Devs speak: How PS5 console’s ultra-high speed SSD and Tempest 3D AudioTech engine will enhance the future of gaming

Devs share initial thoughts on two distinguishing PS5 console features.

With PlayStation 5, our goal is to put the player at the heart of the gaming experience. From the DualSense wireless controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, to the ultra-high speed SSD, to the immersion felt with Tempest 3D AudioTech engine, we want players to lose themselves in every PS5 game.

To provide in-game examples of these benefits, we asked developers around the world to share their thoughts on how the PS5 console’s ultra-high speed SSD and Tempest 3D AudioTech engine will shape the future of gaming. You can see some of the games that will leverage these features in our latest video:

Devs speak: How PS5 console’s ultra-high speed SSD and Tempest 3D AudioTech engine will enhance the future of gaming

Read on, and leave your comments below!

Beyond near-instant loading and fast-travel, the SSD and its speed allow us to more quickly load and display more detailed assets. This should lead to the city looking better than ever, and this is just the beginning for our team unlocking those possibilities. It’s a fundamental change that we can’t wait to take more advantage of in the years to come.”— Brian Horton // Creative Director, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

As developers [of Demon’s Souls], we are already changing the way we think about the SSD. We see it not just as storage but also memory, utilizing the speed of the SSD to load data at blistering speeds, bringing you straight back into the action to avenge your many deaths.”— Gavin Moore // Creative Director, SIE Japan Studio

Hitman 3 pushes you to explore and experiment in huge sandbox locations – and being able to save/load frequently is key to that. The blitz-fast load times we are seeing on the PS5 console encourages [player] experimentation more than ever.”— Mattias Engström // Game Director, Hitman 3

The SSD is a gamechanger, I think as this generation matures we will see some amazing innovation in streaming and open-world game design.”— Neil Hill // Lead Programmer, Far Cry 6

A bit further into the next generation I’m expecting we’ll start seeing developers make more use of the not-so-obvious benefits of the SSD. This is what excites me the most! What does it mean for developers when everything can be loaded from the disk that fast? Will we even need the concept of “levels” anymore?…. The possibilities for this tech are exciting for me as a developer, and exhilarating for me as a gamer.”— Ari Arnbjörnsson // Lead Programmer, Returnal

Hopefully players were able to see the new extended gameplay demo we recently revealed for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The SSD and custom I/O architecture around it allows us to send players across dimensions with near-instant speed. It fundamentally changes the rules and allows us to think about ideas and game designs that are only possible on PS5.”– Marcus Smith // Creative Director, Insomniac Games

Tempest 3D AudioTech Engine

PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech engine is designed to provide highly accurate audio positioning, which could spell a major leap forward for gaming immersion. Developers across the globe are already putting the Tempest 3D AudioTech engine to good use, and below, they’re sharing some of their plans (and hopes) for the feature:

3D Audio is exciting because it can create a more convincing and accurate soundscape for players, and a stronger sense of place.… in a fast-paced action game with lots of verticality like Returnal, it can also help with the player’s situational awareness, and make it more intuitive for players to pinpoint the locations of nearby enemies or incoming projectiles in the heat of combat.”— Harry Krueger //  Game Director, Returnal

The ability to layer the music even more deeply with dozens of different states reacting to areas and enemy levels make for an environment that’s even more lush and mesmerizing. The players can use these cues to prepare accordingly in the hopes that they might live another day.”— Julian Maroda // Creative Director and CEO, Norsfell

Now with the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech sound engine we’ll be able to play sounds in such a way that players will be able to locate the machines around them with greater ease, which is great for situations in which you find yourself surrounded or just want to sneak on machines.”— Mathijs de Jonge // Game Director, Guerrilla

Audio is a key feature to really push the next-gen experience with PS5. It’s almost as if 3D Audiotech was made specifically with horror games in mind. It used to be that in order to get that spatial audio, players would have to invest a lot of their own time and money. Now, just putting on a headset, they can get a full 3D audio experience.”— Jun Takeuchi // Executive Producer for Resident Evil Village

Our game worlds have been 3D for generations now, but for audio we typically have been limited to 2D surround sound. When Iron Man is destroying a turret positioned above you, or Hulk roars as he takes on the enemies below you, you want to hear the sound coming from those directions. We can just take the actual positions of the audio and ensure we get them to the PS5 3D Audiotech engine and significantly improve your sense of being in the world. And all that is just with your headphones, without needing complex surround stereo systems.”— Jurjen Katsman // Studio Head at Nixxes, developers for Marvel’s Avengers

  • Is there a new God of War game coming?

    • I don’t know, I want a new metal-theme Primal sequel!! \m/

    • Eventually, yes.

    • In 2 years or so.

    • A game I would loved Remastered, similar to Final Fantasy 8, would be Legend of Dragoon.

      Please make it happen Sony.
Have either a Remaster or Remake of Legend of Dragoon.
Graphics Enhanced from battle characters to towns and areas resolution and color enhanced. More polygons on playable characters and enemies.

The ability to have all attack skills available when selecting attack, rather than just one attack set prior to the battle, and custom prioritize which attacks goes first on the list.

Shana/Miranda to have multiple arrow attacks (Poison Arrow to Poison enemy. Flaming Arrow to Burn enemy. Explosion to attack all. Venom to paralyze)
      Trophy 🏆 Support

That game is a great PS1 classic and is much needed for a comeback on PS5 in one shape or another.

    • I have to agree with some of the other posts . I’m sure we are all huge PlayStation fans, myself included but I’m floored at how terrible the marketing has handled anything to do with the PS5. For two years now you have been dangling carrots , cancelling E3 appearances, and saying things like we are crouching down so we can jump higher ? Well so far that hasn’t happened in terms of your marketing , everyone is left in the dark ! finding scraps of info from YouTube and Leaked sources . Once again Mark Cerny has worked his magic to make an incredible product . BUT ….having zero celebration or anything on the 25th anniversary is just down right deplorable ! Enough with the “Soon” pay attention to what Xbox and Nintendo are doing for their fans and remember all those units sold and success of the last generation is all due to your fan base . Roll up the sleeves guys and fix this terrible mess . Give praise when praise is deserved ……this is not one of those times.
      Cheers

  • INSTA NASHEEEEEEEEEEE

    • Sony, people working at Playstation.
People are loosing patience to know when these consoles are going to be released and what’s the price.
Even if you’re the first out of the gate to show the price, do it, have more balls than Microsoft.
Now Microsoft will discount the Series X to compete with the PS5, they were going to regardless…
But they have no exclusives for the entire first year. The PS5 will fly off store shelves, the Xbox console is no longer relevant to Microsoft nor to you.
      400$ PS5 All Digital Edition. 450$ with the Blu-Ray disc, or 500$.
Announce it soon so that we can make a pre order on it.

    • September 9th is the best time to announce that since it’s the 25th year anniversary of the first Playstation.

  • Aww, that’s cool…. So when can we pre-order?

    • Right now, the pre-orders are invite only. That was the first round of them. Pre-orders will be open to everyone September ninth, I believe.

    • That registration is for the US only.

    • As i posted about a week ago on another thread, I’ve got a horrible feeling the ps5 will release in December in the uk.Because of, us only pre-order registrations and because playstation.com/ps5 uk, has changed its ps5 release date to “late” 2020 from holiday 2020 on its main ps5 page. I hope I’m wrong.

  • Do we need to have a 4K TV or better to enjoy these games? cause right now my TV is a Sony 1080p =/

    • In short the answer is ‘yes’, but games on PS5 will look incredible compared to what you’re used to seeing on PS4 so, if buying both a PS5 and a new TV is stretching things for you get PS5 now and a TV later. While 4K is great, developers will have state of the art image reconstruction techniques at their disposal which will make lower resolution images look better than they ever have done before so, upgrading you TV is less important.

Personally I’ve just bought a new 4K TV, but I’m more interested in performance than resolution. If games on PS5 are 1080p/1440p at 60fps I’d rather use those modes than 4K/30fps, but it’s what is important to you that counts.

    • 😴Better sound, better graphics, faster load times.

    • So clarification
      *Native 4k/30 w Raytracing
      *Temporal 4k Reconstruction/60 w Raytracing.
*Ratchet’s fur is Raytraced & also effected by wind
      *Full DualSense integration
      *No loading screens ever
      *Launch window
      *Running entirely on #PS5
Insomniac is out here doing God’s work

    • The PS5 really needs Full Backwards Compatibility with PS1, PS2 and PS3 without the need of PS Now.

PS Now needs to be a great service on it’s own. Trying to market it as the “Backwards Compatibility” option convinces people NOT to get the service because they want THE REAL experience where otherwise PS Now is probably The Best Cloud Gaming Service with The Most Game Library.

A potato PC can run PS1 and PS2 so just do it. These 2 are very easy to make compatible. Very Easy.
Otherwise, people are leaving Playstation in favor of a PC where they can play them.
We don’t want that. I love PlayStation and I want it’s success. This needs to be done.

    • @CommandingTiger

If a PC can already do backwards compatibility than you already have it if you have a PC and the PlayStation 5 doesn’t need it. To be perfectly honest going back to old games that you love sometimes makes you think why did I ever like this game and your fond memories of a particular game are tarnished forever. Besides many of the more popular games are getting a remaster or a remake. I myself didn’t like the clunkiness of the original Demon’s Souls but the remake/remaster whatever you want to label it I’m sure is going to be a monumental difference compared to the original.

    • Clutch_sam007,

Most developers won’t use dlss, I think they will give you 2 options 4k/30fps ray tracing equipped or 1440/60fps with no ray tracing. If they used 4k dlss/60fps no body would even notice it wasn’t native 4k so there would be no point offering player options 4k/30 ray tracing or 1440/60 no ray tracing, that’s how we know not many developers will use dlss techniques.

  • Y’all really don’t want to drop that price.

  • Still I think some questions not answered for example has the game file size issue been solved. If the console will only have around 800 GB SSD will most games be like PS4 with a 100 GB file? That would mean only 8 games could be saved and played at any time.

    • In one of the original PS5 tech videos, they explained that games will no longer have to create hundreds of the same assets ( eg Lamp Post ), they now only need one. So the game files should be smaller, but they haven’t given us any numbers yet.

    • You can still use an external 3.0 drive to store your games. But if you do that you won’t get the benefits of the SSD. I myself don’t care because load screens aren’t that big of a deal. Also I have been seeing a 2 TB version over on Play-Asia for almost 2 months now.

  • What’s about price??

  • Hopefully this is only the start they probably will be more better games coming soon to ps5.

  • Those features sound really cool but how many more times are we gonna hear about that without getting a price and release date? We’re a month away from Q4 and you said the ps5 would drop by the holiday season.

Well, the clock is ticking! Given the global situation, I think most people would be ok if you need to delay it but please say something!

  • Im excite! If I own a 7.2 surround system, how will this improve it if at all. Will it be different, will it be more like Dolby Atmos which I plan on upgrading to later to 7.2.2. Just tell us straight up, is this Sonys version of Dolby Atmos?

  • Querenos el precio! A caso no se preocupan por México muchos queremos pre ordenarla ya mismo !!!

  • I forgot to mention TOO!

  • What’s is the price

  • Hi everyone, Im 30 years old, I have the ps1 ps2 ps3 and ps4 waiting for this beauty to come out ps5, why am i saying this because where im from Curacao small island in the caribbean we always are the last to get things or the new technology..Im very happy with the future release of the ps5 and did you guys already sign up to be the first ones to get the first pre orders of the ps5? So yeah im ready and hope you can get this ready for the world. With love Mike.

  • Devs speak: How PS5 console’s ultra-high speed SSD and Tempest 3D AudioTech engine will enhance the future of gaming…….

At some point in the maybe near future.

  • Well, current 3D audio with Gold and Platinum headsets, if game supports it, is awesome also. Tsushima sounds amazing.

  • Give us BC ps3, ps2 & ps1. Digital only works for me. And a new handheld to go with my ps5. Looking forward to some remote play

    • Don’t blame anyone if you got disappointed in the future my friend.

Just a little advice, don’t put high hopes in sonething that may never happen.

  • Yes please. Can’t wait. I want to be lost in a PS5 game… Like yesterday.

  • All good, but how much does it cost? And will we be able to upgrade memory?

    • Do you mean memory as in RAM or as in storage space for games?

I think that would be a hard no on the former, but there should be an expansion bay within the PS5 that will facilitate the latter.

    • ram most likely will never be upgradeable in a console. The hard disk, now ssd is a bit amazing it can still. Most users(not all) that get a console do it solely for the plug and play aspect.

    • Isn’t there also the possibility they’ll just add more storage for the digital version instead of making it cheaper than the disc tray? Or is that an option that’s coming later?

  • Don’t forget about making gameplay better for PS5. I want unique, humour, creativity, meaningful and fun.

    • Looks like you’ll enjoy Spider-man: Miles Morales, or The last Of Us II

    • Too bad bo gameplay of spiderman has been shown except cut scenes. Actually pretty much nothing has been shown for any game which is ridiculous when is launching In 3 months. Give us the price, give us the EXACT titles that are launching day 1, and give us a console breakdown. You’re only hurting yourself and it’s pretty obvious you’re not ready for launch. If you were we’d see news everywhere and not the same R&C gameplay or controller nonsense. The fact that you treat you’re customers like this is upsetting.

    • @TwoLiterSoda, And how are they hurting themselves exactly?

  • Wonder how many youtube clickbait vids are gonna pop up after this article?

    lol

  • Just announce new god of war game without without kratos being dead no overdose of creativity pls !! lol then ps5 day 1 for me :).

  • I really hope it releases is like early to mid November. Anyone else?

  • I think it’s time for a new Boxing Game. It’s been Ten Long Years🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊

  • That won’t do any good if you don’t have exclusive games

    Only On PlayStation Forever

  • @lil13csed

Well I did not like Spiderman, so I won’t like Spiderman Miles. It was far to boring and repetitive within the game design. Not much will change with PS5, just fancier graphics, faster load times and better sound I guess.

    As for The TLOUP2👎😴🤬🤦‍♂️

But yeah, nice that you agreed with me about a new Boxing Game 👍😀 It’s long overdue, I can’t believe they skipped an entire generation.

    • Yeah my friends had WWE 2015 and the boxing game. I loved how you could like build your own characters XD

    • “Well I did not like Spiderman, so I won’t like Spiderman Miles. It was far to boring and repetitive within the game design. Not much will change with PS5, just fancier graphics, faster load times and better sound I guess.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I’m sorry, I can’t take anybody seriously who “Can’t believe they skipped an entire generation” for a *Boxing game* HAHAHAHAA

  • I’m so ready to test the new features out especially the 3D audio looks and sounds great

  • SOCOM!!!!!!! make it happen!

  • Price and release date or gtfo

  • Articles like these are a joke…of course they see going to say good things since they have games coming out on them. The same goes for MS.
What Sony needs to do is show the console breakdown and show more gameplay that we haven’t already seen. They want to hype up the console yet show nothing but the same stuff repeatedly. It’s 3 months away ffs.

  • I just can’t wait until I get the PS5 in my home…

  • As for Demon’s Souls, please tell me y’all managed to keep the atmosphere in the Tower of Latria.
Neighbor has a chime that kinds sounds the same, initially and I always jump as I hear it.

    • I’d prefer if they told me they’d reduced the ridiculous grind of the original.

It would be silly if they removed the dupe glitches but not the need to fight the same enemy 100s (or 1000s) of times.

  • Can’t wait for this to drop

  • This is all awesome, but please tell me how much and when I can pre order pleeeeeassssse!!

  • It’s all greatness. But just give us a release date already and price. Shut up and take my money Sony!!!

  • So everything yours can do Microsoft’s can do better is what I hear.
Honestly it doesn’t matter. Backwards compat is a flop, lack of games coming and price also a flop, the way the whole thing looks and size is a flop. Really everything Sony is doing is a flop.
Sorry will not even need to preorder or order this as I will not be wasting my money on this. There is no point at all. 500 bucks or more just for a faster load time. Yea I think I’ll be buying only one new console maybe two if the Switch comes out with a new model but it won’t be a Sony I buy.

    • Lol. Looks like you’re either A- looking for attention or B- on the wrong website. I advise you to look at Innocence on YouTube break down the systems. A engineering major that has the clearest explanation you’ll ever see. Nothing but facts. Either way, I don’t care what you do. Sony has more than sold this system to me and I’d gladly buy the one you miss out on 😁. It’s FAR more than faster load times. Sounds like someone is falling for the lies of the desperate 😂🤣

    • The best thing to do is buy a PC + Switch.

  • I am beyond looking forward to the features of the PS5, including this one. Next gen is about experiences and sound plays a big part.

  • I don’t want to see any open world games on PS5 that include the following.

    1. Huge Map with nothing in it.🤔🙄

    2. Fetch Quests and Repetitive gameplay🥱

    A. If I wanted to play fetch, I’d buy a Dog.

    B. Repetitiveness triggers the boredom cells which then trigger the sleeping cells 😴

    3. No Numpty NPC. For example,

    Player character enters NPC home.

NPC character looks at you with some blank expression😶, or says nothing at all.

Player character decides to go on a rampage😡 in NPC home. NPC character does nothing at all😶. Oh wait a minute, they may sometimes make a dash for it and scream Ahhhhhhhh😲😮😱 and never to be seen again.

No more Numpty NPC in video games for PS5 please Sony it really is embarrassing. Especially when people who don’t play video games pick up on this.

Video games have so much potential. Unfortunately it seems that graphics and resolution is top priority nowadays.

    • Look at basically all Sony’s titles for the PS4. Endless third person action adventures with optional stealth and dull sad plots (basically TLoUified sequels). But somehow, games apparently don’t need more than basic residual game play to be 10/10. 😂 (of course all the fans autopraise everything, so we probably wont see any improvement anytime soon)

The PS4 (especially US games) was a bit of a missing generation. But hopefully people are bored of PS3 style basic cover shooters and basic stealth where the “plot” is just a string of “character gets killed” and “cry then get revenge”. The horse in Shadow of the colossus had more emotional impact than the entirety of Sony’s PS4 fanfiction quality storylines and overpaid hammy voice actors.

One thing I reeeeeally want is bigger scale games. For all the “open world” the scopes are still very small tales of small individuals in small worlds. It doesn’t matter how big the world is if it’s focused on some dull bearded man crying over his wife version 236361B.

  • So, how much is it??….

  • Mary Yee – Vice President of Global marketing, what a poor, poor job you guys are doing.

What a shame, we’re 2 months or so out from release of this console, we don’t know what the UI looks like, the launch games, what features it has, what the new share button does, all the unconfirmed features for this console, the supposed teardown video of the console we are meant to have, the release date, the preorder window, the price.

Back in 2013 for PS4’s up coming release the management team who were here did an absolute remarkable job, they couldn’t put a foot wrong if they tried, but you guys, wow, appalling beyond anything.

Glad Nvidia showed case their new GPU line up today and the prices will make people consider the PC route.

  • I don’t care if the first U.S. PS5 shipment cost $600-$700 I’ll still preorder this cheap way advanced tech. It’s a steal . Then the second shipment should be $600 then down to $500. Also can you advertise PlayStation now because gamers think game pass of Xbox is better when it is a lower grade games Streaming on bad internet from around the world like ps now. and ps1, ps2, ps3,PS4 on PlayStation now can play on PS5? Please also tell Sony to talk to UE5 game tech demo epic to let us play this demo free on PS5 and make it a real game like project Athia. Thank you.

  • I think and believe Mark Cerny deserve Guinness book of recognition for creating , solving bottleneck on every part of PS5 tech, for making it not only evolutionary but also revolutionary with this ssd that made game devs and PC tech and gamers thinking and marveling how this is possible. The GDC presentation was excellent even though I’m just a littlebigplanet platform developer I understand Mark Cerny’s explanation and the meaning of GDC. Those who gave thumbs down on YouTube on Mark Cerny’s road to ps5 should go back and change to thumbs up for that was an excellent tech explanation and watch other devs watching , reviews about it was way impress , shock how this is crazy speed monster PS5 bout to eat us all with a new next gen experience with this 3D audio, and new controller tech and style. Sony don’t forget to buy myth Chinese game demo on UE4 from China and use UE5 instead. Thank you.

  • Pre order link please

  • Will there be a new uncharted game

  • When we can we as fans, hear about a price for PS5 on playstation blog, state of play, etc., for the general public on social media, TV, etc.? I know you guys as have been hard pressed by us fans as gamers to want to know a release date, etc. I’m more concerned about the price of a PS5. I have heard there are two versions of this new system via social media, etc. However, I’m not a particularly rich person who could or can afford a PS5 right off the bat, I may have to wait for awhile. So how long will continue to support PS4 games? Those are my two questions, what is the main price and how long will u continue to support PS4 games/gamers after release of the PS5? Thanks.

  • Wondering if I’ll find out the price when I’m picking up my PS5.. x_x Dying for a pre-order.

  • Time to retire my Pulse Elite headsets I guess. I don’t think they are compatible with Tempest.

    • My understanding is that Tempest is supposed to work with any speakers and headphones. It’s using subtle audio processing to create a 3D audio effect on a stereo setup.

  • I can’t wait for The Order 1886 Sequel. It has absolute huge potential, and the sequel will be truly something special.

I will buy a PS5 when sequel finally arrives, and a new Boxing game, which is long overdue.

  • I can’t wait for the ps5!!!

  • I was disappointed with the controller features (especially the pressure triggers) but the SSD and Tempest 3D Audio got me really excited. Can’t wait to see what developers can do with all that and Ratchet & Clank looks like a perfect showcase and launch game.

Please enter your date of birth.
