Hello everyone. As we continue our celebration of the PlayStation 20th anniversary, we want to take a look back at the heritage that helped propel us to the brand that we are today. PlayStation 2 holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers who have fond memories of playing some of the biggest franchises in gaming.
PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time, thanks in part to the revolutionary tech built into the box, such as support for the DVD format for games and movies, a powerful graphics processor, and specialized chips for particle effects and physics. Above and beyond the technical innovations that made PS2 stand apart is the huge catalog of amazing and much loved games, such as Dark Cloud, Twisted Metal: Black, and the PS2-era classic Grand Theft Auto games, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, just to name a few.

To celebrate our PS2 heritage, I’m excited to announce that starting tomorrow, you will be able to purchase and play PS2 games on your PS4 via PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe.
We are getting things started with a bang by launching with eight fan favorites tomorrow:
- Dark Cloud — $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
- Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
- The Mark of Kri — $14.99
- Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
- War of the Monsters — $9.99
Having these titles available on PS4 is already incredibly exciting for us, but we did not stop there. We have brought these titles forward to meet today’s gaming standards by adding Trophy support! Each title’s Trophy set has been carefully developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.
Also, you will be able to experience all of these PS2 games like never before — in up-rendered 1080p with the features you expect from a PS4 game including Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App.
And if you’re attending PlayStation Experience in San Francisco this weekend, you’ll be able to play these PS2 games on PS4 at the show floor:
- Dark Cloud
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
- PaRappa the Rapper 2 (coming soon)
- Rogue Galaxy
- The King of Fighters 2000 (coming soon)
- The Mark of Kri
- War of the Monsters
We will be working tirelessly to bring you your favorite PS2 games with new releases on a regular basis, and we hope you love playing PS2 games on PS4 as much as we did making them! So tell us, what PS2 games do you want to play on your PS4?
Long live PlayStation!

I also I forgot to read it says PS2 classics and PS2 formatted Discs are incompatible with PS4. No way to change that disc part huh?
And now about the PS2 games I would like to have on my PS4:
– Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City & San Andreas – we already have them promised, so thanks for that.
– Grand Theft Auto LCS and VCS – these are not announced, so I would like to have a chance to finish them after all.
– Need for Speed: Underground – first of all, I’m dying to play it on PS4, one of my all time favorites, really hoping to see this one in the next announcement list.
– Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Need for Speed: Underground 2 (It’d be nice to see them too)
– Gran Turismo 3, 4
– Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 (No explanation needed)
– Resident Evil 4
– God of War 1,2.
– Black
– Killzone
– Shadow of the Colossus
– Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven
– Spider-Man: The Movie
This is pretty much all I can remember, of course some of them are not popular at all, so they will never be presented, but I wish.. :)
I would love to see one game to get ported. And that’s socom 2. With me being into shooter games non has come close to socom.
Please sony surprise one of your oldest online shooter fan base
And I was hoping to use my PS2 discs again…
Well, I wish to play SamuraI Warriors 2, Onimusha Dswn of dreams, Dynasty Warriors 5, Resident evil outbreak 1 and 2…
I already own half a dozen of these games from when they originally came out, so unless you’re giving me the option to pop those discs in and play them as opposed to weeding away the good will you’ve built since the PS4’s launch by nickel and diming veteran PS fans, you can keep these. Charging people for backwards compatibility on 2 generation old games while the competition is offering it for free with their last generation games is the height of arrogance.
Socom is coming next, I hope.
What about Final Fantasy XII? please!!
Please bring budokai tenkaichi 3 back!!!!!!! We all want it and this is the perfect opportunity to do so! #DBZcommunity
PLZ GIVE US STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT 2 & DRAGON BALL Z BUDOKAI TENKAICHI 3

I was afraid you were going to do this. But it’s Shuhei Yoshida. The hack who doesn’t know how to run a company. What PS2 games would I like to own on PS4? THE ONES I ALREADY OWN. Not the one’s you would be forcing me re-purchase but you’re too stupid and greedy to make this possible . You may have missed the point of BC Yoshida, so I’ll explain it to you.
Backwards compatibility only counts if you allow your current system to play your old discs. Not just re-hash the same old games and expect people to buy them. But that’s you’re good for aren’t you Yoshida? All you’ve been doing is repackaging old games and then reselling them and calling them “remasters”. This would’ve been fantastic if you added PS2 disc emulation. Going in this direction only serves to screw your customers. You can keep your PS2 fan favorites crap. Not supporting this BS. Stop treating your customers like morons. You’re a hack.

Do you have any plans too release ape escape 2 and 3 as well as dark cloud 2?
dec. 2015, the date ps4 will live in infamy.. all that good will erased.. so much for pulling a microsoft
so wait, I bought gta san andreas first on disc that won’t work on ps4, then I bought the digital version just yesterday on ps3, will that atleast carry over as a cross buy? are you kidding sony, Why would you not put up san andreas on both ps3 and ps4 on the same day? so did I just waste 15$ by getting it on ps3 just yesterday.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I’m worried about it not being crossbuy, and also I don’t wanna buy vice city on ps4 if it’s worse quality than the ps3 version. I’ll have to wait and see
