PS Plus: Free Games for January, 2016

As we look forward to the New Year, we’re excited to share our January 2016 PlayStation Plus lineup with everyone. This month our PS4 games pay homage to a couple classic, fan-favorite titles, while updating the gameplay and graphics to PS4!

Hardware: Rivals makes its exclusive debut on PlayStation Plus. Get behind the wheel of a powerful tank or mobile attack jeep in this arcade-style, vehicle combat game. Inspired by the PS2 classic Hardware: Online Arena, Hardware: Rivals lets you challenge your friends or enter the online multiplayer arena on your own and experience epic vehicular mayhem with multiple maps, game modes, and special events.

If you need a breather from all the vehicle-on-vehicle combat, you can always turn to the twisted Mexican folklore of Grim Fandango Remastered. As Manny Calavera, travel agent for the Department of Death, you’ll guide poor souls to their eternal rest. Crime. Skeletons. Romance. You’ll experience it all in this update to the beloved adventure game.

These PS4 games are free for PlayStation Plus members starting on the first Tuesday of January, and you can find the full list of PlayStation Plus games below.

the PS Vita is getting two three-year-old games, one that had 5/10 review scores and one that was a mobile game
the PS3 is getting one three-year-old game that got 5/10 reviews and a decent six year old game.
the PS4 is getting what appears to be a lazy port of a good old game that you can buy for about £4, and an unknown indie game.

Hardware: Rivals is going to have to be amazing, but otherwise this is the weakest lineup I’ve ever seen. It seems such an odd time to pull this too – I know PS4 is doing well but I don’t think they can just stop dead and expect the momentum to last another five years.

I played Hardware: Rivals in Beta and there were quite a lot of things I didn’t like about the game.
1. You’re forced through the simple tutorial and cannot skip it
2. There’s players in the game (beta mind you) that can kill you from across the map without even a clear line of sight!
3. It’ll take some good teamwork to manage taking out a tank if you’re in a Jeep.

I don’t recommend it. Maybe Grim Fandango is a good pickup but I’ve only seen reviews and never got into the game myself.

WHY do you guys insist on calling these games “free”, when they are quite clearly not?

You have to pay to access them and you lose access if you don’t pay for them.

They are not free.

I doubt I’ll be renewing my subscription next time. The last good game for ps4 was Rocket League. I tried the trial for Hardware, got boring after 10 minutes. X-box here I come!?

Aren’t people just misunderstanding what PS+ games are supposed to be for? It’s not for ways to get free AAA games as most people think it should be (which no big publisher is likely to allow until well after people stop buying it so upwards of a year or more). It’s a way to introduce you to some games that you would never buy on your own that you might like and a way to give Indie developers exposure (since everyone thinks Indies are trash, almost as much as everyone thinks open world is the end all be all of the ultimate game (I’m more of a linear fan myself))

I would never have bought rocket league based on what I thought it would be but being free gave me the opportunity to enjoy it and see that it is worthwhile. I also never would have bought Gravity Rush and I think it’s pretty much the best game on the vita. Similarly I would never have bought Grim Fandango but now I have the opportunity to play it.

This is very disappointing. One of the main reasons I got a PS4 was to enjoy what PS+ has to offer…but not if they’re shoveling out stuff most of us don’t really want to play. I even upgraded to a 1tb hard drive.

Seriously, not worth the disrespectfully slow download times, although Dragon Age looks interesting, it’s still a last-gen title. It seems like devs are more concerned with rehashing and remaking last-gen games, which is not why I bought a current-gen system.

They’re making it rather difficult for me and I’m sure for many others, to justify spending so much money on the hardware on top of the mandatory $50 for PS+.

Realistically the lineup offered was pretty awesome the first few months I had this almost two years ago, it has been abysmal this last year. I have all major consoles and Xbox has been outperforming PS in this area. Honestly I would upgrade the quality of this list if DA:O was available on PS4 but I don’t like having to dust of the PS3 for that kind of thing. Mostly it seems like indie games every month anymore. Not that some aren’t good, but it would be nice to get one indie “fun” game and one real game every month.

On that DA:O being on PS4 deal it seems like Xbox is poised to outperform PS in this area more with backwards compatibility. If they figure out to offer their wealth of AAA 360 titles as Xbox One free games its an instant home run. Can you imagine a lineup with Fable, Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption (way overdue for next get free), Dragon Age, Bayonetta, Dark Souls, etc.

PS is actually better positioned with exclusives and could answer with Last of Us, God of War, Kingdoms of Amalur, Demon Souls (PLEASE!), Ratchet and Clank, etc on PS4 but they don’t seem as in position to get backwards compatibility up and running.

Good line-up.

Unfortunately, 85% of people here know almost nothing about videogames and complain every month. The majority of them only have Plus to play online, and that is rather illustrative of the opinion scenario seen here. Before the release of PS4 Plus was better, without a doubt, but it is still a good service on what game offers concerns. Some say that it’s only the PS4 offers that fail, well, they are weaker than the PS3 ones of two years ago, that’s right, still, not actually bad.

If you press ctrl+F and type “indie” you can see the baffling opinion some people have about them. I’ve even read this somewhere:

“Guacamelee Super Turbo Ed. = 2/5
Broken Age = 2.5/5
TRANSISTOR = indie trash
Olli Olli 2 = super indie trash 0/5”

Gaming knowledge: 0/5. One can have an opinion or personal taste, but is just foolish to say something is not good instead of saying “I don’t like it” when it’s a fact that all these games above are good, some VERY good. Slowly, I’m starting to fully understand the term “peasant”, and my main platform is a console.

  There’s nothing wrong with people that don’t have gaming knowlegde, the problem is that people don’t know to separate their opinion about a game from its quality (and not only games). There are games which I don’t like, but I can recognise the quality anyway and say: “I don’t like this game, but it is good”. That’s the problem here also, chiefly with Grim Fandango.

And i’m as much an admirer of art as anyone else who enjoys museums or galleries, however that isnt why i play games. I can appreciate art in all its forms, even view nature as such, but again, i play games for the “FUN” factor or entertainment value, not because i’m wowed by program languages or simply the aesthetic.

You look at someone’s trophy list or profile or whateva and then believe you can assess someones experiences, howeva that is only a tiny snapshot of anyone and hardly indicative of much, outside of that tiny snapshot.

Crap, just crap. As always. Hardware came with the online adapter for PS2 a decade ago. The beta only just looked better but played exactly the same. PS3 games are always better and I’ve bought into your new gen sony!

I have to agree with most of the comments here. It’s a pretty crummy business model to alienate your customers by offering titles for free, days after putting them on sale. This happened to me with Metal Gear GZ….I vowed to never buy a game off the PSN again. I download the free stuff from time to time, Home Grown a few months ago, played it once or twice…it was a beautiful game but just not my cup of tea. I understand that it’s too easy to be narrow minded and desire to have the PS+ games catered to my personal tastes…but the volume of outcry makes me feel like I’m not in the minority here. Unfortunately, Sony is killing the XBox in sales so why change?? Personally, I will not be re-subscribing and encourage anyone upset to do the same. The only way they listen is through their wallets.

I’m happy to see Grim Fandango on there. Always wanted to play it, never got around to it.

Generally though, PS+ has been pretty lacklustre for a while. I still feel like I’m getting my money’s worth, but not as much as I was in the earlier days. PS4 has seen few big releases, and while there’s nothing wrong with indies, the sheer amount of them in the PS+ line up makes me hesitant to buy them in the store.

And DA:O is great, but come on, it was out in 2009.

cant even login to psn now due to error code:WS-37397-9, it has not been 5 days yet since I bought my ps4 and already thinking of returning my ps4 for a Xbox One. Sony support is not helping and neither is the ps plus offering any good games.

Very sad I only see crapy games on here I want some high end titles not junk indies or half rate games that should be on a cellular phone, plus might I add come out with stuff for your phones whered all that hype go I went through hell to get my Xperia Z3v and now I can’t even remote play over the 4g it must be WiFi, I had it on 4g before what happened why can’t I do that.not to mention there’s not much feeling or data base for my SONY phone it just feels like an android with a tiny few apps actually from Sony in pretty let down oh and let’s get on another thing before I’m done, my Sony phone has a great thing in sure you know about that allows me to link and pair my ps4 controller but nothing on the phone uses it no games nothing, but then you recommend the same junk as my Android if I wanted a shot phone I would have baught one in trying to take the step with my Sony and it was a trip on my face it seems. So sad there is much potential here please think more. Make it happen I want don’t features and games not Google we should have more here to have a solid floor with Google in the basement step up not down make Sony primary for games and networking then add Google, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND! You mean Fallout 4 isn’t free?!?… You may not like every game that comes out on Plus, but guess what, you pay for Plus for online play. The discounts and free games are an added bonus. If you want access to a ton of games for one flat rate, they have something for you called PS Now.

The last 6 months or so have been horrible games with the exception of Rocket League. I have had no interest in downloading any crappy indie games like this..at least throw in the odd good disc based game…Xbox is looking more and more appealing when you compare the lineups lately… When plus first came out there were so many good games and now this is insulting..nothing to even argue with my friends that PS4 is better than Xbox now… I’m leaning towards getting Xbox…

Sony, can you please stop to bring indy games after indy games on psplus that most people dont wanna play months after months??? People wants REAL GAMES.. not indy 2d games that you can play on your cellphones or can have on steam for almost free already!!.. im sure youre able to bring KNACK or Infamous Second sons or Watchdog or Kilzone shadowfall to everyone.. its already sold 10$ in stores…. or you can give some JRPG for free on psplus also… i never saw you gives that on ps3,ps4 and VITA

I have been a PS Plus member since it’s inception, back on the PS3.
I remember getting much, much better titles each month.
I used to actually look forward to the first Tuesday of each month..
Since I got a PS4 though, I have to say that I’m less than impressed. Each month now it seems, less and less forethought and effort are put into giving PS Plus members games that EVERYONE will like.
It seems as if SCEA is catering more and more to a narrowing minority of PS Plus members that will be happy with the fecal matter that is being shoved down our throats lately.
I myself, would be happy to pay a bit extra (say, $10-$20 a year) to provide SCEA with a bit of capitalist incentive to get back to their PS Plus roots and actually start giving a damn about EVERYBODY being satisfied again.
Just my two cents (or 10 because of inflation) take it or leave it, it’s your choice.
My suggestion is that, if you feel the same way that I do, MAKE IT KNOWN.
Please don’t just continue to sit there with your thumb in you sphincter any longer!
SPEAK UP!! Make your voice heard!

  I second this. I had PS Plus for the free PS3 games for a year or so before PS4 came out. It was crazy the games we got. In the meantime, it seems like most of the money from the current PS4 sales and PS Plus subs goes directly to Playstation VR and not the network itself nor the games. Even if it seemed to go to first party that would be cool.

Honestly, there’s a lot of whining here. Every month you’re getting access to new games (for you), continued access to the previous games that you never actually paid for, and (for PS4 users) online access.

In any situation like this there will be times when the games offered really strike a chord with you, and other times when they’re not up your alley — or are ones you already have. C’est la vie.

PS Plus is still a good value for the money… It’s certainly better than “mere” server costs for the PS4, and for PS3 and Vita users, the backlog after a year or more of access to games is pretty incredible.

Why do you guys act like free games are the only thing you get. Have you not noticed all the sales and flash sales this year? There have been massive sales and discounts to make your money back on 1 purchase. If you don’t have money to buy games or you only play the free games, you might have a reason to complain but even then you don’t.

  My eyes are plenty open, that’s why I can say that. My variety of games include everything besides sports and rhythm games. Also “good” is a matter of opinion. And since I like the games I buy, its an awesome deal. Games I buy digitally are either ones I don’t plan on getting rid of (I.e. Destiny, One piece, GTA, or witcher) or digital only.

  And if I want the disc copy, I’ll go there or buy it second hand. I buy games from psn to play on PlayStation platforms. If I wanted a game on steam, I’d hop on my pc and play it there. Like I said I buy digital to keep it or digital only as ps4 is now my primary (not only) platform. I have no problem waiting til a game is 60-70% off 6 or more months later or buy it as soon as it comes out or a random sale. My money is well earned and well spent under my account. Like today, just saved ~$39 with PLUS.

They had very good offers when I picked up thomb rider, tales from borderland, game of thrones and couple more. Other sales wasn’t much discount. And I prefer hard copy because it takes less space than digital not because I like to keep the game. And no need to bullsh’t with keeping thing. U can keep hard copy also. And this particular post is about ps+ monthly offer not other ps+ services. +Main reason I got ps+ was for free games.

  Nah I saved $39. Aka I didn’t pay that $39 compared to the original price. I also got tales and GoT, one of my least favorite genre of games but slightly appealing. And that is a one of the few main reasons I do digital; I’m enticed to trade in if I have a physical copy. I also first got plus when the started it ~5 years ago for the free games, kept it for the deals and the occasional free game that caught my eye.

  Once again. No one asked and cares at how much you buy games. Other places put better sale prices on the games? Meanwhile psn offers sale price with bit higher price with special ps+. Most games (indie games) which has huge discount are even cheaper on steam! Amazon also offers digital version of a game. If u want to talk about ps+ discounts u have to go somewhere else.

  Since when have been able to play games from Steam on PlayStation? No one is talking about any platform beside the 3 here. Amazon had disc versions on sale at the same time as the digital versions on week 1 or 2 of the holiday thing and those prices were worse. When people say Plus sucks and is garbage when they only mean 1/3 of it someone is gonna give them a reason/opinion why the other 2/3 doesn’t.

Also, as a person who only plays a few of the free games since the ps4 came out, I think that Plus is worth it just from the sales. Ps3 reaps the benefits the most because of its huge library compared to the 4.

  You’ve taken umbrage with those who have pointed out what they are dissatisfied with by trying to argue that because you like it, everyone else should to, whereas, i have repeatedly said to others (who do the same as you, and try to pretend, that they’re the sole arbiters of satisfaction, value, and taste) that if they like something, that’s great, however others dont feel the same way and attempt to illustrate why. What I dont do is tell anyone that they are coming across like a “keister fedora” for not agreeing for me.   Actually, I can look at your trophy list to see what you play, anyone can. Fact is fact on what you play based on PlayStation. No one said anything about praising the “Almighty Sony” except for you. Again, you are the only one chastising anyone for an opinion different than yours.   Voice your opinion threw your wallet, its not gonna make a lick a difference if you keep staying a plus member and keep putting those games on your download list. Stop playing the games that are “garbage crap and terrible”. Cancel your membership only to subscribe when some random game you probably do like is free. What I did with Xbox. Their entire first year of GoG was nothing but old old games every already played; cheap games worth less that $5. Heck, even the games they had this year wasn’t great, games anyone that wanted already played or non-indie game nobody knew about

Oh no, you’re getting things for free you didn’t want! WHO CARES? THEY’RE STILL FREE BONUSES.

Big deal. Most of you are paying for the service to play online with people, not for these games. These games are a bonus.

So what, we don’t get 6 AAA titles every month? I like what Sony is doing and giving us games that people have enjoyed, but don’t get a lot of time in the spotlight. About 90% of the games they’ve released have been a lot of fun to play.

I’m new to PS. My friends told me not to leave Xbox because Sony has some very big problems. Now I see the problems: insulting free games & they are locked to an active account.
I’ve already been texted by friends and family laughing at this months PS+ free games! I feel insulted as a new customer and am already second guessing my decision to switch consoles.
***Sony please fix this or I will return my new ps4 for an xbox1!***

Plus subscription ran out over a year ago. I watch every month to see if things will get more enticing. It was awesome the year I had it, then started to trail off and just never came back. But the overall quality of games for PS4 is improving quite a bit IMHO… maybe that will trickle down to Plus and I’ll sign up again. Someday.

Insulting for ps4 players to have such good game on ps3 (DA:O) and awful games on ps4. Ok Grim fandango is good, but it’s an 18 years old game that most people already played. If it’s going to be crappy games every month there is no reason to have a sub.
