Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • Oh make this conntrollor compatible with the ps 4
And make it PS4 games backwards compatible

  • Son of a b***h 😱
    What a controller

  • THE_ENDGAME_BOSS

    2 things…

Provide us with the beautiful color options that people are already showing concepts of online. We need multiple color options day 1

Also please sell the controller earlier than the console like you guys did with the Dualshock 4. I loved having the next gen controller in my posession early

  • Woooooooooow :)

  • Ich feier den Controller abnormal stark also wenn der so kommt dann sag ich einfach nur tschüss Xbox.

  • FinFin91 It looks like people who say that Xbox series looks bad, you are probably a kid who likes everything with rgb lights. Xbox looks sleek and elegant. If looking only on the new PS5 controller, I will probably switch to Xbox. The controller already looks so kiddish. And Sony is not going to make a console totally different in style than a controller. PS4 looks great, but I think it’s time ti switch on Xbox.

  • Love the new PlayStation DualSense! 🤓 😍

  • Im gonna be honest that is a very slick design. i like it.
Im very into futuristic and advanced looking technology.

  • I still can’t understand how people can think LEDs are battery drainers. Ove done draw tests on the dual shock 4. That ONE LED diod is so inconsequential to that battery. The rumble motors on standby draw more than that LED being on.

  • I hate that color combination, looks like the upper torso of Toot Braunstein. Seems to be very “inspired” by the Xbox controller and still that useless touchpad. I don’t like it at all.

  • It’s gorgeous! The transparent buttons and directional pad really pop against the matte finish of the white. Very futuristic. While not a fan of the light bar in general I’m wondering if the new VR setup will still be scanning for light to orient what’s happening on screen. It’s done there’ll be more light getting the bar visible to the player than the previous little strip on the touch pad.

Side note, kinda looks like a DS4 and PS3 Boomerang controller had a baby.

  • no lo pueden arreglar para que pueda conectar mi auricular con cable no tengo para comprarme uno inalambrico

  • The integrated microphone isn’t that important, at least for me. However, the design and description of the haptic feedback are awesome. 😎

  • Is it compatible with Back Button Attachment????

  • Looks pretty dope will this get a extra trigger attachment like ps4 dualshock?

  • Controller seems a tad bulky like the Xbox One controller, not liking that too much. I’ll reserve full judgement on the controller until I had have a demo version in my hands at a store. The two tone is new, but don’t know if that white will hold up after a year or two. Triggers look promising. Just hope it isn’t a disaster like the DS4 was far a build quality went. Owned an absurd amount of those controller because they couldn’t last two weeks.

  • Can we keep it Black? Please don’t make the system this color scheme. Black w/ some LED accents would be nice.

  • I really hope to see if they put the buttons on the bottom for the extra remap options to control with your middle fingers.

  • White PS Button is better than the Black color.

  • hey

  • Looks cheap on the pictures, hopefully will be better in hands. Also, black + black should be the default one.

  • sexy

  • My only true concern about this white controller is that it going to get dirty.

    • I’m afraid they’ll get that disgusting yellow-ish stains over time, and if it’s like some mobile phone covers they’re impossible to remove. :/

  • DualSense, love and pride.

Can’t wait to try it out! and can’t wait to see how the PS5 looks!

  • I want to be excited for PS5, but without backwards compatibility for PS3 or PS1 it is a deal breaker for me. I bought an Xbox One so I could play all the way back on so many games and that purchase was a directly result of PS5 not announcing any backwards compatibility outside of PS4. I have been re-buying my essential games on Xbox now so I can play them even on the their new system. So, come on PlayStation, surprise me with better news soon. I don’t want to leave but you aren’t giving me much choice here.

  • I think it is a great design and ergonomics, except for the softness of the joysticks, which should be less smooth for greater control of them. Please don’t take too long to come up with different colors. Thank you for your work and dedication thinking of all audiences.

  • looks great but please bring back the color to the buttons triangle circle square and X
the colors gave the PS4 controller a certain charm to it and also make sure you fix the drifting
and please dont make the charger usb-C keep it the mini one its fine the way it is

  • The controller looks however it wold have looked better if the buttons had a LED lights

  • Interesting. Dig the shape and triggers. Stick placement hasn’t changed. With all of the new features, I wonder how long a charge will last?

On a related note: will the PS5 support control mapping including KB/M options on a hardware level? Or will we continue to be at the mercy of developers to decide how we play.

  • Dimensions please

  • Let’s go baby!!! We need coronavirus to go away and we need a release date!!!!

  • no triggers underneath? after that dual shock add-on I thought they’d become standard.

  • Please I need to know if this jewel will be compatible with PS4.

  • Achei legal, só acho que esse jeito meio arredondado está ficando cada vez mais parecido com o Xbox (isso não me agrada) Playstation não pode pegar as características do xbox

  • Please stop making controllers so expensive. We had an entire generation with the touch pad, the speaker and the mic and no one put it to good use.

  • When are you going to release the price and how the console looks?

  • For the love of everything holy, I hope sony was smart enough to integrate atleast 2 ideally 4 rear/back remappable buttons. If not, the redesign is a complete failure and a great lack of vision.

  • Es clave el nuevo mando,
espero que la ps5 sea mucho más rápida

  • I was hoping it would have back paddles on it as standard.

    Nice looking controller though.

  • I don’t know if I enjoyed the colors yet (maybe I change my mind when I hold it), but the shape is great and the new light position is duper promising. Also, I loved the new PS button. Can’t wait to see the console!

  • Are we able to disable the mic so your spies aren’t listening to us to send us ads?

  • It looks absolutely amazing!
It has that futuristic look yet elegant design. Excellent work, Sony!

  • screwface-franky

I like many different things. But occasionally I dislike many different things, is it normal to feel this way. Does anyone else relate to me.

  • All i want to say is a huge thank you for what it seems to be everything we asked for. Still rechargeable batteries is epic, USB C is epic, new triggers must be epic if its like other controllers, new haptic feedback is epic, mic included is epic, design is EPIC!
I hope you make many different iterations, like the God of War, Spiderman etc that already exist in the internet or at least many different colors.
Now, lets see that console !

  • One thing i forgot to mention is that i would personally prefer if the playstation icons buttons had color. Not the whole button, only the line that defines it

  • Hahaha,,, awesome 👏🏻
Looking forward towards a better tomorrow
PS5 (grinning from ear to ear) 💗

  • please make a red and black version

  • I’m not that keen on it. Hopefully it will be more comfortable than it looks! Should of made it all white or all black. Hyped on the new hardware inside though. Haptic feedback will be class!

  • Looks cool. As long as its bigger than the ps4 controller. My hands aren’t massive, but having larger handles on the controller is just more comfortable for me. I’m excited for the ps5.

  • That is a very sexy looking controller !! Very excited for this to be released !!
