The Growing Future of The Last of Us

The latest on the upcoming online experience, The Last of Us on HBO, and The Last of Us Part I.

Whether you’re here following our Summer Games Fest announcements or just catching up on the latest news from the studio, we’re excited to share what’s in store for the future of The Last of Us. Many of you have expressed how strongly The Last of Us series resonates with you, and we’re humbled by the community’s outpouring of passion and excitement towards the series’ growing and evolving world and characters.

We’re happy to share that The Last of Us Part II has sold through more than 10 million copies globally, as of this Spring. Knowing the support we have, our studio continues to see exciting, new avenues to introduce curious audiences and galvanize fans. With those opportunities in mind, let’s talk about the immense future of The Last of Us.

Standalone Multiplayer

It’s no secret that many of you are not only drawn to The Last of Us’ stories but also the game’s original Factions multiplayer. Since The Last of Us Factions’ release almost a decade ago, dedicated players have been vocal about an expansion upon that offering.

However, we can finally announce that we’re creating something much larger than a mode. We’re thrilled to share a piece of concept art from our upcoming multiplayer experience, which is an extremely ambitious undertaking. We’re growing our studio significantly to ensure we build this full-scale, standalone game, with its massive scope and immense world, in a way that fans have come to expect from The Last of Us and Naughty Dog.

We aim to make our newest entry into multiplayer inviting to new players while still a thrilling challenge for more of our seasoned fans. There will be more news to come next year, and we cannot wait to introduce you to the team behind this new experience!

The Last of Us on HBO

From the onset, our original vision for The Last of Us’ story was cinematic and character driven, and HBO enthusiastically continued the spirit of that same vision to bring this story to TV screens worldwide. Helmed by Craig Mazin, Creator and Writer of Chernobyl, in tandem with Executive Producer Carolyn Strauss and Neil Druckmann, the incredible cast and crew strove to ensure a faithful retelling of the story and its intricately detailed world.

In the spirit of collaboration and authenticity, Neil has taken on the roles of Executive Producer and Writer and also directed a full episode. Bringing The Last of Us to life has been a deeply creative collaboration between our studio and HBO.

The worlds of video games and television continue to overlap as Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, Ellie and Joel’s in-game actors respectively, join the cast in major roles. We cannot wait to see them on-screen along with new and longtime fans of The Last of Us.

The Last of Us Part I

The Last of Us released almost a decade ago on the PlayStation 3 console, and it’s left an indelible mark on our studio. Joel and Ellie’s story continues to be powerfully evocative with players worldwide, and we’re humbled these characters continue to leave an impression.

With leaps in technology and hardware that allow us to push the limits of the visual fidelity and interactivity, we’re thrilled to announce this complete remake of The Last of Us, releasing September 2, 2022 for the PlayStation 5 console and in development for PC.

The Growing Future of The Last of Us

We’ve implemented modernized gameplay, improved controls, and expanded accessibility options in this single-player experience to allow even more individuals to enjoy the game. Effects, exploration, and combat have all been enhanced. Leveraging the PS5’s powerful hardware, we also implemented 3D Audio*, haptics, and adaptive triggers. Both returning fans and new players alike will have the opportunity to experience both The Last of Us Part I and its prequel story Left Behind in a whole new way.

For this rebuild, Neil has passed the directorial baton to Game Director Matthew Gallant and Creative Director Shaun Escayg to bring this project to life. Matthew joined our studio a decade ago to work on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. He rose to Lead Systems Designer on The Last of Us Part II and co-headed the charge for over 60 accessibility features. Shaun started as Lead Cinematic Animator on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Shaun would later go on to become the Creative Director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. With their deep creative and technical expertise with the series, they’re the perfect fit to helm this project, and you’ll be hearing even more about The Last of Us Part I from them soon.

  • Is this a Remake or a Remaster. Resident Evil 1 on PS1 > Resident Evil 1 on GameCube. Resident Evil 2/3 on PS1 > Resident Evil 2/3 on PS4 are all REMAKES. They look like COMPLETELY different games. TLoU on PS5 looks like the exact same same with slightly better graphics. No different than the Uncharted or Spiderman Remasters

  • Also when are we gonna get a last of us ps5 version?

  • I’ve read all the comments and I agree with both sides.
Reality is this isn’t a remake. Its a graphics upgrade and implementation of part 2s control scheme, with no multiplayer.

Which is fine but to charge full price for a game which has already had the leg/hard parts already done. The game/story and places aren’t changing, the modernised controls are already there with the second game. This could of all been done with a ps5 update paid patch.

You have to think that insomniac did a spiderman remaster changed quite a bit really and gave it away with a standalone half the price ps5 game in miles morales.

The other thing is that, the remastered ps4 pro version holds up graphics wise.

I just can’t be excited or a will to buy it until resale when I have the ps4 remaster on my ps5 already. Esp that factions isn’t bundled in with it. Or even the fact we could of had part 1 and 2 for full price. Part 2 would only need a graphic patch for 4k 60 and I’d have been more happier to spend my hard earned cash.

Its just a disappointment really. I’d rather of had a new ip and this was just a 20 to 30 upgrade.

Naughty dog are quite low these days on my radar compared to some other first party studio’s. Its either uncharted or last of us.
3 new games in the franchise is plenty to jump to a new ip and then maybe revisit afterwards.

    • Agree with you, if you own the remastered version then it should be a 10 – 15 dollar upgrade at MOST. This is just a pathetic cash grab. It actually borders on insulting

  • We do not need this. Honestly the remastered version looks just as good if not better because it reminds you of the time you played for 1st time on PS3. I’m not buying this. Such a money grab. To have fans buy the PS3 game, a remastered PS4 game and now a remake of the same game. Stop it. It’s insulting to fans. Maybe 5-7 years down the road, yeah sure, but not now. Smh

  • I already bought this game twice, the buck stops here. From what i’ve seen , I much prefer the original character models. Oddly enough , I find Joel’s voice doesn’t sound right even though the original voice actors were on board. Finally , as much as I liked the original game , I will never play it again as part 2 killed the story which makes playing part 1 a sad reminder of what comes next. As far as I’m concerned TLOU is dead , I never want to see it again. Well , that is my opinion , and if you don’t agree feel free to display your ignorance.

  • I will buy this again, but Jesus Christ Sony, this pricing is completely f#^#,g ridiculous

  • Should we expect a real next-gen graphics? Or is it going to be TLOU2-level graphics with improved resolution/frame rate?

  • PC remastered

  • Been around since PS1 and I agree as well. Bringing exclusives to PC and charging us more for them was the last draw for me, I was already pissed that they combined online costs with PS+ the previous generation. For starters, I stopped buying their games at launch for full price, which I always used to do just as a form of support.

And yeah.. Now that they ruined the encouraging prospect of exclusives on their platform, they’re also seemingly determined to ruin the winning formula of single-player…

  • Great news, excited. Please make a PS5 version of The Last of Us Part II.

  • I refuse to patronize Naughty Dog after the colossal failure and disappointment of TLOU 2!! Also the HBO show will probably be crap as well.

    • I think getting Pedro Pascal to play Joel is the wrong choice. I do like Pedro as an actor, but he won’t make a good Joel. Plus Pedro can’t grow a real Beard, so either he’s going to wear a fake beard Joel will have a tiny tash and Afew hairs on his chin in the HBO show.

I don’t understand why Sony can’t hire and upcoming new actor. I’d rather see a new face in a new show as the lead character.

  • I’m In love with this game❤️

  • Cheap remake cash grab like gta remaster stay far away

  • What a pathetic cash-grab and throwin it out to the pc beggars on top of it,Jesus how sad it is to see Sony in this greedy deplorable state…y’all have become trash…damn disappointment is a messed up feeling, nothing worse in this life than feeling contempt for someone/something you used to love/admire once.Honestly the only reason I still game is because I’m a slave to this industry cuz I’ve really been wanting to quit in these last years.

Curious about the new online for TLoU…loved the online of TLoU 1 and played the hell outta it,it’s simply one of the best online experiences ever made so am curious about how y’all can improve on that without messing it up…just don’t expect me to give any money for it,never supporting dirty dog ever again.

    • Oh yes forgot to say that is pathetic to uuh “remake” as y’all fancy like to call PS3 games, specially games with such good graphics like TLoU 1 this will be the most unnecessary remake ever.Remakes are for PS1 games where the graphics were horrible, even PS2 games feel unnecessary RE4 is bs too but really PS3 games?…the gen where graphics started to become real and games movie-like?…what a bs cash-grab.As if recyling TLoU 1 for PS4 wasn’t enough milking…guess that’s the new Sony hu?…sell out your games and recycle them as much as possible…wow y’all gotta a bright future ahead as another trashy gaming company that is.

  • The last of us remake is amazing !

  • purplish-badge82

hay sony your are killing playstation fan thay dont want ps4 game come to pc!they want forever for ps4 exculsive gae
you are the worst Ceo in playstation history
i think you should stop giving exculsive gmae for pc
please respect for playstation fan boy
if you not stop nintendo will be the exculsive king

  • I gave Sony my email to register for a chance to finally buy a retail price ps5 and now all I get is spam ads….fml.

  • Loved this game, characters & maps…But seems a waste of time & $$$ to remake again…. Why don’t they just make a Last of us Part 3?

  • Meh

  • Its cool that they’re adding the feedback, but why fix it if its not broke?

  • I won’t be giving Neil Druckman a cent after TLOU2 hard pass for me

  • First off let me say Thank You To Naughty Dog for all the great games and experiences that you all have provided for myself and so many others. As a long time fan I have owned every game I ever seen Naughty Dogs name on! On behalf of myself and many others that own multiple versions of your games I Gotta say. We should be offered an upgrade price and that price should reflect wether or it not it has the multiplayer at which point it should be about half $. You guys are great at what you do and we appreciate what you do! When you upgrade a game Remaster/Remake especially through Generational Cycles you have to upgrade the mechanics graphics/controls ext. to stay current with the times. I owned all the games since day 1 and I’m sure many others that read this have Again We appreciate what you do but Be fair to US!!!

  • This is a definite buy for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!… Can’t wait! Hoping to getting my PS5 before it’s release!!

  • Rereleasing the same game again and again, hardly looks any different. It’s just a cheap money grab

  • Super nice

  • This looks excellent but sadly £70 is too much for this so I’ll wait for a sale

  • spongequaviusiii

We as the community come together as one. We stand strong and uphold our decision.

We want skate 3 on the new ps plus

Get this trending so PlayStation listens

  • Not being a jerk or anything but this is completely unnecessary.

  • TLOU1 remade in TLOU2 tech. Dream come true. But nooooo here is playstation nation **** over 20 bucks. Utterly embarrassing.
Just don’t buy the game and ****.

  • i cant believe why Joel is in background ?

  • Ellie looks far to old. Old head on her 14 year old frame. You don’t need a Genius to tell you that.

Her original design was way better, she actually looks 14, but here she looks 30.

  • I stopped playing tlou 2 after I helped kill Joel. There should have been a way around that. I loved the first one, got the remaster for the 4. But after playing 2 to that point the game was lost for me. It’s too bad because it seemed like it could be better than the first. Oh well.

  • Less than 24 hours until PS no doubt loses their last remaining content that makes their console worth purchasing, which is ridiculous after all these generations. As the world economy transitions into interesting times with recessions and contractions of the gaming industry a possibility, people may finally wake up (depending how strong the denial is) and see that PS hardware and locking themselves into the ecosystem simply isn’t worth it anymore. Pandemic driven spending will slow down and the arrogance of PS (equivalent to the late PS2 and early PS3 days that you repeat now) will show you that abandoning investment in second and third party, focusing on PC development to the detriment of PS5 development, paid upgrade paths if they even exist in the first place, censorship, not caring about Japanese gaming anymore with closure of a great studio (I genuinely wonder if anyone even knows a specific game is a deal of the week at the moment or when the golden week sale was last advertised on the blog), incompetence to hold onto core synonymous games, and more will backfire. Persona and Yakuza get exclusive announcements and releases on a platform that don’t even buy these games, and freely on a subscription service that can be had for a dollar per three months. Wasn’t Persona “important to PlayStation”? Same with Yakuza? Final Fantasy, from a company you seemingly won’t acquire, will probably be next.

This is all happening while the economy could return to where it was with the PS3 early days. What do you even have going for you anymore? Seriously, you are closer to being completely irrelevant than where you were in the prime PS2/PS4 period.

    Replies are not monitored.

  • Don’t care what yall say. This is a REMASTER.

“But the combat will now be like TLOU part 2.”

You know part 1 and part 2 combat was 99% basically the same? Only major difference is they added dodge.

Same story, same cutscenes, most likely same voiced lines.

Also if your a PS+ member with PS5 you can get TLOU Remastered for free so who would pay $70 for this?

  • At least the tacked-on multiplayer mode is a seperate game this time, let’s see how it does on its own. Do most people really look at The Last of Us and think “Oh yeah, what that series really needs is team deathmatch” The single-player narrative is what the series is known for, the fact that the tacked-on multiplayer is being stripped out in the PS5 remake of the first game says it all, and almost nobody is complaining. Remember the first game came out in 2013, when traditionally single-player franchises and developers were under huge pressure to include multiplayer modes in their games, in the (incorrect) hope that they could boost sales by appealing to the multiplayer crowd. That clearly didn’t pan out, when games like Resident Evil 7, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Batman: Arkham Knight, The Last of Us: Part II and God of War 2018 among others have all gone back to being single-player only after a previous entry attempted multiplayer/co-op.

A developer who worked on Condemned 2 even said in an interview the single-player could have been better than it was, if the publisher hadn’t made them divert time and resources to a tacked-on multiplayer mode that nobody was asking for in that series. Not every game needs to be everything for everyone.

I know this is out of the topic but will console only players be an option in the future of online multiplayer. Pc player ruined the game for console players. Example warzone. Put pc player to play with pc players and Xbox players with ps4 and ps5 players please and thank you. I don’t want to be rude or mean.
