PlayStation 5: Launch Day Ordering Update

Launch-day sales will be online-only this year, so please plan ahead.

Hi all – the launch of the PlayStation 5 console on November 12 (or November 19, depending on your region) is almost upon us! In the interest of keeping our gamers, retailers, and staff safe amidst COVID-19, today we are confirming that all day-of launch sales will be conducted through the online stores of our retail partners.

No units will be available in-store for purchase on launch day (November 12 or November 19, depending on your region) – please don’t plan on camping out or lining up at your local retailer on launch day in hopes of finding a PS5 console for purchase. Be safe, stay home, and place your order online.

Gamers who have pre-ordered for pick-up at their local retailer should still be able to do so at their designated appointment time, under the retailer’s safety protocols. Please confirm the details with your local retailer.

    What a joke launch day is,lol. Sony…really, this is your idea of a console launch? Playstation Direct, was in queue, 2 hours later sold out. BESTBUY. Same. Walmart, had everything in otder. Had ot in my cart. Cc info already in. Checkout locked up, next thing u know sold out.
    This is unacceptable for launch day Sony….thanx for possibly giving me a stroke before this day is over. Sony, u need to get it together as of right now the stress is not heathy. I dont even know why I bother 😒

    Attempt number one Walmart at noon website was crashed out two minutes before noon. Great idea Sony but you’re giving these all out to scalpers who are going to triple the price of them over the next few weeks. I can’t compete with a bot how fair is that 👎🏻

      Yep, sad truth is your correct. I really hope Sony gets a taste of what they put all of their loyal customers through with this mess. Imo ,today was nothing more than a mess same as sept was. Hardly what I would have expected from a company that I thought had some idea on customer service.

    How do i cancel my purchase for ps5 / i went to my gamestop just a few min ago , i live in canada , gamestop ask me to give sony a call to cancel my order for ps5 today! Does anybody that lives in canada knows sony support number in canada for me to cancel my order of ps5 through waitting in lin website from gamestop canada?

    Selling PS5s on launch day online only? Single stupidest idea ever. Did nobody learn anything during the pre-order fiasco? Bots are eating up vast majority of sales and crashing sites just like the pre-order days. For the love of god, start shipping physical PS5s to retailers now.

    I knew things would be different due to the virus but it seems Sony could have done things different. They should have used their BIG COMPANY clout to let anyone pre order and then the individuals could face their place in line to get a console. I know the local Target and Walmart only had 30 units each, so this is a really, really bad console release.

    This is completely ridiculous, online orders are being bought up in seconds by bots and snipers, sony completely failed its fan base with this console launch. Seriously considering switching to Microsoft over the complete failer from sony.

    This is nuts! I can’t even get a PS5 in my cart let alone actually order it. Geeesh. I don’t even know how people are accessing to purchase when I’m literally waiting to the second for the release and it goes out of stock immediately. Smh

    Bots win PS users lose… you should have sold the consoles to users with active PSN accounts with achievement scores. That way bots can’t buy.

      That’s an awesome idea. Only PS I haven’t been able to get on release. Guy I know with retail bot bought 16 PS5’s today and sold them all. Nice work Sony!

    Yes, plan ahead to compete with professional scalpers and bots. Plan ahead to try and try and be frustrated. If only there was a way to avoid this, say, a lottery. It doesn’t matter who buys the units as long as they sell!

    Sony this was a horrible choice. The online site crash and there’s never enough to satisfy your customers. Your losing more people than it’s worth. If your so concerned for safety then send out some trucks across country and make stops and sell the consoles direct to us. You guys should have know how crazy this was gonna be. No excuse for you not being prepared. Get them consoles on the shelf and let us buy them.

    Shame people have bots doing the shopping at all the store sites and are crashing the store sites and buying up the entire stock everytime it goes on sale. Then they are putting them on eBay for twice the price. Should have just allowed private citizens to pre order online and not just a select few.

    Sony you really dropped the ball on this next gen release. Online only with super limited stock. Bots are literally buying up everything before my web browser can load. I’ve had several in my cart that as soon as I complete my purchase it’s taken away from me. Why not just have a form on your site where we can buy it directly from you! Take my money already! Seems pretty simple. Yet I can go to my local Fred Meyer and buy the new Xbox no problem. You are catering to scalpers, who make money off of you, and not your loyal fan base. Pathetic.

    You know all of this could be avoided if they didn’t limit the stock, or you know take pre-orders. Get the number for pre-orders then manufacture as many pre-orders were requested. Problem solved, no more scalpers and the company could make more money.

    I have tried to buy the PS5 from multiple retailers, all within seconds of their release and was not able to complete a sale on any site. Non of the retailers websites appeared to do anything to prevent bot purchases and all were out of stock within 5 minutes of launch. This is a joke. If you didn’t have a reasonable quantity available you shouldn’t have launched the product. You have left me feeling angry at Sony and reluctant to continue doing business with you. Not very good public relations IMHO.

    I really wish y’all would have tried to come up with a better strategy for store release. I haven’t bought a PlayStation in a really long time and I was really invested in getting the new one this year. If you weren’t going to release in store. You could have given retailers sufficient enough stock to avoid issues with the sites crashing, and bots stealing people’s orders for resellers. It’s ironic how I’m most likely going to get a PS5 at store anyways because GameStop is guaranteeing at least 2 consoles in each store on Black Friday.

    I absolutely recognize and appreciate that you are offering these for online sale given COVID, however this has opened the door for “bots” to purchase these units right away and has left many of us just spending hours trying to beat out a bit, which is close to impossible. These are now available only through eBay for twice and even almost three times what the cost is. I refuse to pay that, but there are thousands on these auction sites and the majority of the true consumers are left with no options to purchase these. I do feel there should be another release date and maybe there is a way that you can force the user to enter a captcha code or something through the merchants that are selling these. It’s really disappointing that this is what has happened. Hopefully people hold off and don’t buy these on eBay for the prices they are asking, but still we are left with no gift.

    Very disappointed that you all did not prepare to have tons of systems made and available for the public. I have struggled all day to order online through Walmart because they’re system is on overload! When will you all restock and have enough without running out?

    This is by far the dumbest idea any one had ever had . Make it a online release on a server that can barely process a pair of socks . I hope you guys lose money and customers .     This is a terrible launch. I have been a PS guy since the 1st one. An I am really considering going to XBox just because they are available. I never thought that I would ever say that but that’s how I’m feeling with this online purchase crap. I mean put enough out there for your loyal consumers. Now what we gonna have wait another month an HOPE that we win the draw this is ridiculous

    This is the dumbest Launch of a gaming console I have ever seen. Why is it being launched in phases, it is shutting down websites when people try to order. Folks using bots to order for massive mark-ups are the ones getting the console not the PlayStation customers. Looks like i may have to go to buying XBox. No issues there.

    I got the mail on 08/26 about entering in a selection to have a pre-order.
    On 09/24 I got the mail from Sony that I was selected.
    On 09/25 I was able to do the preorder.
    Today: 11/12 I have my PS5 with me.

    Sony should keep this to every PSN Plus member, one PS5 per user with a PSN Plus membership old enough to confirm they are not bots.

    Anyway, I’m happy and I’m off to play.

    So we are to fend for ourselves against bots and upsellers? Awesome. Would’ve been smart to work with your retail partners. And develop a curbside delivery. Because if you hadn’t noticed people are upselling your product by 800% on eBay and Facebook marketplace. As a business owner I would never do this to my customer’s. If you need help on how to battle upsellers I’ll send you some ideas for free. 2step verification, captcha, curbside delivery. Enjoy those profits while the rest of us struggle to find a better gift for the holidays.

    Been a PlayStation fan since day one and have gotten free 20 dollar gift cards for spending the most in one month….I’m probably buying a pc now cause this is a joke trying to get a ps5!! Everyone that is reselling and using bots to get one, y’all can burn in hell and I hope you get stuck with a bunch of ps5s you can’t resell.

    They could have made it so you buy a voucher that you have to show up for at a certain date and time and made it so only so many people could show up at a time. Rather than letting bots order and get it shipped. If you made a voucher people who set up bots would have a lot harder time getting through to it. I’m sure there’s hundreds of ways sony could have not given up on it’s community for this. I will stand by Sony any day, but you would think there could have been a better implemented system even with Covid to prevent bots from destroying the market for the PS5.

      I don’t think they have an actual release date yet, but I would keep an eye out for Black Friday at the soonest.

    Terrible, today was the release day and just like everyone else that tried to get one online the website crashed as soon as it was available and didnt work until it sold out. i got as far as cashing out for it to give me an error. how is playstation ok with these scalpers using “bots” to sell them for double online. facebook this guy was selling a ps5 for 900.

    I believe if you look on eBay you’ll see there are no true gamers left just sharks trying to make a buck , triple the asking price “yeah right” . I have been gaming with PlayStation since ps1 always been loyal and was tight on money when pre-order happened. Sad days for me

    For anyone who reads this; DO NOT BUY FROM EBAY OR ANY SELLERS BUT RETAILERS. Don’t let the A**holes who took advantage of a crisis/release of a new gen console profit off your money. Their values and morals are completely money based and destroy our enthusiam for a console by jacking up the price to make a profit from someone who just wants a new console to enjoy for the holidays. Wait for the next round and hope for the best. The less we buy from these jerk bot users, the more they hurt because they can’t sell them for profit and lose the point. If no one buys from bot users, jokes on them. They’ll be out. Just wait.
