Hello everyone. As we continue our celebration of the PlayStation 20th anniversary, we want to take a look back at the heritage that helped propel us to the brand that we are today. PlayStation 2 holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers who have fond memories of playing some of the biggest franchises in gaming.

PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time, thanks in part to the revolutionary tech built into the box, such as support for the DVD format for games and movies, a powerful graphics processor, and specialized chips for particle effects and physics. Above and beyond the technical innovations that made PS2 stand apart is the huge catalog of amazing and much loved games, such as Dark Cloud, Twisted Metal: Black, and the PS2-era classic Grand Theft Auto games, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, just to name a few.

Fan-Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

To celebrate our PS2 heritage, I’m excited to announce that starting tomorrow, you will be able to purchase and play PS2 games on your PS4 via PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe.

We are getting things started with a bang by launching with eight fan favorites tomorrow:

  • Dark Cloud — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
  • Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
  • The Mark of Kri — $14.99
  • Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
  • War of the Monsters — $9.99

Having these titles available on PS4 is already incredibly exciting for us, but we did not stop there. We have brought these titles forward to meet today’s gaming standards by adding Trophy support! Each title’s Trophy set has been carefully developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.

Also, you will be able to experience all of these PS2 games like never before — in up-rendered 1080p with the features you expect from a PS4 game including Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App.

And if you’re attending PlayStation Experience in San Francisco this weekend, you’ll be able to play these PS2 games on PS4 at the show floor:

    I really want disc support. At least allow people that have the legit disc get the digital one for free, or at least a discount!

    I already own Rogue Galaxy for example.

    Mercenaries 1! Was and still is my favourite sandbox game to this day, the second didn’t even measure up to the first at all. I’ll buy it day one if it’s released for $15 or even $20!

    I don’t want to pay for games I already own. Up rendering a game does not warrant a 15 dollar price tag. I’m sure they’re are plenty of idiots that will shell out for this. Great for you, bad for consumers.

      Just because you are cheap doesn’t mean that these game aren’t worth 15 a piece. With what they have added these games are easily worth what they are asking. I’m sorry 15 bucks breaks your bank account, such a pity.

    Did you say TROPHY SUPPORT !!!! ?????

    I love the idea, even if you need an online connection and Plus to upload it to the profile ID.
    (Maybe you could think about making an app in the future for easy wi-fi transfer, should worldly problems arise) Vita included of course.

    It can make the game more interesting with additional challenges, can make me smile, when I get to hear and see the notifications, and finally distinguish my gaming history.

    -Now, when can this be done for some of the bigger PS1 titles?

    Sony this is an intervention! You have lost your way – again! You seem to assume that your advantages in marketshare over competition and your successful marketing wil make you invincible. I am here to say think about it a bit more. You have made many Vita owners a bit unsatisfied with the way you have handed a nice little piece of hardware. And don’t get me started with PSTV. I do understand the difficulties over PS3 backwards compatibility on PS4. But… Charging 14.99 for PS2 games that I already owned if I want to have the privilege of playing in the latest console??? SERIOUSLY?! I bet ps one classics will follow lead. I have a PS2, PSP, PS3, PSV and a PS4 here with me. Lots of games in boxes with a PlayStation logo. Too many others under that unified account system that is not that unified since it can not read my purchases from a newer console. I am I supposed to trust you next with PS VR??? I don’t think so. Let’s see how many times we hear PS4 is the best place for gamers in the upcoming conference.

      Too late, I already have them -on discs!!! Listen, not about to start anything with anyone, I am happy with whatever you buy for yourself but this is not a good business practice. It is very anti-consumer too. Unless every single one of those 30 millions who bought a PS4 is a blind devote fan of whatever PlayStation does this will come to bite their ass.

    This is BullS***. I don’t want to pay another $15 (for now) to be able to play games I already own. 1.) I don’t care about trophies, I care about playing games. 2. ) It’s only a matter of time before they change the price so you pay a premium for the more popular games (Shadow of the Colossus? ICO?) I bought a PS4 at launch and only still own 7 games for it. This is yet another reason why my PS4 has been collecting dust. Come on Sony!!! Just give the people what they want.

      I am with you. I cannot understand how we see post of fellow users asking happily for this or that game instead of raising in arms to push for what is fair. Next generation be prepared to buy all of it again – or rent it courtesy of PSNOW! We get what we deserve.

    Why don’t you make a patch so that for people like myself who own ALL of the mentioned games (luckily) to insert the DVD on the PS4 and then download a patch to play and we are only able to play if the game is inserted on the PS4 (to prevent guys who don’t have it to play) because i seriously will NOT pay 45$ or 30£ to play 3 GTA games that i own, that i bought when they came out!

      I for one am hoping it will…….eventually……since I am still waiting for greatness.

      Sony talked me into it, once I found out that the Vita mostly backwards compatible on a mobile device, I could easily fit in a backpack.

      Problem is, I still need a 128+ GB memory card that doesn’t cost a fortune, and titles that need to be added.

      Like Never Alone, Mark of the Ninja, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Dust, and many more that could have been already.

      I cannot believe people are suggesting games at all! I am no one to tell anybody what to do with their money but hey… This cycle of buy it now and buy it again next generation (or rent it from PSNOW) is not gonna stop unless we do something about it. It is 2015!! If there is a way to play my previously purchased old games on my also purchased console, I think I have the right to ask for it, at the very least for a massive discount. And trophy support is not a valid excuse charge me 15 dollars again. Make things fair and you will see more money, keep it like this and only only unconditional users will remain.

      It is not only trophy support. Try plugging your old consoles up to an HDTV and see what they look like. Plus you can stream and shareplay. Maybe you do not use these features but I do.

    I have just one question…why exactly is it that a budget PC from 2007, that have not one bit of tech from a ps2 in them, can play all these disc based PS2 games in 1080p resolution at 60fps and the ps4 can’t even emulate the discs in their original form?

    I’m sorry but if a couple dudes working on a program in their spare time can accomplish that then a multi billion dollar company like Sony has no excuse to not let us use our discs. It is a straight up money grab not to mention many of the lesser known titles will never see the light of day on psn.

    The fact is the ps4 is designed like a pc if they can’t get disc based ps2 emulation working on their own machine when they have all the schematics the tech and everything else they could possibly need to do so then I think its time to stop supporting them….there is zero reason other than a money grab to make us pay for games we already own.

    Its bad enough I had to swear off ever buying anything from sony but their main consoles now cause they never support anything once they get your money (i.e Move and Vita) I assume PSVR will be no different.
