PS5 and PS4 System Software Updates release globally today

Variable Refresh Rate support is coming to PS5 in the months ahead.

Our next PS5 and PS4 system software updates are rolling out globally today, so we wanted to provide a quick look at some of the new features. We’re also glad to share new details on Variable Refresh Rate for PS5 on HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, which is planned to release in the months ahead.

New features for PS5 and PS4

Thanks to support from our beta participants, we’re introducing some fan-requested features to our global community today, like the ability to create or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles. On PS5, we’re also bringing UI enhancements to Game Base and Trophy cards, as well as accessibility features like mono audio for headphones.

You can read more about these system update features here.

For a refresher on PS5 features like how to apply game presets on your console, pin videos and apps to your screen while you play, or share your screen with friends, check out the new “Pro Tips” cards in the Control Center.

PS App and PS Remote Play enhancements

Starting later today, we’re gradually rolling out the ability for PS App users to create or join Open and Closed Parties through the app as well. We’ve also updated the PS App Game Base UI to make it easier to access the Friends, Parties and messaging features, delivering a consistent player experience with PS5.

PS Remote Play mobile app users can enjoy a new “dark mode” based on their phone setting and choose from new Screen Reader languages for both iOS and Android, including Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Greek, Thai and Chinese (traditional and simplified).

On the horizon: Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5

We’re also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Both VRR and this secondary option can be turned on or off.

Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using and game you’re playing. As we get closer to the feature’s release, we’ll share more details, including some of the games that will enable VRR support through a game patch.

Our teams will continue to work hard on ways to enhance your gaming and social experiences on PlayStation, so stay tuned for more updates!

  • I miss the ability to see download file size and progress. It only shows estimated time now.

  • Me and my friend PS5 automatically updated and now are controllers wont connect we did all the **** to try to fix even called tech support and have it wired connected but that stop working. Been waiting everyday since the update to play it. you think this would be a easy patch but seeing that the only online article talking about this is no longer there. this **** is embarrassing I’ve been a PlayStation user since the PS1. hope someone at PlayStation dose something seeing that I’m not the only one

  • I demand more folders formy ps4

  • Talking with a lot of people, this update resulted in breaking a lot of peoples systems. We cannot connect to wifi, and it destroys the bluetooth connection to the controller making it unusable. Tried for hours with playstation support multiple times and they agreed, all I can do is wait for the next update. Almost every game these days needs internet connection to work, and I had to try doing a factory reset, so I can’t even redownload my games. The PS5 is basically unplayable right now. The worst part is that Sony won’t address the issue, so we have no idea if they even intend to fix it, much less when.

  • after update with new release I have problems with my controllers and with wifi, someone know whats a matter?

  • Why don’t you guys make an actual good upgrade? Like the Social media section/What’s New, where we can post comments, pictures, videos, and like other peoples stuff…tell you what it’s the main reason I haven’t bought one. Not to mention themes and wallpapers…🤦‍♂️…come on you guys aren’t that dense…are you?…

  • PlayStation:
While I have 4 previous PS machines – the PS 5 is only available through hugely inflated prices / scalpers.. REALLY ??
I’ve only used the PlayStation platform – but this overpricing BS is making me look at the X people (THEY ARE AVAILABLE) .. what a horror .. lol
sell the damn machines at a reasonable price – even (or best) if it’s through PlayStation (that will END the scalping— – don’t appreciate being manipulated for $$$$ ..

  • Well, here I sit with the PlayStation not working. You have to reboot to get the controller to work. Then, it refuses to connect to the PlayStation network. Support says it was an issue with the March 23 software release with the controller which I believe because that’s exactly when it stopped working. More than a week on, any solutions?

  • very good PS greetings to the phaser HWDP-Play is ok

  • if you have problem with controller connection (it is disconnected after a few min) then try it without wifi and use net cable. I am reset 3. time and now WITHOU WIFI. Use only net cable. ps5 have been working 2 days to me

  • I don’t know how but my ps4 just doesn’t work at all with the new update. If I reset it back to an earlier update everything works except online, but if I update it to 9.50 the whole thing is soft locked in a startup loop

  • After messing around with lots of recabling and power-cycles I reported a surround sound issue today to Sony support that occurred with a recent PS5 firmware update (unsure if it was in the 22.01-05.00.00.40 firmware exactly).
Surround sound works in the Home menu and in games, but it now gets disabled when Dolby TrueHD engages within the Bluray/BlurayHD player!
Using a Sony Playstation 5 with Samsung QN90AA55 (via HDMI 2.1 input) and Onkyo TX-SR252 AV receiver (via ARC).
Dolby bitstream set as the preferred solution on all devices, and Bitstream is selected in both the Playstation settings and the “…” settings within the bluray player.
The Playstation is also set to treat the HDMI 2.1 input on the television as an 5.1ch AV Receiver because that is what worked before and still works for games.

    Technical details:
PS4 (and other devices) work when connected to the TV utilising ARC for audio and when connected directly to the receiver.
PS5 works when connected directly to the receiver, but reverts to Stereo PCM when playing Blurays and BlurayHDs with the player through the TV and ARC.
For some reason Dolby Digital 5.1 (the standard DVD introduced that some Blurays use) works, but Dolby TrueHD (Bluray) no longer works.
I have not tried playing a DVD directly (Dolby Digital or DTS) and my equipment doesn’t the support Dolby Atmos (BlurayHD) standards to see if that is also bugged.
I found Ironman was a good test Bluray as it has English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 on the same disc!

  • Can’t wait for themes. those are a must.

  • I am downloading need account closed will not buy any of these products again with the selection you allowed, like why the **** would you put computer games on pc with description of erasure and figures of dlc ranging more than an controller, **** ****!

  • What’s up with the be update bricking the controllers and not allowing them to connect? Why is this not talked about more? What is being done to fix this?

  • I don’t have VVR n may ps5

  • The browser, please.

  • want the Grand Trusmo 7, thank you

  • Dear Sony PlayStation team,
due to the fact that on one hand,
the PS5 is barely available and on the other hand, original controllers for the PS4 are not available anymore,
please make an downward compatibility update for the PS4
to use the PS5 controller on the PS4.
Not only you would countless players make happy who couldn’t get a PS5 until now, you would also make a great improvement in the sale of PS5 controllers.
I hope you take my advice into consideration!
    Best regards,
    Axel

  • Ok so we got the update but y’all failed to keep the timestamp for when a application updates like WTF don’t take a step forward to take a step back DO BETTER SOFTWARE IS NOT HARD ON THIS LEVEL 💯🗽

  • When the update came out for better its now worse the R play worked amazing now I keep getting a code 80108d45 this is on all devices trying to connect to my ps5 when I try the ps4 no issues this needs to be addressed please.

  • did anyone else get the problem after the update of their tv just being blank? It seems to be a bug for me with my LG OLED tv. Just curious if I’m alone here or if it is haappening on multiple tv’s

  • When will Sony investigate the problem created by the PS5 system software that either badly capped the upload speed or somehow created a problem where a lot PS5 owners, including myself are reporting upload speeds averaging between low single digits to 30 mbps. My PS5 was one of the first and when I first got it the network test for me was in the area of 150 mbps after one of the system software updates it dropped ridiculously. It is not a problem on my ends as I also own two PS4’s and both of those consoles are testing at 90 to slightly above 100 mbps. My ISP reports no problems on their end and none of my other devices are having any issues. I have Verizon gigabit service 1000/1000 upload and download. My PS5 is hard wired as are the two PS4’s. Below is a link to a reddit thread with over 90 comments with other PS5 owners experiencing the same issue. Sony/PSN please investigate!

  • COMPLAINT ATTENTION UPDATE PERSONNEL: SONY PS5 AND Sony X900H TV

Newest firmware update on Sony X900H and PS5 / LOCKED INTO ALLM/ I wish to use Standard and Vivid TV picture modes with my PS5 using 120hz and full USB 2.0 functionality for playing games, they look more colorful and smooth with the now disabled picture settings due to / FORCED ALLM ON PS5/

PLEASE ENABLE A TOGGLE OF ALLM IN PS5 SETTINGS OR X900H SETTINGS. (However this is not a TV issue, this is a PS5 issue by forcing ALLM Auto low latency mode signal to the TV (which was only updated to accept that signal september October 2021. )

GAME MODE LOOKS HORRENDOUS AND GREY AND DULL. I DO NOT MIND INPUT LAG FOR A BETTER PICTURE!

  • Did Sony finally fix the failure of USB Music Player to launch when a USB stick is inserted before the PS4 is turned on?? Seems so! Such a small fix has made a significant difference. It never made sense to take out a USB stick and then insert the stick in order to launch USB Music Player, for years!

  • Nothing good bout playstation yet
We all whant to play older ps1/2/3 games
    And+its not having normal Internet?!
Playstation is a big ugly joke to me…
System sucks too! Xbox is allway’s bin better tho…🤔😥🙄

  • After this update, my controllers randomly disconnect while playing and even after turning it on and sitting on home screen. I have tried every troubleshooting option possible even hard resetting my console and lost some data, restored default settings, reset the controllers, deleted and added the controllers again and again. The controller syncs with the console but randomly stops working and then flashes blue trying to connect. Ive tried using the usb cable to connect it and continue but won’t work. After restarting the ps5 the controller starts up the console but again randomly after either 5 mins, 15 mins or even after a couple hours the controller will stop working and flash blue. It’s very odd too as my console or game doesn’t freeze, like when I’m playing gta or nfs whatever action im doing at the time it disconnects the game will continue, for example, if I’m driving straight the game will continue driving in the direction im going but i have no more control with the dual sense controller. I have tried three different controllers, i have reset all of them and even restored default settings to troubleshoot. I have no idea why I cant play a game anymore without my controller randomly stop working causing lost data and progress mid games as I cannot back out and save or reconnect any controller. Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution? I have spoken with PS support and all they tell me is to try all the troubleshooting I have done and send it in for a fix and replace. Ever since the new update I have experienced it, I saw on Reddit posts others have experienced it, please lmk if anyone has a solution. thanks.

  • Right after the update finished my ps4 stopped reading disks… yall pulling an apple right now trying to make me buy a ps5 by releasing an update that breaks my device.

  • Guys,

If you are serious about making these improvements listen to your fans. Better Library organising or manual organising. Open source bluetooth, bring back chat communities on the PS and on the app. online notifications to app when the PS is off etc.

  • NGL kinda lame

  • Great update for PS5 and For PS4

  • Hey y’all cant seem to connect my controller. I’ve reset it, hasn’t worked. I’ve used the cable to connect it, and it’ll turn on but then the controller disconnects and wont re-connect to the console. I’ve tried this on multiple controllers so far and it hasn’t worked. I’ve also tried booting it up from LAN so it doesn’t auto connect to the internet but immediately after downloading the new console and controller update my console doesn’t work anymore. I’m super confused and frustrated because it was working fine all day and then I update the console and controller and now my console wont even work. Any help would be great but I have no clue what’s causing this.

  • After waiting in the que for my turn to buy a PS5 (after waiting 2 years!), it got to be my turn to buy only to say “sold out”! What is the point of being selected, given opportunity to buy, only to have none available! Time to switch myself and family/friends to Xbox! So ridiculous! Good riddance Sony!

  • How about making more ps5 console ‘s I’ve been trying to buy one for 2 years. This is ridiculous
