a better monitor for the PC.

  • The prevalence of scalpers showed the PS5 was extremely underpriced at launch (the appropriate RRP is the lowest one that results in zero scalping). As far as I know, there’s not much scalping anymore, so it seems a strange time to increase price. Anyway, it’s good that NZ is spared.

I saw quite a few games at Gamescom that were not coming to last-gen systems, so that means we’re finally getting to a critical mass of owners where actually building current-gen games makes business sense. Bring it on! I hope these prices increases don’t hinder that progress significantly.

  • First Sony devalue the brand with the pc releases and there is not a reason to own a PlayStation, also the increase of the games to 80 It’s a big mistake and now Sony increase the PS5 I don’t know what to say for this generation It’s a big disappointment I miss the ps4 era because Sony then was communicating with the fans
