PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Starting today, those of you selected for our beta program will get an early peek at some of the new features coming to PS4 with our next major system software update, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke). If you signed up for the beta and were chosen, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Even if you’re not participating in the beta, we still wanted to give you a quick glance of the key features that will be rolling out with this update. We’re refining the user interface of PS4 even further, and adding highly requested features like external HDD support and custom wallpapers.

External HDD Support

It’s easy to upgrade the HDD that came with your PS4, but if you’re still looking for more storage space on the console, we’ve got you covered. With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilĆ , you now have more space on the console.

PS4 System Software Update 4.50 external HDD support

This is compatible with HDDs up to 8TB in size. You can download and install applications directly to your extra storage, and the saved contents are easily manageable through the settings menu.

Also, all the applications saved in the external HDD will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen so it’s easy to keep track of what apps you launched recently.

Please note: user save files are still stored locally on your PS4 HDD. Only games and applications are stored externally.

Custom Wallpapers

This update adds the ability to set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4’s home screen. Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.

You can also edit screenshots using Photo Mode in Sharefactory to make your one-and-only custom wallpaper.

Quick Menu Refresh

As you may know, in the last system update we overhauled the PS4 Quick Menu feature (the menu that appears after a long press of the PS button on DualShock 4).

This update brings additional improvements to make it even more accessible. Now the Quick Menu will cover even less of your gameplay screen, and you’ll be able to access handy Party features via Online Friends, like creating new parties, inviting friends, and joining parties, without transitioning to the separate Party app. The goal is to keep you in the game — and not stuck in menus.

Simplified Notification List

Before this update, the Notifications app had a variety of tabs on the left-hand side, like Game Alerts, Downloads, Uploads, and more. We’ve condensed all of the tabs to a single simplified list, making it easier to see all of your notifications all at-a-glance.

You can also quickly access the Notification settings from the Options Menu to turn off or customize which pop-up notifications appear on your screen, so you’re only being notified about your top priorities.

Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

We’re adding the ability to post directly into the Activity Feed, which appears in a variety of places across the console, including What’s New. Under What’s New, you’ll see a new option to post things like text, screenshots, and gifs directly into your Activity Feed. You can also tag games or other users to make sure they don’t miss your post. It’s a great way to show off your greatest triumphs.

Tying into this new feature, Live from PlayStation will show screenshots that users uploaded to PSN as a Public Activity, so you can show off your best gameplay moments not only to your friends, but to users around the globe.

3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR

If you’re a fan of 3D movies, and you own PlayStation VR, we’ve got good news — this update adds the ability to view 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR headset. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!

There are more features included in 4.50, so make sure to keep an eye out for additional info, including launch timing, in the weeks to come.

  • Where can i find the wallpaper that is in this post??

  • For ps4 beta firmware 4.5, are you able to move your digital purchases to a Ext. hard drive, connect it to another ps4 with your account, and play them without having to re-download the entire game?

  • Can the external drive be powered by the wall outlet then connected to the console via usb ? Or does it need power through the usb to console to work properly ? Also does it matter if it 2.5 or a 3.5 ?

  • Great update! I’d like to see private video chat for ps camera!

  • one thing its missing is the option to choose other themes Music and Icons Independantly for the Custom Themes other than the Colour. other than that its great. (also an option to crop pictures to use for themes.)

  • i like this new update, but can u add where we can share clips of game play within the playstation messenger

  • You know what would be really cool? If you guys added the ability to render ANY game in stereoscopic 3D, just like the TriDef software does for PC games (look it up if you haven’t heard of it). The lack of 3D capable games for the PS4 is very disappointing, especially since the PS3 had reasonably decent 3D support. I’ll choose 3D over 4k any day of the week.

  • 4.50 is absolutly beautiful. Hope it becomes available for everyone soon. I really look forward to trying it out.

I hope that the External storage is opening the door for 4K HDR and 3D movies downloads from PS Video. I have been waiting for a great 4K HDR and 3D movie source since getting my XBR75Z9D and PS4 Pro in November.

With the upgrades to the quick menu, PS4 is nearly perfect from a gaming standpoint. I hope firmware 5.0 focus’s on some outlining things. I would love to see the Browser overhauled for better HTML 5 support, PDF support, Mouse support, Printer support, the ability to set our home page, and folders for favorites.

It would also be awesome to be able to make Dynamic themes in the Share Factory with the new custom backgrounds feature.

Anyways, PS4 and the PlayStation OS just keep getting better. Keep up the good work!

  • Looking forward to some of these updates, not so much the “all in one ” notifications area, i liked how it was set into catergories.

Definite HELL YES for ext hdd support, but again like others said should of been alot earlier, will we be able to use our own photos as well as screenshots, or just screenshots?

also when is it actually being rolled out for everyone, not just the beta subscribers…

personally i would like to see a larger support for remote play on devices.. not just sony specific or pc..

  • What about the 3D content from sites and youtube and all the 3d games we have on digital form and not on a physical disc (or even digital movies that we own ; ) In the update it says only about blueray …Is it only on the beta version ..that they have the support only for physical discs or will we have to wait after the actual oficial update for another update to have 3d support in the media player as well ?

  • Amazing update. External HD support and direct posting including screenshots on the live feed without FB or Twitter are game changers. Good job

    • So true, they are going directly at Facebook and Twitter with this move. I have been waiting for this for a long time. Now they just need to make this possible via the PS App on Mobile, and they can really make PSN a strong social network.

  • Aby details on the external HDD’s power source, external or USB powered, or both are compatible?

    • You could use either. ….USB powered work just fine. ..I got 2TB hooked up to mine running the beta

    • Nice to know. I’ve been holding back on getting an external HDD for a while. Now I can get one and I know this doesn’t impede in any way. .)

  • I’m still waiting for the web browsers to be updated and support PS VR. You know anything about that?

    • The browser definitly needs to get VR access, and it would be nice if we got 4K and HDR Youtube support via the browser as well.

  • So we are allow to get USB and attach it to the Ps4 for more memory nice!! can’t wait!1

  • I would like to see continued work on accessibility. I have a blind family member, and the screen-reader doesn’t work in all the core apps and menues. I know it isn’t fair to compare you to MS, as they’ve had years on you working on Narrator, but this directly impacts your bottomline. Most families have someone with a disability in them, and since consoles are all too often family choices, so that family member feels included, the Xbox will win out. Also, my blind family member can’t buy movies directly from the console, or buy games as gifts for family members. The Amazon Video app is accessible, which is awesome, but Playstation Vue is not, which seems crazy to me. There are all too many core apps where the screen-reader is inaccessible: what’s new, notifications, friends, and many of the options in the settings menu. If there’s any way I can help forward this effort, please let me know. As a family, we would like to stay commited to Playstation and are willing to work for it.

  • How about a delete option to delete your messages, you have to delete messages individually…….frustrating

    • I like that idea. Also the ability to delete multiple friends at once as well. One by one is slow and time consuming.

  • Will this update will help give the PS4 Pro better 4K support? I have a Vizio M43-C1, and for several months, I could not get 4K, or HDR support; and even though the screen display was upscaled, I couldn’t get the system to work through RGB, even though it detected this display option; and every time I tried selecting it, I never got a signal. I even contacted Vizio to see if it was my TV that was the problem, but I was told that it wasn’t their product, but that it was specific to my PlayStation system.

If anyone can help address this issue, I’d gladly appreciate it.

    • Do you have a PSVR hooked up to your TV? If so, that’s the problem. I had the same issue, and it’s because the PSVR passthrough box does not support HDMI 2.0+ (which is required for RGB and HDR). Only way to fix it is to plug the console directly into your TV… Horrible design imo, since you’ll have to unplug your PSVR and plug it back in constantly.

If that’s not the case and you don’t own a PSVR, make sure you have updated your Vizio TV to the most recent firmware (I believe it’s 3.0.12.2) and you’re using an HDMI 2.0+ cable.

    • See, that’s the thing; even though I didn’t have my PSVR headset connected, through the processor box, and with the HDMI 2.0 cable plugged in from the PS4, through the TV, I still couldn’t get an HDR, and RGB signal. And like I said, Vizio told me that the problem wasn’t with my TV, but with my PS4 Pro system.

I even contacted a PlayStation support agent to help with this issue, and they said that I would have to wait until the next firmware update came around, as they told me that my problems would be recorded, so that they could address them to the people responsible for updating the firmware for all PS4/Pro systems. And I’ve been waiting for news about the latest update for a couple of months, now, so this issue has been in my mind for quite some time.

    • Ahh, I’m not sure what could be the problem. I have the P series TV, but it should also work with the M series TV after the 3.0 firmware update… PS4 Pro is just a horribly designed system imo. I’m pretty upset with all of these design flaws.

  • Yes! This is brilliant! I o longer have to delete one game so i can play another im going to get a 2Tb will do for me or maybe a bigger one im not sure, the only thing i want from sony now is to be able to delete trophies i have little percent on, please sony Please let us delete trophies and iknow people will say what if you get hacked and your trophies get deleted. Well make an option to restore deleted trophies as welll please!!!

  • Awesome! Can’t wait for this update to release.

  • It’s a good gesture but honestly it’s not all that great. External HDD should’ve been a thing from launch. Backgrounds should’ve been a thing from launch. The notifications didn’t need to be messed with and you ruined a good thing. Very few people stream or care to watch streamers. Very few people have psvr because of the price tag it’s literally as expensive as some pc’s. I’m honestly a little disappointed in you guys. Look how many people are asking to change their 8/9 year old psn id or how many people want their Bluetooth headsets to be compatable but you’d rather change these things. I’m disappointed.

  • When will this update go live?

  • I got the beta and the external HDD support is awesome. …hooked up 2TB right away. It’s about time!

  • okay, this is the update i’ve been waiting for sooooo long, and one that might justified me wanting the PS4 Pro (boost mode!). Just a simple questions about the HDD external support:

will the loading time and performance of games stored in external HDD be affected? I mean compared to the ones on internal HDD.

can i install game (from disc) directly to external HDD?

can the direct to external HDD installation process work on rest mode?

will it work if i put the external HDD (with digital games and PS+ free games) on other PS4 without my PSN account?

btw, thank you for the free God of War III Remastered, such an awesome game!

  • PLAYSTATION LISTENS TO THE FANS! LETS GOOOOOOOOOO! MORE SPACE AND WE CAN POST SCREENSHOTS AND GAME FOOTAGE TO THE ACTIVITY FEED! LETS GOOOOOO!!

  • Is there ANY chance we’ll see a firmware update that allows you to activate your account on more than one console, specifically in the home with more than one PS4? With PS3, you could do that and I’m really hoping that this can happen with the PS4 soon. I can’t tell you how many times our internet has been knocked out and I can’t use my own digitally bought games, unless I go to my brother’s console in his room since that’s the PS4 I have my account activated on. Now I know that it’s a problem when it comes down to game sharing to people who don’t live in the same household, but I thin kit would be best if the PS4 knows that the account was activated on the same network, at least, that’s one way that I can think of that can prevent unintended game sharing

There’s still a thread at the Playstation.Blog.Share website that have people still wanting this feature :(
    https://share.blog.us.playstation.com/ideas/2014/06/05/better-option-for-multiple-ps4s-in-one-household/

  • When this goes live is more important.

  • Let’s hope the system lag is addressed. I know that since I added a 2tb hard drive to it that the system is pretty slow, especially when it comes to showing all the games. I’ve got 70-90 games on my system and it’s getting to be slow finding what I want, even with folders. Perhaps the ability to add folders within folders?

    • Sounds like a HDD issue. I had that problem with PS3. It was fine with the 500GB 5400RPM drive I had, but when 750GB came out I got one that didn’t work well. It was slow until I got my 1TB drive, and then it was back to working great.

  • I recently purchased a PS4 and bunch of games, so I’ve been looking at the memory requirements for each game and trying to make sure I have enough memory.

I only have about 8 games so far, but figure to add more in the coming years.

That said, the ability to add an external hard drive is a great idea.

Is there any particular style or machine that works better than the others? What’s a good brand to get and what size should I be looking at, especially since I’m starting out as a newbie here?

Any recommendations? Looking for something pretty much I can just plug in and go…

  • Hey Sony!

PS4 Pro and PSVR are horribly designed for each other. One of the biggest features of the PS4 Pro is HDMI 2.0+ support, which provided support for HDR, higher color bits, and other 4K functionality. PSVR has a passthrough box that has to be plugged into the PS4 and the TV… You lose ALL of that functionality because it does not support HDMI 2.0+, and on top of that, there’s an issue where picture and sound will cut out periodically (which is only a problem with the Pro)… Only way to fix this is if you unplug the PSVR from the PS4 and TV, and plug the PS4 directly into the TV. I wish they’d focus on fixing that instead of brushing it under the rug.

  • does anyone know when this update goes live/comes out?

    • Anyone who’s tried the beta, I have a question…

What happens when you plug in your external HDD for the first time, do you get given a choice as to whether it will be used for external storage or not?

I will be adding one for extra storage, but I also have another HDD full of all my photos and videos I occasionally use with the media player app. I will still want to be able to connect this occasionally for viewing without the PS4 trying to format it for use as an external storage HDD!

  • I perfer the notification app to stay the way it was before, this new update made it confusing to me. Other then that good update.

    • I agree. As an organization freak, I am freaking out over the mess that this is going to cause. Hopefully they will listen to feedback, and not break what did’t need fixing.

    • @ KBG29 – Sony is especialist in breaking what didn’t need fixing. They making the notification list a mess is no surprise, just another stuff to be mad at from a major update.

  • HDR IN PS4 PRO IS WEAK!!!

HDR In My UHTV : Work with PS4 SLIM But Dont Work With PS4 PRO !!!!!!!

    Tv Is Once !!!
    Hdmi Cable Is Once !!!

I hope Sony fix The big problem In firmware 4.50 .

    NO WAYYY !!!,
    (hdcp= 1.4)===> HDR Option : “Not supported tv !”
(hdcp=2.0)====> HDR Option : “Not Supported tv! “

  • nice, so if i read right i can install games on the usb drive?
after this update i dont need to change the intern hdd?

  • Making games accessible directly from an external hard drive is a step in the right direction, but I’d still rather have the option of not doing full game installs to the hard drive at all and being able to run them directly from the optical drive instead.

  • BIEN YA ERA HORAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • I Would pay $50 for a PSN ID name change…..

I hate my username, but I have so much stuff tired to my account I can’t start over!

    Great new features.

but #1 feature request is NAME CHANGE!

  • All I wanna know is if I’ll stop getting system software errors during gameplay, asking me to update the system when its already updated to the latest version…seriously what’s the point of reporting errors if you guys don’t give a damn?

Also wanna know if videos will stop being cut for 15 seconds in the middle without reason, plus if after quitting the Share menu the videos will stop to start recording only after 15 seconds have passed.THIS NEEDS A FIX ASAP.

Anyway this is rare to happen so I’ll say…this update is pretty good and very useful, the custom wallpaper and post on PSN activity feed are some great additions.Really great.

Now WTF have you guys done with the Notification List?…I’m already saying now bring the old one back,it’ll be a mess now a freakin mess.Oh but we can never have a single major update without you guys doing crap and ruining something that its already great.Still wondering who the hell has these fantastic ideas of making things worse.

  • Even Xbox requires you to log into the gamer tag flagged to the external hdd associated with it to access the games if it isn’t the home console.

My concern is rather a different one.

If ever my box dies, or I decide to upgrade to Scorpio , all I have to do is lateral the drive over, sign in, and play on. I have already done this when shifting from Vanillabone to Sbone.

Sony, when, not if, *WHEN* my ps4 dies, FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME, will I be able to take the external hdd and plug it into my SEVENTH REPLACEMENT ps4, log into my psn account, handshake, and game on?

OR, as is my premonition, are you going to half-arse this by leashing the external hdd to the unique ps4 hardware by which it is first formatted? Forcing me to waste the better part of a couple days downloading massive game files YET AGAIN?

  • This update is going to be awesome. Can anybody confirm if USB hubs work with the PS4? I haven’t tried any yet… would think they’re not too complex and should work. Reason I ask is, PS4 doesn’t have many USB ports, so could be cumbersome trying to fumble between charging controllers and having an external HDD or two plugged in. (I suppose we could always charge our controllers on our PCs and laptops and stuff, but that’s not always fully convenient for everybody.)

  • i need this too really really need some space for my games :D

  • Dang, tested 3.5 and 4.0 I was hoping I’d get to try out 4.5 too for the external HDD support on the Pro.

  • I would really like for Sony to update their OS to handle the Logitech controllers that use Bluetooth and add more options to use Bluetooth like Bluetooth ear buds as well

  • Okay I know a lot of people comment but I hope mine will be heard. I REALLY think that games that have been purchased on ps3 that are available on ps4 store should be free. Example I have bought gta 3 gta vice city gta San Andreas and quite a few other titles on the ps3, and they are available on the ps4 store I should have that content available without buying it twice it’s not like the content has been remastered it looks identical. There’s no way I’m buying all that content again. I added up all the money I spent on ps3 over the years and it was $760 excluding consoles which I bought 3 of out of the box. Controllers headsets etc. And that’s just one user on the network. You guys are a success because of us don’t get me wrong I love Sony but I did feel like that’s a slap in the face I sold my ps3 to buy my ps4 and don’t have access to a single game I bought, all those games COULD be redone to be on the ps4 store hints skyrim all the bioshocks all the gtas. The resources and money are there.

  • Sorry if it’s been asked before but not got time to sift through pages, but has there been an official date for full release of 4.5,
Just separate to try the PSVR movies.

    Thanks for any answers.

  • Looking forward to external hard drive.

  • I would like to see a private chat with the camera.Even if it is just skype.

  • I used a seagate slim +.The one I used the hard drive out of to upgrade my ps4 hard drive.I wanted to see how hard it would be to use external hard drive.I could not believe how easy it was. They made it easy to format. So lets hope there are no problem in the future.

  • u can run games with a usb port ? what type of hdd should i use for that ?

    • I looked online to see what was compatible.I purchased a seagate slim 2tb.I took it apart installed it in my ps4.I put the 500gb in the case. That is what i used for external hard drive.

  • Remote Play dont work. (For PC)
