PlayStation 5: Launch Day Ordering Update

Launch-day sales will be online-only this year, so please plan ahead.

Hi all – the launch of the PlayStation 5 console on November 12 (or November 19, depending on your region) is almost upon us! In the interest of keeping our gamers, retailers, and staff safe amidst COVID-19, today we are confirming that all day-of launch sales will be conducted through the online stores of our retail partners.

No units will be available in-store for purchase on launch day (November 12 or November 19, depending on your region) – please don’t plan on camping out or lining up at your local retailer on launch day in hopes of finding a PS5 console for purchase. Be safe, stay home, and place your order online.

Gamers who have pre-ordered for pick-up at their local retailer should still be able to do so at their designated appointment time, under the retailer’s safety protocols. Please confirm the details with your local retailer.

A special thank you to our entire community for your continued support this year. Here’s to the next generation of gaming!

  • why cant we just pay for it now and it be shipped when its available? that way theres a better chance of getting one to people fairly. i love Playstation ive had almost all of them but today was a huge let down.

  • So disappointed! Tried to purchase all day at various retailers with no luck. Sony, please manufacture more, increase supply so people can purchase the console. It is ridiculous that the only source is e-bay with prices from $800 to $8000. Yes, $8000! When will the next release frenzy occur? Thanks a lot Sony!

  • This Launch day for the PS5 was horrible. Tried at 12, 3, 6 and 9 pm. And 2 times I had it all the way to place order and it wouldnt let me. Then it wipe away your order then stick it in your Save For Later, and say out of stock. I’m just so disgusted and disappointed about this launch day for the PS5. Looks like I’ll get one in 2021….MAYBE!!!!

    • I’m probably going to buy a high powered PC now. This pretty much made my decision a lot easier. So disgusted with this process.

  • I guys say order online I been stalking all the websites and still nothing

  • Y’all are trash. How do you not make enough units. I’ve been trying to order one for months. Trash, just straight trash.

  • I am disabled. Gaming is something that is an extreme joy to me even though I have a limited amount of time I can play a week. This was the first time I was going to be able to buy a system on launch day. It was very exciting to me. Some of you come in here and are critical about others being disappointed (which it is disappointing and no amount of being ugly to us will change that) but, when it is all said and done that doesn’t change how this all was handled. Very poorly. I am extremely disappointed in how Song handled this launch to the point that I might be moving on to another gaming system. I don’t mind buying online. I have to avoid stores because I am immune compromised. However, having one in your checkout and getting ready to pay for it then it’s gone? It’s like what I read on Reddit, thinking of one of those Black Friday videos we have all seen. I was at the checkout, I had my merchandise and some fat f$&k comes and takes it out of my cart. Extremely disappointed Sony. Get your poo together.

  • I’m upset. Two months ago I put in and got vacation approved so that I could camp out for the PS5. Now that the day has come and gone, I spent all night and all day refreshing web pages to no avail. I like dancing, but all the dance floors are closed. My favorite restaurant is closed. Movie theaters are closed. Bars are closed. Everything I spend my free time doing in public is gone. The last thing I looked forward to this year was getting a PS5. This isn’t just a simple-minded man-child throwing a fit. I am just doing everything I can to get some sort or normalcy. I live alone. I work alone. You’re lying if you tell me I’m giving your grandma COVID by waiting in line for a PS5.

  • My attempts to purchase a PS5 began last night around 9pm Pacific or 12 eastern. When I could get the item in my cart which happened multiple times, I would not be able to actually purchase the product. I kept getting errors. This happened at Walmart, BestBuy and Target. At other times I would see the product and be forced into a devils bargain of choosing to pay through the nose for convenience, many sites are having it marked up far above retail by people who had purchased it just to resell. Websites like Amazon, Ebay and Stock X had the PS5 going from $850 up to $1900 and I can confirm that the $1900 one sold on Amazon because as of this writing they are showing no PS5 stock. Other sites had abusive package deals. On New Egg you had to buy it in a bundle with games or an extra controller and on Gamestop they bundled in NBA 2k and Spiderman Into a console bundle and forced you to purchase that way or not at all. I say all that to say this. We the consumer make a choice to support your platform as long as it supports us with great product. I would argue however that the decision made around distribution of this product although coming from a place of good intentions in the age of covid 19 is devoid of good results. We are being ripped off by corporate greed in the form of companies you work with taking advantage of the situation and means to upsell us and we are also having individuals use the circumstance of online only to use bots with scripts to purchase copies for resale at 4 times the original price. It would be nice if considering all of these facts you revised your decision to do online only sales. 1. The world is opening with or without you and we will be shopping in stores like Wallmart or Target for food and clothing anyway so there is no reason those places should have an online only distribution. Other locations as well should just be required to have covid guidelines in place which all of them do anyway to maintain social distancing. 2. Supporting the customer is not only frankly the right thing to do it is also the profitable thing to do. Do you think that person that spent 1900 on a PS5 console with one controller and no games wouldn’t have rather paid for a console and then spend the other 1300 (after taxes) on games and accessories that you made for him or her and their family to have fun playing or interacting with cameras, VG goggles , etc….I think the answer is clear. You are throwing away profit to bolster a system that does not benefit you or the consumer. That is not responsible it is in fact the opposite. I hope we can take the events of the day as a lesson learned and attempt to do things differently moving forward. Here is my suggestion. Take a tally of what your distribution will be for the year and use it to come up with a production estimate you can then divide among your retailers as a supply list. Then allow said retailers to place reservations for systems and collect full payment for them upfront. I know plenty of people would be happy to pay upfront and have a firm or even estimated date of when the item they purchased would arrive and not need to do any further interaction. This would allow you to maintain consideration for Covid 19 and by pre booking reservations people could be contacted individually for purchase they could not abuse online botting and the reservation could be limited to one per person making anyone attempting resale have a more difficult go of it. It would ensure social distancing would be followed and allow people to actually purchase the product in a fair manner. In addition if I were you I would not allow companies to sell your product during a shortage in bundle deals that are not consumer friendly if they refused I wouldn’t supply them with the product. We ultimately are supporting you and your product not them and their shady business practices. I think doing something along these lines would go a long way to improving the customer service experience and making it more agreeable to all. Thanks for the good games and good times. I know it is hard and you do not often get appreciation as much as consternation but I for one appreciate all the hard work that goes into what you do and thank you for all the long hours and hard work. I just want it to be appreciated by the fans and not manipulated into abusing them by people taking advantage of a poorly designed market strategy. Stay safe and thanks for taking the time to read this.

  • I literally try all day to buy a PS5, but was not lucky enough, When could I be able to try again?

  • worst part is playstation most likely does not care about the consumers and all these complaints… They got paid anyway, even if it was “bots” that bought them out and someone else is profiting more off of the ps5 then they are. huge disservice to your loyal customers.

  • so is the RTX 3080 available? does anyone know?

  • What time will there b more ps5s

  • This launch sucked! I have forever been a PlayStation fan and this was the first time I could get it at release. I been up and at it all day trying to find one with no success.

  • Sorry but what did you call this event today? The best way of describing it would be a complete waste of time and energy. Not a single platform could handle the situation. You basically encourage price gouchers by having a release like today’s. I have been with Sony playstation since the beginning and have to say that I can’t remember a more disappointing time (it’s not like Sony hasn’t tried before). Out of 300 people on my friends list 1 was lucky enough to buy a PS5. Bots buying huge amounts and now you can buy it on eBay for $2000. Sorry but this is not acceptable. Why didn’t Sony implement anything from preventing things like that? Having a lottery would have been better. At least it would have been fair.

  • I would purchase mine when Sony release PS5 Slim model. I’m still enjoying my PS4 backlog games. So I can wait.

  • Can one of you guys confirm that if we ordered a PS5 through Sony Direct on Launch Day, can we expect that they’re going to ship the PS5 by this weekend or next week?

  • I was told the ps5 was only $500 but now when I check it’s $650 like if you want people to buy it at least drop the price back to $500

  • what time will it be released on nov 13th?

    • Pretty sad a lot of the units sold were to ppl who prolly couldn’t even turn on a Ps5, and here we are the working class who have been waiting months for this day.

  • Really nice they make a system for ppl to buy and make a profit on, instead of letting ppl buy it who actually are gonna play it…At least Xbox didn’t tease ppl with a release every 3 hours for a bot to buy more.

  • Well this would go over a lot better if scalpers did not buy all of the systems and are now selling them dor triple the price. Smh what a shame.

  • Yup, I did plan ahead… and now i just wasted 24hrs refreshing every web site. So the way i see it you now owe me a credit for waisting my time. About $650.00

  • Are they being sold on PlayStation Direct today ?

  • I tried soooo hard to buy PS5 on launch day. I made a video recapping the whole experience.

  • This “launch” was the biggest farce I’ve ever witnessed. I’m an older gamer, been a hardcore gamer since the days of Zork, lol. I’m also a die hard PS fan. I’ve been involved in many, many console and even platform launches over the years, and this one takes the cake. Having multiple sites up, whom all of which were supposed to have stock, I only saw 2 sites actually show the ps5 available for a moment or two, and those sites crashed or errored out when attempting to go from the cart to checkout. I’m saddened by Sony’s disregard for their fans and their due diligence to provide at least adequate stock for their next gen release as well as providing functioning avenues in which their fans could buy one. It amazes me how many people were ready to purchase an expensive console, cash in hand, and were just not able to do so. C’mon Sony… you really need to step up your game to bounce back from this debacle.

  • i still can’t find one

  • This has been the worst release yet of the new system. And I completly agree with Johnnycash69. These stupid bots that there using to buy these things up within 1 to 2 minutes of being listed is just plain outrageous. I had an incident just yesterday the things were gone in only 10 seconds. Common now seriously. There are alot of POED people over this issue. And to what, put them on freakin ebay for triple of what they cost is just plain ridiculous. There are committed playstation fans out here that just want to enjoy the new tech. And going on amazon or anyplace else online to find one is just plain unheard of. Ive checked every since midnight of the release date and they are non existent. Quite honestly with being the biggest release yet of the new system and with this stupid pandemic going on alot more of these systems should have been created.

  • Thanks Sony for using FedEx which is holding my system hostage thanks for having restrictions that can’t be lifted so I can’t even pick it up from the fedex facility and have to lose not one but two days of work because somebody has to physically except and sign for it thanks

    • I personally called FedEx and they told me they don’t have the system or package yet. Contact Sony. I tried that also to no avail

  • The only people getting ps5’s are bootleggers and youtubers, they have like 5 or more of them , and us regular people cant even get one .

  • Spent several hours yesterday, unsuccessfully trying to purchase the PS5 for my Son.
It is unacceptable that you treat Customers to such a horrendous experience. I mean, you had enough time to come up with a plan to prevent this fiasco.
If you don’t have capacity or the correct amount of units, then don’t fool customers into this “Launch” nonsense.

  • This is such bull crap considering the facts that on launch day nobody was able to buy one online at all, bot’s brought up all the units leaving a massive number of people without, I feel like we have been extremely disrespected as loyal gamer, especially myself who has been gaming for over 30 years and have been a loyal PlayStation fan since the very 1st PlayStation, what a rip off.

  • I received invitation. I was able to pre-order, you debited my account and the system isn’t even on the way a day late.

Tried Gering in touch with some kind of customer support but nothing. Any help please.

  • I love PlayStation, always been a fanboi. I carried over my Xbox name to PlayStation and had it for a while before psn banned me for blablabla then made another account verypolitepony and got banned after being inactive for months on end. Long story short, I want to give you FULL PRICE for your new state of the art console. I WANT TO PAY YOU. Read this and understand the people will pay whatever your price is for the newest console. Just make it available for everyone for Christ sake we all know you have enough consoles, why limit the sell of the product and drive your year long some people are lifetime PlayStation users away from SIMPLY not allowing us to pay you for your product. Instead the consoles are being bought up by computer programs that crash websites and cash out with all the supplies available for the general public. If ANYTHING!!!!! Make it limited to one per customer and BAN multiple purchases of the item JUST LIKE ON YOUR WEBSITE!!! Make everyone play by your rules, if you won’t or can’t you will continue to loose long term users. Me personally had the ps5 in my Walmart cart 4x. At EVERY drop time I was no more than milliseconds away from confirming my purchase and the system bots swooped the pride and joy away for the next 12 hours.. The fact you are NOT limiting every other provider of the PlayStation sell to one per customer is horrendously atrocious in my opinion. But your making millions and I’m not so you know what is best in the long run I just hope you give the actual people a fighting chance to purchase the system many of us have been anxiously waiting for. If you just have a supply of one per person available for more that 2 seconds there may not be so much hate mail flooding the internet on every social media platform and blog know in every language. I will pray for you tonight sony. Pray you come to your senses.
Sincerely, a person for the people ❤️

  • I’ve been a Sony fan since day 1 and have purchased every system at launch since the PS1, so I hate to leave this type of comment, but this has to have been the biggest failure of a launch I have ever seen. I totally understand the concern with covid, people need to realize it’s not just about them, you have the possibility of getting others sick too. Hospitals in my state are reaching max capacity, they’re even considering opening local venues to house patients. Peak flu season is just starting to hit. We still don’t know enough about the virus to say, it hasn’t even been a full year yet since people started getting infected. However, it doesn’t seem like Sony has done anything to work with sellers to combat automated bots for online purchasing. It’s pretty much impossible to place an order on any website right now as soon as they go available. Even if you refresh the page right as it’s in stock, it’s impossible to checkout before they become out of stock because the website just crashes. Even if it’s just regular customers purchasing, you should have delayed the launch until you could better handle the demand. This is the best lineup of games you guys have put out on launch, and now I and so many others that dealt with this issue have to avoid spoilers that will ruin our experience. Sony needs to address this issue with the public better, it feels like you guys don’t care. I feel like every company that carries consoles need to address this. Fans are getting tired of seeing these items sold for triple the cost on eBay.

  • Okay you guys say to plan ahead. Walmart restocked ps5s four times yesterday. I hit confirm order within literally 2 minutes of them being restocked each of those 4 times and still could not buy one. Same thing in sept 17th. Hit confirm order, website crashes, and takes the ps5 out of my cart. How is this a successful launch? There are hundreds of ps5s being sold on eBay for close to $2,000. A scalper can buy a dozen ps5s yet most of us can’t buy one? And then you have the audacity to say that “play has no limits” when barely anyone even gets to try? Seriously??? This entire launch has been a huge middle finger to your fans especially one like myself who’s been with you since ps1. You guys messed up big time. Online only. What a joke.

    • Online only would have worked far better with a round robin ordering system and anti-bot measures in place… instead I experienced the exact same issues you did with all 4 of the Walmart launch day windows.

  • This is the first time I could get a launch release console. Unable to find available anywhere since it was announced Sony would notify when sales would begin and retail processed immediately after the video and sales were full within minutes. The desire to get the unit quickly not only goes with exclusives but to see how much better current play is improved in sight, sound, feel. The haptic feedback on the controller is an experience I look forward to along with the amazing load times between screens! I missed out on the original Playstation but I still have my 2,3 & 4 consoles and the games I love on them.

  • What about all the people that signed up for the pre order direct on your email list Sony? what are you going to do for them? the real gamers, not price gouging scalpers. i hope you do something soon.

  • was online waiting to get in store the chimes went off and i was sent back to end of the line. People cant just sit around all day long to be thrown out.

  • I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed in a company before. Sony representative, if you are reading this, please hear what people are saying. Your supply chain logistics and e-commerce failed a lot of people on the launch date.

I don’t think it’s about not getting a PS5 on launch date. I never expected to get one because of high demand. And it’s not about not getting to play a new console and games on it because there are plenty of other things to do with my time. It’s a deeper issue.

At the start of Covid, I went to purchase my nephew a Nintendo Switch. I sat in frustration for months because no store had it in stock but plenty of online market places did. The catch? The prices were inflated at 100% above retail price. Sticking to my guns, I decided not to give an inch to the wartime profiteering mindset. It took months of searching and work to finally find a device at a retailer for a price that the manufacturer recommended. All to make the little guy a little happier. Fast forward to the case of Sony and the PS5 and I think, “surely Sony can do better than Nintendo?” Unfortunately, Sony you didn’t. You’re just as competent as Nintendo in this regard.

You have deep pockets and obvious technological leverage in multiple fields. Was it so hard to set up a latency queue system that enabled one purchase from any IP address and just sell the console yourself? Couldn’t you have set up a ticketing system to ensure people that wanted a product could get one EVENTUALLY? Why can’t you just take orders for the product and make people wait for theirs to arrive?

I’m not talking about the launch date, I’m talking about the next 6 months. If people knew they could get their hands on the device at retail price, even if it took months, they probably wouldn’t resort to buying one from some rando on the internet.

Check eBay or Facebook marketplace. Your consoles are on resale the same day as the launch date at prices as high as $1800 (highest I’ve seen). Yes, people have the right to resell things, but because you have given no assurances, the scalpers will likely find other ways to continue this malpractice of inflated prices because YOU aren’t doing anything about it.

You can label this system as a want and not a need. You are totally right about that, it isn’t a need. But it isn’t the needs but the WANTS that keep companies like Sony in the black.

Sony, please step up and take ownership of your launch and console. Try to live up to your own slogan, “play has no limits”. Because right now, I see nothing but limits.

  • Hi is mustafa franklin so Walmart app won’t lets buy the ps5 online it crash and glitches I don’t know why people buy it so fast can please help me found one I really wanna know yesterday all the ps5 sold out please help me

  • Hi is mustafa franklin so app won’t lets buy the ps5 online it crash and glitches I don’t know why people buy it so fast can please help me found one I really wanna know yesterday all the ps5 sold out please help me

  • Even if you’re only doing online orders cant you at least increase you output? Countless people are litterally begging to pay you 400 to 500 bucks a head, we’ve got the money, do you have the product?

  • sony you really screw up this time you only put out just a few ps5 so people would rush to by but you for got about the xbox people would buy if they could not get the ps5

  • Tried every launch day for a month to score ANY model, can’t beat all the scalper bots. This hurts the actual gamers.

  • I have all the PS5 accessories but no console, actually considering returning everything and just keep playing my PS4 Pro.

I am beyond angry that scalper bots do this stuff. Same thing happened when Nvidia launch the 3080RTX, bots bought them all and ended up on eBay for 2x-3x the price.

  • Sony should send all 6 month plus active PS ID’s an email with unique ordering code. Keep it valid for 48 hours and they order they do, if not it’s on them. Even if I have to wait 3 more months at least I know I’m ordered, and waiting in the queue.

  • The only people who can get ps5’s are scalpers!!! And then we get to pay $1,000.00’s thanks Sony for the worst pre-order launch EVER!!!

  • How is it that I waited in que for over 3 hours and the ps 5 console is sold out. This is lame… it’s set up to get people hyped. On 11/12/2020
I went to target online to order but sold out. This is bull

  • Release was a mess for anyone trying manually.

BOTS ATE REAL GOOD. And trust me…they definitely took the order/pickup options.
500 profit/system is definitely worth the drive to pickup from multiple stores. Some of you are either clueless or just trolling.

In-store release would’ve been a much better option. Send emails 2-3hours before store opening saying available for instore. Please comply with COVID or release canceled.

Because yeah I know COVID here but life must go on. It is in every other facet…isnt it?!!?!!!?!!!!
Plus, people know the drill for being in public…6ft…mask and sanitize. The stores could’ve easily implemented this with a ticket system. Line up….give tickets/take info down…send folks home or back to car to pick up later. That way the people who actually wanted the system for gaming got one if they put the real work in and online botters eat and compete with one another to sell fast.

  • I don’t have an issue with online ordering only. That’s fine. My issue is that you’ve allowed your “retail partners” to set this up such that bots/scalpers really are preventing your loyal customers from making a purchase. Only a fool can claim not to see the eBay sellers with 18-20 launch PS-5’s for sale at two, three, four times the normal retail price. This was both foreseeable and preventable yet still it has been allowed to occur… and to continue occurring. I have both money and the desire for a next-gen console yet you can’t seem to figure out how to sell me one.

  • BTW…Does anyone know if more will be released online.

I would rather in store but pretty sure all gone. Wish Sony would just send me an invoice to my PSN. That would be awesome.
