Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • What an absolute thing of beauty. I was already hyped. Now I need it. Looks so sexy.

  • Amazing!👍👍

    (I’d just add colored buttons)

  • The PS5 was going to be my first game system since a Nintendo 64. I am seriously considering another system, just on how ugly this controller is.
Please, at least consider an all black model.

  • Sorry playstation but this controller looks more like an XBox controller!! I don’t like it at all!! You need to go back and make it look more like your original controller and not a look alike!! Be original!! Not a follower!! Thumbs down!!😪😪😪😪
    👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

  • I really hope I can use my newly purchased back button!?!

  • Hey, will this somehow be compatible with PS4 also?

  • the controller dosent look right not like a comfortable playstation remote but hopefully playstation will hold onto there signitcher comfortable controller. ps hat x box controls.

  • I love Playstation since Ps1, but now I am very sad.
I don’t know if it’s only me or what, but I am loyal to old design, in my opinion the old frame was way better.. what can I say about the new one.. it looks like xbox skin…not cool at all.

    • search on youtube: Giuseppe Spinelli, “PlayStation 5 To be Unveiled Soon” ! this is how the new controller should look! Hire him, and remake! Please! Or just release a PRO edition with this controller..

  • I hope this is some kind of prank.. it look like x box controller skin..

  • OMG!!! The PS5 Gaming Controler is SO COOL!!!!

  • Add paddles to the back! I don’t want to buy another Scuf controller for $300

  • i love the features but in reality it looks a bit like a xbox remote and honestly im not too fond of that

  • Glad to see that we’ve FINALLY switched over to USB type C, and the removal of the headphone jack and that completely useless auxiliary port. I’m excited for the new haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that will really add to the experience. I miss the light bar on the front of the controller, though I know it takes a lot of space. It doesn’t look quite as comfortable as the DS4, but I hope it is just as ergonomic as its predecessor and not as bulky in the hands as the Xbox controller. Starting my gen 9 fund now.

  • I’ve been an avid gamer since NES, and I’ve been an IT professional for many years. I’m a really disappointed that they basically made a playstation version of the Xbox controller. That being said, I do really like the color scheme and LED placement. I wish they could’ve done the same thing with the dualshock controller. I’m hoping the PS4 controller can at least be paired with the new system, but I highly doubt it. I know why they did the new shell, they had to make room for all the new features, but I can’t really see the point in the haptic feedback in a controller (haptic feedback vest is a different story), and the addition of a built in mic is just ridiculous, people who can afford the system and afford a decent headset.
What I’d really like to talk about, and I hope this gets heard by some execs with influence, is the rest of the system. First, I’d like to say that I’m thoroughly impressed with hardware specs, SSDs, and backwards compatibility. It’s the first time since PS2 that playstation has truly taken a step in the right direction and I’m just as excited for this as I was the PS2 (and I was teen then, so that I was extremely excited). People are speculating on price around $500 at release, I disagree. We’re probably looking more at between $600-$800. The GPU and SSDs alone are worth about $400 retail on specs. Add the system board, PSU, RAM, chassis and controller, I can easily see a $600 or even $700 price tag and to me, that is completely reasonable. One thing though that I never hear people talk about is the FANS and cooling system. This is the one area I have concerns about. My PS4 Pro constantly fires up to insanely high RPMs to cool the unit down and then goes quite again. I’m usually wearing noise cancelling headphones turned all the way up and I can still hear the fans sometimes. My system sits in an open area and does not have any extreme external temperatures (usually 75 degrees Fahrenheit) and no obstructions. I’m hoping the SSDs help with the cooling, but I feel they need to invest heavily into developing a much more quite system. My PC, which granted does have much more room inside, stays super quite even under heavy loads. So I think if they can handle that issue, this will truly be a remarkable system I will be proud to own.

  • Looks a lot like an xbox controller. I have never cared for those and this looks bigger than a DS4 which is already at the limit. I guess I will see how it feels but this is not exciting me.

  • Really nice controller! Can not wait to see what the future of Playstation holds, and I will be there on day one. Greatness!

  • Please Sony, hear the community, return the colors of the buttons, it’s way more cool. For me the ps5 controller os futuristic, but without “life”.

  • Me personally I love this look for a controller, it looks so much more futuristic and modern.
    Keep up the great work!

    • Its and X Box Duke controller…it lives in the past…the future is haptic gloves or just sensors. Controllers are like a babies toy.

  • this is pretty cool looks comfortable

  • I don’t want an xbox controller. Please change it back. I will not buy that, I will switch to PC.the games are cheaper there anyways and I have more options for control. I have purchased every one of your consoles brand new within the original year of release however with the constant garbage you’re putting out on this new console like that ugly v and that putrid replica of an Xbox controller I don’t think I’ll be able to buy this console.

  • TenThousandCrabs

So, I’m kinda digging the controller. But… it kinda looks like an xbox controller…

  • It looks very much like a version of the old X Box Duke controller. Really nice looking and I hope it feels good, especially for people where the Duke was the right size, like me. I, however, think this is still a very old concept. Controllers should be a thing of the past by now, with all the motion sensing tech in Occulus Rift S and the Valve VR controllers. PS5 should have a hand free system with tactile gloves and sensors. It isnt too hard to do and if you made the gloves haptic, omg, it would make this shine apart from the other consoles. This is why I have a PC. I play VR and feel my environment. Granted, there are controllers, but it is more realistic to reach and grab than to mash a button. I own a PS4, but it is not my gaming machine of choice. Perhaps your Station 6 will have this tech, but beware that, as with all consoles, PC will be far ahead.

  • As a player and parent of two, I would rather a black controller and black console. Black is just more appealing to me in general. I feel like the white will show the wear more than the black. That being said, I am still super excited about the PS5 release and am glad that the controller buttons didn’t move around too much – I am to old too learn a new controller!

  • Please have the console have usb c as well!!! Usb c to usb c. Also it would allow me to connect a usb c hub to it.

  • Only complaint I have is did they really not add more paddles to the back of the controller? Like the mkdded controllers? Or the add on pack? Why would you all not incorporate that? Some of the newer games are definitely gonna rely on a few extra buttons that are trying to convert over from pc…

  • I love the design. It IS what they called Future Gaming. By the way, I think you guys really need to add colors back on the 4 buttons, and maybe another color for the PS Home button, as i think it seems a bit plain. Just my two cents. Looking forward to it.

  • Hope the system is available in a sony tv, so it’s all one device. Would be really cool!

  • half the reason I ben so loyal to ps is iv always liked there signitcher controller. please dont change it lookes like a knock of x box thing not cool.

  • Love the look. Now reveal the system darn it!!!!

  • Really don’t like the color scheme. Would go as far to say that I hate it. Would prefer the controller’s body be a solid color (white, black, baby poop brown.. I really don’t care which color it launches with, but the split color scheme just doesn’t work in my opinion) Even worse is the removal of the colors of the face buttons. The Green, Pink, Blue and Red button icons are like a staple of the PS brand and I’m saddened to see them go. Has Sony even UX tested these colorless button icons yet? I’m worried onscreen button prompts will be more difficult to identify without their colors in the image. I already hate quick time events in games and I think they are going to get a lot worse now because I won’t be able to recognize the button I’m supposed to press as quickly without it’s associated color to key in on. Sony please reconsider this design and change it before launch, this color scheme makes the controller look uglier than the PS3 boomerang controller.

  • The two tone is amazing.
But i would like it to be bit more compact design as it looks a bit wide and bulky nit sure.
Also if you could add led on the buttons it would be awesome.
Also we would like an option to buy eitger the black or the two tone. In tge default package.
Nonetheless im sure you guys have made major changes in the inside.
Also increase durability and battery life.

  • Okay, so for those who whine about “they’re insisting on the touch pad blah blah” they HAD to – having promised backward compatibility (at least to the PS4) which used *some* of it so it’s really a must within the design choice.
Personally I am not the biggest fan of the colour but heyho-who cares so long as the pad feels RIGHT, right? Besides…., can’t see them not introducing an all black model they’d be daft not to ($$$).
It does look…. a little bulky but if you compare it side by side with the ps4 pad it actually looks fairly similarish size – sure it’s impossible to gauge purely by pictures! I personally have owned every PS so far hell, multiples of it’s iterations – yes I AM a fanboy, come at me haters! Have spent summers as a kid working my butt off to afford them,…

All in all… whatev’s man – I am looking forward to it all – have saved pennies up in the bank ready to preorder with some arse kicking game!! ( *cough* *cough* Horizon Zero Dawn sequel please and thank you!!!!)

    • I’m a fan boy two who has work hard to have every one as well but they could of gave us a new remote that’s a dream cast remote

  • I love the white/black combo! I don’t get why people hate it. With the blue light bar kinda looks like frozone.

  • You guys should also partner with scuff so that players can also design their controller..
Also try to make it a bit more compact as one of the main reasons every1 liked tge ds4 was because of its compact look. Hope you ll do something about it.

  • Wieso benutzt Sony jetzt das Design von den X-Box Controllern finde ich echt schade das die nicht beim anderen Design bleiben

  • Se ve genial me muero por ver ma consola

  • I like it. when can we pre order?

  • I wonder if it has those extra triggers underneath and if the buttons light up… I wonder…

  • I think it is a decent controller the shape will take a bit to get used to and on the white it will attract dirt like a magnet, also it would be nice if the light bar surrounded the entire touchpad and for it to be flush with the controller but the two tone design is nice

    • i mean it will really take a long time to adjust to the shape the curve near the analog really kept our fingers in place

  • i loved the controller espically the light coming from behind the touch pad which is also essential for the backward compatibility………..but would guys agree that the shape of the dualshock would have been more comfortable?

  • the ps button should have been white and enclosed in that glass maaterial same as the dualshock 4

  • What is that? I want PS design NOT Xbox

  • τέλειο πολύ καλό τό χρώμα Επιτέλους άλλαξε το χειριστήριο μετά από 20+Χρόνια μπράβο sony τώρα να δούμε και την console

  • I hope that it will be PsVR supported. Because it doesn’t have a led on the front. PlayStation please make VR real with the ps5

  • king_Jester88309

As a Playstation player really don’t like the how the ps5 controller looks us players don’t like to have bulky controllers the other stuff cool but I think y’all should go back to the ps4 design for the overall out look of it or make a ps5 controller that looks like the 4 wit all the new stuff just saying

  • Awesome..
Can’t wait to lay my hands on it

  • I like the new gamepad. It looks futuristic and with the added haptic feedback features, it probably will feel pretty advanced too. There’s something about its design that reminds me of that game Portal 2… I can’t quite place a finger on it. On the console side Sony, please resist the urge to make it dual toned. There’s beauty in simplicity… Sense that.

  • Nice
