Celebrating 25 Years of Play

Join us all week at PS Blog and on our social channels for a series of celebrations.

On December 3, 1994 – 25 years ago this week – the first PlayStation made its global debut in Japan. Starting from a humble beginning as an upstart within Sony, Ken Kutaragi and team delivered on a vision to elevate video games as a form of entertainment that everyone could enjoy, and to make a platform for game developers to express their creativity. The original PlayStation sold 100,000 units in Japan on its first day and went on to become the first-ever home console to surpass 100 million units sold globally.

We struck a chord with the gaming community because PlayStation offered experiences beyond what anyone could ever imagine was possible with a home console. From the very start, we opened our arms to developers, providing them with the tools and technology to create beautiful, expansive worlds, and to experiment with new ideas. That approach led to the diversity of games PlayStation is known for, a true hallmark for our brand across multiple generations of hardware platforms.

Over the past 25 years, PlayStation has stood at the forefront of gaming, and I’m honored to have been a part of the team since the early days. As I was helping set up the business in Europe, I remember having to start from scratch with many things, from hiring employees to ordering furniture. Back then, we focused on catering to local markets to ensure that a gamer in Poland would feel a part of the broader PlayStation community just as much as someone in the UK, or Japan, or the U.S. Supported by passionate fans all around the world, our business has grown significantly and our focus on community is more important than ever.

It’s truly humbling to see fans who grew up on PlayStation passing down their love of gaming to their children, who are now playing on PS4.

On behalf of all of us at PlayStation – thank you for taking this journey with us. We can’t wait to celebrate what comes next with you!

But we griped down on are weapons of choice moved through the many adventures and story’s, took on challenges with new and old friend. formed new bonds laughs till we had tears pouring down. Thanks for 25 years of experience points.

  • Happy birthday PlayStation! Im also born on DEC 3rd.

  • Neo DJ Party!!!

  • I was there since Day 1, and Playstation has always stayed #1 for me in gaming! Can’t wait for the PS5!!!

  • Hope to see something special come out as a celebration! It would be awesome if that rumored Legend of Dragoon remake was true!

  • Guys, I’m 37, and I’ve been a Playstation man since the day they came out. I remember my first game being Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. I’m salivating at the PS5. You guys have NEVER disappointed with your products. My wife is a now a Playstation fan and owns her own. She loves to spend time with me online gaming. We have made friends all over the world thanks to Playstation. Keep up the good work!!

  • It’s been our pleasure, thank you!

  • Thanks for the wonderful 25 years of great experiences. I’m so excited for the future. I really hope PS5 is fully backwards compatible with all old PlayStation systems. I would be willing to pay more if it means getting that. Also a thought on the physical copy ownership of games. I know owning the physical copy is usually not the full game or it doesn’t have the updates. I wish in the future there could be a change to PlayStation such as having an option to update physical copies for our collections. Like having all games released in it’s “Final” no more updates form or maybe some kind of cartridges that can be updated. Too me it’s worth it if we can have these physical complete games in our physical collection. Thanks!

  • Thank you for all the great games over the past 25 year. I am excited to see what’s in store for the next 25. Playstation For Life!

  • dear boss of playstation

  • Happy Anniversary PlayStation!! ;)

  • This Console is old as me, all what we have been through… happy anniversary to PlayStation.

  • Twenty five glorious, fantastic years!!! Thank you Sony! Thank you PlayStation! So many memories!

  • I was a PlayStation hater back in the day. Sega all the way for me. Hated PlayStation even more after the less than honest reveal of the PS2 sunk DC sales. But all these years later it’s my favorite place to play. You just can’t beat the quality hardware and all the great, artisanal quality gaming to be had. I’ll puff one in honor of PlayStation tonight. Here’s to 25 more!

  • Are we hopefully getting a ps 25th anniversary theme!!! I’ve always love the ps themes and have them all.

  • This is awesome. Thank y’all for stay in the game this long. Here wishing yall continue success in the years to come.

  • happy birthday playstation may you all have a blessed day and may there be many great years to come can’t wait to see your greatness in 2020

  • Started on PS1 demo disk, playing Einhander and twisted metal and other games.
Then I got the full versions and loved it more.
Eventually got mgs 1 and was set for life lol.

Always looking forward to PS and Sony.

May success come to PS5 and beyond.

  • I was born December 3rd of 1994. In all honesty I find it humorous that playstation is also my favorite gaming console. I wish there was a way I could celebrate my hobby in a new form but I think just relaxing after a long morning shift at work and hopping on my ps4 to play is just the right thing to do. Happy birthday to both of us, playstation.

  • Thanks you playstation the best experience in gaming and 25 years of play for making my childhood awesome

  • Happy birthday 25 years and a good 25 years. Well done guys keep it up as a birthday gift you should bring back some classics like soul reaver or onimisa. Thanks for the hours of fun

  • No free 25th Anniversary theme? :(

  • Happy birthday Playstation! Here’s to many more years of gaming greatness!

Any chance we’ll see some special 25th anniversary products? ;)

I loved the classic PS1-style Dualshock 4 y’all did for the 20th anniversary, and I’m still rocking the 20th anniversary theme on my Vita ; )

    • Hey Blue ma friend…just wanna say that I’m still using the 20th anniversary theme on ma Vita too haha since the very release.

  • Muchas felicidades!! increíble caminó y lo que se viene también será maravilloso

  • It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years! I have a lot of memories tied to the PlayStation brand that still stick with me after all these years. Brov to PlayStation and here’s to 25 more years.

  • Thank you for 25 wonderful years of gaming! I remember waiting in line to buy the Playstation at launch in September 1995 and I still have that same console. Since that day I still own every Playstation system released and am looking forward to the PS5. Here’s to hoping that you continue providing us with quality features and content for many years to come! Making PS5 fully backwards compatible would be the highlight of my day as then I can finally condense all my Sony consoles down to one.

  • I still can’t believe how far gaming itself has come. Been gaming for 21 years and then some and I’ve seen some interesting generations. I’m glad I’ve been apart of the PlayStation Community. The company in itself is dedicated and well received. I look forward to the next 25 and 50 years.

  • I’ve been playing PlayStation since I first purchased mine and I had to turn it over in order for it to work since the ring of metal balls in the center ring where the CD was placed blew up in my face and they flew everywhere. It did not deter me from playing what I believed was the future of gaming. I played my first Resident Evil game on it and I’ve been a fan since. I can’t wait for PS5. I would love a console similar to the Nintendo Switch so I can have portability and carry my gaming experience everywhere. Congratulations on 25 years of gaming excellence.

  • Nice Happy Birthday PlayStation!!…proud to be with PS since the PS1.Have a really long history with PS,cherished memories and there’s no other choice for gaming out there, there never was and the few who understand gaming know that.Well I hope y’all at Sony get back to be the great company you were back on the PS3 days and before and quit this greedy way you started showing with and after the PS4…that’s what I wish for this 25 years anniversary.

Also that thing of passing down our love of gaming to the children…ha so true, feels good indeed.

  • I played Breath of Fire III for the 1st time @ a friends house when I was 10 y/o. That moment will stick w/ me for the rest of my life. As will my loyalty to Playstation. Thanks for all the years of fun, Sony!

  • Congratulations! Here’s to 25 years more and the immediate release of the 25th anniversary theme.

  • Playstation is the only thing that I can never forget. It’s in my blood.
Congratulations on 25 Years of PlayStation.

  • As a former backer that all changed with the PS1 and I’ve never looked back. From classics like Suikoden and DW 7 through God Of War, RE 4 and Uncharted to Days Gone and Spiderman. Thank you Sony

  • Happy 25th, PlayStation!

Such great adventures we’ve gotten through those consoles, and both handhelds, even though I’m a bit down that no Vita successor’s planned, despite previous plans to improve its media space capacity shredded, so I’ve read & thought, Sony still provided time and again with numerous games we’ve all enjoyed. Sure, the 3DS bested Vita, so I would presume a true 9th-gen successor(NOT Switch) to it is likely worthy for Nintendo to make. Don’t doubt that. True handhelds still hold a place in our hearts in history, and still have the potential to keep on going.

To note, Ratchet & Clank, while being an amazing series, had only one game on PS4, a non-canon(yep, true) re-telling of its original PS2 game, also based on the movie that, while enjoyable, flopped big time. I honestly thought there would be more like how it was on the PS2 & PS3 days. Hope the Lombax gets more adventures on PS5. Same goes for Sly Cooper, & others. Really want that, but no more origin retellings, please. We’ve had enough already.

  • Happy 25 to PlayStation & cheers to all the fans who have been here with me since the beginning…

  • Amazing it’s Been So Long, Congrats.
i Hope 2C Old Titles Getting ReReleased,Revamped Or Sequels, Like-

    Power Stone(PSP) For The PS4 Or PS5 =)
