As we look forward to the New Year, we’re excited to share our January 2016 PlayStation Plus lineup with everyone. This month our PS4 games pay homage to a couple classic, fan-favorite titles, while updating the gameplay and graphics to PS4!

Hardware: Rivals makes its exclusive debut on PlayStation Plus. Get behind the wheel of a powerful tank or mobile attack jeep in this arcade-style, vehicle combat game. Inspired by the PS2 classic Hardware: Online Arena, Hardware: Rivals lets you challenge your friends or enter the online multiplayer arena on your own and experience epic vehicular mayhem with multiple maps, game modes, and special events.

If you need a breather from all the vehicle-on-vehicle combat, you can always turn to the twisted Mexican folklore of Grim Fandango Remastered. As Manny Calavera, travel agent for the Department of Death, you’ll guide poor souls to their eternal rest. Crime. Skeletons. Romance. You’ll experience it all in this update to the beloved adventure game.

These PS4 games are free for PlayStation Plus members starting on the first Tuesday of January, and you can find the full list of PlayStation Plus games below.

    Man, I can wait for my playstation plus to run out so I can not buy it, genuinely since its become a mandatory thing for multiplayer the free games have become God awful, this is another month wherein it’s just not even worth spending the half an hour that the slow PS4 takes just to open the store to even bother downloading things. Back when I had a PS3 we’d get great stuff to play for free now it’s just trash constantly. There’s no excuses either you could easily throw something like the order 1886 or something like that out for free; or make it so that we can download PS3 games for the 4 because I wouldn’t turn my nose up at dragon age.
    Genuinely appalling; and before anyone says “oh it’s free though” it ain’t, haven’t played online since September so my plus is doing jack right now.
    TL;DR probably won’t bother in future, just the same as I’m considering setting fire to the incredibly underpowered and slow pile of plastic waste console that I wasted money on.

    Waaaaaah my 4$ that I pay every month is not giving me a AAA game.

    My god we have some entitled babies! I think Sony spoiled us with the games they gave out back then. I can see that there’s a difference in quality but it still is a decent lineup of games every month. Do I get disappointed, of course! But I know that I’m still getting way more than my money’s worth no matter what. If it wasn’t for ps plus I would never have thought of buying games like Rocket League or Ollie 2. I can’t wait to try hardware rivals and am looking forward to playing dragon age origins.

    With that said, Sony please throw us a bone next time eh? Some games deserve some online love (Evolve and bf: hardline come to mind) and I’m sure it would help the devs of these games if there was a boost in online population .

      you may pay 4 dollars a month…i pay 50 dollars every year. Period. And i’ll say to you like i said to the other guy. If you dont value the money that you earn and if you freely wanna throw it away for nothing you can send that 4 bucks a month to my paypal account…or if it’s garbage you’re looking for i’ll mail you some trash.     I’m continually disappointed by the lack of japanese games on PS+ for North America, it’s kinda of embarrassing considering that the japanese gaming library is one of Playstations strongest aspects and NA’s Ps+ lineups seem to never give any respect for it

    These games are trash. In fact, amost every month the games are trash. Its the beginning of the year, so it’ll be smart if they actually tried to attract interest in ps plus by having at least one decent game this month. I guess they think otherwise.

    So this is drawing the line between me and Sony. I love my PS3 and my PS4 game collection so far, but this last year was full of garbage discounts and not worthy PS+ offers. I’m paying 49.99$ for a service that offers me, online play ? Wait let me take this back one more time, ONLINE PLAY FOR 49.99$… If that’s the case I will quit playing online and save 50 $ a year on a garbage service and I don’t mean that XBOX LIVE is any better, both services lack the ”je ne sais quoi”, very disappointing as for this month Dragon Age: Origins, like really you couldn’t give us the new title in series for PS3 you had to go back 7 years and give us the old Dragon Age garbage game… you’re greedy and you can suck my duck when the renewal will come knocking on the door.

    Fandango looks garbage and i hate those types of game, oh and it’s not even a PS4 quality of a game, shame you threw it on from the Vita….
    Hardware rivals i’ve played the beta and didn’t like it, seems like a cheaply made game, no wonder it’s going on PS+ on it’s release, because no-one in their right mind would buy that junk.
    So once again a terrible month for PS4 games….Please just make online for free so i don’t need PS+ again, that way i can’t complain about it every month.

    Hey guys, first time commenter. I would just like to say that the system is currently broken. It seems that indie games are the new in. This line up is great if you own a ps3 but for us solo ps4 owners with no backwards compatibility we aren’t getting the best bang for our buck.

    I also understand that the cost of having us pay online has become too expensive for it to be free but don’t forget your slogan “it’s for the players”. Try making me (jk us) happy. I suggest a single AAA game with at least an 85 metacritic score and nothing extra, that way you can afford it and the quality will also be up.

    I won’t mention the competition (double the games) but I will end with one thing, sometimes hard work is disguised as opportunities.

    Dear Sony, I’ve never left any kind of comment before, it’s normally not really my thing. I felt like I needed to mention that I dropped XBOX after 9 years of being a loyal customer for the PS4. Part of the reason I switched my home console was the offering of games made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers of the PS3 generation. I figured these great benefits would only continue for the PS4, especially since its been advertised that Plus subscribers would get access to regular AAA games. Over the past year I’ve stayed silent with the lackluster Plus offerings only because I’m mostly a multiplayer shooter fan, and anything else extra I get is just that EXTRA. BUT, I do feel like since Sony is currently winning the home console battle, us paying subscribers are getting the short end of the stick. Aside from mostly stable multiplayer, and sort-of discounts on games, the instant game collection for ,ps4 specifically, this year has been 85% disappointing. Please listen to your biggest fans Sony, they are keeping PlayStation at the top of the market. I know I’m a relatively new customer, but I’m a loyal customer, and I’m hopeful that 2016 Will be the best year for PlayStation and PS Plus yet!

    Really Sony? Not worth the space on my hard drive! At least Microsoft are giving away some half decent games….put your hand in your pocket and offer something worth downloading. We are after all paying you £40 a year….don’t seem worth it at the moment because I’m getting nothing for my money it seems like. Sort it out.

    come on Sony I don’t understand why you will not give us $20 to $60 games when I pay 5 dollars a month. We should be getting Call of Duty Black ops 3 and SW Battlefront. These games are trash. I am going to quit and buy a xbone and get there 2 crappy games. The community deserves $60 dollar games. I speak for the community.

      I’ve got an Xbox One too and this months game was Thief (not the greatest game in the world but better than this nonsense!) And I got Colin McRae rally too. PlayStation are starting the year off on a bad note.

      Thief was given earlier this year and that isn’t even a great game. Xbone has terrible games for the first part of the year and okay games for the second half to entice people. Their gog was lacking the entire year

    As a new ps4 player as of Christmas , im pretty dissatisfied with the games this coming month. While I understand and appreciate the love for grim fandango, I dont see this as competition with your rivals microsoft, who clearly have more to offer. Im hoping by March you can convince me otherwise, or I dont see myself renewing my membership.

    So again I have a mixed view of the month. Grim Fandango is worth this month alone. This is the last game I bought on launch day. All others I tend to wait for some form of sale, even if it is dropping $10 off somewhere. AAA games generally aren’t worth launch price to me, especially with the $10+ they like to bill us Canadians.

    The rest I am mixed on. DAO I will likely play at a later date and I am glad for nihilumbra and that I didn’t buy it yesterday. The others are either meh or pass, though I might try Hardware.

    For those complaining on behalf of the new buyers at Christmas, most of them got plus to play either Battlefront or BO3 so they didn’t buy plus for the games, they got it for the online. I like a wide variety of games and have enjoyed the classic style adventures games of late (though the KQ deal annoyed me as well). I get more than enough free games that interest me from various genres over the year to justify my plus subscription and the extra discounts pay for it several times over as well, even just over the holiday sale.

    I really do wish they would take out the comment of wanting our feedback though. The only time they acknowledge it is when it is praiseworthy. While there is a lot of generalized and entitled whining that goes on in the comments section, there is also a lot of solid thoughtful constructive criticism that gets ignored in the wake of the rants. It would be nice to see some acknowledgement of that as well sometime.

    I wouldn’t be excited to present that line up. Dragon Age Origins is amazing but it came out in 2009. That’s 6 years people had time to buy and play, which most probably have. I don’t expect AAA games or brand new games. I’d be happy with just one game a month that I download (Freedom Wars this month, as I had already purchased Gauntlet) Its just a bummer that majority of months give me nothing new to play. At least the PS+ deals are nice. Inquisition for 24$ was great, I had lent the game to a friend who lost it, so it was great to have the game with dlc for less than what the dlc itself cost. Nuclear Throne would be a perfect game for plus (even though I already bought it.) I’m rambling, but you get the picture.

      You can get better deals than playstation plus deals for free with no subscripton on the pc on a regular basis, 80% off with no subscription verus 75% off with subscription, how is this worthwhile anymore?

    well I have had PlayStation plus since it first came out and all you received was some discounts and , i think it was one mini game per month plus early demos (field-runners was a fun game by the way ). So although now is much better than back then it still pales in comparison to what we received before PS4 came out and started the mandatory online subscription. This was to be expected early on and the indie games they brought to the system then I thought were well done, but at this point in the life cycle you have to wonder if because of the install base over Microsoft that they are riding their lead with complacency. Microsofts games with gold offers seem much better right now especially if you dont own all 3 PlayStation systems. I think Sony should at least offer a half price subscription for online play only for gamers that have no interest in indie releases.

    People crack me up. For less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks for PS+ per month. People expect to play online and have AAA games given to them every month. I love to play online and gladly pay the few dollars per month to do so. To me these are free games Sony is giving me. There are quite a few games I would have never considered but ended up loving because I got them through PS+. Is there room for improvement? Yes, but to talk like you are getting screwed by Sony is overreacting if you ask me.

      You did not need Ps+ to play multiplayer on the PS3 so I think we expected a little bit more from Sony with the new requirement of PS+ for Multiplayer on the Ps4. I guess there is no reason for people who don’t particularly play multiplayer games to have PS+.

      Welmosca, what exactly is your argument? Like I said you are paying for the service to get these games, therefore not free. The indie vs. AAA argument is such a tired one. Yes, some of the games are good. I have enjoyed Rocket League, Resogun, Transistor, etc. thru Plus. That does not take away from the fact that the value of Plus without the AAA titles has greatly diminished.

      pretty much..and that was like a year ago..but again, to me it’s not just about the shovel ware, it’s the sales and discounts and the fact that even with most of their discounts and sales, these games happen to be more expensive than their retail counter-parts and that’s ridiculous. EVERYTHING about PS+ kinda sucks at this point. Why do I have to pay 50 dollars for online play? Since, it’s clearly not about the games at this point, why exactly are you charging me to play multiplayer online?

      I love the boot lickers though, their happy for anything. When Sony turns around and says, hey guys we decided to up the price to 100 dollars a year and no more free games and occasionally we’ll give you a 10 percent discount off a game from 3 years ago that we normally sell for $59.99…these muppets will say…”WOW SONY, thx SONY…I cant believe it, I’ve been waiting for this. You guys are the best. SONY forever…forget the whiners..how dare they complain.babies…complainers, ungrateful dummies…SONY all day, what!!!”

    The Problem is all of you including me are still paying for plus, we need to make a stand and stop paying it, mine runs out in Feb I will not be renewing until they give some better games out, games with gold also keep their games with out a subscription we only have rentals the PS plus is a joke.

    sony should do this put up a list of 5 games for ps4 5 games for ps3 and 5 games for ps vita that you can pick for youre self
    ps4 ps3 ps vita
    game 1 game 1 game 1
    game 2 game 2 game 2
    game 3 game 3 game 3
    game 4 game 4 game 4
    game 5 game 5 game 5

    so lets so ill pick games 2 and 5 for ps4 then ps3 games 1 and 4 then ps vita games 3 and 5
    now the other games that i never picked are locked out thats my free games for this month
    now some other players may have picked dif games that i have picked
    this way if you have a game from the list of games you can always pick a game you dont have from the list of games that sony put up

    but this is up to sony xD

    Extremely lackluster, i get that the PS4 library isn’t that big yet and they don’t want to give us free games that we would actually want (since by that logic we’re more willing to pay for them anyways) but there are plenty of options that would be better than all the indie casual gamer B$, if its gonna be all indies I want to at least vote for each month, though i suppose there are agreements both sides have to make.

    But stop trying to make it sound like we want these games, it’s like they’re giving us free stuff reluctantly , should have realized we would actually want good games.

    It has not been all bad but the last 4 or so months, pretty terrible I’d say so.

    The PS4 is over two years old and we still don’t get AAA titles from PS+. When my subscription expires I will not renew since there no longer is any value to it. I am losing confidence in Sony to satisfy me as a consumer by the day.

      Well said though they did have some good games in the early part of last year like justice league…but the past 6 months have been terrible. Xbox live on the other hand has been month after money amazing. Sony you suck.

    As usual a terrible set of games on PS Plus. Hey Sony, get a clue, have a look at what Xbox is offering and know you need to improve. These remastered games and boring platformers are horrible. Crap. Crap. Crap.

    I gotta agree with a lot of people on here. Nothing in the last few months I would play. Lets see some some good games.

    Here’s a concept Sony, free of charge. People with PS+ start getting free PS2 games as you bring them into backwards compatability. God of War, FF7, Twisted Metal series, etc. Lets start getting some of the big hits from PS2 days for free as well. Then you will be competing with XBOX1 and giving those games away. Everyone without PS+ can pay the ridiculous charge of $10 a game or whatever you will charge, but just make the whole collection free for PS+ or something. That would really stir the pot and give your customers a BIG reason to stick with you.

    Whatever you do…don’t even bother with Feb games if they are going to be this terrible. Just say, “Sorry, we’ve given members all the games that were good, so this month, you get your pick of ANY game that’s been free on PS+ before!”

    That would be 10x better than January.

      The problem with PSPlus is that it rewards the casual consumer more than the person who buys a lot of games. If you are a heavy gamer, 7 to 9 times out of 10, when something good comes up, it’s a game you already purchased.

      I don’t want to complain too much because the discounts on Flash sales make it a value to me but there are definitely flaws.

      The other issue is that PS3 offerings are almost always better than PS4 which I’d assume encourages the more casual gamer to continue holding off on upgrading to the PS4. If they supported the PS3 less or even cut it out of PSPlus, more resources could go towards today’s games.

    The cynical view is that Sony is smashing the console race by so much that they are now coasting with their ps plus offering. It’s a bad mentality to have towards your customers if true.

    Why hasn’t Knack or Killzone been on the list yet? Initially I thought this was purely because the PS4 was so new and it was difficult to offer those games for ‘free’ yet. The problem is that it has been far too long for that to be the case now. Sony has to really try and do better here. Every customer who owns a PS4 and doesn’t have PS Plus should be considered lost business, there needs to be a bigger attachment rate. To do that, you have to make the lineup each month better, particularly for PS4.

    These games SHOULD be on PS Plus in 2016:

    Knack – Why this wasn’t given in Dec2015/Jan2016 I’ll never understand. A kids game around Christmas that would get parents to buy ps plus subscriptions. Lost opportunity.
    Killzone – launch title, should be 1st half of year
    Infamous: Second Son – the expansion has been on PS Plus, the base game should as well during 2nd half of year
    Destiny (base game) – The 2 expansions cost $60+, why isn’t Bungie/Sony trying to increase their player pool by giving the base game away for free to begin with?

      very solid reasoning. very good points. Now, of course the SHEEPLE and the automatons wont agree, let’s be honest, they never do, We have to be grateful and humble, dont post anything unless it’s praise worthy….but i believe those were wonderful critiques and suggestions

      Sony is gonna put knack and infamous at some point, only makes sense base on the past igc but killzone would be a maybe. Only thing stopping the Destiny part is a little more greedy company named Activision.

    Are you guys at Sony read the posts or even notice the ratings when you announce the games every month.
    The games offered, which are regularly bad these days, are even worse for this month.

    Perhaps it’s time to drop PS3 titles from PSPlus. Not from a selfish standpoint because I get my PS+ value from discounts but I have to wonder if keeping the PS3 attractive keeps people from making the jump to the PS4. PSPlus for PS3 is consistently better than PS4 offerings. Maybe if Sony started slow wing down support for the PS3, more resources could be allocated to modern times.
