How Naughty Dog rebuilt The Last of Us Part I

Naughty Dog walks through visual and gameplay-related improvements in a new Features Video.

The Last of Us Part I on PS5 will feature a host of gameplay and presentation enhancements that will bring the game closer to its original vision, according to Co-President Neil Druckmann. You can learn more in a new video from developer Naughty Dog that dives into the game’s many updates and enhancements, with Creative Director Shaun Escayg and Game Director Matthew Gallant.

How Naughty Dog rebuilt The Last of Us Part I

While the Last of Us Part I can render Native 4K at targeted 30 FPS or dynamic 4K at targeted 60 FPS*, and features PS5 mainstays like DualSense wireless controller haptics, trigger effects, and 3D audio**, it’s clear that there’s a lot more going on here than a simple resolution and framerate bump, it’s a complete overhaul.

From the art direction to the character models, the entire game has been rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of a new generation of graphical capability, allowing this game to reach the visual fidelity that the studio aspired for when crafting this experience. The PS5’s powerful hardware drives a host of visual benefits, from denser physics with tons of bumpables and chipables (bullets can now rip apart concrete and environmental objects) and cinematics now transition seamlessly to gameplay. Motion matching technology means that character animations flow more convincingly, intuitively and realistically; all adding another layer of believability to characters and their interactions with the world. Further, AI upgrades mean that characters inhabit the world in a more authentic and realistic way, such as buddy characters navigating cover to avoid enemy NPC sightlines more authentically.

The enhancements are all in the name of increasing the game’s immersion, but the improvements don’t stop there. Naughty Dog worked with their community to integrate some fan requests, including a “permadeath” mode, a speedrun-focused mode, and a host of brand-new unlockable costumes for Joel and Ellie. The game also hosts 60-plus accessibility options, outpacing what the developer was able to offer with The Last of Us Part II, and includes a new Audio Description mode, ensuring that play is rewarding and inclusive for all.

The Last of Us Part I launches on PlayStation 5 September 2, 2022.

  • I have mixed feelings. One side of me is happy this exists. On the other I am confused. I want to play it but at the same time I wish ND had devoted all this time and effort into one or 2 different projects.

  • Jeez guys… can’t you read? Don’t be a jerk… 🙄
So first of all, everyone complaining about the price and calling it a cash grab, you could just (bear with me here) not buy it. Maybe the ones upset about pricing are the ones who would have bought it, but they feel entitled to it. You bought, for one, whatever “copy” of the game you bought at the time. If you weren’t interested in buying or playing Part I again, I don’t see why bickering is a thing. It appears to me that those that complain about price, just can’t afford it. And the faulty reasoning that “if we can afford a PS5 we can afford the game, we just know it’s gouging and won’t support it”. Well your just not paying attention to reality. I bought my PS5 because I had the money at that particular point in time. Now? No, I can’t afford a PS5. I’m out of work so I actually can’t afford much currently. Owning a PS5 is not indicative of being able to afford a PS5 game. Period. Dot. What-have-you.
Also I noticed a comment that said something to the effect of Noughty Dag spitting in the face of their fan base. That’s just ridiculous, no one at Noughty Dog OWES you anything. If you go buy a movie ticket, do you get unlimited views? Can you go back and watch that same move again at the theater for free, forever? When that movie is released do you get a free copy on blu-ray? Nope. You buy it again. So maybe your spitting in the face of devs who made one of the best games ever, which your only so passionate about and feel betrayed BECAUSE of the fact that they are indeed a great company. If they were incapable of making games that could move your soul, you wouldn’t be so moved now would you? Strange.
I’m quite happy about this “grafics upgrade” honestly. I enjoyed Part II but I’ll always go back and play TLOU. Always. So yes. Make it look better. I’ll buy it when I can afford it. And love it again. It’s a touching story. As was Part II. Say what you will about it.
And to whoever said that they don’t care about any characters in Part II, I’ll just say that, while at first I totally wanted to see Abby get what I thought she should of gotten (DOOM). By the end I realized it was that very mindset that drove her to kill Joel. Don’t you see? Your very rage at the game for taking a direction that “the fans didn’t want” or that “didn’t make sense for the story” is the same non understanding that drives rage. That drives revenge. That drives pain and suffering. That perpetuates the suffering…. hey speaking of The Suffering… that would be one game I’d like to see remade. Totally off topic right? Just saying. Anyone remember that one?
I digress. Anyway stop being intitled, stop being judgemental, and realize that gaming is first and foremost, a hobby. It’s also an expensive hobby. And then also realize that hobbies are supposed to be fun. So why are we fighting over fun? If you disagree with something, simply don’t support it. It’s easy. Especially if you didn’t actually want to get it until you seen the price then got mad and needed to rant about it, then play off like you don’t care. Even though you come here and comment. Because it doesn’t matter to you right? So then your wasting time to (passionately) comment on something you don’t care about. That makes no sense, but would explain the state of the world we live in. So I’m either completely wrong or very accurate. Which would still make me right in either case. I’m talking to anyone doing that. No one person specifically. Just generally speaking (texting?) to all.
Like the wall of text? I’ve stated my piece. Peace to all, and may your vengeful wrath subside and give way to compassion. Seriously. Look at what’s going on in real life. Be happy we can still play video games at all. Be happy there’s company’s that are making games. You all realize that we could be on the brink of WW3 and were squirming about a remake of a videogame… this is why we are controlled. Think about it. And maybe play TLOU, either part. Get yourself used to some of those concepts. The world may one day look identical. So enjoy the good times right now, while that’s something we can still do. You never know when the Abby-of-reality can/will come and smash the face of the world you (don’t) call Jackson. So don’t waste what precious time you have while things are still largely good, being ungrateful and upset about things that are made for fun and entertainment. If that’s to be scrutinized, you would never even want to survive in a world that even vaguely resembles TLOU. You wouldn’t. And you know it. Go. And be happy. For now, there’s no reason not to be.

  • I don’t know. I think Naughty Dog is really overselling this thing. The AI doesn’t look appreciably changed. And according various devs on Twitter, they couldn’t really change the gameplay because the existing level design would support it. I’m sorry, isn’t that the implication when you claim that you “rebuilt” the game? That would include “rebuilt” levels to support your “rebuilt” gameplay? I don’t get it.

So, we’ve got what looks to be an updated texture pack and some additional accessibility features. That’s all well and good, but as a new, full-priced release (sans multiplayer this time)…?

I genuinely don’t understand why this exists. Or should it exist, be a more reasonably priced update of sorts. Ultimately I can’t help but wonder, what is Naughty Dog really working on these days? Is this they best they have? It’s just not a good look for the studio, frankly.

  • can we get a update

  • pretty_skaters11

    Great info graphics. RPG performance

  • How many times am I going to have to buy this game? The original was great, then the remastered version was a nice visual update. This remake does look good and I do want to play it, but I’m definitely going to wait and get it in a sale for £20 or so, or maybe second-hand, for less. I’m definitely not paying full price again.

Still, for those who have never played either of the previous releases, where have you been? It’ll be a nice way to play one of the best PlayStation games for the first time.

    • Havent had a chance to play this game yet since my backlog is huge with every console! I bought the collector edition and never opened it.

I prefer to have the Firefly edition but SONY being Anti-Consumer thinks selling online only is a bright idea when its the most Anti consumer thing you can do to your fan/supporters.

Stores like Gamestops distribute so much for SONY over the years and this is how SONY repays their distribution partnerships by having a corrupt piece of crap PS Direct website selling Limited edition only there instead of IN STORE PHYSICAL ORDERS….

All suppliers that sell High demand items online only are not for the customers… Fans will SPITE SONY back if they want to play the Selfish Game.

  • Please RESTOCK FIREFLY EDITION

ALL COMPANIES THAT RELEASE LIMITED EDITIONS ONLINE ONLY SUUUUUUCK BAAAALLZ and the most SHAME should come to you!

IN STORE PRE ORDERS ARE KING…… Some allocations should’ve went to IN STORE GAMESTOP & BEST BUY! Give the brick stores love SONY!

SONY Sux for selling Limited Editions ONLINE ONLY…. FIRE YOUR MARKETING TEAM THAT releases limited editions online only ….

    THEY SUCK and are
ANTI-CONSUMER! GAMESTOP can do in STORE pre orders and SONY thinks Ps Direct website is a good way to sell their products when HACKER/Scalpers always have better software to bypass their
    ANTI-Consumer company!!!!

Sony Team selling Limited Editions online only guess what; YOOOU ALL SUUUUCK! Microsoft actually listens to fanbase more when a majority of fans complaints are the same and Sony flat out ignores the majority customers! SMH!

ONLINE ONLY IS THE WORST WAY TO SELL IN DEMAND ITEMS!
Spread the Allocations out you heartless souls only caring about yr wack money.

You can be better and still make good money!!!! DUUUUUUHHHHHHHH. They go to school to be ANTI-Consumer! Lol

  • Looks great! I hope gyro aim and gyro motion controls, in general, are really fleshed out this time. letting players get it really dialed in through the options and even having gyro always on as an option. Giving players the option to use both roll and yall together and allowing you to invert X and Y axis individually as the player needs. Horizon Forbidden West messed that part up hehe. I can’t even play shooters anymore without Gyro Aim. No gyro no buy. lol. But nonetheless this looks great!

  • Looks almost identical to the PS4 remaster. Definite bargin bin pre owned purchase for me. Same story, same mocap, same voice overs, and the same suckers lining up to day one purchase the same game with updated graphics 😂😂😂

  • I’m waiting for The Last of Us Part 1 for PS5 on 9 2 2022
