Adventures of Mana is Out Today on PS Vita

You’ve probably heard of the Mana series before, but just in case you’re unaware of it, it’s a famous and long running Square Enix franchise. Arguably the most famous entry in the series is Secret of Mana, which regularly appears in a lot of “best games ever made” lists.

The franchise actually began life under a completely different name — the first game in the Mana series is called Final Fantasy Adventure before the series changed names and became the Mana series.

Final Fantasy Adventure is an action RPG and was originally released back in 1991. It was remade as Adventures of Mana in Japan earlier this year and due to fan demand and also to kick off the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Mana series, we are bringing the PS Vita version of Adventures of Mana worldwide! If you want more good news then I’m happy to let you all know that you won’t have to wait long to pick up the game — in fact the game is available today!

So what is Adventures of Mana all about? Here’s a quick story overview:

Enshrined atop Mt. Illusia, high above the lofty clouds, stands the Tree of Mana. Drawing its life energy from the boundless celestial aether, the sentinel grows in silence. Legend holds that he who lays his hands upon its trunk will be granted power eternal — a power the Dark Lord of Glaive now seeks to further fuel his bloody quest for domination.

Our unlikely hero is one of countless gladiators indentured to the Duchy of Glaive. Each day, he and his ill-fated companions are dragged from their cells and bade to fight exotic beasts for the amusement of the Dark Lord. If victorious, they are thrown back into the dungeons with just enough bread to tide them over until their next match. But a body can only take so much, and it is never long before the weary captives succumb to their cruel fates.

The PS Vita version of Adventures of Mana features enhanced 3D visuals (the original was in 2D), revamped menus, and a rearranged soundtrack from the game’s original composer. The background music from the original version is also available in the game so if you want to go old school with the music, you totally can!

When Adventures of Mana was originally released, a lot of PS Vita owners were disappointed that we couldn’t launch it worldwide at the time. Since then, the development team have been working extremely hard to bring it over so I’m really happy to let you guys know that your voices were heard and the team is really happy to bring Adventures of Mana to the PS Vita community and celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Mana series with you all.

  • WE WANT “I’M SETSUNA” ON PS VITA!! HOW LOUD DO WE HAVE TO BE SQUARE ENIX? Im buying this to let you know Vita is not dead, even if Sony says otherwise.

    • But that port is terrible.
I love the vita but trust me, it’s not worth it.

    • It’s just some extra load times. Not everyone cares about loading waits.

    • That’s basically it really: If we buy the game we are making a case for support. I really hope this game makes it to the top #10 PSV PSN games list they post every month so we can prove that, contrary to popular belief, there’s a ton of people with a PSV who buys games~.

  • These screens look nice, never knew these games started out as Final Fantasy titles. Guess that explains the main character looking a bit like Warrior of Light and the Chocobo haha. I’ll be picking this up as soon as I get paid. Is it PS TV compatible?

  • Yasss. SE cone take all of the money i have. *throws money, PayPal account info, debit card info* Now, just give us I am Setsuna and the residents of Vita Island will be sated… for now… lol

  • please bring I am Setsuna to PSVita!

  • I still have the original remake of this, Sword of Mana, on my Gameboy Micro.
    Will definitely pick this up.
Hopefully we can get a port or remake of Secret of Mana, and maybe someday finally get Seiken Densetsu 3, easily the most beautiful game on the SNES.

  • Great – now will I Am Setsuna come to Vita as well?

  • This is great, thanks Sony and SE! I was really hoping to play this game on Vita and not iOS, and I will be purchasing as soon as I get through Suikoden II. Now, please release I Am Setsuna for the Vita in the west as well! I’m not interested in playing that on PS4.

  • THANKS FOR THIS ONE, SE!
    LONG LIVE THE VITA!

  • Thank you!!! Going to pick it up right away!

  • Glad you brought this to the US. Just wondering, is this Playstation TV compatible?

  • THANK YOU SE FOR THIS! Setsuna would also be fantastic on vita in the US as well!!! Please try and make this happen ^^

  • Thanks SE this is such a wonderful surprise. Now please consider I am Setsuna as well, even digital only would be fine with me.

  • We need I am Setsuna on Vita!

  • Is this game PSTV compatible?

  • Awesome, I just bought it. Please bring I Am Setsuna. Please.

  • Skate 4

…er, I Am Setsuna on Vita.

  • Appreciate the Vita love here. I’ll be buying this tonight. Excited to play it. Keep them coming!

  • This is amazing news!!! Will be picking this up, and keep my hopes up for I Am Setsuna to come West on the Vita as well!

  • YES! I have been hoping to play this on the Vita. I do not want to play a RPG on my phone.

  • This is a great month for vita owners! Thanks Square Enix for porting this classic over to NA :)

  • I am so HAPPY!

  • Already purchased. Any chance this could mean good things for a potential I Am Setsuna western release on vita as well?

  • Square you just made my day! I already bought the iOS version but happily put down another $14 for this one! The Mana series has been one of my all time favorites and I can’t wait to go through the remake of my favorite Game Boy game of all time.
    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

  • Bought day one. I love the mana series, own almost all of them, and I’m a die-hard Vita fan. Now if we could get Setsuna and SaGa on here too, that would be awesome!

  • Awesome! I’m really happy to see this! I won’t be able to pick it up for a while, but it’s exactly the type of RPG I love to play so it’s a definite purchase for me.

The chocobo in the picture makes me wish Chocobo’s Dungeon 2 could make its way onto the Vita as well …

  • Please please bring I Am Setsuna in English to the Vita!

  • This is an awesome surprise!

Now for “I Am Setsuna”! Vita Port please!

(Though Cross-Buy would be even better!)

  • Thanks for releasing this game in the West. I’m really looking forward to playing it.

I’d really like to see a western release of Seiken Densetsu 3! On any home console, with graphics, sound, and local co-op intact!

I’d like to give my support for Square-Enix to please create Brave Fencer Musashi 3 and release it digitally on PS3 and PS4, and then to create Brave Fencer Musashi 4 for PS4! Please. please, please!

It would also be cool for Square-Enix to release their old 8bit, 16bit, etc.., type games in collections like Taito Legends and Capcom Classics Collection.

    Thanks again!

  • MalodorousIntent

Thanks for this! I bought it. I hope we can also expect Romancing SaGa 2 on the Vita.

  • Now this is awesome. Totally picking it up! I wonder how different it will be from Sword of Mana, which was the remake that came out for the gba.

  • Great!, now just confirm I’am Setsuna and Dragon quest heroes 2 please. I’m looking foward to DQ Builders and WoFF both in vita

  • Way to go Square Enix!
A big THANK YOU for bringing this to the Vita stateside!

  • This is wonderful news. I’ll be first in line when you release the SaGa titles on Vita. Oh, and put SaGa Frontier 1 & 2 on PSN, pretty please.

  • More games on the Vita! Gonna pick this up together with ZTD when I have the money.

  • Saw Touch Arcade’s announcement on the iOS update (woot for GB BGM! Loved “Struggle to the Death” from SaGa2/FFL2 in TFFCC), and the update that it hit the EU PS Store. Just keep this trend rolling, SQEX!

  • The game is disabling wifi. I need to power off and on to get it back. Does anyone facing the same?

  • Thanks Square-Enix!
    I picked it up immediately.

I’ll do the same if you bring I Am Setsuna to the Vita too.

  • Thanks square, now could you please release the world end with you on ps vita? I hate playing it on ipad. Also please port all of your ios rpg games, I’m sure it will sold more on ps vita/ps4.

  • I really enjoyed Sword of Mana as a kid, and from what I’ve heard, it was just a radically different remake of this game. It’s really nice to see Square giving the Vita some support (Although a little advertising could’ve helped with sales, probably), so I’ll definitely consider picking this up.

  • region 3 please … !!!!! we south east asia need good game at vita …. !!!

  • Was waiting and hoping for this one!
    Thanks from Europe!

  • You, are the best Square Enix! I have always been a huge fan and knew you would come through for us vita owners!!! Now please please PLEASE bring I am Setsuna. You guys rock!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for listening SE, now if only we could get some of the other games released on Vita in Japan that were localized but not given to us on Vita… [Chaos Rings, all of them for example…]

But it’s nice to have this, the music is amazing.

    • Unfortunately, Chaos Rings will never happen. The creator of the series left a year ago and the games were removed from the Android store which leads me to believe there’s some copyright stuff going on in there. In short, I doubt there’s a chance to see those games again. Anywhere, not just on PSV~.

    • I had no idea. :( that’s a shame.

  • Now do I Am Setsuna!! :D

  • That’s for all the haters who said petitioning for Squeenix to reconsider was a waste of time. Credit’s due where credit’s due though, I’m glad that they reconsidered; getting this this weekend once I get a new PSN card~.

  • Hi:
It’s GREAT to know that there is still support for this WONDERFUL System. I hope we can get more and more games like this one.
    Red 5.

  • Bought and bought! Now how about I Am Setsuna on vita as well?? Please?

  • This is awesome. Bought it to show support and because I want it! Please keep as many titles coming as you can. I’ve got a ps4, but the vita is where I buy!

  • Nice to see you guys have a change of heart regarding Vita support. Now you just need to do Chaos Rings III Prequel Trilogy and I Am Setsuna to catch up (since Kawazu confirmed Romancing SaGa 2 is coming). I’ll let you off the hook for Spelunker since that’s F2P. ;p Then you need to grab Dragon Quest Heroes II and SaGa Scarlet Grace. That opens up the field for you to port Dissidia arcade and Final Fantasy XII to Vita!

  • YES! Thanks SE. Now the SAGA games… can’t wait for romancing saga.

Haven’t bought it yet but will on Friday. Anyone know if Vita version support D-Pad and buttons?

    • Yes, you won’t have to use the touch screen interface for it~.

    • Man, I bought this in hope showing support for the Vita will result in them localizing I Am Setsuna for the Vita, but jeeze… this game really is not that great. Probably a title that was better left dead.

I’m not liking this new precedent that we’re setting. That we’re so desperate for people to support the Vita that we’re willing to buy shovelware just to prove there’s a market for the handheld. No offense, but screw that. I think from now on I’ll only be buying good games on the system.
