UPDATE: All-new PlayStation Plus launches in June with 700+ games and more value than ever

PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now come together; players can choose from three flexible options.

Update: We’re making fantastic progress with our launch efforts and I wanted to update you on the latest. We’re rolling out our new offering for PlayStation Plus a little earlier in select markets in Asia, followed by Japan. Here is a look at our updated regional rollout schedule.

  • Asia markets (excluding Japan) – targeting May 23, 2022 (May 24, 2022 in local time zone)
  • Japan – targeting June 1, 2022 (June 2, 2022 in local time zone)
  • Americas – targeting June 13, 2022
  • Europe, Australia, New Zealand – targeting June 22, 2022 (June 23, 2022 in local time zone)

Additionally, we’re also expanding our cloud streaming access to the following locations for a total of 30 markets with cloud streaming access**. The following markets will also offer the Premium tier from PlayStation Plus at launch: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

We’ve been working on this massive global effort to provide flexible options, quality games and greater value for our members for quite some time now – and we’re just a few weeks away from our first regional rollout. We want to thank our PlayStation community for the ongoing support, and we’ll have more to share as we get closer to launch. Since launching PlayStation Plus in 2010, SIE has been at the forefront of innovation with game subscription services. We were thrilled to be the first console membership service that included a refreshed library of games through PlayStation Plus, and also launched the first console game streaming service with PlayStation Now.

Today, we are pleased to share with you official news about changes coming to our subscription services. This June, we’re bringing together PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now in an all-new PlayStation Plus subscription service that provides more choice to customers across three membership tiers globally.

Benefits from Essential and Extra tiers are also included. Local pricing will vary by market.

The new Extra and Premium tiers represent a major evolution for PlayStation Plus. With these tiers, our key focus is to ensure that the hundreds of games we offer will include the best quality content that sets us apart. At launch, we plan to include titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal. We’re working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed. More details to come on the games we’ll have on our new PlayStation Plus service.

When the new PlayStation Plus service launches, PlayStation Now will transition into the new PlayStation Plus offering and will no longer be available as a standalone service. PlayStation Now customers will migrate over to PlayStation Plus Premium with no increase to their current subscription fees at launch.

As this is a massive launch effort, we’re rolling out the new PlayStation Plus offering in a phased regional approach. In the June timeframe, we’ll begin with an initial launch in several markets in Asia, followed by North America, Europe and the rest of the world where PlayStation Plus is offered. We aim to have most PlayStation Network territories live with our new PlayStation Plus game subscription service by the end of the first half of 2022. We also plan to expand our cloud streaming benefit to additional markets, and will provide more details at a later date.

Building upon more than 25 years of expertise in gaming innovation, this change to our subscription services highlights our continued efforts to evolve our network services business to match our customer’s preferences. With the all-new PlayStation Plus, we’re focused on delivering a compelling game subscription service with curated content from our exclusive PlayStation Studios team and our third-party partners. The newly enhanced PlayStation Plus will enable our fans to discover and engage with more content than ever before, and deepen their connection with the PlayStation community through shared experiences.

We’re providing an early look at our new PlayStation Plus subscription service today, and we’ll plan to share more information with you as we get closer to launch. Stay tuned.

  • Would be nice if the PS1/PS2/PSP games could be purchased and downloaded separately from the subscription, too. Even if the ability to purchase comes sometime after the title is added to the subscription.

$120 a year is really pricey to get access to those retro games. But if the library is expansive and includes PS1/PS2 games that are excruciatingly expensive on the secondhand market (ex. Thousand Arms, Lunar 1 & 2, Valkyrie Profile, Gitaroo Man, etc.) then it would be worth the price.

  • The PS Plus Essential tier is the same as we’ve known for years past; it’ll include all those same benefits like one PS5 and two PS4 titles each month as well as access to online multiplayer. Your current PS Plus membership will be automatically converted into a PS Plus Essential one in June. Then you can choose to upgrade to the higher tiers. PS Plus Essential includes: <<<< THIS

  • Awesome news! For current ps+ members, is there any prorated discount if we choose to upgrade to any of the higher tiers? Or ability to rollover time to higher tier?

    • I want to know the same!
But it looks like there isn’t. If we move to a higher tier, they take the money we pre-paid and tell us to go f*** ourselves.

  • The question I have is if the PS1, PS2, and the PSP games will have trophy support with Platinum trophies or not? I still own the original copies of all of the games on those consoles that I would ever care to play. So unless they come with trophy support there will be no reason for the upgraded subscriptions

    • Additionally. The only subscription service that I would sign up for would be only for the old games. I don’t care about any of the benefits currently offered for PS Plus or Ps now. There needs to be a separate tier for people who don’t care in the slightest about the free PS4&5 games, playing online, or streaming modern games. I have no interest in any of that. I refuse to pay any more than I do for internet access and will not at any point tolerate streaming of current or recent Gen games

  • This is great news. I’ll be upgrading to Premium immediately. If you already have Plus and Now, it’s kinda just like “why not?” if it’s the same price overall. (yearly)

  • I really wish they would make cloud saves completely automatic like they are on the Xbox and Steam. With the Xbox, I can save my game and it’s instantly stored in the cloud, then I can go upstairs and resume my game at exactly the same point on my other Xbox. It downloads the cloud save automatically without requiring any action on my part, and this service is completely FREE with both Xbox and Steam, even if you only have Xbox Live Silver.

With the Playstation, first you have to have a paid subscription to PS+, then you save your game, then you have to exit the game and go to the dashboard, then you have to manually locate and upload your save to the cloud, then go to your other Playstation, manually locate and download the save, then after all that you can finally start the game and pick up where you left off. This also introduces the possibility of user error, where you could accidentally overwrite the wrong save and lose progress. It’s a very cumbersome system overall. It’s also the reason I’m only buying exclusives on my PS5, and playing everything else on the Xbox.

  • The fact that there are fully functioning EMU’s out there for the PS1,2,3 running on hardware with lower specs than the PS5 is highly disappointing. Why is STREAMING pushed so hard when they know the consumer isn’t asking for it. Why isn’t the option to pop in an old disc and the server sees my ownership of disc an option to play the old game if compatible? Last what’s the upgrade option for the current PS Plus members who’s memberships are nowhere near expirations?

    • Sony bought a streaming company years ago. So they probably want everyone to use it as much as possible.

  • If that selection of PS2 games includes Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Legendia, and Dragon Quest VIII, I’m instantly sold on day 1. I never got the chance to play those back in the PS2 days.

  • I wish Sony would just remove Cloud streaming. It’s a waste of everyone’s time. No one wants to stream a game when they obviously have the network connection to download it. I have a fiber connection and couldn’t get past the first level of any game due to the lag. Even a half second lag makes the game unplayable. It’s a horrible experience. If you can’t figure out how to emulate PS3 games on newer hardware, then don’t offer those games. Cloud streaming is not the solution.

  • I have a playstation subscription that runs for the next 3 or 5 years, can’t remember. Anyway can I substitute that subscription for one of the others?

    • No… If you have PS Plus, it will automatically switch to the lower tier and if you want to get a higher tier, you lose all the money you pre-paid.

  • Many keep asking what happens when the new service starts to my current subscription. You get upgraded to premium for the remainder of your subscription at no additional cost. IMO. Buy a 1or2 year ps plus subscription and be able to use and experience the premium version free for a year or more!

  • I’m intrigued about the last tier . If I can’t download the ps2 and psp and ps1 games I own already on the playstation store without this tier I’m going to attack you in a court .

  • Why are you all so committed to cloud streaming? It’s only as good as your internet connection. I was excited thinking you all were finally going to compete with Game Pass, and yet here we are, still having to worry about cloud streaming. And at exorbitant prices too. No thank you.

  • This is just a rip off of game pass ultimate but you pay twice as much it’s not even worth it why should I pay between 100-$120 for the same thing I get for 59.99? Y’all’s customer service is better than Microsoft but your deal changes suck

  • I really hope that games that were available on PS3 such as Black Ops II are available to play…

  • What is the plan for those who have both subscriptions with one good a few months longer than the other? I have Now till June and Plus till Jan

    • Just gonna assume you will have ps plus ultimate until June. And then essential until January. There may or may not be upgrade options.

  • When can I stream these games to my Mac?

Any plans for browser based streaming?

  • Hey SONY – something is wrong !!!

(…) ==> Two monthly no changes <== for existing PlayStation Plus members in this tier.

Up to now there are 3+ (say:three or more) downloadable games. Something is wrong !!!

  • There are a couple of thing you guys need to drop and forget because they will never happen:

    1) Day 1 Playstation Studio titles. It has been proven beyond doubt that it’s impossible to sustain a business model with $100+ million AAA budgets with a subscription service (unless the service costs three times and has hundreds of millions of subscribers), it’s not feasible. The current model of SIE focuses on high profile titles that demand heavy money invested and more than 10-15 million copies sold at full price or near full price (price drop after launch), to recoup the investment and make a healthy profit to re-invest in more titles. This cycle will be broken with any subscription model because of its volatility and market fluctuation. A business model that makes this cycle impossible unless you dramatically drop the quality of these big budget games to reduce cost. The result would be AA class games that is the majority of Game Pass’ Day 1 offerings.

    2) PS3 native or emulated code running on PS4 and PS5. Regardless of the extra power of the PS5, even emulating CELL developed games is a tragic technical impossibility. Third party and independent teams have failed in doing so (RPCS3), with mild success on a game by game basis and it still requires bleeding edge hardware in the x86 real to achieve respectable stability. On the console leve it’s impossible. The CELL processor was difficult to develop on. Emulating it becomes a greater challenge than simply recoding and recompiling the original code for a different architecture including remastering the assets.

Be real and look it up, don’t take my word.

Oh and I want to upgrade to PS Plus Extra, Sony. Please.

    • My computer is 11 years old, dude, playing RPCS3.

The new consoles are MORE than enough to be playing the emulated PS3 games. What Year is your comment from?

    • RPCS3 is not perfect. There is a lot of work to optimize with each title. Sony does not want that baggage and cost. Bottom line, it will never happen. PS5 may have the juice to do it. PS4? with that weak CPU? Impossible.

  • So, did no one see that the PS Plus Essential will be “Two monthly downloadable games” instead of three ? They scrap one free game each month for the same price…

    • This is how they’re getting us. Hell they’ve *SOLD* (not given) us more than that in recent times. They manipulate what they say to create a lie and will also say they didn’t lie.

Now we just see when it really does get cut down to just 2 monthly for the base tier.

and charging to access multiplayer is bs.

  • I have PlayStation now and PlayStation plus with over a year to run on each. What happens in my case.

    • We’ll be transfered to the lowest tier automatically. But I want to upgrade to Premium and want to know how I can do that. Will I be refunded for the PS Plus I have left on my account?

    • I assume you’ll have those 2 combined. Possibly ps plus premium.

  • Thank You Jim 😍😍😍
    It is Amazing 🔥🔥🔥
I hope it will expand further in the future.

  • I’m happy about this

  • What are the 400 games we get?

  • I was really expected to download PS3 game to play. Very disappointed.

  • Will this actually be adding on to the existing PSNow offering because there seems to be more than 340 PS3 titles alone available on PSNOW.
ALSO I REPEAT PLEASE KEEP DEMANDING FOR THESE CLASSIC GAMES TO BE AVAILABLE FOR INDIVIDUAL PURCHASE ON PSN SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES ARE BAD AND NEED AN ALTERNATIVE!!!

  • But can we play the PS1/PS2/PSP games we already own on PSN? Or even better, the PS1/PS2 discs we own? Obviously I can’t expect UMDs since the drive won’t take those

  • Sounds cool, I’ll check it out!

  • Looking forward to the new subscription service! Wonder if the PS1, PS2 and psp games will have trophy support 🏆

    • lol Only the ones (PS2 games) that got remastered for PS3.

Sony doesn’t actually care about providing classic games.

  • Will I still be able to purchase games digitally with an essentials subscription?

  • How absolutely terrible make online services free like pc and just have different tiers for people who want it this is basically useless in Australia and twice as expensive how did this get through the test phase or do you all just not care anymore

    • Why is it twice as expensive? If it’s just online you want, its still the same price. They said there’s no changes to the first tier. Other than 1 less game.

  • Why not native PS3 games? Are you actually using PS3 hardware (in 2022) in those servers to make those games available over streaming? That’s just wild.

  • Good decision dropping the PlayStation Now name and keeping PlayStation Plus.

  • Yeah no it shouldn’t cost 120 dollars a year to play old playstation games. Idk why people are praising this lol

  • PS3 games being only on cloud is super disappointing… I have PS Now and it not viable for me to stream the games from where I live. Something I don’t like as well is that we might not be able to subscribe to ps now for a month after this, because not every month is a good one and I don’t want to pay for it if I’m not going to use it that month.

  • Looking forward to playing the Playstation 2 versions of both Viewtiful Joe and Onimusha on my PS5. Please tell me that these games are available @Sony

  • So, you guys are telling me, that I can’t access my digital Ps3 collection that I’ve already paid for on the PS4, but you can lease me the same games on the PS4. Just to clarify, that’s what you’re telling me right?

You’re combining Plus with Now, and having the consumer pay the difference? Where exactly is the value in this?

  • WOW REALLY!?!? Microsoft has been doing this for years. So revolutionary Sony. Oh and all you fan boys enjoy that for twice the price. Insane the greed. For all you haters, one word, CRUNCHYROLL

  • I guess I should also add HUGELY HUGELY LET DOWN AND DISAPPOINTED by no effort to bring PS3 games forward in a manner that isn’t streaming, streaming will never be the same as natively playing the games and Sony needs to do more for classic games.

  • pretty stupid pricing themselves out. game pass is a way better deal and is cheaper. sad as i was looking forward to them actually competing with microsoft, but they got greedy.

  • The fact that PS3 games can’t be downloaded and played locally on my PS5 gives me no reason to subscribe to this new service. I’m fine with my current PS Plus subscription.

  • If I can’t stream/play Legend of Dragoon, I’m rioting.

Old school NFS would be nice too

  • Gonna continue leaving messages so at least someone is asking FOR AN ALTERNATIVE OF PURCHASING THESE CLASSIC GAMES INDIVIDUALLY SINCE I ALREADY DISLIKE PAYING FOR PS+ TO ACCESS IT’S STANDARD FEATURES AND IN NO WAY DO I WANT TO PAY MORE FOR IT JUST TO GET TO TEMPORARILY DOWNLOAD CLASSIC GAMES AS LONG AS I PAY UP!!!

    • If you want to own classic games you should check if your area has a retro store I found some great games at my local store and for a decent price

  • I think this is a great idea and reasonably priced. I especially like the idea of game demos, It’s a use tool for giving you a better understanding of a games potential. I plan to start with the premium package.

  • It’s for Saudi Arabia region? ):

  • Can they some how bring back EQOA: Frontiers from PS2?

  • I’ve been with Playstation since the beginning. This is exciting and I can’t wait! Let me go ahead and get PlayStation Plus Premium for my PS5 please :)

  • It Should Be Illegal To Now Be Cutting PS+ Games Down To 2 A Month And Say “””Nothing Is Changing”””, no matter how you’ve intentionally Spun it. It Is Still Manipulation, Lies, and BS.

It Should Also Be Illegal To Force Us To Pay An Extra Arbitrary BS Added Fee To Access Multiplayer For Most Games. [redundancy intentional]

on top of that I bet you’re almost never going to add more classic games than the few you’ve ever had on previous system stores. Are you even Not going to let downloadable ones be purchased without a Subscription?

  • Include PS Vita! Please!?

  • Im on current basic membership subscription for per year. So will continue with my streaming live game. Will impact me?
