The Last of Us Part II sells more than 4 million copies

Naughty Dog’s gripping follow-up is a hit with fans.

We’re delighted to report that The Last of Us Part II is now the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive ever with more than 4 million copies sold through as of June 21. This milestone would not have been reached without the support from our amazing fans, so on behalf of everyone at SIE, thank you!

Naughty Dog has created an experience that truly transcends the category with The Last of Us Part II. They have honed their craft for years and have once again set a new bar for what is possible through interactive entertainment. The Last of Us Part II represents large scale innovation in gaming with a great blend of excellent gameplay mechanics and masterful storytelling. All of this came together to deliver a generation defining experience and the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive.

Of course we must celebrate the entire team at Naughty Dog who made this achievement possible. Neil Druckmann, Vice President of Naughty Dog and Director of The Last of Us Part II, wanted to share this message with you all:

We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar.

The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone.

We strive to bring you unique, engaging experiences and while we look towards the next generation, there are still a ton of great games coming to PS4. That includes two fantastic PS4 exclusives in the very near term: Marvel’s Iron Man VR on July 3, and Ghost of Tsushima soon after on July 17.

  • Congratulations, roll on Ghost of Tsushima.

    • News sites are getting it wrong, it’s 4 million sold through in THREE days. The game released June 19th and it sold 4m through June 21st, 3 days.

By comparison Spiderman was the previous record holder with 3.3 million in 3 days. The Last of Us 2 obliterated Spiderman. Mid 90’s Metacritic and the best selling PlayStation exclusive ever. The game is a hit critically and commercially, it’s the finest game i have ever played. Congratulations Sony.

    • Well done Neil and everyone at ND. I’m only about 8 hours into the game (I’m a very slow player) but I am loving it.

It would be awesome if TLOU, TLOU2, U1-4 got an update for PS5 launch. Would be a great reason to replay them all.

    • Bedhead

All PS4 exclusive are part of the backwards compatible list as far as I last saw.

    • @SolaceCreed

All PS4 games are Backwards compatible.

What behead1 is asking is for an enhanced version of those games for PS5. Similar to what M$ is doing with Gears5 on XB series X.

It would be awesome is Sony does the same with most of their 1st party catalogue.

      GOW 4k 60fps :)

    • from one epic to hopefully another

    • @Heavenly_king

No, I think you’ll find Sony said at launch MOST of the top 100 PS4 titles will be backwards compatible. They hope the rest will be available post-launch, but all games are subject to Publisher/developer participation.

They haven’t even confirmed if PSNow will have the selection of games that PS4 currently has ot even if it’ll make the jump to PS5 too.

  • Good game and i liked a graphic and gameplay this game is best game i played and thanks for making this best thing in my life

  • What an achievement! Can’t wait to see sales numbers after like, a month lol. I wonder if there will be a small spike after PS5 launches from those that are waiting to play it on the better console lol. I am almost done with my 2nd playthrough now, JUST got the Platinum in the game and it honestly doesn’t surprise me to see it doing so well :)

  • GOOOOD! I got the Platinum last night during a superspeedy second playthrough.

What a ridiculously good story, absolutely nailed the soul destroying nature of hatred and how residual trauma can make letting go almost impossible.

  • BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh my God the haters must be filling up oceans with those tears lol. Great job ND. Loving the game, kinda bummed we not getting DLC this time around.

    • their tears, my nourishment

    • I think they’re going all out on the standalone MP. Which, as someone who doesn’t like MP, is disappointing for myself.
I hope it’s better than Factions for the people that are interested though.

    • lol wut? I hate the game (its story, anyway) but this isn’t surprising or upsetting in the least. It was always going to make major bank, simply by virtue of being a sequel to The Last of Us. That doesn’t make the criticisms any less valid.

    • True. The fact that the criticisms are idiotic makes them less valid. ;)

  • Very well deserved ! I like the story, especially the second half ! How you expand the lore, wow, I was impressed !
And gameplay wise, it was so so good, I enjoyed a lot !

    Previous records (sell-through = to consumers) :
God of War – 3.1M in 3 days
    Spider-Man – 3.3M in 3 days

  • Thanks to misleading trailers and paid reviews.

    • You’re pretty upset that your misinformation spreading hasn’t reaped the results that you thought it would. Dry your crying eyes, poor little baby girl.

    • @xSoftAssassin Why is it allowed to praise the game to heaven but not allowed to criticize? All the 10/10 ratings are bought and ridiculous (every media outlet was only allowed to review only the first half of the game), no game in the world deserves such ratings, there is always something to improve.

    • @barrow40 You are lying by saying that “all the 10/10 rating are bought and ridiculous”. I respect your opinion if you would rate the game lower. But you are spreading misinformation to say that the reviews were bought. ND doesn’t pay me anything and I would rate this game a 10/10. Obviously there are small things I would point out for improvement – but even so, this game was so impressive and fun and powerful of a story and game. That’s my opinion and the opinion of many others

    • @barrow40 You are wrong, the reviewers reviewed the game like any other games and the review scores were based on the whole game. They were not allowed to write review about the second half of the game prior to release to avoid spoiling the story but after release they could write updated review that talk about the whole game including spoilers

    • As someone how had the review embargo information given to him what you are saying is false. We couldn’t talk about the second half of the game but out score could absolutely factor it in. We weren’t told that we can only score it based on the first half. Also no one gets paid to do give a certain score. Stop with your fake information.

    • If that’s the case then I’m sorry, but it still doesn’t deserve that many high ratings. Ok, the game looks great, but the gameplay and story are just OK (actually the story is not worth mentioning). So a 7/10 or at max. an 8/10, but never so many 10/10 ratings, nobody can deny that this does look a bit fishy.

    • What you’re forgetting though, is that reviews are just opinions. I’ve only given it 4/5 over on Truetrophies, but doesn’t mean my opinion of the game more correct than someone who has a 10/10.

    • You really hate the myth of woke culture, don’t you? Yes, yes you do.

  • Well deserved! It’s GoT’s turn now!

  • SO undeserved for such marketing bait company. + It’s a trash game so

    • Here we go… I was surprised to see only positive comments.
Haters gonna hate hate hate. Did you play the game at least??? If so, then I wonder what you consider to be a good game (Fortnite, probably) if this one is trash.
This is the best game i’ve ever played, right after The last of us 1.

    • Look at his profile, he don’t have the game and still hate on it pfff

    • The Last of Us 2 is the best game i have ever played as well. Truly incredible.

    • It’s far from trash. Not perfect but not trash.
Maybe you need to find something that makes you feel better other than trying to start arguments with people on the internet.

    • Sorry that you did not like the game, FearedElexid, but the game is a masterpiece even if you didn’t like it. Complex characters, great acting, creative gameplay, beautiful environments, and a very compelling story. I rate this game as a 10/10, and I am happy to have a respectful conversation with anyone about the details why

    • How can you say it is a trash game when you haven’t even played it! So since you haven’t played the game it’s a moot point.

    • Dont feed the trolls

    • Marketing bait company…. yeah, go play some more Call of Duty.

    • You havent even played the game, but nice try :)

  • Hi haters. How do you feel now?

    Important?

  • “B..bu…but get woke go broke!”

The haters aren’t gonna like this news lol.

    • I’ve seen far more “HATERS MAD” comments than actual haters getting mad. Nobody rational is surprised by the game making bank. That was inevitable, regardless of quality or “wokeness”.

And “get woke go broke” especially doesn’t apply if you don’t market the work as such. The vast majority of those purchases weren’t from people who read/watched the leaks, so how would they have any idea the degree to which ideology drives its narrative?

  • Holy cow! So deserved! Yet another enormous critical and commercial success for Naughty Dog and PlayStation. Undeniably game of the year too. A game that will be talked about for year to come. Well done my fellow PS4 people. Let’s always support masterpieces like this.

  • Awesome accolade. The Last of Us was such a gripping story, to see how it developed was an inevitable draw.

I’m just past the Hospital for those that know the game (not a spoiler for those that don’t) – and so far, while different tale than the 1st , its still gripping in a way that Naughty Dog knows how.

  • Congratulations! 🎉

Thank you for this beautiful game. All of your hard work is very appreciated. You guys are the best. 🍻

  • Great news ! can’t wait to play it :D

  • It funny lot of hateful people continue hate the games but like I said nothing can’t stop greatness.

TLOU 2 made the games of the year and I know lot of hateful people are going to mad as hell lol

  • I’m playing it, so far the gameplay is excellent, superb, but the story is poorly written with forced shock value and a politically injected hidden agenda, disappointed to say the least.

  • This has by far been one of the greatest games I have ever played. I have been thoroughly impressed by the combat and the storyline. The graphics are amazing. I was initially disappointed about the delays but it feels like it was well worth the wait. I am huge Naughty Dog fan. I have played the first last of us and the entire Uncharted series. Additionally I own a whole bunch of Don’t first party games like Horizon, Spider-Man Shadow of the Colossus and God of War 4 to name a few. And I’m always impressed by them. However Last of Us 2 has raised the bar to whole new standard. Thank you Don’t for your hard work. Congratulations on the milestone and more to come.

  • The PlayStation has enormous power where any other console that orbits nearby will be destroyed, and the power that PlayStation has in this generation is even more destructive, Do you know the name of power?

    Only on PlayStation

  • Now if Sony would just remaster Socom 2 and Socom Combined Assault for the PS5!

  • This ‘hit with fans’ currently holds a 3.4 user score on metacritic, up from 3.3 after thousands of 0-1 scores were deleted. Critic scores mean about as much as nothing as to protect their early sample releases they have to bend a knee.

This game isn’t a hit, it’s not good. Ford Explorers are some of the highest selling vehicles in America and are proven to be one of the most dangerous, unreliable, and fastest degrading SUV’s to date.

Sony and naughty dog lied, used false advertising, and changed their own rules to sell a game that when users discovered the truth about how horrible it really is, tried to return it and despite meeting the criteria to do so we’re denied.

Bye bye ps5, not buying you.

    • Oh my God, thank you. It’s been a dreary day and you just made me laugh a lot.

Comedic genius, man, seriously. And with that fake serious attitude, too! God, I wish I had that kind of humor or skill with words. And the way you make it seem like the review bombing by those triggered man-babies had any kind of meaning… Amazing, absolutely amazing!

I hope you’re having a great day, probably with your beautiful wife/girlfriend – the funny guys always get the prettiest girls.

      Thank you again!

“Discovered the truth about how horrible it really is”… 🤣 I’m still cracking up here…

    • The game was awesome for many reasons. Sorry that you didn’t like it- I loved it and so did every person I know who played the game. I respectfully disagree with your opinion. No need to bash other people’s reviews of the game being good. It is a good game.

    • No game ever has gotten as many user scores on Metacritic as this game. You know why that is? Because those user score aren’t even legit. It’s nothing but the audiences of the angry Youtubers who are going there and flooding it with 0/10 scores. Heck it had like 30,000+ on the day it came out when no one could’ve even played it yet. Yeah really good source you got there.

    • It’s called getting review bombed. And I don’t deny there are some publications that are biased but I doubt that many would risk their credibility just for one game especially seeing as how those same publications panned other sony exclusives.

    • Lol, you do realize that 90 % of the user reviews havent played the game right? Most of them were posted 2 minutes after release. But nice try, you go over to Xbox, bye bye :)

  • Well done, Naughty Dog! This game is a masterpiece! It is so difficult to follow up such a beloved game (TLOU) with a sequel that does it justice. This game was terrifying and emotional and so uncomfortable to play at times, and I loved it! All the haters gonna hate on social media, and I respectfully disagree with them since not one has made an argument that holds water IMO. This game was beautiful, the acting is incredible, the characters are complex and interesting, the story is powerful, and the tie-ins to the first game were clever and satisfying. Thank you for making this game and all of the countless hours of hard work from the ND team! We love you all! ❤️

  • And it’s gonna set the record for trade ins because Neil druckman and the game is trash. Shame on Sony for allowing drug use, glorifying violence. If you’re a parent. Don’t let your kids buy this game.

  • I am about to get TLOU2 Platinum i’m loving the game! And it is a true masterpiece!

  • Still haven’t finished the game. I am really taking my time and want to take it all in.
It’s a strange time we are living in and this game presents a tough world, to be honest I wasn’t looking forward to play it because of that. Still I do and I am happy I did. All characters are amazing in how they are written, acted and presented. The beauty of the world is amazing. Every home and store, every area tells a story. I also like to read the notes as they tell the story from different groups, perspectives and it all boils down to one thing, we are all humans and want to be happy.
It’s a masterclass of digital art on the highest level and I want to thank all the wonderful people who worked on it tirelessly. I wrote on my facebook I loved comics, books, television and movies, but games are the best. Games like The Last of Us are the best as they add interactivity and that makes a world of difference.

  • Loved it. Felt mentally drained by the end. I just wish there was more dialogue between Ellie and Abby

  • Absolutely deserved but to be honest haven’t quite finished it yet and no idea how long I have to go I donf want it to end well done troy ashley neil and all the nd team bloody amazing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

  • Congrats to Sony and most of all naughty dog for creating such an amazing masterpiece! Can’t wait to see what masterpiece you have in the works for the PS5 . Keep being the best . Thanks guys !!!

  • It’s an amazing game and it deserves all the success. I’m finishing up the Platinum trophy for it now.

  • No disrespect but one of those coppies was my digital pre-order but.. I’m having rediculous cut seen glitches on my ps4 pro I’m so sad.. to say that I’m not having fun with TLOU2 rt now plus having to keep away from spoilers 🙏1.03 patch for the kid?

  • Personally I thought the game was terrible, gameplay was amazing, and the game world was absolutely breathtaking. But the story, in my opinion was horrible, character were great but the way certain story elements were delivered it felt like not much thought was put into the story. Disappointed in how the game turned out. Needless 2 say last of us part 1 is still my all time favorite game

  • Not sure who to believe over this – could be a number of false reviews on all sides and as for professional reviewers I tend to treat their opinions with a pinch of salt. I will say this though – if it is like the first game I will be giving it a miss – not my kind of game – but thats just my opinion 😁

    • It’s let down by its storyline a tiny bit after the midway point, but combat and tone are the same, so it may not be for you.

  • that’s pretty low

  • You can’t stop this.

  • Just finished playing LAST OF US in March, then heard a part 2 was coming out. LOU 2 is the First game I purchased in yrs. I actually Just started to play LAST OF US 2, Game started alittle slow, catching u up to speed with some story telling. About to head out of camp after Tommy. I kinda get the whole Joel thing, so not completely disappointed. I have a 4 day weekend. If my wife and teenage kids can get along without me, I’ll be putting in some serious hrs. So let the story (ACTION) begin.

  • It’s still a pile of garbage. One site said it perfectly. TlOU2 is a misery simulator. Drunkman deserves a golf club to the head for ruining the franchise. There is a petition for a rewrite on change.com that is gathering steam. We can only wish.

    • Doubt you even played it. For me the story is amazing. Need some brain to understand it. You should play something else.

  • I’m enjoying the TLOU 2 game, and the limited edition PS4 Pro it was bundled with. Naughty Dogs are truly masters of their craft. Congrats!

  • I am about 15 hours in and I am on the edge of my seat! I love this game and Naughty Dog will forever be among the game Gods!!

  • Congrats Endure and Survive

  • We will see.
We haven’t really seen the sales yet for TLoU2. What we’ve seen so far is hype from TLoU1 spurring sales of its sequel. After the first two to three weeks is when we’ll begin getting a better picture of TLoU2’s success or not. Judging by its user reviews I don’t see it having the same legs as TLoU1, and this doesn’t bode well for a TLoU3, but as I said, we’ll see.

    • 90 % of the reviews are from people who havent even played it, posted 2 minutes after release. User reviews on metacritic are a joke.

  • I literally just beat the game 30 minutes ago. I freaking LOVED it!

Such a fantastic story and amazing gameplay. I only found 4 bugs (1 game-breaking), so very well done!

    What a ride of emotion.
    10 out of 10

  • I just wanted to add that i am not hating on the lgbtq community.

  • Is it good, is it bad, that’s a simple subjectivity, the people vote with their wallets.
Fans will be buy it at launch, good.
Not fans will wait for it on ps+, good too.

The only thing is if it get a ROI? Yes, good I’ll have other ps5 AAA games. It doesn’t damn, hope won’t cancel other AAA games in the pipeline.

  • Congratulations to Naughty Dog!
I just finished my second playthrough of the game and I loved it even more than the first. Knowing the whole story then replaying with that knowledge made it hit even harder in some places, and I really didn’t think that would be possible.

    Bring on Factions!

    • Really can’t wait to play Factions, with those graphics, gameplay, crafting…!

Hoping for a coop mode too against AIs infected and maybe mixed “players” humans… :)

  • This is just the first week, I’m predicting Last Of Us part 2 will be the studio’s best selling PS4 title ever

    • Maybe so but this is also their worst game so far
I see why Sony doesn’t refund money. I feel more than 1/2 sold people woul be looking for a refund. It’s a beautiful game but is also an extremely buggy mess the story is horrible. Naughty Dog and Sony should be ashamed of this. It is almost as bad as Fallout 76.

  • o! Really?
    How about this week?
