PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Continue Operations

Players will be able to continue to purchase games on PS3 and PS Vita.

Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.

Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.

  • Thank you, Jim! Although it is 14 years old, the PS3 is still a great console with a library of games that people still want to play. In the name of preservation and as an owner of a launch model PS3, please revisit PS3/PS2/PS1 (Physical & Digital) Backwards Compatibility on PS5. The machine should be able run PS1 and PS2 games without breaking a sweat, not sure if the same results can be achieved consistently with PS3 emulation. But if a group of passionate people can get good results emulating it on PC, in their free time, with no documentation, Sony surely can.

  • Every now and then I appreciate social media outrage

  • Jim, I can ask, why aren’t you pushing PS Now marketing more?

You could make another service like an Instant Game Collection.
Basically, it grants access to all the games of PS Now that can only be downloaded like the PS4 games.
Have it cheaper than PS Now.

Also have PS Now and this new game collection to include the free upgrade for PS5.

You need an answer to Game Pass right? So either make one that’s cheaper or increase the price of PS Now and include day one games.

There’s plenty of options on the table, there’s more games in PS Now to download than there are in Game Pass.

  • I cancelled my auto renew on PS Plus and PS Now when the original news came out. Ive been a PlayStation guy since the PS1 days. I’ve had PS Plus since almost the first month it came out. I’m glad Sony reversed this decision but ultimately they need to find a way where I can play all my stuff (within reason) on one console. I find myself more and more drawn to my PC because I can easily launch a game I bought literally 15 years ago.

  • Thank Jim. I would really appreciate if PlayStation store would put more PS3 games for sale monthly just like ps plus adds games monthly. PS3 iconic game library is massive and had tons of split screen co-op games such as Army of Two, Kane and Lynch etc. Please bring those games back!!! I really hope PS3 games also get remastered more just like NFS Hot Pursuit did… Thank you for your time and consideration. I will ALWAYS N FOREVER BE A PLAYSTATION FAN 💯

  • This is great! I just got my vita a few months back… so this is a relief! I can’t find the vita games in store, will I just have to wait for the app to update to see them again?

  • Thank goodness !

    • Now I just wish they would update the store.PlayStation.com website. I can’t access the old site and the new one doesn’t have the tabs for “New this Week” and “New this Month”.
I liked searching these with the filter “price low-high” because it made it much easier to look for all the free items (dlc, avatars, etc.) that had been added to the store recently.

If anyone knows how to do a similar search on the new website, somewhere that I haven’t noticed, please let me know !

  • Now to recall your decision to bring our “exclusives” to the competition for petty profits and get your studios working on your own platform…

Not combining online costs with the unrelated PS+ service would be the right call too, but as long as social media (popular opinion?) isn’t breathing down your necks…

  • Glad this was backtracked, but this decisions shouldn’t have been made in the first place. Just shows how out of touch executives really are. Another prime example of the comment that he made about “When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much” Where does this information come from?! Can’t really use it if you never offer it…… I used it all the time with my old 1st Gen PS3.

  • I didn’t believe keeping those stores open was needed, but it would be interesting if all the squeaky wheels did need the oil they claim. Looking forward to new games coming to PS5.

  • Thank you for keeping ps3 i love the games on my ps3

  • Awesome— does that mean the Rock Band 3 music store will also be coming back up? I mean, you warned us about this, saying we had a couple months, then just killed the music store without a word. Now you’ve realized there was money there. So, would you like our money? If you do, just re-up the Rock Band music stores. All we want to do is buy more stuff from you. Let us give you more money!

(Before anyone says anything, had the PS4 been backwards compatible with all our ps3 music games—rather than being limited to one single compatible game meaning we’d still have to hang on to our ps3 to play anything else, and, as I’m a Piano player, and RB4 left the piano behind, we’d still be playing RB3 more than anything else—well, we would have already upgraded)

  • Thank you but we need the PSP store too! Don’t kill it!

    • The PSP store is already dead. What’s going away is PSP in-game transactions. PSP games will still be up on the PS3/Vita stores.

  • Thanks. A lot.
It’s all I have to say.

  • Able to find a solution?…ha like it was extremely hard to just keep the Stores open right?…and “I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy” really?….lol jimbo a lotta people seem to buy into your crap by the comments I see here but doesn’t take a genius to know that you don’t give a damn. The backlash must’ve been huge to make you guys backtrack on this stupid decision, maybe now you realize the power of the community that feeds you money and I’m not talking about the casuals who only buy your new stuff.

Anyway really glad about this,I knew that only a big backlash could make this happen but honesly didn’t expect it to happen…great news!!

    PS3 for life!!!!

    • BTW while you’re at it fix the PS3 Store so it shows the “Purchase” button again. You know…show that you care ha,it’s beyond pathetic to have your Store broken in such state even if it’s the Store of a system you don’t care about anymore.

  • If you could make the a vita and ps3 digital playable on the ps5 this wouldn’t be an issue. Thanks for leaving them up.

  • THANK YOU!

I’m not going to assume this was much more than a PR move, but regardless you guys listened to your fans and corrected a decision that would have very much upset your customers, so regardless of the motivation, I say good job and again THANK YOU!

  • Omg! Thank you so much Jim! I’m still stuck on the PS3 because I’ve been too poor to afford a new PlayStation 4 or 5…
I’m glad I will still be able to use the store when I have a small sum of funds to purchase dlcs and whatnot.

    • While im no Jim Ryan *checks lottery ticket* i am a fellow PS3 owner like you.
Enjoy your games and your bluray movies, friend :)

  • Mr. Ryan (and rest of PSN staff for all store fronts) A BIG thank you from a PS2,PS3, PS4 and Vita owner. I’m grateful you recognize and care for the value of our classics. We will support you to continue finding ways to keep our PS Collection safe, while we (when i can find one) dive into the new world of PS5! Cheers :)

  • Thank you so much!!! I love my PS Vita and PS3!!!!

  • AWESOME GOD BLESS Y’ALL.

  • Thank you for continuous support for my beloved ps3’s. They are my current main machines for alot of fun and many memories. And thanks to all of the fans of this wonderfull machine. To playstation it self : much appreciate it from years to come. Thank you from Portugal.

  • Thanks but… What about the multiplayer servers of PS3, PSvita and PSP???? Regards

  • I mean, I dont care, I’m sure sony and playstation dont care, but there at least 6 people out there -which they dont even own a ps3- who burned the internet for this … so I guess good for them.

At least thank you sony for listening to fans and waste money.

  • I am so happy about this!! Finally our voices were heard
    Thank you, Sony

  • Dear Jim Ryan and the upper management at Sony.

Upon reflection of my short comment, I want to share the following. I still hold true my gratitude for keeping open the PS3 and Vita stores for the foreseeable future. This comes with an authentic acceptance that I know little about maintaining a online digital store but believing that I understand enough that the upkeep must be more costly when those stores are locked to systems that are relegated to the past. A good number of those systems may be at a garage sale or at a used section of a game store or in a closet somewhere. So, it is a treat, to an extent,, that you still let those of us who still use PS3 and Vita systems to consider new purchases of games we missed or games we are not interested in but would like to get for a younger gamer in our family. I for one have passed down my PS3 to my 7yr-old son, who as of this writing has finished all 3 original Ratchet and Clank games and loves them more than the Mario 3D All-star game I got him for the holidays. When I heard the store was closing I jumped the gun and bought the Sly games just in case they were something of interest for my son to play months or years from now. But I digressed.

The obvious answers that we gamers have requested (with varying degrees of understanding of how this could actually be accomplished)is to move those games to a single unified store and have PS5 be fully backwards compatible. Again, we request with varying degrees of understanding on how this could be done or if it could be done. We, nonetheless, request you try. It may turn out that we don’t need all these old games and that you may be absolutely right. I, however, think it would serve as and build good will to explain to us why it can’t happen or if it can, to have you share a bit of the roadmap to get you to it being a reality. We ask you communicate with us. Speaking of…

The announcement that Sony would be closing the PS3, Vita and PSP was indeed a concern but to a good number of us it went beyond just cutting off ties to the past. It was a signal, among many others that Sony feels cold and distant, as well as sterile. That it is forgetting the past that shaped it. We also worry that the new focus of Sony portrayed by reports seem to be entirely focused on over depending on what works at the risk of franchise fatigue. This is a shame because the company has done great things that sometimes get overlooked or forgotten quickly within social media. The Play at Home initiative is being overshadowed by the Bend studio story. The good selection of free of charge games each month on Plus gets overlooked because we read or hear stories on how studios get shattered or reassigned (which I’m sure happens all the time in the industry in general).

Meanwhile, Sony is quiet. Shows a trailer here and there and then silence.

Anyway, know that we gamers watch, play and listen enough to care. Even if we don’t have stocks in Sony as a corporation. We hope that management do their best and always jump at the chance to share a bit of what goes on inside and how they plan to keep us invested.

    My best.

Looking forward to playing on the PS5 when I can finally get my hands on one.

    • This. A thousand times this. Please get our feedback in the future BEFORE these decisions are made! We’re trusting you when we buy the games and the systems that they’ll work. Don’t betray that trust!

  • Good reversal, but can you also start doing sales on these platforms again?

  • This was a awesome thing to see on my drawer, and a great decision for them to make. It will only strengthen the loyalty of playstation gamer’s, In my opinion because it did for me.

  • Now bring back MAG, Socom and Killzone.

  • Can you still buy psp games on the ps3 and ps vita store after the psp store closes?

  • We appreciate you listening to us and recognizing our love for all games, old and new. Thank you for giving POWER TO THE PLAYERS!

  • The right decision. Thank you.

  • Thanks now if you can maybe made some of our PS3 games download able to be download to our PS4 it be great..

  • Thank you! Vita Island lives on!

  • Kept it to the main ones I wanted. Picked up Metal Gear Solid 1 last week. Was planning to get God Of War 1 & 2, and Final Fantasy VII & VIII. Good to know I have what looks like oodles of more time. Going to pick them up in case they eventually backtrack on this and decide to kill it.

  • Oh great, I hope adding back the PS3/PSVITA section to the Playstation Store Website is next on the list…

  • I felt pretty kinda happy about this for ps store remain open to my ps3 console.

  • I still need to install the dlc to my ps3 games from the ps store.

  • Thank you for leaving the store up for PS3 and the Vita. Now you need to fix this CMOS battery issue .

  • PS3 – Vita Deals? I need to finish my wish list

  • Best decision ever made for gamers.

  • I’m happy it’s staying open. But, I’m constantly running into errors when I try to install software on my PSP via PS3. I’ve done two step verification, and I get one of three errors:

    80029509
    80029721
    80023017

When I try to install a game via USB mode while connected to PSN.

I hope you address this and fix it soon. I’ve got more money to spend on the PSN store, and want to be able to play what I spend my hard-earned money on.

    Thank you.

  • Good news, as i owner of ps2, ps3, ps4 , i continue purchases from ps2 to ps3 and so…knowing that “online” content will be long alive as far the PS be working fine.
When i know about the close for ps3, i decided to not buy anymore any playstation products… may be my way of thiking will change as sony change his mind too.

I work in a ISP engi position, i know that you (may) keep all content on CDNs and should taking this in count for your capacity panning… there is no “we shutdown the content for your better experience on new products” that´s a commercial lie, you just want to invest in your current clients… big mistake.
Customers are more smart that you think…

“The Customer: Someone that indirectly pays for your food, clothes, and vacations. Be nice to them.”

  • While I appreciate that the criticism was heard, it’s just too little too late. Sony already cashed in on the influx of people buying games while they still can and have made it very difficult to buy games for the platforms they planned to axe. The whole “nobody would want to play old games” sentiment coming from Jim Ryan just shows that the company is lacking sound management right now.

  • How do you check your game hours

  • Wow that is much better now Playstation world never leave it stays forever and ever thank you so much

  • Soo when are you going to fix the CMOS for the PS3 PS4 and PS5? Because I wont be getting a PS5 if its just another ticking timebomb that will bar me from my games. you have to work harder on this Jim!

  • Fix the CMOS on Ps3 Ps4 and PS5!!!
