Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition – demo out now!

Download the free demo today and transfer your save data to the full version of the game when it releases on December 4.

This past July, we announced that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition and its hundreds of hours-worth of content are arriving on PS4 on December 4. Today, we’re pleased to announce that a free demo is coming… right now!

Visit the demo page and download now!

What’s included in the demo?

The demo is a generous slice of the game that will take you multiple hours to complete – and all your progress carries over to the full game!

It takes you through the lengthy opening chapter of the game. You start as a young man about to take part in a ceremonial climb, marking his passage into adulthood. But when events take an unexpectedly dangerous turn, he discovers a power and destiny that will change his life forever.

If you’ve ever played a Dragon Quest game, you know this simple setup will soon turn into something far more epic and emotional – and sure enough you’ll encounter all kinds of twists and turns in the demo that you won’t expect. We won’t spoil anything here, but let’s just say you’ll meet some characters you won’t forget any time soon…

After the introduction, you’ll be unleashed into the lush and vibrant world of Erdrea. The areas you’ll get to explore are richly detailed, full of secrets to discover and monsters to defeat in exciting and fast-paced turn-based combat.

You’ll also get to experience some of the new enhancements added to this version of the game.

What’s new in the Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition?

This version of Dragon Quest XI has more new features than you could shake a slime at. For example, it now features the orchestral in-game music as standard – these beautiful Dragon Quest tracks have never sounded so rich and full.

Other new enhancements you’ll be able to experience in the demo include the ability to speed up battles, making those basic fights whiz by. Slicing through hordes of Cruelcumbers and Needlers in record time is weirdly satisfying and addictive.

You’ll also be able to try out the new photo mode so you can capture the beautiful vistas and meadows in artistic shots, or just pose the characters in funny ways.

There’s loads more beyond the demo too – the full game has hours of additional story content, an improved crafting system, and even a feature that lets you play the whole game in 2D like a classic Dragon Quest game. Find out more about the new features here.

How long is the demo?

When we say this is a generous demo, we mean it. With so much story to see, so many characters to meet and so many monsters to battle, you could spend up to 10 hours playing this. And don’t worry – all that progress can be carried over to the full game.

When is Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition out?

If you’re excited to play more, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition releases December 4. You can pre-order now at PlayStation Store.

We hope you enjoy your first steps on this epic journey, and we can’t wait for you to play the full game later this year.

  • It’s a port of the Switch version, trash.

    • What’s so trash? It has way better graphics than the switch version, more like the OG if not better, plus all the QOL upgrades from the switch version as well as all the new content. Nothing trash about it

    • The assets are of lower quality than the PS4 base version. They should have used the PS4 version and added the QOL updates if the Switch version.

    • Hardly trash, have it on Switch and its epic

  • Do owners of the previous edition get a discount on the Definitive Edition?

  • This is awesome! I wanted to play in 2D and was disappointed it was not there in the previous PS4 version! Getting this day 1

  • Sorry to hijack this topic but I don’t understand why Sony is not telling people they can claim their vr adapter by going to the Sony website support and filling out a form. They should email people or make a blog post but nothing has been said.

Please people go cliam it if you need it

    • this only effects vr owners, which is <2.5% of the ps4 userbase. you should be hitting up vr game blog posts not dragon quest.

besides you are encouraging a situation where people try and horde something they don’t need, so that when actual vr owners that need the adapter cannot get the thing expediently.

    • I have spammed the message in vr and non vr topics and to point out you need the vr serial number to cliam. Also no matter how small the ownership is they should still say something.

    • First, its great that you give this information, and yes, the blog should make news about it. And it doesnt matter how few % got VR, its still relevant news. Over 5 million people have the headset.

    • Seems like original reply was hidden (because I mentioned the competition?). Repost without reference to that other thing that is out soon.
Looks very much like PSVR is abandonware now and that Sony want as little fuzz about it as possible. PSVR only works in PS4 back compability mode on the PS5. I’m done supporting a company that doesn’t give a damn about it’s userbase.

  • The Question is though, you earn trophies in the first 10 hours of the game. I know the demo won’t unlock trophies, will they unlock retroactively when the game actually drops?

    • zero chance.

take for example the weekend trial of assasins creed odyssey, i did the whole first island and chapter 100% then bought the game. guess where my 7 hours and trophies are?

id have to replay it again say with a different sibling to get what i missed.

Also as a day one owner and preorder supporter of dq11, where is my options to upgrade to this version, or at leas pt give me the damn orchestral soundtrack?

nope buy it again with a port based iff the switchm with the exact same switch demo, which my son has on his machine.

releasing on my birthday no less. and if i do get this version i lose my save and have to start from the beginning. what a joke from square enix on a game that will receive the ps5 ultimate edition anyways.

trophies carrying over from demo saves LUL.

    • That’s sad if you’re right. That AC bs would get me so mad smh. So guess avoid this demo. My question is now Will it run with the horrible res choice on Pro still, It made me sell the game originally after 3 hours because the grass while moving on Pro was SUPER ghosting. So i ddin’t get to finish the OG. Only reason O want to get this version. I guess I’ll go on steam and try and see the differences, This is so sad to hear, how is this called definitive and did this lol. Explains why this couldn’t be a DLC upgrade to the OG like say Sonic Mania

    • wait for the eventual digital foundry coverage if the ps4 pro 4k / supersampling treatment is a deal breaker for you.

the pro and vanilla both have their issuesl i had vanilla at the launch of this and upgraded to the pro. its there the leaves grass shimmer, but the version overall is still better than switch with its lower targets.

tbf i like the switch version for what it is and will likely buy it for my son when he is a bit older. he adores the game and has the preorder character buttons on his shelf.

the trophies has to do with the way ps4 and i would bet ps5 operate, you trigger the trophy or you don’t get it. these game trials and deluxe demos turn it off. i was annoyed over ac but ubisoft trophies and plats don’t really matter it rubbed me they didn’t disclose in the trial notes that was the case. there is a subset of players that collect and go for platinums. i do it for games i really like.

it in reality is just square reselling the game with a rush upres or whatever for ps4 xbox now that the year nintendo exclusivity of the version is over. standard stuff. but at the expense of core fans.

    • With any game that has early trophies in a demo or trial(if people actually care about them) will unlock when you have a retail copy.

    • So the odd thing about it juice, there’s actually games that do unlock trophies retroactively. I know for a fact that Ragnarok Odyssey and ACE for Vita do because I’ve platinums both on Vita and restored my Vita then put my save files back on. The moment I loaded them it legit spent the next 2 mins unlocking every trophy back to back until the platinum since I didn’t sync the trophy list at the time. Both versions did and also Sly4 100% does as you can even look on my trophy list the PS3 version I unlocked all of them in like 2 mins too.

Jisatsu so why I’m not convinced without direct confirmation is because of Warframe. When they had trophies added that were completed already it completely ignored your achievements and you had to get again. So until it’s something proven to work that way like say Square has done this specific thing often then sure. But I think the only times I’ve seen this it didn’t unlock unless it was advertised to be unlocked under those 1hour trials or whatever they were.

    • I have the first one on Steam with a PC that’s easily able to max it running at 144hz and it looks and plays great. But I’d rather play on ps5. Only way I’ll get this version is if that annoying grass shimmer is gone. Otherwise I may just get OG and deal with that lol. Because I just downloaded the PC demo and compared to the OG both max at 1440p and S really is a clear downgrade, especially in motion. Just looking at the hero’s pant leg or the cell shaded outlines was enough to make me soo disappointed. On switch it’s perfectly fine. But when there’s versions with better graphics for everything else. Nawww

you are one of the guys that is always in the blog with no life dogging every person that doesn’t agree with your super pro Sony views.

along with tylerdurden, Zanfear and others

like get a fn life. people have the right to use the blog to express your frustration with the products and service they have paid for.

i bought dq11 at launch. have a year sub of sony ps now. i have been a fan of and consumer of sony playstation and bravia / trinitron since psx. i have a psn account from winter 2007.

you add nothing, and are wrong about the demo trophies. where’s my ac odyssey game trial trophies then among others?

go cri, ok brew you just keep hounding every post on the blog like a lost soul. with no purpose in life.

    • when you don’t type essays every week like you it takes less then a few seconds. p.s. you seem really upset.

  • Isn’t this the inferior version or is that incorrect?

  • How about you offer loyal owners of the game the orchestral option. That’s basically all i really want or care about at this point.

if i wanted “this” version i’d get it on the switch.

Square Enix has been really weak lately and it is hard to support crass business decisions. I would rather just wait for the inevitable ps5 ultimate editions of their big franchises, if i have to buy the same games yet again while we wait years for whatever ff16 actually is.

The fact that i lose my save file to “upgrade” to this version of the game is a deal breaker, The og na version is plenty long and plenty good. the 2d mode is overblown, and the mounts are window dressing over actual game improvement. to be fair even the original japanese version is still fine versus the NA versions improvements.

performance wise the switch version is a dog to the american ps4 release, and the ps4 pro version of the game is a mediocre job by square enix graphically as well, have a look at the digital foundry analysis of the versions and you will see. this is the switch version running on ps4.

great to keep your core audience happy. yeah not so much. i’ll buy dq12 but that is the only square enix i know i will support. ff15 was a waste if my money and time.

    • tl;dr: cri

    • i replied to some of your replies. so you are saying you have no life.

  • I wonder if you’re ever going to fully translate the original?

The original release gave you a code at the end which allowed you to play versions of DQ1 and DQ2 (which does fit with the plot). But in the western rerelease all you did was remove the code screen and never bothered with either part.

  • Not offering a discount for those of us who own the PS4 digital is lame. However, that’s nothing to moan about for some of us since it debuts on Game Pass. Being only $40 at launch means that the physical and digital will be discounted to $20 or less in the near future.

Reports indicate that it does run at 60fps on PS4 Pro. That’s not saying much since it is a port of the graphically inferior Switch version. Likewise calling it the “Definitive” edition isn’t saying much.

    • you do lose your save, so for a 60hr+ game people might not have the time or inclination to replay from, the jump.

the first 5-10 hours is pretty obnoxious to have to replay.

but for sure this will be on ps now for 90 days down the line as well and discounted by 25% or more for the new year if not black friday “week” LUL

if you never played the game, getting it on gamepass is excellent value for j/rpg fans. its a great game and unless you have the x the xone and s have trash performance anyways so a switch rework is fine.

    • more cri

  • Other publishers out there give us something like that as a free update or at least as a paid DLC – but not Square-Enix.
“Hey, the game you bought last year? Here we have an inferior port with some QoL-changes and the much needed orchestral soundtrack, please pay again for it, kthxgoodbye!”

The same thing already happened with Persona. What’s the deal with japanese publishers nowadays?

  • Im having issues with the party chat and other function on my ps4. What’s going on??

  • One of the best games ever.

  • Wow 10h for a demo?…this ain’t no joke no wonder the file is huge.Nice to see a demo of it released, always wanted to try the game cuz it looks gorgeous and interesting but the dreadful turn-based combat pushes me away, such a shame this game doesn’t have a decent combat like FF7 for instance but might give it a try anyway.Appreciate the demo y’all.

    • “dreadful turn-based combat” almost like it’s a real jrpg for real rpg fans.

“decent combat like FF7 for instance” yea the real FF7 has the same ATB and WTB style.

  • What I’m wondering, is why isn’t there a patch for those of us who have the standard edition of the game (it doesn’t HAVE to be free) so we can too enjoy this version. It hardly feels fair or forward thiniking towards faithful fans who purchased this game years ago.
