PS4 System Software Update 4.00 Out Tomorrow

The next major system software update for PS4, version 4.00 (codenamed Shingen), will be available tomorrow. This update brings a refreshed system UI, Folder organization, updates to the Quick Menu and Share Menu, Library improvements, and much more!

We detailed a number of the new features making their way to PS4 prior to the beta program last month, but we wanted to share some additional information on other changes that you’ll see after updating your system.

Quick Menu — Music

In addition to updating the Quick Menu to make it easier to access without leaving your game by having it cover only a portion of the screen and making it more customizable, we’ve also added several new items to the menu. One new addition to the Quick Menu that wasn’t featured in the beta program is an enhanced Music section to allow you to discover, play, and control Spotify without needing to open the app.

From the Music section of the Quick Menu you’ll now be able to play, pause, skip, shuffle, repeat and save songs. The Music section also allows you to discover recommended playlists for the game you’re playing and view your saved Spotify playlists and songs. When you select a playlist, you’ll be able to see all upcoming songs and choose to play all, or select an individual song to listen to from that playlist.

The PlayStation Music team and Spotify have been working with your favorite game creators to create playlists to enhance your gameplay. Follow PlayStation Music on Spotify to get the latest gaming playlists first.

PlayStation 4 Pro Updates

In anticipation of the release of PS4 Pro on November 10, 2016, we’re adding a number of features that will support the system’s ability to output high-resolution content. This update will enable the following on PS4 Pro:

  • 1080p streaming for Remote Play on PC/Mac and compatible Xperia devices
  • 1080p streaming for Share Play
  • 1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on YouTube
  • 1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

When we announced PS4 Pro and the new slimmer PS4 last week, we also announced that all PlayStation 4 systems — back to the very first console sold in 2013 — would be HDR capable. After updating your system to version 4.00, you’ll see HDR settings in the Video Output Settings and be ready to enjoy HDR gaming and entertainment content once it’s available on any PS4 system you own. Of course, you’ll need an HDR compatible display as well.

What’s New

What’s New has been redesigned and now includes more information about what your friends have been doing on PS4.

The left column includes the new Activity Feed, which has larger images and easily accessible options to like, comment, or reshare. The right column includes sections for Now Playing, Trending, Players You May Know, and Who to Follow.

Content Info Screen

We’ve given a similar redesign to the content info screen, which you can access by pressing down on a game tile while on the home screen. You’ll be able to easily select from a variety of options to view a game’s Overview, Trending media, Friends and Communities, Activities, and related PlayStation Store content.

Data Transfer to New PS4

In order to make it easier to get all of your data from one PS4 to another, especially if you upgrade to PS4 Pro, we’ve added the ability to transfer data over a wired LAN connection. You can transfer games, user info, and saved data. Of course, you can re-download content and transfer saves through the cloud, but the LAN transfer should be much faster and easier.

Those are just some of the more prominent additions making their way to PS4 in this update, but there are a number of other refinements to the system software overall. Please enjoy!

    You know when the last presidents from SCE A Hirai and the other guy from america showed the Monitor 3d for Playstation it was cool like it was a monitor or product from A p p le, altough it was an small display like 25 inches and now a normal Tv for living rooms are 50 inches to above

    I was a 4.0 beta tester and just finished updating my PS4 to 4.0. Now I come to a very annoying problem… I can’t view the game bottom section from home menu (when you scroll to a game @ home menu and the bottom has start, overview, trending, etc.). What do I do to fix this, I already restarted it a few times and still not working…

      I just noticed this myself too. I can no longer view a games bottom information, rate, buy, etc. None of the bottom info shows for anything now. Games, Apps etc. I can’t push down to get to it and nothing even displays to show anything is there.

      Did you happen to create any folders? It seems as soon as I put all my purchased games into a folder that is when displaying the bottom info for everything broke. It isn’t just for games in my folders either, it is everything on the main bar I haven’t touched too.

      Something else I noticed is the the Key Tone navigation sound is now muffled too like it is playing very very low and I can barely hear it. I know there is an issue because the Media Player uses the same sound but since the Media Player has it’s own built in sounds you can tell the difference from it not sounding right in 4.00 Firmware.

    Am I missing something?

    * Content Info screen – The blog entry says if you press down on a game tile, the content info screen with social media info, trophies, related livestream videos will pop up. I get no screen.

    * Folders – I created a new folder for all of my gaming apps but can you not move apps like Netflix and Hulu into their own folder??

      Yes this is happening to many so it is definitely an issue atm. Folders for apps like Netflix and Hulu are basically somewhat already in a folder since they are all contained within the TV & Video icon which basically is a folder.

      I do agree though that you should be able to put any app you choose into a new folder so you don’t have to scroll through all the default icons they have stuffed in the TV & Video section.

    At this time we are able to share our videos to facebook, twitter, etc,.. Please add the function for us to be able to post the video to our ps4’s whats new screen. I dont want to invite my ps4 friends to facebook i just want to be able to share a video clip of a cool ps4 moment to my ps4 friends.

      I’m relieved to hear I’m not the only one, this is beyond frustrating. I contacted support and they prematurely ended the chat before assisting me with a proper solution. I’ve almost never had a good experience with chat support, and now my ps4 is pretty much unusable until I can call them tomorrow. I doubt they can fix it. I recommend anyone having this problem sheck there system memory, all the memory my games were taking up (about 440 GB ) is missing leaving me with 60 GB of free space. What happened to the rest?

    same for the Content Info, it was working early when I was looking around after updating, I seen some say it wasnt working for them re-tested and its not working for me, it might be a network issue,tehre is maintenance tonight

      I updated my PS4 without incident around 3pm EST. The only issue I have is with the lack of the content list menus. I can only access them from what’s new after I have played a game. I press X on the recently played box and from there a game page opens and content list is on the right hand side. I hope this is just a server issue. I really don’t want to have to restore the whole system over this but I will if I have to. If something isn’t working on any OS no matter how minor I just have to fix it. Stuff like this drives me crazy!!! Other than that 4.0 is nice and smooth on my 2TB drive.

    The update no longer allows keyboard functionality in several apps yet pause/break still acts as the PS button. This probably wont affect most people but I use my PS4 controllers for my PC while my family watches netflix on the ps4 and we found out today that it no longer works.

      Scratch that it works we had to reset the whole system and reconnect the controllers and keyboard first before the ps4 registered the keyboard as an input device, it might just be a problem with wireless keyboards driver software loading from the usb reciever

      Not yet. It’s definitely on their end. I didn’t have any of the betas installed. I updated from the previous official FW through the PS4 and this is the only issue I have. Everything else is very smooth. I have a Seagate/Samsung 2TB drive from an external backup plus slim in my machine but I don’t think this has anything to do with aftermarket drives.

    Yes easier Data Transfer!!!! You cannot believe how much data I have, over 1.5tb worth of downloaded contents and it would be a disaster redownloading everything over to a newer hard drive!!! Thanks a bunch!!! :)

    Please give us an option to choose either the old black notifications or the new white ones. Because for me personally the white ones are absolutely obnoxious and hideous.

      I agree, I liked the black notifications better. I’m sure all the white changes they added were to reflect all the white visual design the upcoming PSVR is using so they want everything to be cohesive.

    I agree with Arkhaine, I cannot stand the new black letters on white background notifications. They are hideous and not easy on the eyes. From where I sit half the time I have to squint or get closer to the screen to read. Why would you not allow us to choose to keep them black. This stuff is common sense, don’t limit…give options.

    I’m also having the same problem with the Content Info Screen as others. Was working for like an hour after I updated… Now when I press down on a title…. Nothing.

      I just fixed the content info problem. Turn off the PS4. Hold the power button on the machine until you hear two beeps. Connect the controller with the cable. Press the PS button on controller and select rebuild database. It only takes a few minutes and it fixed the issue right away. My HDD even feels faster now. It is similar to a defrag.

    Akk these updates are good and everything but theyre still not giving me the feature i wanted since day 1 the ability to add custom music into the system using usb or ipod mp3 etc like the ps3 i know the show added this year and i dont know if any other game allows it but i was hoping this new ps4 pro had that feature.

    1. Incredibly disappointed and frustrated by this update. After waiting hours for the Game Page to finally appear when pressing Down, it looks like the “My Add-ons” section (which used to be at the very bottom) is completely removed. There is now no way to access a list of an owned game’s DLC to see what you have installed and do not.

    This was important to me because sometimes I do not install DLC immediately and wish to wait until a later date, or I choose not install the DLC all together. An example is Rock Band 4. I have purchased over 1,500 DLC for Rockband since 2007. Some songs I have come to realize I do not like and have chosen not to download them into my game going forward. After this update, I no longer have access to a list of all my purchased DLC to see which songs I have installed and do not.

In fact, whereas some games would have a link to the Playstation Store listed, they all seem to work differently… Rock Band 4 has no link to the store for the DLC what-so-ever, which means to find the DLC, you have to go to the main Playstation Store icon, do a search for Rock Band 4, choose to go to the Store Page, then the Add-Ons page, and then scrolling through over two thousand pieces of DLC to find what you are looking for. Whereas Batman: Arkham Knight has a link to the store in it’s game tab, but only shows you DLC that you have not purchased (and completely hides the DLC that you do have.) While even still, Dying Light, will show you all the DLC available, both the pieces you’ve already purchased and the pieces you still can.

      it was just so much simpler when we had a nice easy list at the bottom of the Game Page that shows all the pieces of DLC you owned, told you if it was installed, and gave you a little download button to install it. :(

    All my downloaded games are no longer showing up, as well as my apps and the PlayStation store. The above info menu is still accessible mostly, messages errors out when I try to open them.     IT’S Really TOOOO Buggy!!
    My ps4 can’t shut down normally! it syas “Preparing PS4 for shutting down” for 15 minutes!!!
    i have to manually unplug it’s cord, in order to turn it off…
    i have deleted most of my applications(Games) i thought that its a storage problem, but it wasn’t..
    EVEN I CAN’T SIGN IN TO PS NETWORK :(
    I cant play multiplayer!!

      I’m having some of those same issues. Mine is mostly with online gaming. I can’t connect to any games online servers. When I try and watch other users Live streams on my ps4, it won’t load there videos. It’s like 4.0 messed up my internet connection.

    Great update but I still want the ability to add the picture of a stunning glamour model as my wallpaper….I know in this day and age of copyrights and law suits you have to be careful but is it too much to ask to be able to save an image from the internet like you still can on the PS3!

    My Ps4 is only few months old been playing diablo every night without any problems.

    But after updating the patch last night to 4.0

    Diablo crashed for first ever time screen frozen did not respond in the game but could press the ps button to quit the game.

    I waited for 20 minutes to see if it would start moving again.

    Very frustrating had done all the bounties in each act and had only one bounty to go what a waste of time.

    When came back into the game all was reset very frustrating.

    Hope Sony Can Look into this.

    The new look is really good. Covers need work. But one thing i found is that downloading a game with 2 parts (game and app data) is split into one line instead of Seperate downloads. So it shows, the first download and the second App Data after it on one bar and makes it alot easier to read with 2 different readings at the same time. Just download a PS PLUS like NBA 2K16 and have a look

    We updated to 4.0 last night and now we just have a black screen. Did the PS4 bite the dust or is there something we need to change on the tv settings? I have seen something about HDCP? We have a sumsung JU6500 4k series tv. Any suggestions appreciated

    Why has the ability to rate games been removed? It was a very helpful feature, and the only reason I can think of for removing it is that it might discourage people from purchasing poorly rated games… which makes this seem like a move that is not in the customers’ best interest, but purely aimed at increasing sales of sub-par products, to the detriment of your customers.

    Also, I dislike many of the changes… from the way game info (including DLC) has been removed/altered, to the new look of the trophies. The old trophy pop-up was far superior; please change it back. I’d much rather have the name of the trophy be displayed more prominently; it makes no sense to have every trophy read “Trophy Earned” with the name of the trophy written in a smaller font below it.

    As for the Library information, again, please change it back to the way it was as well. The new layout and info design is less functional and less user-friendly.

    I am extremely happy with the 4.0 update, but have one minor concern though. The Media Player still looks old school. Any possibility of an upcoming update on Media Player, which will make its UI blend in with PS Update 4.0’s UI.

    For the love of accessibility bring back the old capture gallery,or at least give us the option to see our screenshots and videos in grade or list.Now you can’t see the date and time of when the screenshots and videos were recorded without going into “information”.

    Also videos don’t move anymore on the Share menu making impossible to see where the video started,now you need to go to capture gallery to see if the video recorded properly.

    You guys at Sony are completely out of common sense…you are making things difficult instead of making them better,I mean who was the genius who thought it would be better to not see the date and time of our record content?…having to go on “information” on each video is a tremendous inconvenience.Same goes for video not moving on the Share menu.

    Is there a way to change the view on the Capture Gallery back to what it was previously? The previous view gave the capture file name which was helpful because it included the date and time stamp.

    I have no idea which files I’m looking at or what date they were created because all I see is a thumbnail. This makes it very hard to know when these files were created.

    Is anyone having issues with connection to game servers? Since updating to 4.0 I can’t get into any game servers online. My ports are all correctly forwarded. I’ve tried all the troubleshooting psn suggests doing. I’ve rebuilt my database. Nothing is working. I know it’s not my internet. My games were working fine before this update. Am I just one of the rare unlucky ones?:'( I’ve got one more solution. I’m going to try to download the update into USB and go into safe mode to reinstall it. Hope it helps.

    The #1 thing I wanted with the quick menu is way to turn off the controller. Instead they put it at the bottom of the sound/devices menu. To make thing worse they allow you to change the order of every section inside the quick menu, except for sound/devices. I liked it better on the PS3 where you just pressed PS button and the option was right there.

    I have to say this update was a disappointment for TV & Video Apps.

    – The TV & Video folder cannot be sorted.
    – TV & Video apps cannot be added to a folder.

    I guess it would be too much to ask having downloaded apps in order first and all your advertisement and non-downloaded apps after. So much for convenience to the consumer.

    When i try to update it says a DNS server cannot be used. i checked everything and found out i cant connect to PSN for no apparent reason, does anyone know how to fix this??

    After the upgrade to 4.00 , I am unable to edit my custom superstars in WWE 2K16, I have tried everything from removing text, because I read in earlier versions of the game’s firmware, that was problematic, but that did not help, I remove the text, try to save, it crashes, I tried recreating my caw from the ground up, that was successful, until I tried to make a secondary attire, then it crashes, the last thing I can think of to do is back all my data up on a usb flash drive so I can retain my game data because I’m down to the last resort before I think of sending it in to Sony for repairs , which is uninstalling and reinstalling the game. This update has so many bugs that it has crashed mid match on me. WWE 2K16 is my go to game and now because of this buggy firmware update, it’s hardly playable. Before you worry about name changes on PSN, you really need to address this issue, because it’s a serious hassle for people who don’t really know what they’re doing outside of gaming on the PS4. The average person more than likely wouldn’t think of that, so please, for the average Joes and Jills out there, please release an update to fix these bugs that have been very cumbersome to the PlayStation community.
