Welcoming Housemarque to the PlayStation Studios family

Developers of classic PlayStation hits including Returnal, Super Stardust HD, and Dead Nation join PlayStation Studios

Today I’m thrilled to welcome a new member to the PlayStation Studios family! I have been a fan of Housemarque since the studio’s early days when they introduced Super Stardust HD to PlayStation fans. Housemarque’s recent release of Returnal proves the studio is one with incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community. This addition enhances the creative force of PlayStation Studios, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Housemarque.

Welcome to the family, Housemarque!

From Ilari Kuittinen, Co-founder and Managing Director, Housemarque:

Today is a big day for Housemarque and it has been over 26 years in the making. Our strong partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment started with Super Stardust HD on PS3 and since then we have made arcade inspired games for all of the PlayStation platforms. With Returnal for PS5, our most recent release, our biggest foray into third-person action gaming solidified our voice and brand in the industry as delivering unique and quality player experiences.

We are so excited to finally join the PlayStation Studios family! This gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue delivering on gameplay centric approaches, while still experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern artform. Locally here in Helsinki, this also means that we will officially expand the PlayStation family to a growing industry hub and secure the legacy of the oldest game studio in Finland.

Finally, what this means for our fans? We at Housemarque are gamers, and we have grown from the need to perfect and tinker with facets of games that we have found most fascinating. We are also not known for shying away from running our own course and trying out new combinations. With the backing of SIE and its family of studios supporting us, we can truly grow into our place in the industry and show what Housemarque can create with no limitations. We can’t wait to show everyone what will be in store in the upcoming years, and we hope to usher in more lasting memories and exhilarating titles for the next quarter century and beyond.

  • Why would you rather invest in a smaller studio rather than taking less of a risk in a publisher such as Square Enix? It’s like you’re scared of spending a lot on a huge publisher.

    • Square Enix isn’t for sale. You sound ridiculous.

    • @dalarki

      🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

    • Firstly Sony couldn’t even buy SE without massive loans/sales.

SE would cost 15-20 billion or more, Sony in total is only worth 45, but only roughly 1-2 is open for investing. So they’d have to take on massive risks to even buy it.

Then secondly Square Enix’s games department makes losses yearly. The only “profits” SE make is sales of property, not games.

Taking on massive loans to buy a company that’s only profit is from selling itself is a bit silly. It’s more likely to bankrupt Sony than do anything.

So, buying smaller companies makes sense and is far, far less risky, and is about all they can actually do.

  • I agree. Sony is so cheap they always only purchase small studios that have zero flagship IP. Xbox gamers are about to get one solid RPG per year from their 1st party while we continue to get 3rd party exclusive RPGs that won’t get any sequels.

  • Sweet! This is awesome. Maybe now we can get Outland on PS Now? One of their best games!

  • Awesome. Loved Housemarque since half of it was Bloodhouse who made Stardust and Super Stardust on the Amiga! Always found Housemarque reliable for good shooty fun on PlayStation. :)

  • Perfect acquisition, great studio!!!

  • The most expected thing happened next is bluepoint

  • Congrats Housemarque and Playstation! Like peanut butter and chocolate. Been a long time coming, cant wait to see what you cook up next!

  • I love you Playstation

  • Cmon now Housemarque make Knack 3 please. Give Cerny a chance to fulfill his vision.

  • Incredible news, I haven’t heated Returnal yet but I’ve been having a blast playing it. Hoping they continue to put out amazing games like it!

  • Awesome News

  • This is great news! I’ve been a playstation gamer for a long time, and this only convinces me more to continue investing on playstation.
I hope this news means more stability and better working conditions for the talented developers working behind the stage, building the great experiences Housemarque continues to produce. In the end it should be about everyone winning, better games should equal happier developers, in my opinion.
Returnal is fantastic, by the way!

  • Welcome to the Playstation family! I’m a big fan of all Housemarque games! Housemarque is one of the main reasons I chose Playstation for all of my gaming fun. Congratulations and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

  • Awesome news Hermen Hulst. This studio makes great games. Returnal was my first PS5 game I played and what a game was! I loved it. Hopefully they’ll be able to make Nex Machina 2 on the side one day lol. I love that they have some security now and can continue to grow in seize to make even bigger games.

  • I have purchased every single Housemarque game throughout the years. My first were Super Stardust HD and Dead Nation on PS3, and I knew from then on this studio was going to become big one day. Outland comes out and proves to be another great game from them. Resogun blows my mind to bits. Nex Machina becomes the best arcade shoot’em up in the entire genre. Returnal is my GOTY so far in 2021, I can’t stop playing it. Housemarque have an incredible team and I hope they expand to continue to make bigger and greater games. I love this developer so much. Thank you for believing in them, Sony. They must truly feel honored.

  • Well done. But I’m wondering how many more days I’ll loose due to ps5 bugged rest Mode + lack of save point on returnal.

  • Yes
    thank you

  • Congratulations

  • Fantastic news! I’ve played and loved every game by this studio and so excited to see what they will do next!

  • BluePoint next , Then Kojima production please Sony Playstation <3

  • Congratulations, you guys! I’ve loved your work for a long time, and I’m excited that you’ve found a home in PlayStation, and am wishing you all the best! I’ve yet to be disappointed by a game you’ve produced, and I can’t wait to see what you guys are cooking up next!

  • This is great! Congratulations!

  • Congratulations to all parties involved !
A good piece of business by Sony.
All the very best for your future endeavors guys !

  • Awesome!

  • Housemarque please make something like Mass Effect. Now that your studio is about to enter the big leagues, and with you already being sci-fi gods, it’s time to start making big moves. Returnal is an incredible game, especially the combat and map system. I would love to see Housemarque’s take on action RPGs in the sci-fi genre. Action RPGs sell incredibly well and are always fun to replay again and again.

  • Sony what the hell is up with blue box game studios?

  • Congratulations HMQ. Returnal is such a gem. I hope the acquisition affords both the security and creative freedom to continue bringing the HMQ DNA to new creative heights.

  • Glad to see another solid studio added to the team!

  • LEFT__4__DEAD__2

Dead Nation is an amazing game!!!

  • It’s most likely bluepoint next

  • Adonis, insomniac when Sony bought then wasn’t a small company at all, they made the original Sypro games, then the Ratchet & Clank series, and now Spiderman series as well, not small Ip’s, but big Ip’s, same with Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica Studios etc

  • Wow that’s out the blue !

But nice purchase well worth the money and lot’s good Ips to enjoy on Playstation / PC ( soon hopefully)

  • I am so genuinely happy for the employees of Housemarque! It was so disheartening to read the “arcade is dead” post, and it’s so exciting that their brand of arcade-inspired, gameplay-focused games will continue!

Housemarque have made some true masterpieces, but a couple really stand out. Resogun is refined to perfection and is fun for pretty much anyone who tries it. I’m told Nex Machina didn’t sell well, but it is honestly one of the best designed and executed games I’ve ever played. It happened to be in a genre that was not popular at the time, but that doesn’t take away from its accomplishments.

Despite Nex Machina, the studio felt the need to completely shift gears and develop (sigh) a battle royale game, which thankfully seems to have been sidelined so the devs could focus on Returnal. What a wise move! And one, I’m sure, was possible because of Sony’s resources, trust, and commitment to gaming as an art form.

Returnal really is exceptional. Every moment is fun. The hundreds of game design decisions seem to have come together perfectly. It’ll be hard to top it!

Also, Ari Pulkinnen is absolutely amazing at creating game soundtracks. I hope he is still involved with the studio!

  • I second that Sony should celebrate by bringing Outland to PS4/PS5 as a digital purchase.

  • I watched one of the Returnal developer videos and Harry (game director?) said something like “gameplay is what’s happening in the player’s head.” That statement showed me that this team truly understands video games.

Good gameplay isn’t pressing triangle for a camel to take you across ancient Egypt. Good gameplay isn’t mindlessly looking at a mini-map until you get to the objective marker. Good gameplay isn’t ten thousand context-sensitive animations that look fluid but rob you of control.

Gameplay is deciding “should I take care of the big enemy first or the five smaller ones? The smaller ones make it really hard to get the big guy, but I’ll have to survive the big guy longer if I go for the little ones first . . .” That’s a very basic example but it’s something neglected by many developers.

Returnal is all the proof you need that this studio knows what they’re doing.

  • Although I enjoyed Resogun, Dead Nation and still sometimes play Super Stardust HD I’m not a big fan of these kind of games (definitely not a 80 euro kind of fan) but I will try Returnal when the price will get a deep discount. Still a great addition for PlayStation to diversify their portfolio of games.

  • Noice, now how about more Kojima Production games?

  • This feels like a natural acquisition. Much like Insomniac they always felt like an honorary first party studio. They were making mind-blowingly good indie arcade games before Returnal, and I was devastated the day they said the were abandoning the genre. This deal will definitely give them a little more security, which hopefully means more ambition. I’ll buy anything they put out because Harry and the team really know how to create satisfying gameplay. However, it would be great to see them focus on a mix of large and small scale projects so that they can make the next Resogun or Nex Machina…. the Nex(t) Machina, if you will.

  • Yay more games like Returnal please!

  • Housemarque has been one of my favorite developers over the last several years. Their games are of consistently high quality. They always manage to combine beautiful visuals, awesome audio, and gameplay that’s challenging and addictive.

I’ve invested many hours trying to master games like Super Stardust HD, Resogun, and Nex Machina, steadily improving my skills and trying to ascend the scoreboards. These games are so satisfying and rewarding. You want to keep playing just to see what their creative minds will throw at you next.

This is an excellent acquisition for Sony and PlayStation Studios, and a real feather in their cap. I look forward to seeing what Housemarque has in store for the future.

  • I am a Housemarque Games fan because of Super Stardust, Resogun, Nex Machina, and Returnal. They only get better, so I will be looking forward to their next game now that they are officially a PlayStation Studio.

  • Love the banner!! Welcome Housemarque.

But I love the Japan “mistake” this morning on Twitter an PS Blog with the BluePoint Games Aquisition banner.. why not display both. We all know of the job listings for SIE PlayStation Studios Austin, Texas for the last 2 months.

  • Good news. Same thing with the acquisition of Bluepoint Games.

  • Their best version of Stardust is on CD32 console. Legendary 25 CD tracks which is still CD32 exclusive, and 3D tunnel sequences missing on PS3/PS4 versions.

  • For the past 10 years they only made Playstation games anyway so this is a pretty sad announcement. Oh wait, sorry, Microsoft is crying now because they only got Bethesda…..*sigh*.

Now if Sony would update my PS5 to play PC games I would be happy since then i could have psplus AND xbox live on the same console!!!!! Yea, yea, I am dreaming again.

    • I’ve had far more hours of enjoyable gaming out of Housemarques games in past decade or so than I’ve had from Bethesda’s…

    • @ Carnivius_Prime – As you should be,Housemarque games are not only top quality crafts but always incredibly fun gameplay.Pretty different from the buggy mess and outdated tech that bethesda games are.Sure they have good games but we didn’t lose much by losing bethesda and if ms want their games to sell well…they’ll have to keep releasing on PS hahaha.

  • Sony PlayStation the best place to play your favorite game especially games like Horizon zero Dawn and God of war and The last of Us and much more Sony PlayStation keep doing the awesome job that you’re doing… Sony for life…

  • Sony PlayStation the best place to play your favorite exclusive titles, games like Horizon zero Dawn God of war The last of Us and much more, Sony PlayStation thank you so much for keeping me entertain with all these exclusive titles keep doing the awesome work that Sony PlayStation is doing…Sony for life…

  • So happy to hear this news. I know that I and many other PlayStation gamers are very excited to have the Legendary studio join the family. We’ve loved your games through several generations and absolutely cannot wait to see what’s next! Welcome HOUSEMARQUE!

  • Great acquisition! Still haven’t beat returnal yet but very fun to play.

  • Well I’m a huge Housemarque fan since Stardust HD,when I 1st played it I just thought to myself damn these guys are good and I’m always right when it comes to great devs, all their games afterwards were top-notch.So while Returnal is a reason to buy a PS5 and the fact that they’ll make more games for it another reason yes I could be happy about Housemarque joining the PS family but in the current pathetic state Sony is well…it’s not something to be happy about unfortunately cuz this won’t matter if their games go to pc in fact it’s even worse cuz without counting Outland which they didn’t do under Sony all Housemarque games since Stardust have remained PS exclusive so if now that they’re part of the PS family their games start going to pc well…WHAT A DISASTER.So unfortunately not much to be happy about thanks to Sony and the 2 numb skulls in its command.

On another hand I figure Housemarque will only get bigger and more daring with their games meaning they’ll get more attention like they’ve been getting with Returnal and people will finally recognize how talented they are.
