PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Starting today, those of you selected for our beta program will get an early peek at some of the new features coming to PS4 with our next major system software update, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke). If you signed up for the beta and were chosen, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Even if you’re not participating in the beta, we still wanted to give you a quick glance of the key features that will be rolling out with this update. We’re refining the user interface of PS4 even further, and adding highly requested features like external HDD support and custom wallpapers.

External HDD Support

It’s easy to upgrade the HDD that came with your PS4, but if you’re still looking for more storage space on the console, we’ve got you covered. With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilà, you now have more space on the console.

PS4 System Software Update 4.50 external HDD support

This is compatible with HDDs up to 8TB in size. You can download and install applications directly to your extra storage, and the saved contents are easily manageable through the settings menu.

Also, all the applications saved in the external HDD will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen so it’s easy to keep track of what apps you launched recently.

Please note: user save files are still stored locally on your PS4 HDD. Only games and applications are stored externally.

Custom Wallpapers

This update adds the ability to set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4’s home screen. Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.

You can also edit screenshots using Photo Mode in Sharefactory to make your one-and-only custom wallpaper.

Quick Menu Refresh

As you may know, in the last system update we overhauled the PS4 Quick Menu feature (the menu that appears after a long press of the PS button on DualShock 4).

This update brings additional improvements to make it even more accessible. Now the Quick Menu will cover even less of your gameplay screen, and you’ll be able to access handy Party features via Online Friends, like creating new parties, inviting friends, and joining parties, without transitioning to the separate Party app. The goal is to keep you in the game — and not stuck in menus.

Simplified Notification List

Before this update, the Notifications app had a variety of tabs on the left-hand side, like Game Alerts, Downloads, Uploads, and more. We’ve condensed all of the tabs to a single simplified list, making it easier to see all of your notifications all at-a-glance.

You can also quickly access the Notification settings from the Options Menu to turn off or customize which pop-up notifications appear on your screen, so you’re only being notified about your top priorities.

Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

We’re adding the ability to post directly into the Activity Feed, which appears in a variety of places across the console, including What’s New. Under What’s New, you’ll see a new option to post things like text, screenshots, and gifs directly into your Activity Feed. You can also tag games or other users to make sure they don’t miss your post. It’s a great way to show off your greatest triumphs.

Tying into this new feature, Live from PlayStation will show screenshots that users uploaded to PSN as a Public Activity, so you can show off your best gameplay moments not only to your friends, but to users around the globe.

3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR

If you’re a fan of 3D movies, and you own PlayStation VR, we’ve got good news — this update adds the ability to view 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR headset. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!

There are more features included in 4.50, so make sure to keep an eye out for additional info, including launch timing, in the weeks to come.

  • Is the update for 3D on psvr will work in cinematic mode for 3D games of the ps3 or is it only for 3D movies?

  • I mean do you plan to release a ps3 system update to make it see the psvr as a 3D display in cinematic mode for the games that support 3D ?

  • when I heard this I got the ps4 slim this is why I delayed so long, I may be a xbot but I love my sony exclusives, this is the Firmware you needed from day 1 thanks for everything to the Team at Sony congrats

  • I had heard of two rumored updates for the ps4 that I was looking forward to using a while back. One of which was the external HDD support. The other one was the ability to use any Bluetooth headset with the ps4. I’m happy to see that one of these is becoming available soon, but would also like to be able to use my Bluetooth headset on the ps4 without having to wire it through the handy headphone jack on my controller.

  • When does it release?

Done buying anything for my PS4 until I can use this Hard Drive I bought when this article came out.

  • Hands down, Sony you convinced in terms of PS4 Pro upgrade… Buying one tomorrow morning..

  • Only thing that I don’t like about this update is the “Simplified Notification List”. It’s way better to have everything sorted, kinda like a folder containing more folders.

  • Does anyone know when it release to everyone?

    • I asked the same question and didnt get a reply.

I think it will be this week as they have there show tomorrow i think

  • Great to see such an update. Can;t wait for it to be available to everyone. ;)

    Cheers

  • I wonder if we can copy apps to the ps4 from the external hard drive as well. That would be so dope if we could

  • Can we expect this update to be released before Andromeda? Right now, I have it preordered for PS4 but will definitely switch to the X1 (4TB external hdd) if this isn’t likely. If I wanted to play around inside an expensive machine, I’d learn how to build a good PC.

  • do we have a release date yet?

my internal hdd is full and i want to install some old very large games to external usb hdd. i cant even buy any new games without deleting stuff and i dont want to do that.

  • Hello I have a question when will the ps4 software update coming out??

  • This is my guess march 7th

  • I read the final gets released usually 1 week after the last beta. As beta 4 was supposed to be the last beta and that was 8 days ago the final should be released any day now.

And they said it would be released in Feb but as usual $ony can’t be trusted in things like that. They will say 1 thing and do another. (Remember “we will never remove OtherOS” then 2 months later it gets removed)

  • When is the update going to come out

  • Does anyone know when this update will be released to everyone??? My PS4 is almost full!!!! I have an external I can add ASAP!!!

    • Same here, I blame Call of Duty for that. I have Black OP’s 3, MW re-mastered and Infinite and the season passes and that takes up most of the PS4. more then any of my other games and I have. Also I have GTA5 but haven’t played it yet because not enough space to install it on PS4. So this update needs to come out ASAP!! or at least send us the Bata file that we can install by flash drive. Honestly we are not asking for all the updates Sony just release the update to use external HD’s. I am getting a feeling Sony might release the 4.50 update this Tuesday March 7.Seeing how some new games are coming out and some new add on updates for games like Hatsune Miku are coming out as well. I remember most of the time they release ups for that game there is always a system update.

  • Come on Sony, been over a month now, and I have not read of anyone experiencing problems. Release this thing already, is getting old. Even though PS is far and away my preferred console (I have a Pro and still have my launch system), I have still been buying cross platform games on my Xbox One indtead (and that is a whole lot of games teust me) for the sake of not having to delete something to jnstall something (and I have a 2TB SSD installed in my Pro). Add to the the desire to see more benefits from my purchasing a Pro, and you can see why one might be anxious to get this update.

  • Will 4.50 fix the issue with my 75JU6500 Samsung to allow 4K content, my set is HDCP 2.2 enabled. But I can’t play Tomb Raider in 4K nor watch Netflix.

  • Please can you let us know if this update will fix the image drift problem on the psvr that I am getting with my PS4 and my PS4 pro? It is making my feel like I have wasted money on Sony hardware and it is really starting to upset me whenever it happens, on a daily basis. Thankyou, I hope you read this and can give me a solution to my and many others problem.

  • I am exited to see that one of the two features (besides being years behind) that I always thought the PS4 was missing was finally coming. I am excited that finally we get an external hard drives for game storage. The lack of storage is the only thing that has kept me from utilizing the PSN store. I have always choose the Disk route for my games so that if I wanted to play a game with friends that I didn’t keep on my system I didn’t have to wait for a 30 minutes to 2 hours to play it again. My only questions are simple… Can I use more than one hard drive with a USB hub? or can I swap hard drives and access games on a second drive? Maybe now I will get a PSvr or Pro.
Well, now that I have praised the update, I still am waiting for one feature. Why is it that the Vita can use my standard LG Bluetooth headset for my party conversations but I can’t use my headset on PS4 to chat, listen to a game, watch a movie or TV show? Come on Sony…. I am tired of using standard earbuds plugged into my controller that constantly shuts off unless I am tethered to a charger. All I should say Sony is; Betamax, Memory Sticks, Mini Disks. When do you learn that proprietary hardware gets you left behind in the market.

  • Release this already!!!! Ridiculous!

  • Where is this mystical update? There is alot of people waiting to play these new games!

    • Looking back at betas for 3.00, 3.50 and 4.00, it has always been a full calendar month between beta and official release, and 4.5 was on 3rd Feb so it’s a calendar month today.

The announcements for the offiical releases were on Mondays and the FW came out Tue/Wed.

They are not going to release on a Friday in case it causes problems and have to work over the weekend, so I am making an educated guess we will get the announcement at the start of the week, and the FW on Wednesday. (Tue is PS+ release day).

  • @reebokrebel – Nice detective work, and I believe you may very well be correct. One of the biggest questions I have in all of this process is why the controlled size of the test group. It has been my experience, as well as the practice of companies like Microsoft, that you want the beta test done by as many people as possible, you should never try to keep your test group to a minimum. There are so many benefits to this, one of which is to keep your customer base happy. If people are willing to risk installing beta software on their system then by all means let them. The more people testing it results in a much more sure product being released to the masses.

  • Cannot wait for this update to be released publicly…Soo Sony….When can we expect the update to be made available for download?!?

  • This is getting ridiculous! Welp, another weekend and I am not buying anything on Playstation with the money I have here. I’ve done this weeks in a row now. I need more memory and external HDD support. Until then, won’t be renewing my ps+ or buying any games at all.

  • Pretty bad you have to be forced to install your physical copy games. SMH

  • I want the option to remove crap from the XMB. I never use Communities or Events and most themes dont have icons for them either so they look stupid and just a waste of space and I hate getting notifications for them all the damn time.

  • I am going to look forward to this one

  • Another thing, as I own both consoles, ps4 and xbox one s and my ps4 is full and cant use an external hdd yet and the xbox one s can, I cant buy any games for PS4 as I have no room to install them. Looks like I’ll be getting the xbox one s version of Ghost Recon Wildlands unless this update comes out before that game does.
I will be wanting to play it on day one so if this update isn’t out I will be forced to get the xbox one s version… Well, at least I get to play it in 4K on that version as I don’t have a PS4 pro as the xbox one s was a hell of a lot cheaper. ($300 cheaper here)
The money I saved lets me get lots of games for it too.

Just hurry up and give us the damn update. We don’t like waiting…. I did try to join the beta but they are too stupid and put limits on it and didn’t let me join. They should’ve let everyone join the beta, the more the better.
Maybe limit beta 1 but by beta 4 most bugs should’ve been removed and it should be stable enough by then, they should’ve opened it up for anyone then you wouldn’t have all these posts here asking for it, as everyone would’ve just got the open beta and we would all be happy now.

  • yessssss! Finally!!!!

  • I’d like to know when it will b available for everyone

  • Sony, How do I get the software update, version 4.50 for my PS4 Slim. It’s been out for over a month now so It should be open to everyone to use. I ask because I just went out and got a 5TB external Heard drive for my PS4 since I have no more space for my games on my PS4 and COD Updates are huge. That’s why I need this update soon, I would hate to have to delete games, I already have new games I can’t even play because of space like GTA5. So please send me this update. The only other thing you might want to consider doing is making the game files and updates more compressed files like zip files.

  • Where is the update. Tired of waiting lets get a move on with it. Jesus Beta Phase 4 in progress, when the last beta for 4.0 ended at Beta phase 3. Come om it’s already been a month an we’re almost a week into March, hurry up.
