PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Continue Operations

Players will be able to continue to purchase games on PS3 and PS Vita.

Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.

Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.

  • While you still have a ton of problems from the last few years, I’m glad to see you backpedaled on at least one of them. Now you just need to work on that recently discovered battery/check-in issue, PS3/Vita sales, over censorship of Japanese games, & Japan Studio are just a few off the top of my head.

    • Oh, & the web store not being able to buy PS3/Vita stuff as well. The store has been such a mess since then, I haven’t used it once since.

  • Good move. This planned shutdown shook my trust in Sony’s digital stores and I was planning on cutting back on PlayStation purchases.

Now can we build back up Japan Studios?

  • Thank you so much for this!!!! The Vita was one of my favorite consoles and there are so many amazing digital only RPG games, I was so disheartened about possibly missing one :,((

  • This is awesome! Just curious but does this mean I can still buy PSP games on the PS3 store and transfer them via USB? If that’s the case then this is perfect.

  • Graças a Deus voces desistiram ia fazer uma maior cagada e outra volta a vende o psvita da uma chance pro psvita pra mim o melhor portatil da historia e volta a fazer jogos tbm o psvita e gigante faz isso pra nos ok

  • Hey Sony,

Thanks for listening to the community. Please consider implementing PS3 and PSP backwards compatibility in the PS5. There’s so much potential for revenue in that area if players can play older games on that platform.

At the very least, in case this ever happens again, please consider updating the PS3’s Playstation store to be more user-friendly. It’s quite difficult and tedious to scroll down through every game and DLC I own when I navigate to Playstation Store’s library. It would be nice if our games and DLCs are organized into a grid and also allow us to filter out what’s a game and what’s a DLC.

  • Would be great if I could manage my PS3 stuff via web store…

  • Well done. I hope Sony move over PS One and PS2 Classics to the PS4/5 with some enhancements (fixed resolution and better framerate).

  • Thank you Sony now please do t ever do something like this till you can integrate backwards compatibility in some way to the ps5 for these games.

  • Excellent! I’ll get a Vita again and will be turning it into my own personal Playstation history preservation machine. Good move, Sony!

  • I don’t see the point in buying a PS4 now, and of course PS5 are like unicorns. Keep it open until we can get the next gen – how hard is that to understand?

  • We need the sales back on ps3! Everything that is currently in the store is full price. It is good to offer offers systematically to maintain active sales and incentivize the public to buy games, dlc, etc

  • “…and the next generation of VR.” That’s all I needed to hear :) PlayStation exclusives in VR could be incredible. (industry changing imo)
Also, thanks for listening to the PlayStation fans. Please keep pushing the limits to keep Sony on top!

  • Appreciate that you reconsidered this.

On another note; is there any chance you could review the state of the customer support available to New Zealand and Australian customers?

I’ve had numerous cases where the staff have no idea what they’re are doing. I literally have a support ticket open that’s nearly 2 years old. No joke.
One time I called about getting a PSVR repaired under warranty, they told me that their service conditions “superseded New Zealand consumer law”. You couldn’t make it up.

It really needs a major review. It’s literally the only reason I won’t consider getting a PS5, so to lessen the chances of having to deal them.

    Thanks

  • This is a nice small victory.

However, Jim, ‘for the foreseeable future”
You mention playstations game history but still Downplay Backwards Compatibility.
this is more a stop gap.

Please implement Physical PS1-2 and 3 disc Support on the PS5.
The Console is powerful enough to handle it.

Cause one day you’ll do this shutdown stuff again, and with REAL Backwards Compatibility backed within the current console will make the backlash significantly less and us as players happier.

    Seriously, support your history more.

    • Oh One final thing:
Fix the PS4 CMOS Online Check in.
That’s important too. I shouldn’t have to jailbreak a system to make it work after installing a new CMOS battery

  • While this is good news. I am more concerned about being able to continue playing my legally purchased digital and physical games when doing console battery replacements long after the stores have closed. My systems shouldn’t be bricked due to drm issues. Close the stores when the time comes but offer firmware or some form of support to keep end of life consoles still functioning for as long as they can.

  • Please do not discontinue ps vita messages that is all i ask sony

  • Thank you!!! I still play my PS3, PSP and PS1 Classic games and I would like to purchase more as I go.

  • common Sony bring backward compatibility of all gen playstation consoles and why not psvita games too??? i love my ps3 and i freaking love my psvita and i still have plans of buy more games on those consoles but right now i just cant but i will of buy more on psstore of course…

and sony please bring a new next gen playstation handheld console that can run ps1, ps2, ps3, psvita and why not also ps4 games??? no matter the price if the console is powerful everyone will buy it !!!

  • I take it with the PSP storefront still being closed down a person will be able to purchase PSP games via the PS Vita storefront?

    • That’s exactly what I was wanting to know too cuz I have a PSP, vita and a PS3

    • Yes, you’ll still be able to use a PS3 or PS Vita to buy PSP games. The PSP store has been closed for years, what is shutting down is in-game purchasing.

  • Jim – thanks for helping to make this possible and sharing this news. In truth though – I’ve been on PlayStation platforms since the first console back in the mid 90’s. In honesty, most PS4 gamers who generate the most income probably didn’t game back in the 90’s. I get it. Bit whilst it’s great you guys aren’t closing down the PS3 store and PSVita store just yet, come on, make the back catalogue of PS history available on PS5 and future PS platforms. There are so many amazing first and third party games that folks would pay money for and adore playing on modern consoles! Keep the old stores open, sure, but better yet, give PS5 owners and beyond access to these games! That’s the way forward. We’d love to play classics like the Insomniac Resistance trilogy, the Dead Space trilogy, the original Mirror’s Edge, etc, on PS5 with 4K 60FPS graphics!

  • Glad to hear this. What a relief!

  • PS5 and PS VITA Remote Play?!? Please make this happen!

  • Thank you to Sony and the management team for reconsidering this decision. I hope that this is the start of relationship between Sony and their fans, and the realization that we want Sony to succeed as much as you do.

  • No matter how cynical people might think this reverse of action is , it’s good that Sony have listened to the backlash of the fans and changed their minds. Just like MS did with the price hike of Gold. Just shows that if gamers speak out loud they have some power, not all the power but some.

  • What does it mean that they will stop PSP commerce functionality? Because the PSP store closed back in 2016

  • This is just moot talk. The issues here are minimal respect for:

    – developers, specially the Vita ones who saved Son’y face when you abandoned the console less than 2 years after launching it; the Vita was launched in 2011, the PS4 in 2013, will Sony close the PS4 store in 2 years? Even worse Vita developers have no solution, Sony closed the manufacturing of game cards too. There were hundreds of people putting their work in the last 4 years on Vita games for what? Did Sony warn them in a long advance?

    – customers, who should play what they want and not what Sony dictates and interests them; they’ve time after time in the last years shown they don’t give a damn about customers or games, only money, and this will bite Sony hard in the long run. A satisfied customer will always return, but not a bitter one

If this is true, bring back the web store for PS3 and Vita because the console stores are a joke. And bring back the sales and promotions, which give life and flow to the store. Just a coincidence that this kill the PS3 and Vita move started in Sony Europe in 2017ish? These would be the right steps to try to heal the damage, not small talk or half baked temporary measures, because everything will stay the same and the store will be closed definitely ASAP.

Sony is now a selfish, greedy and deaf company and amazingly totally ashamed of its past.

  • Can you guys also bring back social features or some type of access to bring more players together? The only way we can connect as a fanbase is by blogposts like these. Other than that, you’ve nuked every social feature the ps4/5 had. You’ve ruined the party system and removed ps home and playstation communities. Your main audience is multiplayer gamers, so it would be nice if we can see those features improved on and come back onto the platform, or atleast bring them back and pretend nothing happened.

  • To be able to admit a wrongdoing and to make things rights, it’s always laudable, and I’ll be the first to commend them as Sony made the right call by not doubling down on an objectively awful decision.

But on the other side, the confidence in Sony is shot: real people were affected as developers were taken by surprise and cancelled actual Vita projects with years in the making! I don’t know how devs are going to react, but I’m betting they’ll be far from happy for having been subjected to this rollercoaster of emotions.

Playstation’s brass can’t get too full of itself and go around making these kinds of mistakes. Always remember that a console is a worthless piece of tech without first, devs that create games for it and second, the customers who buy them.

  • Thank you so much!!! I love my PS Vita and I want to still play some games…

  • PlayStation 4/5 Application suggestion:

Hello, I would like suggest an application for PS4 and/or PS5 which can play local FM, AM, DAB and Internet radio available in your country (like an expanded version of the PS3 application). This could be played in the background while playing games like Spotify. The main idea is to use the PS4/PS5 to allow more people to listen to their countries radio while playing games and in general to support the local station also if there is a radio station in the next town that you can’t get on your radio it could possibly be played through the PlayStation making it the main radio system in a country as all your countries stations are in one place. This could be the start for expanding the audio applications as Spotify is the current only option. Thank you for reading my comment and I hope you consider my suggestion for a radio player application.

  • So happy to hear this, especially from a new Vita owner.

  • There should be some sort of solution to backwards compatibility on PS5, hardware based emulation may not work for PS3 games, but there has to be a software based solution. Sony has some of the best engineers and tech specialists in the world, I’m sure if time was put into it, there could be a proactive way of playing these games on the PS5, instead of the dying PS3 hardware! I know some people see backwards compatibility as a waste of time, but there are plenty of games only available on the previous generations that won’t stand the test of time due to aging hardware. There should be work put in to not only preserve these older games, but to give PlayStation users even more hours of fun being able to play games they may not have been able to play on previous generations!

  • Thanks for listening….

  • Dear Jim, thanks for this. Finally something good happened in my life. I can live another day.

  • Thanks! Now can you guys just address the c-mos battery issue that has been creating alot of buzz?

  • Great news! Does that mean we are getting the old superior web PS Store back? If you are listening to our feedback well literally no one like the new one. The PS3 and Vita store not closing is a step in the right direction, another thing that needs to be addressed is the CMOS battery in the PS3/4/5

  • Thank you sony thank you very much you have made me happy. THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • Thank you very much!

  • Genuinely, thank you for doing this.

  • YAY! Nostalgia Nerds UNITE!!

  • This was the right move.
P.S. we know you have patents for remaster / asset swap during emulation and for cpu spoofing and we know that one of the PS5’s APUs can act like a Cell SPU.
    Get emulation done already!

  • Thank you! This was the right thing to do. Now look at backwards compatibility for ps5 please.

  • Thank so much for keeping ps3 and vita stores alive. I still use my vita almost daily, and still have games and dlc I plan on purchasing on both platforms. Dont give up on a new portable either. I have always preferred Sony portables over the competition for the build quality and features, especially the vita for its backwards compatibility with psp and ps1 classics.

  • very relieved, appreciate the about-face …please get some people (gamer minded) surrounding you that would have never even let this decision be finalized in the first place, legacy is everything, to a-lot of players …again thank you for listening to the base

  • Killing Japan Studio…. RIP

Lack of any support for backwards compatiblity (PS1, PS2 & PS3). Except for a game streaming service you pay to access games most already own physically or digitally. And yes people still want to play ‘old ugly games’.

Unnecessary censorship of japanese Indie games ment for adults.

(Jim ryan please fix this ) or destroy playstation

    We love japan studio
Playstation is not An American, it’s Japan.

  • Thank you 😊

  • Now bring back the Socom confrontation downloads o the playstation store and also remaster SOCOM 2 & Combined Assault for the PS5 PLEASE!

  • Thank you for listening Jim!

  • … If anybody at Playstation is old enough to remember this username, you probably already know what I’m going to reply with:

    HAVE AN EXIT STRATEGY.

I’ve been over this hundreds, if not thousands, of times in the past, on forums, in emails, in instant messaging clients, and even in person at various conventions and expositions. Gaming, like any entertainment industry, is founded on a long-tail economic model. “Good” games are still a valuable experience years after their debut. We are far past the point where KOTOR rocketing to the top of Steam charts created a completely shocked reaction from Star Wars IP holders who had no idea how to handle a game they buried outselling everything else.

We are past the point where serious discussions on how to hand off online service to the fan-base were required. We are past the point where an Open-Source Licensing Strategy of server components should be baked into the EXIT STRATEGY from ZERO DAY. We are past the point where consumers should be able to establish their own private servers and reconfigure their Software or Hardware systems to point to those servers (or other servers) for expected services.

Fine, a lot of people bought into the the Gates/Ballmer LIE that Open-Source was a cancer and that proprietary software was the only solution. Fine, Sony has equaled the F.U.D. Gates/Ballmer spewed and matched every rotten move Microsoft has made (Intel P3 hardware and TPM vs. Sony Rootkit). Fine, Sony Movie Pictures arranged to have Sony’s best president removed for getting in the way of their bonus checks for winning political awards, that being Kaz Hirai who oversaw the PS4 launch and is widely credited with bringing Sony Pictures to heel on the MCU Spidey crossover.

We get it. The people pulling the executive strings inside Sony now are rotten scumbags who politically align with the Eco Terrorist Bill Gates (who literally owns patents on BIOWEAPONS.) We get it that nobody within Playstation likely had input on shuttering former Sony Product services.

We get it that the executive lack of leadership at Sony had no idea how to handle the backlash and just decided to revert to the status quo.

This? This isn’t the end of terrible decisions from Sony. This isn’t an Exit Strategy to hand control of consoles to the consumers who bought them.

Reading anything positive into this announcement? Is a mistake.
