Players’ Choice: Final Fantasy VII Remake Voted April’s Best New Game

PS Blog readers celebrated Square Enix's masterful retelling of the JRPG classic, catapulting it to the top of the polls and earning it a Players' Choice award.

Final Fantasy VII Remake clearly struck a chord with fans worldwide last month, securing a resounding win in April’s Players’ Choice poll. Square Enix’s ambitious reimagining brought in nearly three-fourths of the total votes, while Resident Evil 3 and Streets of Rage 4 filled out the top three for the month.

Welcome back! April 2020 saw the return of familiar franchises like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Resident Evil 3, Trials of Mana… hell, even Streets of Rage snuck in at the very end of the month with its first new game in over 25 years! But don’t let the big names steal all the attention — smaller experiences like Biped, Moving Out, Below, and Telling Lies are worth your time, too.

We’ll keep the polls open until Sunday, May 10 at 11:59pm Pacific this time, so get those votes in before then. Let us know who you voted for in the comments!

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

  • I’m going to vote for FF7 Remake but man did April have a ton of great games. Sakura Wars, Streets of Rage 4, Telling Lies, and Moving Out all deserve praise too.

    • Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake for me.

    • If Final Fantasy 7 remake wasn’t in the running it would definitely be streets of rage 4. That was a surprise and its actually just as much fun as the originals. It was a classic like final fantasy 7 back in its day. Too bad it went up against the all time favorite FF7R

  • FF7R blew me away completely. The soundtrack is completely versatile compared to it’s past games and the characters feel so raw and complex. The gameplay is also extremely engaging and requires you to actually learn it…You don’t just hack and slash your way through. I love the new story shift and how it ties into Advent Children and the spin-off games. I’m just completely in love with this game.

    • Man, I hope you didn’t just spoil FF7R’s ending. I’m so close to finishing… haha

    • I like the Ending of FF7 Remake very much. It does mean going forward that elements of the story will change in a good way.
      Anyway.
I’ve been thinking about the PS5 and how to make it better.
I’ve made the suggestion in the past to have the ability to replace the GPU for a stronger GPU, rather than just releasing a PS5 Pro, forcing people to invest in another console and repurchase all the hardware and have diminishing return on the investment compared to just swapping the GPU.

Now that I know you’ll be using APUs instead, rather than replacing the current chip, I would highly recommend an expansion port for a GPU chip. Just have a socket on the motherboard for an extra GPU like you would with a CPU in a motherboard.

I’ve seen these APUs in action and the performance is mind blowing for the price, if you add a GPU On Top of the APU, the Gains are phenomenal.

I know you’re launching the PS5 this year, but you can make a revision really quick especially since this year will be very limited supplies anyway.

Then people could buy these GPUs to add on the PS5. If it had extra RAM too that would help too.
Revisions to the PS5 can be made for future PS5 consoles.

    • To erosfortones – his interpretation of the ff7 ending is all hard speculation. There are many ways that the ending can be interpreted and he just “spoiled” what he believes it is. Just for a frame of reference, i completely disagree with his interpretation.

    • I honestly believe, and I’ve said this on my stream of the game, that they are building up to not killing Aerith.

I think all this insane stuff about the fates (And I haven’t even finished the game, I’ve just had it spoiled) really sounds like they’re coming up with a crazy mind bendy story reason for why things are going to play out different this time.

And here’s the thing. The whole point of the FInal Fantasy 7 Aerith death was that no one saw it coming. It was like the biggest surprise in gaming history. I think they wanna do that again, but this time everyone knows the twist, everyone is expecting her to die. I think they are going to shock us by her living.

    • I would even go so far as to say that’s how the next game ends. Could be the third game, but I think they wanna get there as fast as possible, so less people like me have time to figure it out.

We’re going to get to the temple of the ancients, and that weird crystal cave place and Sephiroth is gonna descend from the cieling and something weird and crzy is gonna happen and we’ll all be expecting her to die, but she wont and thats how the game will end and it will blow everyones minds and everyone will be desperate to play the next game because no one will know what the heck will happen next.

  • Man great games out this month. But I’m going with FF7 Remake. Its been decades in the making and didn’t disappoint. Except now I cannot wait for the next. They need to do remakes for FF IV and FF VI. Please make it happen Square.

  • Everybody is going to vote FF7 even though it’s a remaster and therefore is not technically NEW. Which makes this poll redundant.

    • It’s not a remaster, it’s a remake. Big difference.

    • “Remake” and “Remaster” are 2 different things. This FF7 REMAKE is a whole new game in itself.

    • It’s a remake as stated in the title of the game, not a remaster. It has many, many changes from the original. Remasters are the same game with slightly better graphics.

    • The thing is…if you’ve checked out the game you would know that it IS new

    • I don’t know why people keep getting remastered and remake mixed up. It’s far from a remaster.

    • It’s got the word “REMAKE” in the title. How you get the word “Remaster” from the word “Remake”?

  • I choose FF 7 REMAKE, the game is not a Triple A level, but is SSS level…..I hope this game will become standard quality for FF series

  • Ff7 all day long. Epic game.

  • FFVII for the win.

  • FFVIIR hands down is going to win this pole by a mile and a half.

  • Best Game but i can’t wait for next chapters :). I have hope they will came on PS4

  • I chose FF7 cause it’s the only one I’ve played the most

  • I’m aware of all the cool games out there, but Final Fantasy VII Remake is definitely the one worthy of my vote. I loved every single detail of that game.

  • FFVIIR all day

  • without a doubt final fantasy Vll is very good and is a good remake and with excellent graphics but resident evil 3 is short but has a good experience but it would be final fantasy Vll.

  • I’ll definitely go for FF7. It was such an awesome experience to see the beloved characters in a new light. Square really did a good job. They really made the original characters to be even more likable then the original, which I didn’t think it would be possible. While I do dislike some of the decisions, I can’t ignore that I had an blast playing and can’t wait to see what they will do with part 2. The OST alone deserves an award.

  • even though i’m also a resident evil fan, ill pick ff7r not because i’m a big ff fan but because i love the game tobe remade again and see it with the current graphics engine

  • Man, RE3 is super funny and has a great gameplay…
But FF7R is amazingly gorgeous!!! it is made with so much love based on the original and yet it takes freedom to add fresh new mechanics, characters and boost the personalities of its main protagonists. I love it.

  • Ok, I must be blind, where do we vote???

  • Aside from the inconsistency with the textures FFVIIR is perfect

  • I know I might be late with this post.

  • Please reply, why street of rage4 game was not released on the Saudi account

  • My Pick: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Runner Up: Resident Evil 3 Remake

  • I voted for Sakura Wars! 😷

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake by far for me.

  • FF7 hands down even know it’s not the exact game from when I was 15 I was still impressed by it and can wait for the other disk to come out and continue with the store line

  • Final fantasy XII remake.The Best🌹🥀

  • I’m having a lot of fun playing STREETS OF RAGE 4! 🙌🏻 One of the best games I’ve played as a kid including the 1 through 3 on the Sega Genesis. 4 is by the best new games of April 2020 👏🏻😎

    • Same here, been playing it daily since it’s release! Just a feast for the eyes in this current CG graphics gaming world.

  • FF7R and Trials of Mana.

  • Iam an simple man, streets of rage 4 is my vote!

    • Your right I love the new stuff but old school at heart streets of rage 4

    • SOR4 got my vote too, although i’m sure FF7 has been great from what my friends have been sayin. At the same time, many of my fellow old Genesis/SNES buddies have bought SOR4 too haha.

  • RE3 remake… biggest disappointment ever. A full game that can be completed within 1 hour. How badly Capcom screwed this one up is beyond me.

As for the rest, easy decision: FF7 Remake.

  • FF7 Remake FTW ! Where do I vote ?

  • FF7R for sure hands down. Never played the originally and the mechanics are ripped from FFXV but this game is true to it’s name of a “Remake” – something old, something new, something for everyone!

  • Final Fantasy 7:Remake was amazing… running away with my vote!

  • I vote for Final Fantasy VII Remake. ilove the graphics and the story especially Cloud and Tifa. I cant wait for the next part of the Remake.

  • I vote for Resident evil 3 because the best ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻

  • Final Fantasy Vll Remake for sure! I was a bit skeptical at first but then I realized there was a lot more to the game! P5R would have to be a close second for me!

  • Being relatively new to the Resident evil series with last year remake of two I was hyped for 3, alas I was a little underwhelmed but still a solid game and would defo recommend it. I’m also new to the final fansty series, I have only ever played a finish 15 so I decided to give 7 even though initially I wasnt hooked on the prospect of the game. Then I played it. A platinum trophy later and now I cant get enough Final fantsy, I need more!

  • Hope their was more than one choice but from my side my best recommendation goes to Resident evil 3, streets of rage 4, and (Final Fantasy 7 remake) the one I will get it next month. 😎

  • Where is persona 5 the royal??

  • My vote: Streets of Rage 4

Reason: 100% pure fun for up to 4 players

  • Ah yes FF7R and Trails of Mana for me.

  • So reading all the comments I guess they should just close the poll already seen how we all know who won April.

  • I picked Final Fantasy 7 Remake, this game was a blast to play with it’s combat, the characters, the voice acting, the environment of Midgar, the boss fights, the story, and it’s soundtrack. This game has been a roller coaster from its moments. I love how each characters are much more developed then ever before, even side characters like Avalanche got more developed with not just their personality, but each of them have their own origins. This is the best final fantasy game I have played, it improved the errors of past problems from XIII and XV, this is a gamble that have payed off in the end and I hope to see Square pull this off again in part 2.

  • I LOVED FF7 Remake. But I have a love for the survival horror monster/zombie slaying inventory managing greatness that RE3 put me through. I can only hope that RE Code Veronica gets the attention & rightful remake done right it deserves. Keep up the Resident Evil titles coming in full swing and Im a happy customer.

  • Eu votei em FFVII Remake, pois o jogo está incrível e viciante. Estou ansioso para jogar a próxima parte!

  • FF7R is the best game THIS YEAR thus far

  • My vote definitely goes to Final Fantasy VII Remake. It may just be a remake of Midgar only but the characters, combat and expanded story made this game feel like a whole game. Plus that ending was mind-blowing. Shout-out to Trials of Mana as well. It’s a fantastic remake like FFVIIR. Square Enix really nailed both remakes of their classic JRPGs
