Spider-Man coming to Marvel’s Avengers exclusively on PlayStation

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes get a helping hand from a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in 2021.

Every once in a while, life presents you with a moment where your pursuits and your passions converge.  Today is one such moment for me because I get to be the first to announce that our own Crystal Dynamics take on Spider-Man is teaming up with Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow of Marvel’s Avengers.

This is so personal for me because I cannot remember a time when I didn’t love Marvel and its colorful characters, each more real and believable than the next.  But despite my enjoyment of Captain America, Iron Man Black Widow, and the other Avengers, there was always one character I saw myself reflected in, and that was Peter Parker: The Sensational Spider-Man.  Now I’m getting to channel my lifelong enjoyment of the character into a version of the interactive hero that I hope inspires the next generation of creators… and well, it’s my dream come true.

His allying with our Marvel’s Avengers heroes is in perfect symmetry with my exposure to the character.  When I was young, I accumulated a massive collection of Spider-Man books that told both dramatic and humorous stories of this colorful crime fighter, who was a fixture of Marvel’s New York, and that used his powers and ingenuity to protect his “neighborhood”.  But one day I read an issue that pushed him out of his natural settings and into the larger world, with hilarious results.  The story was titled “The Commuter Cometh!”, and it was a fantastic yarn about Spider-Man hunting down a robber in the suburbs.

Taking Spidey outside of Marvel’s New York forces him to try some new tricks

Watching Spider-Man adapt to new surroundings was such a great contrast to his status quo.  That tone is exactly what we want to capture for him in Marvel’s Avengers.  A familiar but fresh Spider-Man who needs to evolve to take on global threats alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

A Sensational Spider Hero

To make sure this team up goes smoothly, Vince Napoli, our Lead Combat Designer, is hard at work making Spider-Man just as great on the sticks as he is on the page.  This means making sure our hero moves and fights like he should, no matter which one of our War Zones he finds himself in.  When he’s arcing through the air on his web line, we want you to feel graceful and light, and be able to utilize a variety of web configurations and gadgets to enhance your traversal.  Spider-Man’s impressive acrobatic abilities will complement the experience, allowing you to seamlessly transition from navigation to combat.

With the abilities and proportionate strength of a spider, Spider-Man really knows how to get around

When Spider-Man takes on evil-doers, he’ll do so fluidly with his signature flair; but also, with the enhanced customization options we’ve created for Marvel’s Avengers.  Just like our other heroes, you’ll get to use the unique skill trees Vince and his team have designed to specialize how your Spider-Man plays in our world.  An impressive suite of iconic abilities and attacks will be at your disposal, and you get to decide which gadgets and skills you wish to upgrade.  These enhancements will be necessary for him to take on the threats coming his way.

No one knows how to dance around a fight like Spider-Man

A Sensational Take on Spider-Man

Despite all the great solo adventures Spider-Man’s been on, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Ms. Marvel is going to add a whole new dimension.  Players are going to face the world’s most dangerous threats together, using Spider-Man’s innate powers… boosted with a little help from his new friends. Partnering with the Avengers gives Spider-Man complete access to the impressive technology available to the team, such as custom web shooter-based technology from Hank Pym, SHIELD, Stark Industries, and more.  And by constructing the perfect gear and skills combinations, you’ll get the chance to live your Super Hero dreams through your ideal Spider-Man.

The neighborhood just got a whole lot bigger for Spider-Man

A Sensational Sense of Style

It’s not enough for Spider-Man to just play like he should… he also needs to look like he should.  That’s why when going through the process of conceptualizing his suit, we went back to the beginning.  Steve Ditko set the standard with his Spider-Man design, and John Romita Sr. evolved it into an icon recognized the world over.  Fans can expect to see Ditko and Romita’s influence in our take on the hero, with nods to other talented artists that have defined the character’s look over his long history.

With Spider-Man, it pays to respect the classics

A Sensational Celebration

When Spider-Man comes to our stable of heroes, we’ll be marking his debut with an in-game event that will introduce him to the wider world of Marvel’s Avengers.  The event is comprised of a series of unique challenges for the hero to take on, testing his abilities, and yielding some exciting results.  And like the rest of our heroes in Marvel’s Avengers, we will offer multiple cosmetic outfits and gameplay experience options, so you can make your vision of the wall crawler a reality.

It’s never been a better time to be a spider-fan!  The team at Crystal Dynamics, along with our partners, are overjoyed that we get to be a part of this hero’s gaming journey.  We can’t wait for you to add Spider-Man to your Marvel’s Avengers roster in early 2021, and as we’ve promised before, he will be available at no additional cost to owners of the base game, exclusively on PlayStation.

Thank you for your time, and I hope you enjoy playing Marvel’s Avengers when it launches on PS4 on September 4, 2020 and comes to PS5 later this holiday!

  • This really makes me hope for crossplay to be a feature in the game across every platform. I’ll be owning the PC edition, but would love to see other players be Spider-Man in my game even if I cannot play him myself. Spider-Man is just so special to the Marvel Universe, and to be a Playstation exclusive makes me hope this game will be a PS5 title also. Hey Crystal Dynamics if you see this post, give the option to have underarm webbing (web wings) as a custom cosmetic. Stay amazing and fantastic.

  • I’m not going to tell anyone they should or shouldn’t pre-order over this. I’m just going to point out that Marvel games have been doing this for a long time:
    – As another user posted, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is entirely a Switch exclusive. No word on if it’s coming to any platform.
    – Marvel Heroes was a PC exclusive game for years before it came to PS4 and Xbox One. Due to license issues, they could not add Fantastic Four, Dr. Doom, and Silver Surfer to the console versions.
    – Marvel Ultimate Alliance had a variety of platform exclusive characters. Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Hawkeye, Hulk, Magneto, Venom, Sabertooth, and Dr. Doom were all released on Xbox 360, not PS3. Colossus and Moon Knight were on the Wii Version. PSP and PC had exclusive characters too.

My point? Welcome to the fallout of Marvel selling their various media licensing through the years. That’s also why the MCU doesn’t have the Fantastic Four and X-men. Microsoft will have their own exclusive deals, for example Crossfire X which isn’t coming to PS5. Take it for what it is. But personally, I wouldn’t cancel over this, especially given Spider-man has his own hit Playstation IP already from Insomniac games. The precedent for his exclusivity is there already, so why even be surprised he’s exclusive in Avengers?

    • Your points are logical. But you should also take into account the hype was built to the entire Marvel gaming community at the same time. And the idea of “all future content at no additional cost” was repeated over an over again to suggest that no one would be prevented from enjoying the entirety of the expanding roster or storylines. The truth of platform exclusives should have been a transparent item before pre-orders were made available. This issue isn’t about what businesses have a right to do, it’s about what they should do when good business implies trust. Frankly it is too late in the PR sense to expect positive feedback with the introduction of platform exclusive content. They sold us on an entire community enjoying Marvel’s Avengers together. So yes, bringing in the ongoing console-war is inappropriate and very much a surprise at this point in the journey.

    • The MCU owns fox meaning they own fantastic four and x men

  • This is a beautiful love-letter of a blog post that is simultaneously a slap in the face to XBOX and PC gamers. It’s especially messed up for multi-platform owners who didn’t have a choice before pre-ordering. There is no marketing maneuver that can cover up how gross it is to take a major staple of the Marvel Universe and split the player base with it – holding the content hostage behind the cost of a playstation IS INDEED AN ADDITIONAL COST. It makes Crystal Dynamics out to be untrustworthy in one of their most rehearsed selling points and it makes Sony out to be anti-gamer. If this is a timed exclusive, fine. If we have to grind extra hard for Spider-man, fine. But there was never any warning of platform exclusive heroes for this multi-platform game and no matter how many heroes you add, you will have two-thirds of the gaming space looking over at Sony players with this disheartening realization that we were cheated out of experiencing Marvel’s Avengers as a universally known and appreciated hero in favor of greed and because we couldn’t just outright afford to pay for another platform when our preference and our friends were elsewhere. Given that I finally upgraded my XBOX to an X last year, my first next gen consideration was naturally a PS5. But Sony is so damned ugly with this move, keeping my money feels way better. If it turns out, as I imagine it would, that the actual developers would never intend to limit the experience of their game for anyone paying a fair price, and that it comes down to Sony, and Sony alone for this exploitative act, then I’ll support the game on XBOX now in spite of it. But if it turns out Square Enix took a bid from SONY for this and was complicit, it just wouldn’t be right and I wouldn’t want to enjoy an experience that had no problem dismissing such large portions of their intended audience over such a popular character. Marvel fans and Marvel’s Avengers fans shouldn’t be divided, not over money, not this way.

  • This is awesome news! I’m hoping you guys give us the Spider-Man ps4 suit as a skin!

  • Would I be able to Use the same acc on both ps4 and another system if I link the accs and buy it on both

  • Will I be available on PlayStation 5?

  • Alot of young people on here that didnt live through the sega/nintendo days lol.

  • As an owner of xbox and ps4 this is so stupid to make it Sony only, I for one will now not buy the game for my xbox one x as it’ll play best on that console and I’ll make dam sure people I know won’t buy it aswel. Now your going to lose out on so many sales. Good job hahaha

  • LMAO at the people complaining about this as if they don’t own a PS…crying for bots, beggars or whatever?…lol damn our community is on the abyss Jesus.Nice one Sony, let them know they made the wrong choice by playing elsewhere…anyway this Avengers is in ma doubt zone so while having Spidey exclusively is cool I’m not really sure about the game looking forward to the beta, that will be what will decide if the game is worth it or not.

    • Some of us aren’t children who still believe in that silly little console war.

Some of us like the systems to be united.

    • MaxDiehard, you know full well that’s never gonna happen. There’s always gonna be someone who likes different stuff than you.

    • What would you if PlayStation wouldn’t have any competition and all PlayStation games would be 100$ and the consoles would be 1000$ ? What would you do if Sony would come to your house and just take your wallet and keep it for good ? Think about that…
Competition is more important than you think.

  • let see how the spider man look like in the ge on ps4 spider man or make his own friendly neighborhood spideran from Marvel’s avengers game i want to see new skool spider half color red and white

  • Its not fear that spiderman its exclusive for ps, xbox fellas need their web head, first insomniac spiderman for ps and now spiderman in marvel’s avengers, pls at least this character exclisive for xbox too, we have enough to se orher people play whith spiderman and xbox not, qe are not rich to buy an a ps4

  • @welmosca
Pretty sure hes in the right comments. Do u realise Sony is making spiderman ps4 exclusive?

  • Making Spidey exclusive? Pathetic

As Tony Stark once said, ‘D**k move Banner’.

  • Is this supposed to get me to buy a PlayStation? Because it’s having the opposite effect.
Even further, it’s turning me off this game entirely.

    • I like you 👍🏽

      What they’re doing is disgusting.
If they really cared about gamers then they would know how wrong this is.

  • I guess I’ll have to get the game on PS4 just so I can play as Spiderman.

  • The Beta is going to be so much fun!

  • Cancelling my Preorder, this practice should not be supported (and i don‘t care if i‘m a Jerk, i‘m just honest).

  • Yikes this is guaranteed to get them flak I can see the headlines now.

  • I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS ONLY ON PLAYSTATION AND IM GONNA BRAG ABOUT SPIDERMAN IN THE GAME! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING SPIDERMAN IN THE GAME PLAYSTATION!

  • Xbox and pc dont deserve this

  • What everyone doesn’t understand is that this sucks for Playstation fans too, there is no way Spidey is integral to the overall and future narrative if he is only on 1 console, will be barely mentioned, is basically non-cannon. If he was on all systems then we could get some great story arcs and lots of awesome interactions with Spidey and the team. so Sad.

  • You have the ability to make this character for everyone but ps4 can have benifits suits don’t matter if they’re exclusive but a person that’s like missing out on part of the game it’s totally unfair that you do this not being able to play as a person due to what you play is horrible even if it’s pc or xbox doing this is unfair no matter what they play on xbox could only get Deadpool or black panther and then that’s just unfair as the spider man and if it happens the people who say this is fair will be mad because they couldn’t play as them this is just unfair and childish making parts of the game unplayable for others no matter who’s doing it trying to make more get the game on PlayStation by using the most loved character unusable for others showing this game cares more about sales than there consumers

  • Man I’m excited! And looking over Ditko’s original design which started Spider-Man! Is really heartwarming and yes it it was the other way round I would be very sad, but cancelling a preorder over something as small as a character is ridiculous yeah it is very sad but no need to no play it at all they’ve put in so much work

And it’s not like there’s no good characters and yet here all sad now yes but when the game comes out they will actually get carried away in it and like it soo.. I rest my case

  • This type of atrocity needs to stop.
Locking part of a multi-platform game under a “exclusivity” tag is just outright anti-consumer.
I was going to play this game, infact i had it pre-ordered on PC and refunded it, but i will not buy it on PS4 because such behavior from companies should not be rewarded with our hard earned money.
If Sony wants to exercise their exclusivity rights the right way, give us a new Spider-Man game exclusive to their platform. Has is this is shamefull.

  • I am Sad to see them lock this much content to a one system. It will hurt the games online community and shorten the life of the game. I own all the systems because I love gaming but this hurts the consumer. I had really hoped we had moved past practices like this. I did learn how easy it is to cancel a digital pre-order which is nice.

  • Sony must have the most childish reaction to everything. You can’t use my stuff, but I’ll gladly use yours. Imagine if Disney developing their own platform and teld all other platforms (and their players) tough you can’t use our IP’s anymore. Exclusivity sucks, I own every version of PlayStation but this is dumb. (maybe Disney should have let Sony keep flushing spider-man until it had to return to them…)

  • The fact that Spider-Man, the most popular Marvel hero, is exclusively coming to one platform just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. A timed exclusive is one thing, but making sure a majority of your player base can’t enjoy the web slinger is just so greedy that I will no longer be purchasing this game. We should not reward this type of behavior. The games industry has been moving more towards inclusivity and cross-play and this is a step backwards in my opinion. I was really looking forward to this game too..

  • I have been a gamer all my life. We have all had to persevere with exclusives another nonsense from these companies when it was their intellectual property however in this age of apparent equality and empathy this is beginning to feel like a dated trope. With most companies wanting to show the public that they care it is disheartening to see that there are still some that would rather divide people and fans instead of uniting them.
This title was a source of joy for my family ever since its announcement now however this news has soured it greatly. Yesterday morning I learnt from my newsfeed that Spider-man was a Sony Playstation exclusive only. I searched and couldn’t find if it was a timed exclusive or not but the news was stressful to me because we currently have an Xbox in our family room and this meant I would have to tell my ten year old Autistic son that he is not going to get to play as Spider-man.

Every time I would show him a new trailer on Youtube for the game he would be excited and say that I hope they add Spider-man, to which I would let him know that he might not be in the game (understanding the whole Marvel/Spider-man thing), preparing him that he might not be there. You may think this is no big deal but Spider-Man means the world to him, he is all around his room and mind, and now I knew that I had to have a talk with him to let him know what I had learnt. At the risk of sounding melodramatic to those that do not understand Autism I want to say games are supposed to be fun and inspire good times but all day I knew the pain this news would bring him.
Like most kids my son loves digital gaming and watches a lot of streamers and such on Youtube Kids and so I was aware I had to address the fact he would see that Spider-man is in the game and get super pumped about it. I will never forget the look on his face when I told him that while Spidey will be in the game for some people, he would not be for you. To see a ten-year old’s face go from pure illuminated joy to utter sorrow is heartbreaking. As he began to tear-up he looked at me and asked one word “Why?”
All I could answer him with was “Because some companies care more about money that they do people. They are so greedy for money that that can’t see that they are hurting themselves and others”

All I want from sharing this is for some selfish people I just read the comments of on here to consider another point of view.

  • You’re disgusting.

    Shame on you.

    • I hope you don’t mean me. I’m not trolling anyone here. That was my yesterday and it wasn’t fun! So if you are referring to me then right back at you! If not I suggest try expressing yourself with more than five words to alleviate any confusion.

    • I also suggest I learn how social media actually works! I have been informed that if you mean’t me you would have clicked reply. I apologize for my ignorance. :]

  • This is a really dirty move sony. I don’t like this at all. I won’t be supporting this game now. I’m cancelling my preorder. I was really excited for this game too. But seeing how you’re handling this, and how completely anticonsumer this is, I can’t do it in good conscience. Even if it means missing out on what might be a good game. It’s been tarnished by your greed, and the entire game will suffer because of your overreaching exclusivity. Spiderman could’ve been a main character in the story, with tons of content. But you killed that. Horrible mistake. You will pay for it too.

  • This is absolutely disgusting business practice. Hard pass on this game.

  • I’m 100% not buying this for my Ps4 Pro (Biggest joke of an upgrade in gaming history) just to play as Spiderman. I’ll be playing it on my Xbox One X where I can experience REAL 4k and faster loads. Plenty of people feel the exact same way, they won’t be strong armed into buying it for a specific platform due to exclusivity BS. GFY Sony ;)

  • Lol!!! Let’s Goooo

  • Spiderman will not be part of the main game but a off shoot dlc mission set that has no effect on the game at all. Look at it as a this is what spiderman did while main story happened

  • gg

  • Agradable

  • I was most likely going to buy this game on PlayStation. After this announcement, I won’t be buying at all.
It’s these kinds of dated and anti-consumer tactics that are killing the PlayStation (and most other Sony) brands. I’ve always been a huge advocate of PlayStation, bought the PS4 day one and ended up buying two more during its lifespan and I’m a single guy with no family. I don’t really have any intent of buying a PS5 at this point and this has made a strong case for me to stay away from Sony all together. So congrats on your greed losing yourself some money Sony

  • This is an insult to all gamers… no matter what console you play on.

Crystal dynamics should be ashamed of themselves for locking gamers out of content THAT THEY PAID FOR just to stuff their wallets with more money!!!

I hope for crystal dynamics that this exclusivity is only a time gated or else their reputation will be destroyed.

If u see this please think about what exactly is happening here and act!

    This **** is unacceptable.

  • Nice😁

  • Sorry my grammar. I don’t write well when I’m tired. lol
