Hello everyone. As we continue our celebration of the PlayStation 20th anniversary, we want to take a look back at the heritage that helped propel us to the brand that we are today. PlayStation 2 holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers who have fond memories of playing some of the biggest franchises in gaming.

PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time, thanks in part to the revolutionary tech built into the box, such as support for the DVD format for games and movies, a powerful graphics processor, and specialized chips for particle effects and physics. Above and beyond the technical innovations that made PS2 stand apart is the huge catalog of amazing and much loved games, such as Dark Cloud, Twisted Metal: Black, and the PS2-era classic Grand Theft Auto games, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, just to name a few.

To celebrate our PS2 heritage, I’m excited to announce that starting tomorrow, you will be able to purchase and play PS2 games on your PS4 via PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe.

We are getting things started with a bang by launching with eight fan favorites tomorrow:

Having these titles available on PS4 is already incredibly exciting for us, but we did not stop there. We have brought these titles forward to meet today’s gaming standards by adding Trophy support! Each title’s Trophy set has been carefully developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.

Also, you will be able to experience all of these PS2 games like never before — in up-rendered 1080p with the features you expect from a PS4 game including Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App.

      “Final Fantasy PS2 Games”

      This confuses me a little. FFX and FFX-2 are already on PS4 with HD remasters, trophies, kind of pointless to ask for those. FF12 is expected to get the same treatment and be announced at PSX for Vita and PS4. Not much point in asking for FF11 I don’t even think square supports it with new expansions anymore.

      So that pretty much leaves what, FFVII Dirge of Cerberus?

      I’ll admit I’ll take Dirge of Cerberus, but unless you ask for it specifically I don’t think they’ll give it to us.

      ZoE. also go tan HD Remaster on PS3 along with MGS 2 and 3. PRobably pointless to even ask for those. I know I won’t rebuy them.

      Odin Sphere also got a remaster coming to PS4.

      So good list over all, but we have to ask just what is sony going to focus on for these Emulated titles. I’m concerned this program won’t bare much in the way of fruit.

      What if some don’t want to buy those remastered? It’s good to have options.

      Was not aware Odin Sphere was being made for PS4, so thanks for the heads up on that.

      They still support FF11 with fixing bugs and events, but yeah. They don’t release any new content for 11.

      It’s still early, will have to wait and see how it evolves over time. I was hoping they would add disc-emulation for PS2 games you already own.

    “Starwars Battlefront”, had awesome multiplayer online…”Greatest Hits” on ps2 very easy to get playing and nearly perfect gameplay control.

      What they are offering is paid backwards compatibility. They may even offer you the chance to buy the PS2 classics you bought on PS3 again.

      This isn’t even backward compatibility.

      Backward Compatibility implies compatibility with the original software. In otherwords discs and PS2 classics. I’m cool with rebuying so long as I get the features outlined, but I’d like a choice of which titles I’m rebuying and the rest to simply get the basic compatibility features.

      In other words Disc Based Backward Compatibility (the part you got right).

    Please work out something for those of us who bought the digital PS1 / PS2 Classics games on PS3. I have over 60 titles of them. Having to buy them again on PS4 would be a real shame.

    I hope that we would at least be able to access them on PS4 without the extra features on this new emulation system. Also, please consider allowing playing the disc games in future BC plans. Having access to your entire library on one machine is what makes Steam a very attractive platform for gaming. I hope Sony would consider having this luxury on PSN.

    1) Trophy Support for downloads – WIN!
    2) Remote Play – WIN!
    3) Streaming – WIN!
    4) Up resolution – WIN!
    5) On PS4 – WIN!
    6) Able to play PS2 Discs and Cross Buy for PS2 classics (or an upgrade fee, lets be fair here trophies is an added cost) – FAIL

    I like the direction, but please find a way to make 6 work. I would like to play PS2 games that aren’t avialable yet.

    Also what guaranty do we have that these games will on PS5 and PSP3?

    Sony, I know that the PS4 was not meant to be backwards compatible and that the architecture is totally different, but I REALLY hope that at some point we can use the discs that we already own, in addition to what we already bought from PS1/PS2 Classics from the Playstation Store. I’ll be honest, I still have my PS2 hooked up and know that I can use it for my PS1/PS2 discs, but I don’t have enough space in my entertainment center anymore (I’m still beating myself up for getting rid of my 60GB BC PS3 for a slim one for an “upgrade” through your customer service support over the phone). I’m sorry, but spending $14.99 on a game that I already own or can buy for cheaper online is a bit much and not fair. I’m sure you have amazing engineers that can develop some kind of emulation software that can allow discs to be used on PS4. Even if you guys can’t do it, other than this up-rendered thing you have going, there just has to be another alternative to allow us to use our PS1/PS2 discs, heck, even the Classics that we bought from the Playstation Store.

    I hope you listen to us because I know you can deliver. Maybe not completely, but at least something :)

    Love that we get to play classics in our modern consoles. And with trophies to boot! But I feel $15 is too much for these PS2 classics. Sure, the effort to port and update these games must be big, but you could cover the costs of the emulator development with sales volume.

    SOCOM II please…

    This has to happen with online functionality. Look at Hhour right now. So many people supported Hhour for a while just because they saw David Sears on the project (because they loved Socom II and he was a huge part of Socom IIs success).

    Its been the most requested game remake on the forums countless times. It’s gotta be a nobrainer.

    The price is too high. Please give these games as plus games instead of all the bad games and glorified demos like king quest ep 1 that you usually give out.

    also you better give ps1 classics on ps4 straight up after twisting ps2 games into this scheme.

    I would like to add my support to those calling for the ability to play disc-based PS2 games. While I think it’s fine that Sony wants to resell these games with the enhancements and that people who don’t or no longer have the discs want to buy them, I think it would still be great to have an emulator app for those of us that do have the discs. I have 106 PS2 games on display approximately 15 feet to my left as I type this that I do cherish and do play. However, they don’t always hold up well on my LCD screen despite using the PS2’s component cables. I would truly love to be able to play them with the PS4’s upscaling, but I’m never going to re-buy those games. As such, this approach will make $0 from me and those with similar dispositions (however many or few we might be).

      Therefore, if Sony also sold the PS2 emulator as a PS4 app (for, let’s say, ~$20), then it would still be able to profit from me and company, while still offering the piecemeal options that others seem to be excited about. If stable emulators have existed on x86 architecture for the PS2 for however many years, as many on the internet aver, and Sony was able to develop an emulator for the 80GB PS3s, I can’t imagine that Sony can’t accomplish the same on the PS4’s mainstream (if somewhat customized) hardware.

      At any rate, I think there’s additional money for Sony to make by also offering a PS2/PS1 emulator app for the PS4 (as well as a fair amount of consumer goodwill). Please make it happen.

      The thing someone at SOny has failed to think about is that not every video game fan has a large PS1/2 disc collection, and even among those who, some would find downloadable titles more convenient – allowing for discs and digital classics are “gateway drugs” leading to more purchases. Asking people to repay for something they’ve already bought acts instead as detriments to downloading more.

      I can play my PS1/2 games just fine on my PC, but a compelling offering on PS4 is far more convenient and attractive to me.

    The .Hack Series (The original game tetrology of Infection/Mutation/OutBreak/Quarantine and the .Hack//G.U. Trilogy of Rebirth/Reminisce/Redemption) by Cyberconnect2 and Namco Bandai I’d love to see finally be available on the PSN. I’m a big fan of the .Hack Franchise, to the point my copies of the content are beginning to have trouble playing, and replacements are going for ludicrous prices (well over twice their original retail price at this point); so I would love to have digital copies of, Trophy support or no, and Immediately purchase them the instant they would go up if they were to be placed on it.

    Also, it’d be great if you could make it so we could insert a PS2 disc and have the PS4 ‘install’ it to the HDD in the PS2 ‘wrapper’.

    I heard that Sony is for the gamers but all I have seen since buying my PS4 is that the PS plus games are lackluster here lately (used to be better in 2013 and part of 2014) and you get nickeled and dimed to death regardless of the support to a brand. I own a PSP, Vita, PS1, PS2, PS3 and a PS4. I have to say that I feel like the PS4 is the biggest disappointment so far. Please Sony if you say you are for the gamers then prove it, show us that you appreciate our business and at least listen to the suggestions and opinions and let us know you care. Perhaps your new slogan should be #ForTheGreed!

      You need to realize that PlayStation Plus is to play online and the games they give us each month is a bonus. Stop being greedy yourself and appreciate what they give us to play for FREE! There’s always a game each month I would never have bought with my own money and after playing it I appreciate what they have given me. Your money for PS Plus is to keep the servers running both playing ONLINE and also to keep our Game Saves backed up so we never loose a game save and have the ability to download to another console to play at a friends house. If you have a PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 why do you need older games on the PS4. I think you and everyone need to focus on the Future of games. My rant is done :D

    My personal opinion about all these remasters and remakes for PS4.

    I think you just need to add the entire library of PlayStation Originals from PS1, PS2, PS3 game to PlayStation Now and turn PlayStation Now into a subscription service where you pay so much for 1 month, 2 months 3 months 6 months or 1 year to play with unlimited access to the entire PlayStation Now library of PlayStation 1, 2 & 3 games for as long as you want but at a reasonable cost. If the cost is low enough allot of gamers would pay to play older games on there PS4.

    But everyone has there own opinion about the service.

    I prefer to play the best version of the current game such as Racket & Clank. I prefer to play the HD Remastered version that came out on PS3 not the original version that came out on PS2. No need to see different copies of the same game when we prefer the better version.

    because let’s face it PC can run PSX and PS2 games via disk why the PS4 can’t?
