PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Continue Operations

Players will be able to continue to purchase games on PS3 and PS Vita.

Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.

Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.

  • Thank you Jim for reversing the closure of the PSN store on PS3 and PS Vita. I hope you will allow occasional sales for on the Playstation digital store on PS3 and PS Vita. There has not been any sales when browsing the store on PS3 or PS Vita, and I would really like to have some sales again. I just spent over $300 for the past few weeks on older digital games that I want to continue to play and own, but some of the games I want are really expensive to purchase, and I would really welcome a sale from time to time, especially on older PSP, PSOne, PS2, PS Vita, PSN and PS3 games please!

  • Good job, finally now make them playable on the PS5. At least make the PsOne PS2 classics playable

  • Please fix the CBomb.

  • Thank you!

Now if you could make my PS3 store purchases backwards compatible on the PS4 and PS5 then I will consider purchasing a PlayStation console.

And could you put Silent Hill 1, 2, 3, and 4 on the PlayStation Store? Not the HD collection. The original PS1 and PS2 releases.

  • Satisfied I now longer need to post my copy+paste diatribe (included below for what is hopefully the last time), but there are a handful of issues that do need to be addressed:

    1) The PS3 Store fails to generate purchase icons, and fails to redownload previously purchased content. This may be solvable by reverting to the classic Store UI, from before the prior web Store.

    2) The PSTV Store is not at parity with the Vita Store (which itself needs to receive updates to recent releases), including its LiveArea panel, which has been stuck with a specific timeframe of releases compared to the later, cleaner display of the Vita Store’s LiveArea’s category panels. This concern extends to both systems’ Videos LiveArea and PSTV’s Recommended panel (which, honestly, just needs to be removed). There are still items compatible with both systems that do not show in the Store, and items that can’t download directly despite being transferrable from a PS3.

    3) All systems’ Download List needs at the very least options to filter by compatible systems or, better, content type, as well as sort by name and release (that is, sort add-on content by their applicable full games).

    4) Restore access to the prior web Store, to make it simpler for content management on legacy systems via the Download Queue, enhanced by the PSDLE browser extension (which performs some functions as detailed in the prior point), and allow for sorting all content by “New This Week/Month”, which I found vital for finding new add-on content compared to the current Store.

This is the bare minimum to be done if your company takes its responsibility to the medium seriously, but there’s many lingering issues you have to opportunity to finally address. Please, make good on that slogan you tout, that “play has no limits.”

    • For posterity…
      ====================
Make an official PS.Blog post announcing the closure of legacy PlayStation Store services for PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita, including PSOne Classics, PS2 Classics, and PlayStation minis content.

Own up to this company’s direction and be upfront with your erstwhile community regarding this severely anti-consumer, anti-developer, and anti-legacy decision with no disclosed plans for decades of experiences beyond the insufficient premise of PlayStation Now rotation.

We deserve to know beyond a one-off e-mail, and Sony deserves direct feedback from its providers.

  • Thank you! I still use my Vita all the time. It’s a great little portable even with the Switch.

  • Thanks! Hey, great news! I admit that I haven’t really purchased much on the PS Store lately, indeed, my only purchase this year has been the DLC for Dark Souls after I heard that the service was shutting down soon. But I was negatively affected by the initial announcement.

The end of support for the PS3/Vita/PSP seemed like an end of support for me as a player in the PlayStation environment. It seemed like a decision that favored greed over the valuation of games as art. I am genuinely glad that these games will continue to be available, and that people who prefer to play on these systems have been recognized.

I also want to thank those people whose advocacy brought about this change of policy. I feel that you represented my interests without even knowing it! So, thanks again!

  • Why are people playing PS3?

Move on with the tech…. Is my opinion

They’re not charging too much for a ps5… Just sacrifice some wasteful items….

    • There are still plenty of good games on PS3 that aren’t available on PS5. Money is not the issue here, game preservation is. Almost every game worth playing on PS5 is also available on PS4 right now, so the PS5 can wait for at least another 3 years as far as I’m concerned.

  • “…it was born out of a number of factors, such as me being the worst SIE CEO in almost two decades and not understanding our customers in the slightest.”

  • Color me impressed, very rarely do companies actually listen to the pleas of their consumer. Keep up the good work

  • Hi I have alot of Ps3 games on back log and I been wanting to get ps vita too I have ps4 and I would like to get a PS5 soon. soo please Jim dont close the stores for Ps3 and PS Vita. Give me time to play all my games.

  • Crossbuy and emulation for PS1-PS3 games.

    Do it.

Then we wouldn’t have to have this conversation.

Oh and thanks for cowardly walking back on one of your blatantly anti-consumer, anti-developer practices.

Seriously what is your strategy here? Just see how long you can keep skinning the same pool of idealistically naiive and gutless fans (like me, to be clear) until it dries up or a cataclysmic shift in the industry causes Sony to go bankrupt?

Now more than ever both games and Sony need new blood and new ideas.

Games from all different budgets, cultural backgrounds, genres, artistic intentions, levels of graphical fidelity and even release date are more visible and beloved then ever.

Companies are experimenting with fully portable home consoles and built-in VR headsets. Others are developing subscription services that offer hundreds of games from a huge variety of developers and release dates.

Sticking your head in the sand and hoping everyone else will follow suit is distasteful to outsiders and alienating to a fully conscious fanbase.

Find something better. Or we will.

  • thank you Jim. I hope this puts all vita and ps3 owners at ease, at least for now. But as pointed out throughout twitter, this shutting down of the psn store(s) will pose a continual problem for these consoles as well as ps4 and ps5 in the future. Please let the community know [eventually] what the overall long-term solution will be so that games will be able to be played long should their online marketplaces and cmos batteries expire and be taken down. You can’t build goodwill from your customer base or have any confidence in a digital future after people spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on purchases only to tell them in about 10-15 years, “oh woops, you’re out of luck. these purchases are actual time bombs set to expire into oblivion!”

  • Thanks Sony.

Please allow sales for PS3/Vita games again.

Hope Developers who cancelled their Vita games due to the previous announcement, can resume without issue.

  • Thank you for doing the right thing.
As a supremely loyal Sony boy since 1995, I was on the verge of giving up.
Server, after server closing…, This was the final straw.
Thank god you have reversed your decision.

May I ask, will the updates for LBP: GOTY and GT5 become available again? As I heard reports that you’d already started pulling the updates for some PS3 games.

  • THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

  • Just to clarify, when the PSP store shuts down, we’ll still be able to purchase PSP titles on the Vita yes?

    • You should be able to, the PSP store has been shut down for years, but was left “open” so we could redownload old games we’d purchased.
The PSP games on Vita are integrated into the Vita store, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

  • Good news, it shouldn’t have really been a consideration to start with but I’m glad it’s no longer happening

  • Shouldn’t have been a thing in the first place but glad to see they changed course on this.
Also bring back the FLASH SALES!! for these hardwares. And lower the prices for all dlcs please
FLASH SALES, FLASH SALES, FLASH SALES

  • Thanks so much for listening to us and allowing us to keep access to ps3 and the vita. I am curious though. Are there any plans to add like a groups or communities thing back. That is how a lot of us kept in touch and could find others in masses at once to enjoy adventures together in or games.

  • This is a very good news the decision of the ps3 store to remain open. PS3 and PlayStation fans like me since 23 Years will be grateful and remain loyal to PlayStation and Sony.
Thank You and greeting from Germany

  • Thank you very much for keeping the stores online for the PS3 And vita but it should be a good idea to keep the PSP for the updates and patches for the games and I’m a loyal PlayStation person since the PlayStation one thank you

  • Thank you…it’s hard to find the ps4 system at an affordable price. I love my ps3 and I love my games..so keeping the ps3 going is a great idea.

  • That’s great news! However a lot of the games in the ps3 store are severely overpriced will you be doing Holiday sales every now and then for people who can’t spend 40 dollars on a 10 year old game?

  • Yeah.. I’m soooo happy….ps4 are to expensive..plus it would cost to mucjy money to stay up on….gotta buy the unit, gotta pay for internet, then gotta pay to play online with friends..(that’s what xbox does) so I won’t use Xbox. I was gonna go back to pc games that are free to play if I had to pay to play..but now I’m good and will keep my ps3 going..

  • Really happy the PS3 and Vita store closure has been reconsidered.

Please also reconsider the devs who still have games to bring to Vita and let them do so.

Also please bring Suikoden 5 as a PS2 classic to the PS3 store so I can complete my collection! Thanks. ❤

  • Thank god ps3 is still going to be online and psp/vita now please let the ps4&5 have full backwards compatibility xbox did it why can’t PlayStation think about it all the classics on ps4 and 5 would be the best way to go to play older games but the only problem I have is that EA service has to go seriously its nothing but a money grab

  • This is great news! Thanks for keeping these games alive.

  • Wow, this is such incredible news. Thank you guys so much for caring. PlayStation’s history is also our history as gamers. We have strong attachments to these older titles and we hope you guys continue to try preserving them. Even titles that didn’t sell amazingly hold some strong value for people out there. Thank you for listening to the community. I’ll remember this when I finally purchase my PS5 : )

  • Unfortunately this comes across as an empty gesture. What’s the point of being able to continue buying digital PS3 games when we know full well we’ll lose access to those titles when the CBOMB goes off? Not to mention that I now have zero incentive to buy anything for PS4 and PS5 since CBOMB will kill it all regardless of if I bought it physical or digital.

PlayStation, you need to keep working, because you still have a lot of issues to resolve here.

  • That’s good, too bad the PSP is going away soon. I loved that little thing, but mine died ages back and I can get a PS3 or Vita from Ebay and have a play there.

  • Hey Jim since you said ” We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable” I am guessing you must have seen the backlash and outrage against this on social media right? There is no other way you would have noticed this seeing as this was only something a very small amount of people brought up. So then why did you say there was no massive adverse reaction to horizon zero dawn going to Pc when there clearly was a lot of adverse reactions to it on social media and in the comment section on the ps blog. You need to do better when it comes to looking at what the core playstation fanbase coz games going to pc certainly wasnt one of them

  • Rip, the PSP store is still closing.

  • Unfortunately, they didn’t do this with PlayStation Home.

  • great news

  • Just let us play these games on ps5. Ty

  • thank you Mr Jim Ryan now i hope they fix the cbomb issue and support video game preservation

  • Since your listening to us… Finally. Let’s bring on the backwards compatible on ps4 and ps5 to enable playing of ps1, Ps2 and possblie ps3 games…… You’ve already used and sold opensource software in the ps1 classic and the emu software inside the Ps2 to ps4 classic you can download and also the psvita games like loco roco and parappa the rappa and such… Maybe either make your own or give us what we truly want and that’s backwards compatible without rebuying the games we already own…. Paid once already, let me. Play them on one console and now 10 hooked up to one tv set.

  • Well Jim, next step would be to develop a way to play/emulate PS1/PS2 games in our PS5s alongside a curated library of these games available on the PSN. Keeping your legacy alive for future generations. Thank you.

  • Look Sony, I’m going to be extremely honest. It makes not sense to keep the store open if we cannot purchase stuff for it. There is some DLC that I missed out and would like to buy. The fact that I cannot but you still keep the store running is completely pointless. If you are going to keep the store open, then we should be able to still purchase stuff from it no matter what

    • I think you misunderstood, they are keeping it open so you can still make purchases.
This was to fix the choice from before.

    • eriemk3 is trying to say re-expand the DLC library… The selection is so limited its barely usable as it stands… Why isnt the entire library of games available for download if its so hard to find discs bc sony doesnt sell physical discs for old consoles anymore… They are missing out on alot of money… At least $1000 is being missed out on from me alone… I would pay for so much more but the library is far too limited…

  • Thank you for doing the right thing.

  • I think the vita deserves to live on and sony should try the handheld market again. As I get older I would much rather prefer a powerful handheld system that had a big game library of ps1, ps2 and ps3 games. I have no interest in buying old hardware or running questionable emulators. Since getting a ps5 is basically impossible I’m tempted to grab a switch just for the convenience of it’s design.

  • That’s big, yet humble of you to admit it was the wrong decision. I love Sony. Long Live Playstation.

  • Sony made a mistake of hiring you as a CEO! For a highly paid CEO at Playstation you are obviously a moron! Not worth every penny Sony is paying you! Why not step down to save yourself from future embarrassment! Previous CEO was far effective than you!

  • Next order of business; reassemble Evolution, remaster Driveclub, resurrect Motorstorm. You have titans in your corner, unleash them.

  • Sort of makes you wonder, what if they just gave PS3 backwards compatibility to current and future consoles like they did with basically everything other console?

  • Nice, Now please return the ¡FLASH SALE! FOR PS3 AND PSP-VITA GAMES

  • THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE VITA ALIVE!

  • How about letting ps3 and vita have a big sale again. Something to remember Ps3 and Vita for….a big sale party. That be real nice. I’m sure everyone will appreciate that.

  • I’ve been a loyal PlayStation supporter for a long time but recent decisions have had me extremely worried about the direction of the brand. While I’m still concerned about some things this is a step in the right direction.
