No Man’s Sky Coming to PS4 in August

No Man’s Sky

Hello, Sean Murray from Hello Games here, working extremely hard on our game, No Man’s Sky.

The game really has come together, and it’s such an incredible relief. As we sit an play it now, and as I watch playtesters every day, I can finally let myself get excited. We’re actually doing this.

However, as we approached our final deadlines, we realized that some key moments needed extra polish to bring them up to our standards. I have had to make the tough choice to delay the game for a few weeks to allow us to deliver something special.

After a short delay, No Man’s Sky will launch in North America on August 9, in Europe August 10, and in the UK August 12.

Diplo on No Man’s SkyCreature on No Man’s Sky

We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we’re prepared to make the tough choices to get it right.

The universe of No Man’s Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn’t been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation.

And despite all of that, development is genuinely going well. This is the hardest working, most talented team I’ve ever worked with, and I’m so proud of what we’re doing. For all our sakes though, we get one shot to make this game and we can’t mess it up.

To the loyal community who’s stuck by our side since the unveiling of No Man’s Sky years ago, we hope you’ll accept our sincere apology and I am humbly asking that you’ll still look forward to exploring our universe despite the slight delay.

Thank you so much,
Sean

  • I’m genuinely taken aback at some of the comments regarding this delay. Here you have a small team, working on one of the most ambitious games to date. This is a career defining project for these guys. How can you expect anyone to be so committed to something over a long period of time and then decide to release it despite knowing that it wont be absolutely 100%?
Say the decision was taken to release on time anyway? Is that the sort of team you’d want making the games that we spend so much of our hard earned money on? I applaud Hello Games for demonstrating this level of scrutiny and this makes me even more likely to buy on day one, knowing that these guys are going to give me the very best product they possibly can for my money.
I’m sure all of the negative posters will find a way to cope for another 2 months without No Man’s Sky. After all Its not Hello Games job to find ways to enrich your lives. They just make software. If the absence of this makes you feel so frustrated and empty then I’d say it’s time for a bit of reflection.
Again, well done to Sean and the team for taking what must have been a gut wrenching decision, keeping us informed and showing the level of care to your craft that others could learn a lot from

  • Very good.
However, what excuse for the fact that – once again – the UK gets two fingers. How about a unified release for once, after all your pontification?

    • Totally agree. Last to get this game, from a UK developer! I don’t mind waiting a few extra months if it needs some tweaking. It’s only a game, not a liver transplant. And no issues with companies taking into account timezones when releasing a game. That’s common sense. But come on. 3 days later?

    • I agree, that aspect is as dissapointing as it is predictable. I’d be surprised if it was a decision taken by Hello Games however and comments in this thread are to be directed towards them surely?

    • @Nakatsu_Hime.

Blame Sony for that. They make those decisions not the software companies. :)

  • I’ve just cancelled my Amazon preorder made on the 2nd August 2015 as it is utterly ridiculous to have something on preorder for OVER A YEAR, it rankled with me that the Americans are getting a head start in the race towards the centre of the Galaxy. Why should there be an ADDITIONAL DELAY of three days in the country in which it was made? OVERWATCH managed to pull off a simultaneous worldwide release and I can see no practical reason why the UK release can’t be brought forward to midnight of the 9th and let the US be the previous day because of timezones.

    • londondungeon88

I agree with you completely mate, unlike half the idiots on here. I’ve been waiting for god knows how long for this game. Just for Sony to rip it from me again, and the reason I say Sony is because I honestly don’t think that it’s hello games fault. They were pushed by a faceless, evil, money grabbing company. And we are all suckers because of it.

  • londondungeon88

Only 71 days to go all you idiots!

  • Don’t think I’ll be “pre-ordering” anything anymore….. Stop putting hard dates on releases…. It seems to me that that is a bit much to ask, almost never deliver…. Besides I can’t afford anymore time off work, total BS. Look false hope IS worse then no hope. I get 5 days off a year… Thats it.. So effectively I have to wait another year before I’ll be able to play more then 5 mins at a time. Good job!?! Getting my money back….

    • theoneeyedpoodle

You can’t play before or after work and on days off? What the hell do you do for a living. You may need to seek other employment. At my job we earn up to 5 weeks off a year.

  • We’ve waited a couple years, we can wait a month. Looking forward to this game!!

    • theoneeyedpoodle

Tell that to a prisoner who waited a couple years for his release date and now he has to wait two more months.

  • Give me strength! The sense of entitlement from the emotionally underdeveloped people posting on here is tragic. People who are now not going to buy the game because it’s been delayed by 6 weeks. First world problems,eh.
There are people dying in the mediterranean trying to escape war. There are people losing their homes, starving etc etc… There are people who think Trump is the right man to lead the most powerful country in the world. These are just a couple of things to get angry about.
A videogame that I can’t wait to play gets delayed by 6 weeks… Get over it amadání
Oh well I’ll just enjoy my summer some other way until it finally comes out.
Best of luck Sean and the Hello games team. Do what ye have to do. Don’t feel bad about it. Ignore the whinging self-entitled gowls out there.
When ye’re happy with the game, set it free.

  • Let’s not expect an honest answer re the UK’s poor-cousin release position.
I agree that this may not be Hallo Games’ fault. If it was, shame on them. A UK-based operation snubbing the UK!! It’s more likely to be SCEA ensuring that the septic-tanks get first dibs or they’ll stamp their feet and send in the drones.
God forbid we can upset the American Empire.

No. Absolute cobblers! This is just a futher example of game’s publishers pandering to politics (because I bet you it’s a commercially political desicion).
In this would companies are perfectly capable of a worldwide release. No question. Perhaps Hello Games will come to regret any arrangment they were poleaxed into with all the cancelled preorders that will occur.

Come on guys. Don’t destroy the game before it’s even released.

  • Honestly, I do not believe that the game will be out by August; not when PlayStation VR will be released in October. Most likely PS will make a bundle deal to help rocket sales. I am not saying that I am not upset for the delay, but because I work in the software industry I understand delays from both sides of a project.

For those who say that you are angry and immediately grab their refund…most likely your a childish individual and need the money because you don’t work anyway…or, you were hoping to fill you days with this game and now have no clue what to do. Yes, a little harsh but let’s face it those who get angry over a video game release are the people who want instant gratification and will look for everything wrong in the first place.

For me, I enjoy what Hello Games is doing and applaud them for taking on such a grand venture. Keep up the great work.

As far as release differences go, talk to your government about releases being later in the UK. There are many articles as to why releases happen the way they do and it basically comes down to marketing.

    • I don’t think Mr Cameron & Co have much leverage on which day Game, etc decide to begin stocking a game.
      It’s all commercially-driven decisions.

My point was that we’ve had unified releases before. Why the 3-day delay. Why ANY delay?

    • londondungeon88

Who the Hell are you to make assumptions like that. I can guarantee I have a much harder job than will ever have, I make plenty of money. I just don’t like being lyied to, so don’t you dare judge me while your sat behind your desk if your cushy software industry job. Because your out of your element!

    • Speculation. Imagination. Rationalization.

Condemnation. Supposition. Irritation. Procrastination. Gratification. Excoriation.

      Appreciation. Motivation.

      Misdirection.

  • Neeerd Raaaage! No no no no Bro! I demand retribution. Sean murray must shave his luxuriously manly beard with a butter knife as an act of atonement for delaying my travels to the center of the universe!

Or just bring Joe Danger back on the PS4 and all will be forgotten and forgiven :)

Seriously, no biggie :) Pre-ordered my limited edition at Amazon and i’m looking forward to it! Luckily i got the whole month of August off, so between going to the beach, doing stuff around the house…I’ll be chillin’ in my Man cave playing No Mans sky and Deus Ex on BiG screen in full surround sound ;)

  • Something thatreally bugs me is not the delay, its the release date. Im from the uk and last time i look were still in europe. So can someone please tell me why we get this game 2 days later than the rest of europe.

    • So ive got to watch people posting this game 3 days before i can even play the game. Nice 1 sony dont worrie about the uk.

    • My point exactly.
It’s not as if release date loomed and suddenly, the discovery was made that there was insufficient stock, then fine, but we are months away and already the pecking-order has been decided. Also, there’s no weekend involved in that date-range.

I can understand the PS4 / PS3 hardware date schedules where Japan was first, etc, but distribution of disks?
Also, as we all know, retailers receive the disks days before release, just embargoed, so an even bigger why.

Yes, it’s not the end of the world, but this is a common occurance, and with no immediately apparent obvious reason.

    • It’s weird that you guys get it later than anyone at all, Hello Games is UK based.

    • Certainly weirder than a weird thing found on a weird planet in NMS…..eventually. :)

    • OVERWATCH managed a simultaneous worldwide release, so why not No Man’s Sky?

  • Ever since the launch of this title, I have been very excited to see the release of this game, but I was also a bit skeptical on how little details there were to go off of. I have followed every update from posts on IGN, Forbes, etc. to try and piece together what exactly I will be doing in No Man’s Sky, and now I am completely hooked on it. I would say that I cannot wait for this game’s release, but honestly, I can because it makes me even more comfortable knowing that Hello Games is admitting that the game is not ready yet and FIXING it before its release. I remember how hyped I was for the release of Destiny, and even though I still love the game, I am repeatedly disappointed by it because it should have waited. Now, I am constantly bombarded with updates that Bungie puts out to “fix” it.
I’m sorry, Sean, that you and the rest of the Hello Games team are facing so much criticism. I’m still excited for your game, and I’m keeping my pre-order open. Good luck! (:

  • If it means a more polished game than take all the time you want. It’s not like most of us don’t have at least another dozen or so games to keep us occupied until then.

  • I know you are a small studio, and its nice you are taking incentive to fix it before release. Some don’t.

However, MANY news sites reported this a WEEK prior to the official confirmation. Once it became apparent, you should have said something back a week ago when sites were doing it for you.

Sadly, I am going to cancel my pre-order from GameStop. The game looks great, but this was going to be my game to play through summer until my college classes start up. What a bummer.

I guess its Fallout 4 and the upcoming mods in June for me…

    • The silence from Sony and Hello was frustrating, but it was hardly a week. Kotaku broke the story Wednesday night, and it was made official Friday night. 2 days. Less than one third of a week. I’m disappointed with the delay, as well, but if they believe it needs more polish, I’m inclined to trust them on that. It really sucks that it’s now coming at a time when you need to focus on school instead, but look at the bright side – if the reviews are good, you’ll have something awesome to do over winter break. And, as long as you avoid center-of-the-galaxy discussions, the game CAN’T be spoiled for you, as your journey will still be totally unique to you

    • Just think about how much better Fallout 4 would have been without the plethora of glitches and bugs. Imagine if it was actually COMPLETE, like No Man’s Sky will be. ;)

  • HMMMMM it looks like Gamefly is special and will still receive their copies on June 21st. The release date has not changed on there. Either that or someone hasn’t let them know about the change yet.

    • Steam also says june 22 here in Europ, which makes me think PC release isn’t delayed. Ofcourse i don’t get my hopes up since it probably will be changed to August…

  • Everything is good guys… take your time … :D

  • I’m a 20 year old college student with 2 jobs in the summer and 1 part time during the school. During the summer is the only time I’m reasonably able to say I can “play” games. Your release date is the day I go back to school… it seems video games are being catered more and more to the fat adult slobs that can afford to sit around and do nothing all day.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

Speak for yourself, college boy.I am a SKINNY adult slob who works 40 hours a week,so I can afford to do whatever the phuck I want to do.So don’t forget to do your homework and I don’t want to hear your dog ate it.

  • To the keyboard warriors here, just cancel your preorders and be done with it! Nobody needs to see your overly rude and under thought comments about the delay. It’s just another month, nothing to get your panties in a twist over. And don’t forget that big corporations like Rockstar Games have delayed less ambitious games in the past, so delays should be expected from a more ambitious game from a smaller team.

To Sean and Hello Games, it disappoints me, but I know that we are very close to the release date even with that delay. I also know that you do have one shot at this game, so make it spot on. I completely respect a small team trying to make a game like no other, and a delay certainly won’t make me hate the game. Take all the time you need to polish it right and good luck!

  • Keep up the great work guys. I’ve been following this game and patiently waiting since 2013. While, I’m disappointed, I know the final product will be amazing and everything I want it to be. Since I was a young boy I’ve always wanted to fly my ship around the universe. This game will fill those dreams. What’s two more months when we’ve been waiting for 3 years? Just please don’t “Last Guardian” us!! Take care and Godspeed.

  • While I do understand I am disappointed. I do agree with other post tho how about a demo of it till it’s ready to play.

    • Interesting notion. Maybe one system, or no way to build a hyperdrive.

Of course, it could backfire if there is not enough depth to the game that people get bored of it.

  • I completely understand the delay. Take your time. My only problem is that I gave you $60 for a game that was scheduled to release June 21st. That promise has been broken. In return, I think everyone who pre ordered deserves their money back. Just like Uncharted 4 refunded people’s pre orders. You guys should do the same.

    • Your money isn’t taken until just before it finally releases. It’s a little tricky, but if you ordered from the PlayStation Store it is possible to cancel a preorder by going into Settings > PlayStation™ Network / Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Transaction History whereupon you select the date bracket during which you originally placed the preorder. As the preorder didn’t debit your wallet yet, ignore all entries where the Amount column is more than £0.00

Unfortunately, unless you can remember the precise date you preordered it you will have to slog through each £0.00 entry at a time, pressing (X) on each of them in turn to see which are preorders and which are free DLC and free PS+ games. Eventually, if you are patient and haven’t picked totally the wrong date bracket, you will see a page that says:

      Purchase Order £0.00

      No Man’s Sky £0.00

      Payment from Wallet £0.00

      [ Cancel Pre-Order ]

      ^

whereupon you can press this button.

  • I really like the heart put into this delay, I like how Sean murray mad it about the fans not the money in like homefront Rev that wasn’t even finnished. Really I won’t even ba able to play this summer anyway.

Thank for putting forth the effort for a good game

  • Jesus people. To everyone crying and moaning: Newsflash YOU ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY!

How bad was The Division’s launch? Assassin’s Creed: Unity? Battlefield 4?

Rushing games out is what causes us to end up paying money to be beta testers. I’d rather them take the time to get it right rather than rush out an unfinished/broken/buggy game.

These same people causing out a video game developer over a blog are the same people that would be just as vocally loud and abusive over a broken/buggy game experience if it launched with problems.

This announcement is a double edged sword for Sean. He either lets it go through with whatever issues they discovered and gets abused for “releasing a broken game” or he gets abused for delaying it.

I love video games, I really do. I’ve been playing since the Atari. However I am absolutely disgusted to be a part of such a sick, toxic and vile community.

Sean, not sure if you read these comments, but from one human being to another, keep your chin up. **** happens. Good luck, and I’ll be rescheduling my time off for the release to get the chance to really delve into your end product.

  • I hope both Sony and Hello Games have learned the pitfalls of announcing a game too early. The peak of hype for this game has long since passed, so I really doubt another 2 months will make much difference. A shame, but I still hope it turns out to be a good game as I may pick it up eventually (definitely not at release though, that’s just not smart to do anymore with the way modern games are released).

Good luck and all the best.

  • Looking forward to this release. I love space and everything that has to do with it, so Hello Games I’m counting the days till August 10th :)

  • I am as disappointed as the next person in the delay but acting like entitled babies is not going to help the situation. It is what it is and Hello Games does not owe you anything.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

Hello Games does if those people gave them $60.

    • In generic terms, a Pre-Order purchase is a consumer’s choice to buy a product before it’s released to market. If the company selling the product decides to offer perks to that consumer for Pre-Ordering, that is the only thing the company owes you when the product (game) is released. A Pre-Order purchase is, especially with a Video Game, a gamble, when referring to a release date.

A company is not legally bound to deliver a product on that date, unless the customer individually has a contract with the company with stipulations on what occurs when the company doesn’t deliver. Companies can decide to delay release of a product, regardless of what the product is. There will most likely be financial-, reputation-, market-, and vendor-related impacts to that decision, of course.

If you want to make the choice to cancel your order to stick it to Hello Games / Sony, you have the right to do so. If you decide to wait it out, you will get your Pre-Order benefits and get the game when it’s released, and receive what you Pre-Paid for.

      Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for delaying this by a few short weeks to bring a better game,I can only imagine the pressure your team must feel. So kudos mad keen for this game.p

  • Take back my previous comment, this article wasn’t done by Sean! This was a hack on Sony!

  • Is the PC version also delayed? Cause Steam still says 22 june here in Europe…

  • I’ve been following the development of this game since 2013 and I’m still dying to get my hands on it. It’s the kind of game I’ve wanted to play since I was a kid!

That being said, since I know how difficult game development is, I’d rather your team take the time you need to design the best game possible.

    Still excited!

  • You have my full support, and if more time is needed for extra polish then patience is virtue.

Oh, and my backlog thanks you!!!

  • With all of the coming announcements at E3, you guys better bring the hype to stay relevant. You owned the ENTIRE SUMMER with a June release, but August is really close to the fall & holiday lineup and more people may become content with the notion of waiting for other soon to be released titles. So show them at E3 why they shouldn’t! Bring the hype!

  • You should released it before anyway.. A lot of people has cencelled events to be able to play this game during their summer vacations and now you are saying that people will be able to play this game only when they’ll get back to work/school and they won’t have the time to even play the game, really disappointed with your company, I preordered my copy of the game on the PS Store, I personally don’t care if the game is not perfect when it will be released as long as there will be patches in the future. I can wait for patches, but not for the game, you should consider that gamers are used to products being unfinished when being released and they don’t even care anymore, just make the patches some time after the release date and everyone will be happy..

    • Ugh, the comments section can be disheartening. On the one hand, people who say… “Release it broken & patch it later! We just want the game!” while others would piss & moan about the game being broken trash, overhyped, and not worth the money if it was rushed.

I say this… Make sure it’s ready. Keep it in the oven long enough to deliver a “meal” that is pleasant. Overcook it, and people won’t have an appetite for it anymore. Under cook it, and it will not satisfy their hunger. It’s up to the chef to make it “just right”. So it’s in their hands at this point. People are obviously still hungry for it, but E3 could change that. Hopefully, the decision to delay proves worth it.

  • Yeah I’m disappointed too. Pre-ordered on the PlayStation store. Scheduled time off to dive into it. I guess I should stop expecting release dates to be honored and shouldn’t preorder games if I can’t get a refund. I would have rather used the money for a game I could play on the scheduled time. They make it sound like it’s only a few weeks. It’s more like 6 weeks and who knows what will happen by that time. They are going to make millions of money from this. I wonder out of the thousands or more people who preordered this, how many paid hard earned money and eagerly anticipating it will die before then. That will be money they paid to a company and didn’t get to enjoy their product. I wonder what percentage of that money will be from dead people who will never download it. It just got me thinking. Too bad they couldn’t just have a beta ready at least.

  • JaseDarienDakota

While I’m really rather quite disappointed, I’m happy to know the game’s getting extra time to be polished and tested. You guys are making an incredible game that I can’t wait to play. You guys do you. Get it right. Get it amazing. I’ll be here to play it when it’s ready.

  • Either way I can’t wait for this game! Take your time to perfect it. Also a demo would be cool!

  • Hello Games, y’all are awesome. Who woulda thought that building a Universe Sized Game would be so difficult?!? You’re building something that’s never been done before and I appreciate the imagination, ingenuity, and frank, open communication you’ve had. Don’t pay attention to the impatient, sense-of-entitlement people/gamers who are throwing negative juju at you. Keep up the hard work, and get it right. Can’t wait to go exploring through your stars in August.

  • It’s 2 months, it could’ve been way worse. I’d rather take a complete game late than a broken one early. And if any of the people cancelling their preorders has a limited edition preorder, I’ll gladly take that off your hands too

  • Ok.. You move the date I remove 1 of my pre-orders move the date again and I’ll remove the other one….

  • BriBrainBlender

What sucks is that the Playstation digital purchase system is not at all consumer-friendly. There is no refund and pre-order sales are final, seemingly regardless of the actual delivery of the game, delayed or otherwise. It’s like, “Give us your money, now shut-up!” I usually don’t pre-order anything for this and several other reasons. For some reason I thought I was somehow giving the development team a demonstration of my faith in what they were working on. But I knew that the only people that I’m reaching are the bean counters.

    • Unless you have 1 steam and 1 PSN Steam Cancelled for now see if they keep there next release date!

I’m keeping it simple and keeping them honest

    • I’m pretty sure you can cancel a pretty order in the settingsame menu. I’m not exactly sure where but I bet Google knows. Check your account management/payment section.

    • Incorrect. You can cancel a preorder up until just before release. There is still time to do so. Check my earlier post 212 on how.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

“Give us your money, now shut-up!”
      Religion works the same way.

  • I have been beyond excited for this game for so long now. I understand that a game like this is going to take time but why make a release date if it is going to be pushed back. I’m getting really tired of games getting release dates that are more than likely not going to be the actual date. Very disappointed.

    • I don’t understand why Sean Murray didn’t finish the game and send it off to be put on discs and whilst that was happening tell us the release date when it was physically impossible to delay it. After all, it is not as if this game needed any more hype.

  • I’d really hate to be a game developer and have to delay a game for a few weeks, because all i see here is a bunch of babies crying about a game being late, smh. most of whom sound like a bunch of over privileged little girls, the game is going to be late, now take a deep breath and live with it,it’s not like there isn’t any other games out here we can’t play for gods sake grow up,to the understanding people or should i say the grown up gamer’s good on you for taking a stand and understanding and not jumping on the, this isn’t fair band wagon, right i’m off to go play a few games now while i cry because NMS isn’t coming out until August, smh again. ;-)

  • While I’m certainly a bit disappointed to read that there will be a delay, I’d much rather wait a few more weeks than to get an on-schedule release that has problems, and have to wait anyway for a patch. Used to be that all developers did it this way, until someone got the idea that it was more important to hit a particular street date than to deliver a quality product from day one. I hope more developers follow Hello Games’ lead and return to the quality-first philosophy.

  • Sean said this our game he really doing it fo the players. Also, it really is a new kind of game with no boundaries. The hello game crew is probably working many hours to get what they feel is right for us. I can wait as long it takes for our game to feel right to play.

  • I need to ask, why does pre-ordering from gamestop offer better stuff(IMO) than pre-ordering from sony? I think its dumb.

  • That’s chill man.

  • As much as I was looking forward to June 21st, I’d much rather have a more polished game to play than one of the numerous buggy hot messes that have been thrown at us from the AAA devs in recent years. (Looking at you, Tony Hawk 5)
Now, if you wanted to offer beta access to pre-order customers, I wouldn’t be offended in the least :)
Cheers, Hello Games – see you in August!

  • Take all the time you need. It is your creation, you decide when it is ready, ignore everyone else.

  • Are you kidding me right now you show us this game and say it will come out in 2015 then you take that back then finally you give it a release date for June 21 and I did the happy dance because June 21 is also my birthday I got so happy. Then you delayed it to August and by the way moving it to August is not a couple of weeks is a Month and a half. When you delayed it you took the magic from me I don’t even know if I’m going to buy the game now. And you put the delay at the end of summer break now i can only play it for a week until I have to go back to college. And I don’t care if I shoot under a tree and it floats I don’t care if the game is really polished. Don’t be a perfectionist just accept the game is not going to be perfect and if you keep this delay you should at least give us a demo like a planet to walk on or a solar system to play around in. I’m so disappointed

    • Its all a conspiracy mate! Hello games got together and said ‘It’s baconlovers birthday on 21stJune, lets delay the game”
      Pullleeeeezeeeeeeeee!!!! ;)

  • No worries Sean. Whether it comes out June August or December, us true NMS fans will play this game into retirement. Take your time. Thank you for your efforts. My baby girl will be born on the 6th. 3 days before your release. She and I will start this voyage together. Until she’s ready to receive the controller of destiny. Lol.
