PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation VR2 Sense controller: the next generation of VR gaming on PS5

Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla and Firesprite revealed for PS VR2

Happy New Year everyone.

It is my great pleasure to start off 2022 with news on our next generation virtual reality system for the PS5 console, starting with the official name: PlayStation VR2, and our new VR controller, PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.

PlayStation VR2 takes VR gaming to a whole new level, enabling a greater sense of presence and allowing players to escape into game worlds like never before. With the headset on and controllers in hand, players will feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other – thanks to the creativity of the game worlds being built by our world class developers, and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware.

Building upon our innovations from PS5, PlayStation VR2 adds a true next-gen experience with high-fidelity visuals, new sensory features, and enhanced tracking – along with a simplified single-cord setup.

  • Visual Fidelity: For a high-fidelity visual experience, PS VR2 offers 4K HDR, 110-degree field of view, and foveated rendering. With an OLED display, players can expect a display resolution of 2000×2040 per eye and smooth frame rates of 90/120Hz.
  • Headset-based Controller Tracking: With inside-out tracking, PS VR2 tracks you and your controller through integrated cameras embedded in the VR headset. Your movements and the direction you look at are reflected in-game without the need for an external camera.
  • New Sensory Features: PS VR2 Sense Technology combines eye tracking, headset feedback, 3D Audio, and the innovative PS VR2 Sense controller to create an incredibly deep feeling of immersion. Headset feedback is a new sensory feature that amplifies the sensations of in-game actions from the player. It’s created by a single built-in motor with vibrations that add an intelligent tactile element, bringing players closer to the gameplay experience. For example, gamers can feel a character’s elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character’s head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward. Additionally, PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech makes sounds in the player’s surroundings come alive, adding to this new level of immersion.
  • Eye Tracking: With eye tracking, PS VR2 detects the motion of your eyes, so a simple look in a specific direction can create an additional input for the game character. This allows players to interact more intuitively in new and lifelike ways, allowing for a heightened emotional response and enhanced expression that provide a new level of realism in gaming.

All of these advancements in PlayStation VR2, combined with the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers from the PS VR2 Sense controllers, enable players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way. PS VR2 will also have a simple setup process — with a single cable connected directly to PS5, you can immediately jump into the VR experience.

Today we are also pleased to reveal that one of the biggest exclusive franchises on PlayStation will be coming to PS VR2 – Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla and Firesprite. This original game is being built specifically for PS VR2 and will open the doors for players to go deeper into the world of Horizon.

I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s exciting updates. Just remember, this is only a taste of things to come, and I can’t wait to share more details with you about PS VR2. In the meantime, below is the list of official specifications.

  • It’d be interesting to see if you can use PSVR on classic games as well. It would be a blast for classic 3D shooters (DOOM, Wolfenstein, Quake…), or atmospheric adventures (Ratchet and Clank, Sonic Colors…).

  • Please please be pc compatible with the usb c

  • I don’t know if it would be any fun, but I love the idea of being able to send messages to characters just by blinking. Like sending secret messages in a spy game, or having it be the only way to communicate right after you come out of a coma.

  • What you think of the price of the PSVR2 set? How much will be?

  • When will the pre-order date be released?

  • I’m so excited!
Hope it comes sooner than later :-D
Can’t wait for more Hybrid Games and some Playstation IPs in VR.
    Very curious about the Head-Haptics.

  • How to pre order?

  • The other systems don’t work well when someone is wheelchair bound. Example Beat Saber, when you try to duck it doesn’t go low enough. Will this system work for those In wheelchair? If not sure maybe you should have wheelchair bound people test it and games.

  • Good news overall for PlayStation VR2, but my only hope is that we have the option to play wirelessly, if I don’t keep my Oculus Quest 2, so I’ll wait …

  • Good news overall for PlayStation VR2, but my only hope is that we have the option to play wirelessly, if not, I’ll continue to enjoy my Oculus Quest 2, so, I’ll wait …

  • When can we pre order this in Canada!!!!

  • Kkhloud k

  • We just need the sense controllers for now. If yall think like me it could be better for marketing because if the sense controllers come out with a PSVR1 Bundle for example After the Fall and TWD Saints and Sinners and has an adapter so you can use it for the PS5. This will have so many people jumping on this and it will give a chance to finish the PSVR2 so it can evolve wirelessly.

  • I wish this had built-in headphones, since it is a object you already have to strap on your head, it’d be practical

Since it hasn’t, I hope I can wear it together with the Pulse 3D headset

And I guess I’ll have to wait for PSVR3 for built-in audio and haptic-like vibrations, not regular PS4 vibration

Anyways great upgrade, hoping it’ll be back-compat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I cannot wait for PSVR2. I installed my PS5 three weeks ago (purchased my unit directly for Sony) and could not get my favorite game (Rush of Blood) to run without unexpected interruptions. After numerous calls to Playstation support I decided to move all of my PS4 VR games back to my PS4 which I did last night; all is working fine again.

  • If it’s not backwards compatible with PSVR titles then I’m not interested.

  • Los juegos de RV para PS4 serán compatibles para la nueva lente de RV2 PS5

  • PlayStation Home VR2?

  • PlayStation wireless optional VR2?

  • PlayStation VR2 pre-order to PlayStation Plus members?

  • Would be really cool if Sony made an accessory to hang your PSVR2 on the Ceiling or wall. My gaming room is not fit for VR, so i would like to use my bedroom since it is perfect for VR

  • I pikced up a psvr like a week. Ago bummer me.

Still need to get the games I want, hoping old games work for the new VR when it gets here

  • I’d like to see if we could use the headset as a primary display when playing any game on the ps5 using the dual sense.

It could basically simulate a large 4k oled display.

  • Would this help pave the way to a new 3rd person SOCOM or remaster? lol

  • This is going to be the best VR experience yet.

  • What’s the price range for VR2??

  • I can’t wait but I was really hoping that the head set would be wireless. Like the oculus .

  • Release date and can it be pre-ordered?

  • Any word on plans for PSVR 2 AIM Controller?

  • You are biggest minds of gaming bravo!

  • When is it coming out?

  • The real question is will I be able to get one at retail ? And at launch !?

  • The PS5 has a single USB C. I use a Samsung T7 USB C external drive for all of my PS4 games and, of course, PSVR content. How exactly am I going to hook up the PSVR2 via USB C and play any PSVR content when it is all located on a storage device that requires connection to the only available USB C port? The PS5 clearly needs two USB C ports to support the PSVR2 and an external hard drive! Either that, or I am going to be required to download all new PSVR2 content to the system SSD and disconnect my PS4 drive when using PSVR2. Not very forward thinking. Maybe the next gen PS5 will include a second USB C port, but how many of us want to, or can afford to buy another PS5. As a side note, the Samsung T7 via the USB C on the PS5 loads PS4 games nearly four times faster than the PS4 loads the same game.

  • I am a total VR newb. I don’t own any VR equipment and just started looking into it very recently. Could someone with a bit more knowledge please compare and contrast this system with Valve’s VR system, I think it’s called Steam Index. Is one a clearly better option than the other, are they similar in some ways but not others, and what makes them different if so?

    Thanks.

    • All of them are about the same Sony has more games though. But I really can’t say any are real winners other than the party games on all the platforms and they are all about the same like fruit ninja. There is a few sword fighting games that are fun too but theres no feed back from anything but your eyes tricking your brain thinking its in front of you. Now thats on the good games that aren’t fuzzy or have bugs that mess the camera up or just super sensitive to your movement. Those games will make you take off the headsets quick from either making your head hurt or eyes feel crossed .

  • When is this coming out today is the first I’ve heard of it I’d like to get it please let me know and which one out of the two is the best at Christmas you guys were supposed to let me know when the PS6 was going on sale I heard nothing by the time I found out they were sold out.

  • WHY IS IT STILL NOT WIRELESS?! I would totally switch from oculus quest 2 if it wasn’t connected via usb-c…

  • How can i preorder this?

  • sounds amazing i already have psvr1 and its pretty fun but its hurts my eyes and kinda blurry some times

  • The hardware sounds great but I seriously doubt SIE’s commitment to sustained, high production value, exclusive software after PSP, PS VITA, PS VR and now PS5.

No doubt the price of PS VR2 games is going to shoot up like PS5 games too.

  • does this mean it will be all new hardware for the VR2. will all VR one hardware will be obsolete.

  • Very excited by this — Im glad Playstation has stuck with VR. I wasnt ready to jump in last time, but i will be purchasing PSVR2. Please make Half Life Alyx a launch title!

  • Will Half Life Alyx be coming to PSVR2?

  • I’m pretty excited for this. Willing to pay anything to Sony for it, but I won’t give a penny to scalpers. I’d prefer Sony sell it to me at a higher price in a virtual vip line or something so my cash goes to future development.

  • Nope ! All these responses and not a peep of yes it’s backwards compatible! #moremoney to make for them making us buy our favorites all over. Sj

  • Nope! All theee comments and no acknowledgement from them. The ideal is for them in these hard times is to #makemoremoney by is buying our favorites and wanting the upgrade too! Where’s the giveaways at ?

  • If it HAS to have a cable, please make the cord super long and some kind of extra buyable zipline thingy to put on the ceiling having the cord coming from above your head makes it easier to move around and have fun without the sense of being grounded by a cord.

    Pretty please.

  • That was my question as well, everyone puts out a vr headset and the game catalog starts out ok then dries up fast when everyone gets tired of a new toy. I felt the first one was wasted like the vita in the US. Japan did see a better catalog and it still gets releases. So for me to buy another one I would like Sony and anyone game studios wise to put some effort into it and not just a promo game to kick it off. Everyones one and done and then its up to third party to save the day. And Im not going to get into all the games with bugs that never got fixed. So as much as I would love to see a new generation of vr and accessories pushing the limit, Im waiting this time to see if its done right. Already have Facebook scaming women on a vr we are the sims.

  • PS5 should have some kind of integration with Google Home (and Alexa), it can helps the day by day and can amplify games and responses.

  • How awesome (and handy) it would be if the psvr2 headset was compatible with steam and pc!
