PS4 Pro: The Ultimate FAQ

PlayStation is introducing a new choice for console gamers with PS4 Pro, a powerful addition to the PS4 family. It’s designed to offer heightened gaming experiences, whether via your existing HDTV or a new 4K TV.

With its increased performance over the standard PS4, PS4 Pro represents a first for PlayStation — and in many ways, for console gaming. We’re excited by this vision, but we know many of you will have questions. That’s why we’ve built our latest Ultimate FAQ below.

This FAQ will serve as a living document, and we’ll continue to add new questions, details, and specifics leading up to launch on November 10 in North America. If you have questions that aren’t addressed, leave them in the comments below and we’ll add ‘em to the list.

In the meantime: it’s time to get to know PS4 Pro!

New questions added Nov. 3, 2017

Q: What type of buttons are on the front of PS4 Pro?
The buttons are mechanical.

Q: Is there anything else I should know if I own both PS VR and PS4 Pro, and a 4K TV?
If you’re playing a normal, non-VR game on your PS4 Pro, PS VR’s Processor Unit will output a 4K signal to a 4K TV — but in the YUV420 format only. The Processor Unit does not support HDR pass-through, so you will need to plug your PS4 Pro directly into your TV (bypassing the Processor Unit) to view HDR content.

Q: Can I use my PS4 Pro as a “second” primary account?
No, you can only choose one PS4 device to be your primary account.

Q: Can I install a new hard drive in my PS4 Pro?
Yes. As with both models of the standard PS4, you can replace PS4 Pro’s stock 1TB, 5400RPM hard drive relatively quickly and easily using just a Phillips head screwdriver. You will need to select a 2.5’’ (laptop PC sized) hard drive that is no more than 9.5mm thick.

Q: Are there any other changes to PS4 Pro’s hard drive interface?
Yes, PS4 Pro supports the faster SATA-III specification.

Q: Do 4K TVs suffer from increased input lag?
Not necessarily, but the phenomenon known as “input latency” or “input lag” may be an important consideration if you are considering buying a new TV to be used with gaming. The amount of latency differs by TV.

Many TVs feature a “Game Mode” or the like in order to reduce this latency as much as possible, but this performance can vary (e.g. by deactivating special features like HDR). If possible, try to test out a new TV before buying it, connecting your PS4 or PS4 Pro to get a sense of its overall gaming performance. In-depth professional reviews or user reviews can also be valuable.

Q: Can I use an external HDD with PS4 Pro?
As with the standard PS4, PS4 Pro does not support external HDDs for storing game files, but you can use it for storing a system backup, media storage, or save files.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support rendering in full, native 4K?
Yes. While PS4 Pro supports outputting a native 4K signal, many developers are leveraging powerful rendering technologies including a process called “checkerboard rendering” to best balance the heightened clarity of a native 4K signal with other rich graphical features and a smooth performance profile.

PS4 Pro: Basic Questions

Q: What is PS4 Pro?
PS4 Pro is a high-end version of PS4 that is capable of outputting 4K graphics, HDR support, smoother and more stable framerates, and 4K video streaming. Upon its launch, PS4 Pro will make supported PS4 games look better and run more smoothly, while giving developers an upgraded toolset to create even richer, more detailed game worlds. How these powerful new tools are used is up to individual developers and the experience they are creating. You may have seen some of these examples during PlayStation Meeting 2016.

It’s important to note that PS4 Pro is not another generation of console. It won’t make your current PS4 games obsolete, and it won’t split the PS4 player base. PS4 Pro is very much a part of the PS4 family.

Q: When will PS4 Pro be available, where, and for how much?
PS4 Pro will launch in the US and Canada on November 10 for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD).

Q: Will PS4 Pro have separate or exclusive games?
There will not be any PS4 Pro-exclusive games. Because PS4 Pro and the standard PS4 are members of the same family, both systems will be fully compatible with all past, present, and future PS4 titles, including PlayStation VR. All PS4 games are PS4 Pro games, and vice-versa.

Following PS4 Pro’s launch on November 10 in North America, virtually all new PS4 game releases moving forward will be able to take advantage of PS4 Pro capabilities on day one, or in some cases shortly after launch via a downloadable update. Some titles previously released will be updated to take advantage of PS4 Pro features, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son First Light, Shadow of Mordor, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and more.

Q: Will all PS4 games be compatible with PS4 Pro?
Yes, all existing PS4 games are fully compatible with PS4 Pro. Developers are able to add PS4 Pro enhancements to previously released PS4 games via a downloadable update if they choose to.

Q: Will I need to pay to update my existing PS4 game with new PS4 Pro features?

A: While nothing specifically prevents publishers and developers from this, we don’t anticipate it at this time. Software updates enabling PS4 Pro features on any existing first-party title (such as inFamous First Light or Uncharted 4) will be free.

Q: Will SIE continue to sell and support the standard PS4?
Yes. PS4 Pro is an evolution of the PS4 generation platform, which will continue to include the standard PS4 system. PS4 Pro was designed for gamers who want to be at the forefront of gaming innovation. Whether you decide to purchase the new system or continue playing on the standard PS4 system, you’ll enjoy the same games that make PlayStation the best place to play.

Q: Will PS4 Pro require a 4K TV?
No. PS4 Pro can display much higher resolutions than the standard PS4 when using a 4K TV. But if you own an HDTV (720p, 1080i, 1080p), PS4 Pro can still improve your gaming experience.

Q: What benefits does PS4 Pro provide when played on a non-4K HDTV?
PS4 Pro offers benefits even if you play on a HDTV that isn’t 4K. Depending on how the developer chooses to use the increased processing power, games with PS4 Pro support are able to render higher or more consistent framerates, increased environmental and character model detail, improved overall visual quality, and other related visual enhancements. For a look at how games are using the power of PS4 Pro, watch some of the first game footage on our YouTube page.

Additionally, PS4 games that render below native 1080p (maximum quality for HD TVs) on the standard PS4 can be elevated to render at full native 1080p on an HDTV.

See below for a chart detailing how PS4 Pro will display based on different TV types.

4K content 2K or less than 1080p content
2K TV Optimized to 1080p If less than 1080p,
upscale to 1080p
4K TV If 4K (2160p), display as is Upscale to 4K (2160p)
4K/HDR TV If 4K (2160p), display as is
If content is HDR supported, display in HDR
Upscale to 4K (2160p)
If content is HDR supported, display in HDR

Q: What resolutions does PS4 Pro support?
On 4K TVs, games are capable of running at up to 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels, also known as “2160p”) resolution. On HDTVs, games will run at 1080p.

Q: Will PS4 Pro be compatible with my existing PS4 downloaded games, saved data, and PlayStation Network Friend lists?
Yes. PS4 Pro exists in the same digital ecosystem as the standard PS4 in all regards; two PS4 console systems, one PlayStation Network, one PS4 community. This means you can start playing a game on your PS4 Pro, upload the saved data to online storage using PS Plus (sold separately), and pick up your progress on a standard PS4 in another room. It also means that all content and saved data that you already own on PS4 are fully compatible with PS4 Pro on day one.

Q: What if I already own a standard PS4? Is there an easy way to transfer my games, saved data, and Share captured content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro?
Yes. You will be able to copy your games, saved data, captured videos and screenshots, system settings, and other content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro using a standard Ethernet cable. This process will also work from standard PS4 to standard PS4, PS4 Pro to standard PS4, and PS4 Pro to PS4 Pro provided that both units have system software update 4.00 or higher installed, and the same PSN account is signed into both systems.

Alternatively, you can log-into PSN with your PS4 Pro, access your games and content library, and re-download your previously purchased games and content. Of course, your saved data in online storage will transfer as well.

Q: Will the PS4 Pro system introduce any improvements to DUALSHOCK 4?
The latest version of DUALSHOCK 4 will be included with PS4 Pro, as well as the new slimmer standard PS4. But it does not introduce any significant new functionality. The new DUALSHOCK 4 allows the light from the light bar to emit on the touch pad, making a new luminous line that illuminates in the same color as that of the light bar. It also supports USB communication in addition to Bluetooth communication. Existing DUALSHOCK 4 controllers going back to the launch of PS4 are fully supported on PS4 Pro; the updated DUALSHOCK 4 will, in turn, be fully supported by every PS4 model.

PS4 Pro: Technical Specifications

Q: How does PS4 Pro compare to the standard PS4?
PS4 Pro is significantly more powerful than the standard PS4 model. PS4 Pro’s advanced graphics processor unit incorporates many features from AMD’s latest “Polaris” architecture, as well as some fully custom hardware innovations, and is considerably more powerful than the GPU included in the standard PS4.

All in all, this increase in processing power enables developers to tap into far more demanding visual features for PS4 Pro owners, including smoother or more stable framerates, support for 4K rendering, advanced graphics features, and more.

Q: What video output settings does PS4 Pro support?
At launch, PS4 Pro supports all of the HD video output settings found on the standard PS4. Notably, PS4 Pro introduces 4K output, with settings for both 2160p YUV420 and 2160p RGB (recommended if your TV supports it) at up to 60 frames per second when using a supported 4K TV and Premium High Speed HDMI Cable.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support High Dynamic Range (HDR)?
Yes, PS4 Pro is fully compatible with the HDR10 specification at launch. HDR10 is a widely supported HDR format embraced by major entertainment companies.

Q: What is HDR?
High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is an emerging display standard that allows for massively increased color depth and greater contrast compared to Standard Dynamic Range, the decades-old specification currently employed by traditional HDTVs. In general, HDR-enabled content played on an HDR-compatible TV produces a noticeably fuller, richer image, that’s closer to what the eye naturally sees. That means much deeper black levels that retain finer details; brighter, more dazzling highlights; and a much wider color spectrum than is possible on older HDTV technology.

It’s actually impossible to demonstrate the true benefits of HDR technology here because you need an HDR-enabled screen and content to experience it. You can, however, watch this video from Sony that shows some simulated before-and-after scenes.

Q: Will PS4 Pro include support for Dolby Vision HDR?
There are currently no plans to support Dolby Vision.

Q: Does PS4 Pro require any specialized equipment?
Only if you want to experience 4K and HDR. Otherwise, no. Like the standard PS4, PS4 Pro fully supports existing HD TVs (720p / 1080i / 1080p). PS4 Pro can also output a 4K signal on supported 4K TVs when using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable (one will be included with PS4 Pro). To enjoy HDR features, you’ll need an HDTV that’s compatible with the HDR10 format, and HDR10-enabled games or content.

Q: Outside of higher gaming performance, 4K TV features, and support for 4K video streaming, are there any other benefits to PS4 Pro?
Yes. PS4 Pro will come standard with a 1TB HDD, faster Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), and a third USB 3.1 Gen.1 port on the rear of the unit. PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can also benefit PlayStation VR games, enhance streaming features such as Share Play and Remote Play, and enable higher resolution output for media captured using the Share button.

In most other ways, PS4 Pro will be very similar to the standard PS4. This includes the user interface and functionality.

Q: Why do I need a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable for using PS4 Pro on my 4K TV?
For maximum quality, you’ll need a PS4 Pro system, a 4K TV with a Premium HDMI input port (often marked in blue), and a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable. Users can of course use the HDMI Cable is included with PS4 Pro, but those who need to purchase a longer cable should remember to get one that meets the Premium High Speed HDMI spec.

The newer Premium High Speed HDMI format can display a 4K signal at up to 60 frames per second (60Hz). When using older High Speed HDMI Cables, users may experience issues such as flickering TV screens or images being displayed incorrectly.

Q: Is there anything else I need to know about PS4 Pro support on my 4K TV?
Given that 4K display standards and HDR features are still cutting edge, we recommend that you carefully consult your 4K TV’s manual and other reference materials to fully understand its capabilities.

Q: Will PS4 Pro support PlayStation VR?
PS4 Pro will fully support PlayStation VR just like the standard PS4. It’s important to note that PlayStation VR’s integrated display tops out at 1920 x 1080; it does not support 4K output. Also, the PS VR headset does not support HDR features.

That said, PS4 Pro’s upgraded processing power will give VR developers the ability to enhance their experiences with higher quality graphics, smoother or more stable framerates, and visual improvements in supported games. Developers can also choose to add PS4 Pro features to PS VR games post launch via a downloadable update.

Q: Which PS VR games will support PS4 Pro features?
As neither PS VR nor PS4 Pro has launched at the time of publication, we’ll wait until closer to PS4 Pro’s launch to begin confirming these titles.

4K Entertainment

Q: Does PS4 Pro support Ultra 4K Blu-ray Discs?
No, PS4 Pro’s internal Blu-ray drive does not support the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format. It supports the same Blu-ray Disc specs as the standard PS4. The Blu-ray Disc Player application, however, will support high-quality upscaling of DVD and Blu-ray Disc content.

Q: What 4K entertainment options will PS4 Pro support?
4K streaming apps for Netflix and YouTube are in development. Though 4K streaming is still in its early days, other services are likely to offer 4K video content in the future as well.

Q: Will there be any 4K PlayStation Store movies or TV shows?
There are no plans for this at PS4 Pro’s launch, but the PlayStation Network team is looking into it.

Other Questions

Q: How large is PS4 Pro, physically?
PS4 Pro is slightly larger than the original PS4 model introduced in 2013, and will measure approximately 295×55×327 mm (width × height × length).

Q: Will PS4 Pro owners have a performance advantage in online games when competing against standard PS4 players?
Generally, no. Playtesting and balancing is up to each game developer, and while it’s true that PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can drive smoother or more stable frame rates in supported titles, developers have many tools and processes they can use to prevent imbalances.

Q: Will there be any changes to Remote Play or Share Play with PS4 Pro?
Yes, PS4 Pro’s increased processing power can offer significant streaming benefits if the internet bandwidth is fast enough. Remote Play users on PC, Mac, or Xperia will be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p. Share Play users on a standard PS4 or PS4 Pro will also be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p.

With both Remote Play and Share Play, PS4 Pro’s adaptive streaming technology will attempt to optimize streaming quality to make the most of available internet bandwidth. For the best experience, we recommend a 15Mbps or higher connection and using a wired Ethernet connection (not Wi-Fi) whenever possible.

Q: Will the Share button capture higher quality game content with PS4 Pro games?
When playing a game with PS4 Pro features, using DUALSHOCK 4’s Share button will generate higher resolution gameplay clips and screenshots compared to the standard PS4. Specifics will vary by game, but some games will support full 1080p video capture, and screenshots at up to 3840 x 2160 (4K) pixels.

Q: Will I be able to Broadcast my gameplay at higher settings?
Yes. At launch, you will be able to broadcast a YouTube stream at as high as 1080p and 60 frames per second.

Q: Are Sony’s new 4K TVs a good fit for PS4 Pro?
While we won’t provide a specific recommendation for PS4 Pro at this time, Sony has a long history of designing TVs with advanced technology, and that reputation has extended to the 4K TV realm.

Q: What size 4K TV should I get?
We can’t give an official recommendation on TV size due to variables in room size, seating distance, and media types. 4K games and movies can feature up to four times the total resolution of a 1080p signal, so to take full advantage of 4K’s greatly increased fidelity, you’ll want a 4K TV that’s big enough to show it off comfortably.

Unofficially, the staff of PlayStation.Blog has observed good results in average living rooms with 4K TVs sized 60’’ and up. If you’re in the market for a new 4K TV for PS4 Pro, we strongly recommend selecting a model with HDR10 compatibility, which will enable increased image vividness and contrast in HDR10-enabled games and movies.

Q: If I’m using PS4 Pro on a 4K TV, and I’m playing a PS4 game without PS4 Pro features. Will it still output in 4K?
Yes, older PS4 games without dedicated PS4 Pro features will output at 4K when played on PS4 Pro and a supported 4K TV using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable. You will not, however, see any visual benefits without support for PS4 Pro features.

  • Sony, this should have been what the PlayStation 4 was on day 1. I would have sold the system at a loss with 2 controllers and the PlayStation Camera for $500. You would have made your money back in by units sold. Please add the 4k blu ray player and more teraflops before launch.

  • Not sure where all these misconceptions are coming from regarding the xbox.. People are comparing the slim model to the playstation pro as if its Microsofts console to compete with when it is just a slim xbox. Also it does upscale graphics for those saying it doesnt… It has a hdr function as well as uhd bluray and can stream 4k services like Netflix and that is just there slim console. And to the person making the 900p jab xbox one runs natively at 1080p they just cant keep frame rate up so to compensate they have a resolution scaler which lowers part of the image the screen currently displays to keep frane rate up. Sigh… Rant over… Now that I have said that, I think I will be getting the new PS Pro… I have held off buying a ps4 due to the price difference in Canada with it being 450 bucks for the longest time but now I see a console that really piques my interest. I will finally upgrade from my ps3!! So long for at least a little while PC gaming

  • My biggest concern is this: I recently upgraded my PS4 by putting. 2TB hard drive in it. I know the PS4 Pro comes standard with a 1TB hard drive, but in terms of storage capacity, it would be a downgrade for me to get the Pro. But I might still get it, if I can transplant my 2TB hard drive from my original PS4 to the Pro. Would it be possible to swap out the hard drives in the Pro like it is with the standard PS4?

  • It’s all about the gaming experience for me, and even with my 1080p tv currently, I’m excited for the visual enhancements to the games and rendering! Definitely picking one up shortly after launch.

  • This announcement was pretty disappointing for me. Still a weak console, you could of done a better job with the GPU. Also, I’m really enjoying everyone expressing their displeasure about no 4K blu ray player. You have an XBOX One S that supports it and you have guys like yourselves who invited the technology and not support it. It’s a joke. A very sad one too. If you would have increased the GPU power and included a 4K player, I would of gladly gave you 500 dollars for this. I’ll still be getting a Pro because I had a lot of Gamestop credit saved and I can always trade in my PS4 close to release date and it’s easily paid off. I know I’m going to get screwed over eventually because you guys will probably end up adding a 4K player for future Pros. You guys really dropped the ball. You’re being too over confident and cocky because you sold over 40 million Playstations. Doesn’t give you the right to BS us around with this once again, outdated console like 2013.

  • No sale for me either since there’s no 4K Blu-Ray disc support, which Infind to be absolutely baffling. I’m in no hurry to upgrade to 4K but I am willing to future proof my hardware for it as I did for some of my movies via 4K UHD Blu-Ray combo packs. Hopefully with the given specs this can be remedied via firmware update or a newer “Slim PS4 Pro” model. For crying out loud Microsoft’s latest console can play this why would Sony drop the ball on this?

  • Will the PS4 Pro be able to use external hard drives to expand storage capacity?

  • …and Sony continues to give me reasons for BOT buying the PSVR, and now also not buying a PS4 Pro. The lack of any features to improve remote play with the PS Vita, or other changes that would allow the PS4 to takeover the functions that currently require a PS3, such as the transfer of certain PSP games or overall downloading games faster through a console with a wired connection and then simply transfer via cable from PS4 to PS Vita.

The lack of commitment from Sony towards its customers is truly disheartening.

  • SONY are you going to respond to this: https://bethesda.net/#en/events/game/ps4-mod-update/2016/09/09/199

Seeing a PS4 Pro play Skrim with Mods is about the only reason I’d consider a Pro this winter. FIX THIS SONY YOU ARE BECOMING MICROSOFT OF 2013.

  • “Remote Play users on PC, Mac, or Xperia will be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p”
What about Playstation TV and/or Vita? Will it work even better for them too?
Yes, I still have a Playstation TV, still keeping hopes up. So, will it run better with PS4 Pro?

  • Nope sorry, Unless you fix your stance on Mods for Consoles not only have you lost my current gen support, you have lost my next gen support as well.

And as someone who has been a loyal Sony owner since pre-ordering PS1, this is not the biggest issue, but it is the straw that broke the camels back. removal of backwards compatibility (so you could charge for it) adding fees for online services that randomly don’t work. A customer service system that is incompetent at best and downright evil the rest of the time.

and now refusing Mod Support to games that other systems have and raising prices for your online “service”

  • Does anyone know if you can swap out the hard drive of the ps4 pro like you could with the launch ps4. i have a 2tb in my ps4 now and I wouldnt want to downgrade my hard drive space.

  • I wonder if he will support the hard drives of 15 mm

  • I love my PS4. Quite possibly it is my favorite console ever. I have over 300 games for the system. I barely played my PS3, hated the controller and loved the 360. I dislike the Xbox one for all its small quirks. Using my PS4 is faster and easier, and games don’t just die randomly every time I play anything.

All that said. The fact that PS4 will not have mods for fallout and skyrim, really bothers me. These are some of my favorite games. Mods are a really big deal. If I had known mods would never come to PS4 I would not have bought Fallout for this console. From now on any game that has or might have mod support on xbox, I will not buy on PS4. I spend more than $100 a month on games, usually 2 or 3 times that. I don’t like feeling like a company and a product I invested in is biting me in the butt. Bad form guys.

  • well the ps4 PRO support external hard drives? And I have a 6 TB black Drive on my ps4 now so the way your saying is I’ll have to have another one installed with the pro to transfer everything over why not just make it able to swap out the hard drives?

  • I have to say I want the pro, My problem is I can’t justify the purchase with no 4k blu ray drive. I want a 4k player so I’m going to have to look at the xbox s as it”s cheaper than a $400 stand alone player. I want to stay within the Playstation family of products and I’m not able to afford both a 4k blu ray player and the Pro so your forcing many of your customers to choose one or the other and with microsoft offering a cheaper 4k blu ray solution many of your customers will go that route. sorry no pro for me I was buying 4k blu ray in preparation of you offering a machine with 4k capabilities.

  • OK, so I have read all the concerns about this system not containing a 4K Blu-ray player and while I see your point of view I’d like to point out the elephant in the room. I know personally I stream 90-95% of my movie or TV content, I even pay for the 4K Netflix streaming option even though there is not very much content. For those of us with a 4K TV you already have multiple 4K streaming options. I do realize that the “Movie Nutz” love to buy over priced movies each time they are released(DVD, HD, Blu-ray, 4K UHD, ect.) But for those of us who want to play our VIDEO GAMES at a 4K resolution and higher graphic output then the PS4 Pro is for us.
I can’t wait to finally play COD or Madden or any other game on my 4K TV in actual 4K. Quit crying about not getting a 4K blu-ray player stick an ethernet cable into your TV and Stream it. The PS4 is only a stepping stone until the next console cycle arives so if you own a 4K tv Buy a PS4 Pro, If not then don’t. Give me some 4K Gaming anyday.

    • Stream your 4K Movies simple as that. It’s 2016 who buys physical copies of movies anymore? That’s why they invented digital media. It’s like saying because that Mercedes only has a CD player and Blu tooth I’m not gonna buy it because it lacks a cassette player. Last time i checked all the video stores and music stores were CLOSED. That’s because people do not buy physical media anymore.

    • I still buy physical media. Lots of people do. Some of us prefer quality over the convenience of streaming. Maybe you don’t realize this, but streaming does not yet reach the higher quality of video or audio that’s on a 4k bluray disc.

Amazon is closed? Best Buy is closed? Target is closed? Walmart is closed? All these places still sell physical media. Why? because people still buy it!

You got your Mercedes analogy wrong. Its like Mercedes coming out with a car that only has cassette player, but no CD player… that’s more accurate analogy.

  • PS4 PRO is designed to sit alongside PSVR (Period). I hope Sony will bring something gr8 to stand against Project Scorpio with more powerful hardware and a 3D 4K UHD Disc drive with 4K UHD Disc physical games in the near future. In the PlayStation Meeting they said this is not the next gen console, this is just an upgraded PS4 (only without 4K UHD bluray drive). It’s good they haven’t added 4K UHD bluray drive in the PS4 PRO because when it comes to 4K, many are just scratching the surface with the new technology. Since things are still 4K ready with HDR and all. I hope Sony have a choice to wait and give us a 4K UHD drive in the upcoming years when it’s a common format among consumers with a lot of 4K physical disc content to choose from, whether it be gaming or movies. I believe Sony is not going to giveaway its 40+ million supporters to Project Scorpio just like that, and I also believe they have something gr8 in mind in the year 2017 and beyond.

  • Just saying to all the people that say they are going to buy the Xbone just because Sony’s Blu ray doesn’t play 4k. Sony’s blu ray may not play in 4k, but their games will. Unlike Sony, Xbone games will not be able to play in 4k. Only Xbone’s bluray movies will be compatible to play 4k….not really sure why people are saying they will be switching over consoles, when the main focus should be games playing in 4k and not silly bluray movies. Its a gaming console, not a Bluray player. I’d rather own the ps4 what its meant for….playing video games…

  • Thanks, but no thanks. This console is completely unnecessary.

  • Will ps4 pro go good with a 1440p gaming monitor? Will it support 1440 p?

  • At least make a upgrade program like apple.

  • If you traded in your standard PS4 for a discounted PS4 Pro but put your saved data on a USB, can you transfer the saved data to the Pro via a USB?

  • Wow, Sony have made my decision surprisingly easy. No 4K Blu-Ray – No Sale. I cannot believe that they dropped the ball on this – a great shame.

  • Will I be able to change the hard drive of the ps 4 pro? And if yes… Can i take the HDD from my normal ps4 and run the ps4 pro with it?

  • I think it was a bad decision not to have included the Ultra Bluray Drive, now a lot a costumers looks streaming and have the necessary internet speeds, but many buy their movies in physical format and would expect the PS4 Pro or Slim had brought default Bluray Drive. Bad decision Sony!

  • I think we should all raise hell, boycott, and start a petition for Sony to add a UHD player to the Pro. We’re the consumers and we have the money and power!

I really hope it flops. Don’t care about VR.

  • Quick question to the spec people on here. I plan on getting the ps4 pro regardless. But I’m looking to get a gaming monitor again. Are there any current gaming monitors that are out now that would best suit what we know about the pro. I’m looking for all around effectiveness. Very fast response and looks good and makes sense ( nothing that has too many extra features that won’t matter on the pro). Any help people , want to stay in the 200-600 cost range if possible. Benq? Asus? Or just wait a bit

  • Hi Playstation

I have a question about activation. So far only one PS4 can be activated, but if I buy a PS4 Pro, can I also activate this one without deactivating the other one, so that I can give my previous PS4 to my kids so they can play my library of games with me? I used to do this with the PS3, hoping that can be the case with this one. Thanks in advance.

  • I have a question: The ps4 is for pro players they say. And it will take the games graphics up to 4k. Almost every gamer who take the game a little serious is playing on pc monitor. I have been asking in 5 different stores about this.

What 4k monitor should I buy if I want it to be able to play in 4k with 60hz with a hdmi cabel? Everyone say that it’s not possible without a new kind of hdmi. Every monitor you connect with hdmi and play in 4k will automatically set the screen to 30hz. Can anyone confirm that Sony have made this kind of hdmi that is able to show 4k graphics in 60hz ?

  • Will it be able to record gameplay at a higher resolution than 720p?

  • No 4K ultra Hd Bluray player???? Sorry, I will not buy if don’t have a 4k bluray player

  • You’re raising the price on PS+, no ultra 4k blu-ray disc AND no mods for Skyrim and Fallout 4. SO who wants to get a X-box one S?

    • I’m selling everything that isn’t exclusive and just upgrading my PC. Not going to bother with PS4Pro because of your exact reasons.

    • 1. Xbox Live is the same price.
      2. Most people don’t care about 4k. Among those who do, majority doesn’t buy movies on disks.
      3. Most people don’t care about mods.
      4. No one wants a console that can barely handle 720p gaming and doesn’t have any exclusive games.

  • Are we able to swap the HDD with a SSD? I’D installed a SSD in my PS4 and I would like to Transfer it to the PS4 Pro for the Performance gains.

  • I’m suddenly hungry for a sandwich. Strange ;)

  • Hey PSBlog. Here are some questions I have… Thanks so much for your help.

What kind of frame-rate improvements are we going to be seeing on most games running at 1080p? (I know that it’ll vary but on average). Will the PS4 Pro be able to handle 4K 60fps on games or 4K 30fps? Is it safe to say that if you have a PS4 Pro running on a regular TV that most, if not all the games, will run at 1080p 60fps? Will PS4 Pro improve load times?

    • The improvements will significantly vary by game, it’s impossible to provide uniform,a cross the board spec increases but there will be across the board lifts in the quality of the visuals.

  • Will doing an Ethernet Transfer allow you to move over games that have been removed from the PSN Store, such as PT?

  • I don’t understand the complaints. Sony will drop the world’s most powerful mass market gaming console in a little over a month’s time, a console with 4K HDR gaming and streaming power. Why should they include an expensive component that will provide no benefit to the vast majority who operate 1080p home theatres? People need to remember the console market caters to the mass consumer, trying to appeal to the niche is dangerous when making consoles. This also ignores the reality that most 4K screens and receivers will do a fantastic job of upscaling standard bluray to 4K.

    • Most current and potential PS4 owners don’t have a 4k TV.
Among those who have, a vast majority does not buy movies on disks.
The market is so small, I don’t get why people stirring so much **** over this.

  • Still no statement on 3D support?!?…When will 3D be supported on my PS4???…I have 2 3D movies I’ve bought from the PSN store that can only be played on my PS31?…3D isn’t dead if SONY and other manufacturer’s are still manufacturing 3D displays and they are still selling 3D movies both in the PSN store as digital copies as well as other outlets such as Barnes & Noble among other’s…They also tout stand alone BluRay players as being 3D capable…So where is the support from SONY for my PS4 to play 3D digital media being sold in their PSN store???…If your going to sell it, SUPPORT IT!!!…You’ll make more money and who knows, 3D might actually take hold when VR stumbles and dies after enough people strap on those headset contraptions and walk out into traffic looking for those danged Pokémon’s and get killed then people will realize that 3D glasses are safer cause then they will be able to see the stupid stuff and avoid it before they’re seen as complete idiot’s!!!…LOL…

Honestly, hood ornaments went out of style a few years ago!!!…Har, Har, Har!!!…

    • I wonder how many response’s this Nit-Wit is gonna get!?!…I just know there will be some hate mail coming his way…Duck and cover pal, it’s gonna get wild!!!…

    • … BrianDamagedBud…

um… Polarized Stereoscopic support in consumer grade televisions is dead. Almost “nobody” is pushing 3DTV as a bullet point feature; and most display panel vendors have stepped away from “officially” supporting the format. Sony doesn’t have a statement because the format died.

Put simply; polarized stereoscopic displays don’t handle dark colors due to raw physics. This can be seen across the entire range of 3DTV enabled titles on PS3; and any Linux/Windows system connected to a polarized stereoscopic monitor. This directly impacts the playability of a number of games ranging from Crysis to Trine; as well as quality of display playback for movies.

The LCD/LED/AMOLD/OLED Industry attention instead has focused on enabling deeper color ranges, faster response times, and higher pixel densities. In terms of market penetration; trackable sales figures show that the extremely small subgroup market that bought 3DTV’s are more likely to invest in Virtual Reality headsets which do not suffer from the limitations of polarized stereoscopic displays.

  • No 4k blu ray drive? seriously? the xbone slim has a 4k blu ray drive, how did Sony screw this up ? I am guessing the PS4 pro is only competing with the xbone slim, does this mean next year we will get another PS4 upgrade to compete with xbone Scorpio?

  • It’s HILARIOUS how people are whining about not being able to watch 4k blurays on this console.I could have sworn the whole reason this thing was made was for improved performance for games.

My only gripe is HOW much of our current library of games in going to get the PRO boost patch? There is a ton of PS4 games that could use the 1080p 60fps jump and Sony should be helping devs out with these upgrade patches.

  • Seriously Sony….30fps needs to be far less common now with anything running 1080p on the PRO

    I want more 60fps.

  • i hope GTA 5 gets a ps4 pro update. great game but at the limit of the ps4s capabilities.

i was initially disappointed with the lack of uhd bluray, but to be honest itll be a year or two before i get a 4k tv. by then standalone players will be cheaper. id rather use a standalone player for movies anyway, they use a lot less power and i dont want to wear out my consoles just watching a film. ultimately ill be getting the ps4pro to see improvements in frame rate and graphics not for watching movies. sony dropped the ball but i dont think its a big a deal as it seems.

    • People really focus too much on a drive. It’s a GAMING console after all. Being a media center is just a bonus. And honestly 1080p blurays look good enough.

  • My partner and I feel disappointed by the lack of 4k bluray support in the PS4 Pro. As a customer living in New Zealand I know 4k streaming just isn’t an option for me or a large majority of the country due to internet speeds. I’m very supportive of the new console overall… however, I believe the reasoning behind the decision to exclude 4k bluray support is somewhat narrow minded and was not made with consideration of the entire Playstation community.

  • Don’t forget to change the thermal paste. Sony uses really poor quality thermal paste. It was the cause of the PS3 YLOD. It dried out way too fast and caused severe overheating issues. When I bought my PS4, I came home, and before I plugged it in for the first time I took it apart, cleaned off that crap paste, and applied some Arctic Silver 5. My PS4 stays on stage 1 fan speed when idling, and never goes past stage 2 in game. If your PS4 sounds like a jet flying over your house then your paste is shot. Good thermal paste should last at least 3 years minimum. When I took apart my PS4 coming home from the store that paste inside was already starting to get stiff. Right off the shelf!!! Thermal paste should be wet, and gooey. Your PS4 will run much cooler, and quieter if you put some quality thermal paste in there. If you want to learn more about thermal paste search Muilisx on YouTube, go where it says search channel’s videos or whatever it says, and type in thermal paste. I have two detailed videos on it. One is called Thermal Paste Discussion, and the other is called Another Thermal Paste Video.

  • Will i be able to transfer JUST my data from old PS4 to a new Pro, with out wiping all the kids data on the original? Sure as hell hope so.

  • I have a question regarding the 4K,
Since the console will not have a 4K blu ray drive,
Will we be able to play games that are downloaded off the store at 4K?

    Thanks

    • Being able to play games in 4k has nothing to do with having a 4k drive.
Pro will use same disks as the old PS4.
4k drive is only for 4k movies (which you can also download and stream digitally).

  • One one side people complain that 4k player is missing, on other side people complain that noone has a 4k TV.
Make up your mind already, jeez.

  • NO Ultra HD 4K Blu-Ray player. R U Serious. This is a garbage attempt to deliver a all in one 4K entertainment unit. I’ve been with PlayStation since its birth. I’ve never felt like switching to XBox till now. Wow. For Christ sakes Aony defined the Blu-Ray standard. I held off from buying a UHD player because assuming it would be in the Pro being that it’s in the One S. Big smack in the face. Thanks Sony for the disappointment and showing your customers how much you appreciate them by delivering subpar technology.

  • I am a HARDCORE PS fan, mainly cause 3 360s gave me RROD, and PS has just better performance BUT No 4k blu ray support = No sale for me. I have no problem going to “The other guys” for a single unit $400 4k gaming system. Instead of $800 for console + 4k player. Im not even sorry about it. Capitalism will correct your mistake Sony. And SERIOUSLY?? Do you not remember why the PS2/PS3 were natural buys for people who want the new gen content?
