PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation VR2 Sense controller: the next generation of VR gaming on PS5

Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla and Firesprite revealed for PS VR2

Happy New Year everyone.

It is my great pleasure to start off 2022 with news on our next generation virtual reality system for the PS5 console, starting with the official name: PlayStation VR2, and our new VR controller, PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.

PlayStation VR2 takes VR gaming to a whole new level, enabling a greater sense of presence and allowing players to escape into game worlds like never before. With the headset on and controllers in hand, players will feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other – thanks to the creativity of the game worlds being built by our world class developers, and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware.

Building upon our innovations from PS5, PlayStation VR2 adds a true next-gen experience with high-fidelity visuals, new sensory features, and enhanced tracking – along with a simplified single-cord setup.

  • Visual Fidelity: For a high-fidelity visual experience, PS VR2 offers 4K HDR, 110-degree field of view, and foveated rendering. With an OLED display, players can expect a display resolution of 2000×2040 per eye and smooth frame rates of 90/120Hz.
  • Headset-based Controller Tracking: With inside-out tracking, PS VR2 tracks you and your controller through integrated cameras embedded in the VR headset. Your movements and the direction you look at are reflected in-game without the need for an external camera.
  • New Sensory Features: PS VR2 Sense Technology combines eye tracking, headset feedback, 3D Audio, and the innovative PS VR2 Sense controller to create an incredibly deep feeling of immersion. Headset feedback is a new sensory feature that amplifies the sensations of in-game actions from the player. It’s created by a single built-in motor with vibrations that add an intelligent tactile element, bringing players closer to the gameplay experience. For example, gamers can feel a character’s elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character’s head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward. Additionally, PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech makes sounds in the player’s surroundings come alive, adding to this new level of immersion.
  • Eye Tracking: With eye tracking, PS VR2 detects the motion of your eyes, so a simple look in a specific direction can create an additional input for the game character. This allows players to interact more intuitively in new and lifelike ways, allowing for a heightened emotional response and enhanced expression that provide a new level of realism in gaming.

All of these advancements in PlayStation VR2, combined with the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers from the PS VR2 Sense controllers, enable players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way. PS VR2 will also have a simple setup process — with a single cable connected directly to PS5, you can immediately jump into the VR experience.

Today we are also pleased to reveal that one of the biggest exclusive franchises on PlayStation will be coming to PS VR2 – Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla and Firesprite. This original game is being built specifically for PS VR2 and will open the doors for players to go deeper into the world of Horizon.

I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s exciting updates. Just remember, this is only a taste of things to come, and I can’t wait to share more details with you about PS VR2. In the meantime, below is the list of official specifications.

  • The fact this is not wireless is a huge fail, especially after the competition has had several iterations of wireless VR.

  • This is so cool

  • Will I can play the new Horizon with my old PSVR on the new PS5?

  • Three.5 Questions.
    1. Will this be backward compatible with PS4VR games?
    2. What are game studios doing to support game development in this space?
2.5 What type of games can the player expect to see in the meta?
    3. USB-c…. come on really. If Play has no limits, then why am I attached to a 10-foot cable that will undoubtedly be yanked from the console?

    • I wonder if there might be any third party addons that could make PS VR 2 truly wireless?

    • My issue is this: my PS5 Disc edition has a total of 3 USB ports. As it is I need 4.
My PS4 external USB drive, Pulse headset dongle, controller charge dock, and PSVR 1.5. WHY OH WHY did we not get 4+ ports?

My only recourse at the moment is to separately power the controller dock, but I’m already maxed out on my AC ports (and I’ve got multiply monster power units to run ‘most’ of my multimedia devices.)

    • I wanted wireless also. But when you look into it, it has to do with how powerful the the unit is when attached to the console as well as the bandwidth.

The reason quest 2 works is because it’s basically a vr phone. And it’s one that you have to charge every 3 hours.

    • … You wouldn’t get these specs wirelessly. And if you did, the battery would only last an hour maybe?

  • PS4 compatible?

  • PSVR2 should really be cable free. This is a big miss and will hurt the overall adoption of the unit.

I’ll still end up getting it because I love my PSVR… but I can’t wait until this is cable free.

    • Wireless VR still isn’t capable of running AAA titles. Even the competition requires the ‘optional’ tether to play the beefier games. Latency is another hurdle to overcome.

  • Hurry up and being it out

  • This is gonna be Amazing!😍

  • Please Sony when this come out have the first exclusive pre-orders be ordered only from the Playstation Store from actual Playstation 5 consoles, and NOT web browsers.
This will limit initial pre-sales from actual PS5 owners, and not scalpers\bots.
Even better you can reserve a lot for Playstation Plus Subscribers only and have it also only accessible from the PS5 consoles PSN Store.

    Thank you.

  • This looks promising

  • I am excited for PSVR2, but you could not have chosen a worse game to showcase the new hardware – it was very underwhelming. You should have showcased Gran Turismo 7 multiplayer, with everyone on the grid using PSVR2… You would have had a red hot product on your hands right there.

  • Please tell me it’s backwards compatible! Fingers crossed it is, it would be an awesome move, I was holding back on a lot of cool PSVR games since I don’t have the original VR set.

  • Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these!

  • It’s interesting but at this point I am a bit “device saturated”. I have few VR kits including the original PSVR and I’m not willing to get another kit that doesn’t also work with PC.

  • I want it!

  • Will Sony support low budget indie developers, or are they focusing on big developers only?

Can I use PSVR2 with PCVR, using Virtual Desktop or a similar app? If so, will PCVR apps take full advantage of all the new features that PSVR 2 offers?

How will watching movies in PSVR2 compare to watching them on a Quest 2? Will Sony offer their movie library in a format for PSVR 2?

  • It’s wonderful to start the new year with new info about PS VR2, I’m looking forward to the premiere 💙💙💙 When more info about PlayStation partnership with Discord?

  • Now all we need is an Zen+RDNA2 Vita 2 that we can pair with PSVR2 for VR on the go.

    • Now THAT is an interesting idea!

That said, I don’t want VR users playing out on the streets! (I know you just meant ‘away from home’ 😜👍)

  • Here’s an innovative idea. Allow us to either attach or swap out the lenses with specialized corrective lenses for those of us who regularly wear glasses so that we don’t have to wear them within the headset. As things stand with the current headset, I have to wear my glasses inside the headset and they are pressed so close to my face that my eyelashes are constantly sweeping across the lenses when I blink, smearing them with natural oils until it looks like I’m viewing everything through a greasy haze. If we could pop out the main lenses and replace them with specialized corrective lenses, then I can have more room between my eyes and the lenses and not have to worry about this problem ever again.

  • Am I the only one looking for a release date?…😅

  • Will we be able to watch live sports on the VR. Like we’re sitting courtside???

    • I remember watching a basketball game in VR. It was really cool, but limited. It would be wild to see that market evolve.

  • Are we going to get Alyx on this???? I want to play the game so bad.

  • I would love to see a new Rush of Blood made for this. They could take my money now.

  • Can we use this on the PS4 too or is it only a PS5 type thing? I’m asking since we can play most PS5 games on the PS4. And it would be amazing if we could trade in the old VR for the new VR, but atleast we’re getting another VR for the PS5!

Thanks again for the amazing work Playstation hope you guys keep up the work.

  • Preoder date?

  • Loved PSVR 1, will PSVr 2 have built in cameras or do we need to face a stand alone camera again?

  • Oops I misread info above

  • I wanna this headset PC compatible :-/
    i have both..pc + ps5

  • Will it work with the ps4??

  • I could ask all the questions we all really want to know, but I’m not too young so I was raised not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

In reality this was just a ton of great information. Not just the fact that the Horizon game is being made for it, but all the detailed specs.

Really excited for this to bringing us one step closer to Playstation 9 😁👍
If you don’t get that reference, you’re too young for that too.
If you work for Sony and don’t get that, ask someone older there who does haha.

  • Anyone have a clue on price $$??!! Wonder how much this will sit us back?

  • Can we expect backwards compatibility with most or all PS4 VR games?

  • Next to backwards compatibility i wonder if we’ll need a new camera/the HD camera that released alongside Ps5 or (i hope) no cam at all cause if i understood correctly the headset itself has 4 cameras/trackers?

The single cord setup is a big selling point to me. I just have no desire to go through the process with PSVR1 everytime that’s why i want to sell and replace it…

  • Exactly when can we purchase this, and more importantly is it gone be at Costco??

  • Looks cool but how expensive is it…

  • Ohh men 🤦‍♂️👌

  • Will the VR headset NOT be tethered to the console, but free like the Oculus. I find it very restricting to have a plastic umbilicus hanging from my VR headset.

  • Spider-man VR ??

  • Only having one hand, the controllers give me huge concern.

What accessibility steps are you taking to ensure games can be played with a single controller?

  • Imagine the headset is wireless

  • Hopefully this VR doesn’t have a wire

  • Gran Turismo with VR please :)

  • is there going to be a cord? that was my only problem i had with the first PSVR it just got really annoying and it would wrap it self all the time

  • This looks fantastic. Hopefully the IPD adjustment has a good setting close 75mm. Most VR headset only go to 68mm which is too small for adults with a larger head and a big IPD. My IPD is 75mm, and the ones that are less than 70mm cause a blurry view.
I’ve had HTC Vive and Vive Pro, they went to 74mm and were good. I’ve tried Quest and the HP Reverb G2, both only go to 70mm and both have very narrow face plates, like they were made for kids or people with small heads, not good. I’ve tried the Vive Pro 2, which only goes to 70mm, it is let down by poor lenses that have a very narrow focus point.
I’m currently using a Pimax 8KX, which has a manual max IPD adjustment of 70mm and software adjustment to increase the max IPD for beyond 70mm, so I can get it to 75mm and the lenses have a massive focus point, so this works very well. Hopefully the PSVR2 will be similar.

  • I bought PS5 to play new games, not blockbusters from ps one.
Don’t think that it is a bad thing that it will not be compatible with older gen consoles.

Same thing with cell phones and no one don’t care that prices went skyhigh, again we buy it every year or two again…

  • Is headset wireless or does it require the usb c to function?.
If so is there a wireless version in the pipeline cus I’d rather wait for that. Really don’t want another wired vr. 👍

  • The main question isn’t if it’s gonna be backwards compatible with psvr1.
The main question is if Sony is willing to to make enough psvr2 to fill consumer demand. Remember what happened with the ps5 at launch? Hopefully history won’t repeat itself. 😕

  • I wanna sign up for an opportunity as soon as possible to preorder the psvr2, I’m tired of fighting against scalpers, i actually have a ps5, no thanks to the program last time. I don’t want to get screwed on this.

  • Playstation VR2 có tương thích với playstation PS4 pro không. Nếu Ok thì thật là tuyệt vời.

  • Adjustable lens separation – OMG YESSSS!!!! Finally! Please, make the range at least as wide as Quest 2 has (even better if it’s more – there is enough people with IPD more than 70mm, and the first PSVR is absolutely unusable for them). Tracking via cameras built into the headset – great! Also connection to PS5 via USB should make development easier (if it could also be connected to a PC). Can’t wait to see it in action!
