Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • How much is it going to be ??

  • In my opinion this controller would look better in full black. Still it’s not that good looking imo

  • ZaidTheProKiller

All in all, looks amazing and also nice to see something new with the colours. Many may be complaining but I don’t doubt you PlayStation will deliver. Glad to see Type-C charging has been added. Just wondering since the picture doesn’t fully show but, is that a headphone/earphone jack under the ‘mute/turn on’ button for the mic?

Really excited to see what is coming soon, keep up the amazing work.

    • ZaidTheProKiller

Sorry not “complaining”, more like they think they can get whatever new features they want..

  • Dear Sony,

I beg you to leave the controller ALONE. We do not need a controller that looks like Microsoft (Xbox) crap. Some ppl have small hands which is why I rather play PS instead of Xbox.

Please don’t come out with this controller. Instead just make where you can play music while playing the game, more storage, make more games cross over that’s not fortnite, let’s try 2k, madden, cod, racing, fighting games( mortal kombat, tekken, ufc)

Just leave the controller alone please.

  • I wonder that buttons have kind of LED light on them? for classic PlayStation experience
I mean a green LED light for the triangle, pink one for Square and etc. what do you think? I think it would be awsome

    • ZaidTheProKiller

The buttons do look somewhat see-through, so you might be onto something, and even if they aren’t doing that, that sounds really cool

  • Cálmense todos…es solo una versión Beta para ver nuestras reacciones ! Está medio raro ese diseño..

  • Does it support back bottom attachment?

  • Looks awesome!!!!!!😁😁😁

  • ZaidTheProKiller

This got nothing to do with the controller butttt… i was thinking that maybe PlayStation.Blog could be on the PlayStaion phone app, that way we can always just check updates on our phones since we always on our phones.

  • Hopefully the mic is not always-on ;)

  • This is overdesigned. It feels like an xbox + dualshock mutant. I do not like this design.

  • Does the Dualsense 5 work with backwards compatibility with the PS4?

  • where are the back buttons. what material are the sticks. how have you addressed stick tension. how did they miss these things

  • The Design good but the color White with the black no Beautiful
I hope sony make different colors like black or like color 500 Million Controls

  • This create Button looks good

  • How many buttons does it have? Are there any on the back of the controller?

  • The most beautiful controller ever made…

  • Wow, love it!

  • This controller is terrible and very ugly, but i hope that be functional and confortable.

  • I quite like it, sure will need to use it before giving a better opinion but I like:

1- The colors, I can already imagine the special game editions Sony can release of this controller, I do not care much for white controllers personally but I would love a grey/black/red one :)
2- USB-C in order to charge it faster, that is really cool.
3- It looks bigger somehow looking at the pictures alone.

I hope it is does not weight too much more than the DS4 as my tendinitis would cry a little in the beginning until I am used to it.

  • Will you be able to use the new back button attachment? If not will a new compatible version come out? That’s what I need to know

  • I love it so much!
    💛💛💛PS5💛💛💛

  • This is some elite version that thank god I won’t have to own, right? The console will come with an all black controller and colored buttons, right? RIGHT? PLEASE?

  • The color scheme looks like it will bother me when I see it. Hope there’s more options.

  • I really hope you can choose different thumbsticks shapes. I perfer domed like ps3. I also hope it has trigger on the back. I loved the ps4 controller. Remember alot of gamers just like to play hardcore competitive stuff too. We don’t care about technology and such we just want a lightweight controller we can customize. Thankgod for scuff controllers

    • The 3D Audio could be a highly competitive feature, I really want that to be “real” this generation. PS4 had a “TrueAudio” dedicated 3D audio processor too, but it wasn’t utilized much except for PSVR games.

I also want back paddle buttons, and other stuff that Scuf promotes. I respect that you prefer domed sticks, personally my mileage is that domed right sticks slip off. Every DS3 I tried was a nightmare. The PS3 controller was ergonomically crap, didn’t position the palm in a neutral grip and would cause cramps. The DS3 thumbsticks would stick and have a lot of play within the dead zone. This new DSS looks like it might be the best PlayStation controller yet, but the proof will be once we actually have it in hand.

  • It’s like a spaceship and so different from his ancestor but I think we are going to get used to it through out the years!

  • Add the usual colors on the buttons and it’ll be great.

  • New shape and not so thick other then that fine

  • Mr Fox…does it come in black?..

  • Wtf is this??? Xbox 🤔😥😓😰

  • Interesting color scheme. Can’t wait to see how the alternate colors look. And those adaptive triggers sound VERY interesting!

  • Please let my airpods pro work with it and we’re golden. Or any bluetooth headphones. Beats Bose what ever.

    • Would be nice to natively support it.

For the PS4, you can use Bluetooth headphones if you plug a Bluetooth transmitter into a USB port. I use a little one from Creative Labs, but my mom uses a transmitter from Boltune that connects to the optical output. Both support AptX Low Latency, so you don’t have that audio lag/lipsync issue if your headphones are good enough.

  • I have just one question “Does it come in black?”

  • Any hope to make Directional buttons and action buttons be back-lit by extending the light bar?

  • looking good, can’t wait for the console.

  • Kudos for pushing controller design forward, and adding thoughtful features that will increase immersion and ease of use. I am even more excited to see the design of the new console now. Based on this, we may have something very special to look forward to.

  • They should add rear mappable triggers. They add it to the ps4 controller (7yrs later) why not add it to the new DSS?

  • Where to buy?

  • Need Back Button!!!

  • Absolutely beautiful. But pls take your time with the production. With Covid-19, I don’t want you guys (and girls) to rush too hard. I trust you and I love the PlayStation franchise.
    <3

  • Looks pretty neat but something about it doesn’t really say PlayStation. Feels like we’re discontinuing the PlayStation controller legacy. But maybe we need change let’s see how t goes!

  • Dang that’s a nice controller.

  • The arc along the outer edge of the grip looks like it will finally fill my hand! Now, just put paddle buttons on the back so I don’t have to play Claw when I get serious in FPS games.

Really excited about 3D Audio! Nothing is more immersive to me as 3D audio, and I would love a blog post featuring the audio capabilities. PS4 has USB support for stereo headsets, will the PS5 use the PSVR’s binaural processing time create a surround mix to use with any USB headset? Would be incredible!

  • It’s like a spaceship and so different from his ancestor but I think we are going to get used to it through out the years!

  • I would like it if the joystick were interchangeable, and also will the dualsense have pedals like a custom controller does?

  • They could have shown us the new programmable rear buttons, we all know it has them.

  • Dang that is a nice looking controller and all but could you make a transparent version of it. And make it more durable.

  • By that I mean all of them are durable.

  • Woah this looks slick!!! I can’t wait to try this out!!!

  • Why not use C connector? The old connector it’s bad, disconnect easy, the C connector has better adherence
