PS5 April Update brings new storage options and social features

First major PS5 console update lets you store PS5 games on USB extended storage, share gameplay across PS5 and PS4 consoles, and more.

The first major system software update for the PS5 console is rolling out globally tomorrow, and it’s packed with new features and improvements. Our team is passionate about enhancing your experience on PlayStation in every possible way, so here’s a glimpse at what’s coming for PS5, PS4, and PlayStation App:

PS5 Storage Expansion and Management

  • Store PS5 Games on Compatible External USB Drives.* With this feature, you can now transfer your PS5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.
  • Because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra high-speed SSD, PS5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage. PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. In addition, you can select which game modes you want to install (such as campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.

As previously announced, the PS5 console will support storage expansion via M.2 drives in the future. We’re currently working on this feature and will keep you posted with any updates on PlayStation Blog.

New Social Features for PS4 and PS5 Consoles

  • Cross-generation Share Play. PS4 and PS5 players can now Share Play together while chatting in parties. This means PS5 console users can let their friends on PS4 consoles view their game screen, or even try out the PS5 games through Share Play, and vice versa. Options include the ability to share your screen with a friend, pass your controller virtually to a friend, or pass a second controller virtually to play co-op games together.
  • Request to Join Game Session. A selection of your friends’ joinable game sessions will now appear on both PS5 and PS4 consoles, allowing for more gameplay opportunities together. The “Request to Join” option also serves as a shortcut to sending a game invite, reducing the time it takes for you to get into games with friends. Through the Privacy Settings menu, you can modify who can interact with you through parties, games and messages.

Enhanced Control and Personalization Options for PS5 Consoles

  • Improved Game Base. The Game Base menu has been improved for quicker access to important content and features. You can now easily switch between Parties and Friends to start chatting with your existing parties or see what each of your online friends is up to. In addition, you can turn notifications on or off for each of the parties you’re in.

  • Disable Game Chat or Adjust Players’ Volume. You can now quickly disable in-game chat, which turns off your mic audio and the voice audio of other players. Additionally, you can easily adjust the individual voice chat volume of other players in the same chat so you don’t have to ask your friends to lower or increase their mic volume each time.
  • Game Update Pre-download. Once it’s enabled by developers, title updates for games will pre-download to your console if the “automatic updates” setting is enabled and your console is on or in rest mode. This will let you start playing the latest version of a game immediately after the update’s release.
  • Customize Game Library. With the ability to hide games from view, it’s now easier to find content and personalize your view of your game library.
  • Screen Zoom. You can now adjust the magnification of the screen to suit your preference from the Settings menu.
  • New Trophy Settings and Stats Screen. The level of trophies that results in automatic capture of a screenshot or video clip can now be customized — so you can now choose to only capture and save images/videos of moments when you earn higher-grade trophies, like Gold or Platinum. We’re also introducing a new player Trophy Stats screen, where you can check out the summary of your trophy level and status at a glance.

New Features for PlayStation App

We’re also introducing a myriad of new features for PlayStation App to make it easier than ever to connect with your console experience remotely. Recently, we introduced the ability to save products in a wishlist, get notifications when your friends are online, and change your console online status. In the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out even more, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store. You can download PlayStation App for free from Google Play and the App Store.

We’re only scratching the surface of the many updates and improvements we’ve made across PS5, PS4, and PS App, so check them out and let us know what you think!

  • I hope in future you also add the ability to transfer game saves to usb storage.

  • nice . beautiful

  • maybe somethink about this “coil whine” fix by update, idk

  • Will this fix rest mode issues with an external ssd hooked up?

  • – Folders

    – On the PS App messaging screen, add the “played together” tab when searching for players

  • How about an internet browser?
    Folders?
    Themes?

  • I want to be able to play warzone at my 120 fps your system says its capable please work on this thank you….

  • Please change the party system back to how it was, i loved that i used to be able to jump in people’s party and say hi but now i cant unless they directly add me to the chat 😢

  • Still no M.2 drive support?! You are kidding me!

  • Glad to be able to customize our game library finally! It’s such a disorganized mess at the moment. I have hundreds of games and only play a fraction of them. It will be nice to organize them and get rid of tiles for games I don’t even have installed.

  • I hope they fixed the random crashes. Like I got a 6tb external hard connected to my ps5 for my ps4 games.

    • The crashes are not really random, it’s whenever you use rest mode or the restart option from the menu. Very rarely will games “delete themselves” by just saying “installed” without you being able to play them without doing the “unplug external Hd, redownload to hard drive, plug in external Hd, select which one to delete” trick.

  • Please change the UI, it’s the only thing that I really don’t like on ps5, so much useless information on screen and everything that matters is hidden somewhere, it’s a total downgrade from ps4 and even ps3 XMB

  • And where is the full patch list, why not post that here…

  • What about being able to play 4k @ 120hz + hdr on the samsung tvs that aren’t doing so?

  • Did you guys determine if the Lan cable disconnected bug a system software issue?

  • Samsung said it’s a ps5 issue and would be included in the March update. There was no March update and no mention of it here :( well disappointed.

My cheaper Sony TV can do 4k/hdr/120hz so my partner is happy but frustrating for me as my colours keep changing.

  • Please Sony give us backward compatibility feature so I can play my PS1, PS2 and PS3 games via games disc or digital download.

  • Fix the hdr 120hz 4K issue. This is one of the advertising sale points of Ps5. At a minimum publicly address it even if Sony isn’t at fault. Rumor on street is the issue is Ps5 related not Samsung tv in my case. I have a brand new Samsung qled and it isn’t able to produce the picture it should on Ps5. Many of us have been patient, but it has been 5 months so now I think it is fair to ask what the heck is going on with this issue. Ignoring it is going to really start agitating your customers.

  • all exciting updates!

would LOVE to see an update that allows for party chat audio to be pushed through TV/Speakers. I play games with friends often, and my partner usually watches, and enjoys being a part of the conversation, or at the very least, getting the full context of my otherwise nonsense rambling.

    • It is pushed through the tv speakers. It’s set like that by default. Don’t wear a headset and leave the mic on on the controller and join the chat room.

  • What about adding in Themes so we can truly setup our PS5s the way we wish cause have several themes from my time on PS4 would love to use on my PS5. Just food for thought.

  • Well this has made me completely loose faith in sony. Thanks for nothing

  • The only thing this update is missing is the streaming because the streaming absolutely sucks on ps5 never had issue with ps4 so they really should have updated that to

  • I would appreciate if there is an option added where I can send screenshots from my ps5 to the cloud (since I have storage on the cloud because of PS+) and then add the ability to download pictures from the cloud to the phone.

This would make the process of sharing screenshots not be as limited as today.

  • We need access to PS5/4 screenshare from Playstation App ASAP !!!

  • But can I put my console in rest mode yet?… I’d like for it to not crash anymore…

    • Yeah. I do it all the time. Been doing it since day one.

    • This guy who says “he does it all the time” is either lying, not using an external HD, or leaving out that his external HD crashes every time he uses it.

  • Was ready to buy a NVMe but this just lets us store the games on a external USB. Nice feature and good way to store games. Happy we can SHAREplay with PS4 users. Over all seems like a great update.

  • Please allow me to use my Astro c40 controller on ps5 games. Spent too much money on it for it not to be allowed on ps5 games.

  • Good update not going to lie . 2 things I suggest is getting the back paddles out for the ps5 dual sense controller and fixing the problem to having certain monitors another to get 120 hz refresh rate

  • Hey my console will not save my 2k21 correctly. If I try to save it to cloud storage it deletes the content. Will this fix the issues with 2k21 saves

  • Please please please MAKE IT CLEAR IF A GAME NATIVELY SUPPORTS 3D AUDIO in the playstation store. I don’t like the 3D audio engines 7.1 channel virtualization, it sounds bad to me, only those that natively support 3D audio sound good with 3D audio switched on. But its very difficult to find out officially if a game does support 3D audio, I shouldn’t have to boot a game and then flick between 3D audio on and off back and forth trying to work out if it supports 3D audio natively by ear. It’s a ridiculous situation, please please make it clear with a note or a symbol or whatever if the game natively supports 3D audio on the game page!

  • Please make 1440p resolution a priority!!

  • probably most excited that i can adjust individual players voice chat volume. i have a friend that constantly blasts his podcasts

  • Please add Discord integration. At least audio chat. Cross-play it’s currently really painful because of the lack of a cross-platform chat feature.

  • The move to extended storage is a welcome feature, but I’d also like to see the following changes to the System Software:
An option for the home button hold or tap functions to be swapped.
Improve the response speed of the home button.
The option to show more items on the home screen, as we had with PS4
Pin the Trophy list to the home menu
Fix the bug where uninstalling a game will move a blank icon to the left of the home screen

Basically, just bringing back the PS4 UI would be nice…

  • Now if only we could join parties and chat from the pc.

  • Hey Sony. Here’s your daily reminded to bring backwards compatibility for PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP and Vita to the PS5. It shouldn’t even be a debate at this point, it’s entirely doable so get working on it asap!

  • just bring back the old ps4 party system…why can´t i see my friends partys when i´m not in a party group with them? why is there no “messages” button? i have to check all kinds of partys for new messages this so dumb….also still no VRR support, no Auto HDR Off toggle, what happend to my friends social feed? i don´t even see when they unlock a new trophy or anything i feel complete isolated on ps5

  • I still cannot understand why so many clicks are needed to access messages? Why this isn’t an option in ps5 quick menu?

  • what happens when you plug a drive that stored both PS4 and PS5 games back to PS4? will it still work on PS4?

  • Can we get folders? Its bothersome having to go to the game library to find a game that I have downloaded but doesn’t appear in the main home screen.

  • Sounds all good! But still eagerly awaiting features such as: M2 slot storage, VRR
Also, please fix rest mode crashing – forums are still full of such issues. I’ve also disabled rest mode on my unit, since it would crash every couple of days..

  • Where is the 1440p upgrade. What are you waiting for? Come on Sony

  • I would love to see the “always on HDR” problem fixed.

  • Woot. Thank you, Sony. May you blessed by your higher self.

  • Would be really nice to watch records of my gameplays and then for example share it to my friends on Facebook or other channels.
Currently, I would have to upload it to youtube and then share it. That is not very convenient.

  • This is great! But what about the VRR and graphics updates and frame rate etc?

  • Glad we get this. Would love them to allow multiple usb hard drive or bigger ones. The 8tb limitation is a limitation now with back catalog of PS4 games and PS5 games being HUGE

  • Yeah PlayStation thinks they’re on top of their game with the PS4 & PS5… But in reality they are gonna destroy PS3 when customers can no longer buy DLC for their games starting in July. That’s going to be the worst update in PlayStation history, since they took away online features from PS2. 💀 (They may take away online features for PS3 One day as well)

  • Nice to see these features coming!

1440p output support would be a welcome bonus, just saying!

  • Still no VRR, no expanded storage even though SSDs that meet the spec are out in the wild and have been for nearly 6 months, closing down Japanese studios that made the brand and polarizing developers. I have a PS5 but what’s are y’all doing???
