Players will be able to continue to purchase games on PS3 and PS Vita.
Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.
Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.
When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.
I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.
Thank you, Jim! Although it is 14 years old, the PS3 is still a great console with a library of games that people still want to play. In the name of preservation and as an owner of a launch model PS3, please revisit PS3/PS2/PS1 (Physical & Digital) Backwards Compatibility on PS5. The machine should be able run PS1 and PS2 games without breaking a sweat, not sure if the same results can be achieved consistently with PS3 emulation. But if a group of passionate people can get good results emulating it on PC, in their free time, with no documentation, Sony surely can.
Every now and then I appreciate social media outrage
Jim, I can ask, why aren’t you pushing PS Now marketing more?
You could make another service like an Instant Game Collection.
Basically, it grants access to all the games of PS Now that can only be downloaded like the PS4 games.
Have it cheaper than PS Now.
Also have PS Now and this new game collection to include the free upgrade for PS5.
You need an answer to Game Pass right? So either make one that’s cheaper or increase the price of PS Now and include day one games.
There’s plenty of options on the table, there’s more games in PS Now to download than there are in Game Pass.
I cancelled my auto renew on PS Plus and PS Now when the original news came out. Ive been a PlayStation guy since the PS1 days. I’ve had PS Plus since almost the first month it came out. I’m glad Sony reversed this decision but ultimately they need to find a way where I can play all my stuff (within reason) on one console. I find myself more and more drawn to my PC because I can easily launch a game I bought literally 15 years ago.
Thank Jim. I would really appreciate if PlayStation store would put more PS3 games for sale monthly just like ps plus adds games monthly. PS3 iconic game library is massive and had tons of split screen co-op games such as Army of Two, Kane and Lynch etc. Please bring those games back!!! I really hope PS3 games also get remastered more just like NFS Hot Pursuit did… Thank you for your time and consideration. I will ALWAYS N FOREVER BE A PLAYSTATION FAN 💯
This is great! I just got my vita a few months back… so this is a relief! I can’t find the vita games in store, will I just have to wait for the app to update to see them again?
Thank goodness !
Now I just wish they would update the store.PlayStation.com website. I can’t access the old site and the new one doesn’t have the tabs for “New this Week” and “New this Month”.
I liked searching these with the filter “price low-high” because it made it much easier to look for all the free items (dlc, avatars, etc.) that had been added to the store recently.
If anyone knows how to do a similar search on the new website, somewhere that I haven’t noticed, please let me know !
