The Full Story Behind Nier: Automata on PS4

Earlier in the year at E3, we unveiled a brand new game in the Nier franchise coming exclusively to PS4 in 2016. Today, we’re proud to unveil not only the official title of the game but also first ever gameplay footage!

NieR: Automata

I’m sure you guys have lots of questions about Nier: Automata, so let’s get you all up to speed.

What is Nier: Automata?

The original Nier is a very unique action RPG that struck a chord with many passionate gamers when it came out five years ago. The story revolves around the main protagonist Nier as he searches for a cure for his daughter who is infected with the Black Scrawl virus, a seemingly incurable disease.

To this day, gamers around the world still talk about Nier fondly and the soundtrack and design book are still selling so there’s clearly something special about it. If you haven’t played the original Nier, do try and track down a copy because it has one of the most memorable and emotional casts, stories, and music in recent memory.

The Full Story Behind Nier: Automata on PS4

Nier: Automata is the next game in the Nier franchise and it’s a collaboration between Square Enix and PlatinumGames. You probably recognize PlatinumGames’ distinct action style in the gameplay trailer but if you look closely, you’ll be able to spot gameplay elements from the original Nier as well. It’s still an action RPG so don’t worry if you want more RPG mechanics in the game, they’re still there!

What is the story in Nier: Automata?

Earth has suddenly been invaded by beings from another planet and mechanical life forms with overwhelming power were used as weapons of war which forced mankind to flee to the moon. In order to take back the earth, a resistance force of android warriors has been created by humanity to fight these invaders.

The world that you see in Nier: Automata is one where androids and mechanized weapons clash in ferocious combat in a barren and deserted wasteland. It’s set after the original game but the story is written in a way which means you don’t have to have played the first one.

NieR: Automata

The world/universe is still linked between the two Nier games though so if you have played the original, you will no doubt recognize some of the locations and characters who may or may not be returning. The locations in particular will look different as they’re now more like ruins after the alien invasion but there will also be areas where you get the sense of a very advanced civilization.

Most of the story is still shrouded in mystery though so there’s more to look out for and discover further down the line.

Who is the female character in the gameplay trailer?

She’s not actually female, or maybe it’s more accurate to say she’s not actually human. Her name or serial number is 2B and she’s an android. In the world of Nier, there are strict rules meaning this kind of android is not allowed to have emotions. However, each different model has its own quirks and characteristics and 2B has a comparatively cold and level headed personality.

Keen fans and eagle-eyed readers might have noticed that at the end of the E3 announcement trailer there were three words that popped up — “doll,” “human,” and “machine” so there were hints from the start…

Who is behind Nier: Automata?

Fans of the original Nier will be happy to know that all of the key members of the creative team are back for Nier: Automata! Below is a quick rundown of who is who on the team.

Yoko Taro (Creative Director) & Yosuke Saito (Producer)
I don’t think it would be a proper Nier game if Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito weren’t involved! They are the original duo behind the first Nier game.

Keiichi Okabe (Composer)

Keiichi Okabe was the composer of the first Nier and the music is such an integral part to the game. It really helped shape and form the games identity so it was really important to the team to get Keiichi Okabe on board for Nier: Automata.

Akihiko Yoshida (Character Designer)
Akihiko Yoshida has worked on many monumental Square Enix games like Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vagrant Story among others.

Yosuke Saito actually suggested Akihiko Yoshida as the character designer for Nier: Automata as a crazy idea as expected him to say no and turn the idea down. Yoko Taro is also a big fan of his work and as luck would have it, the CEO of the company that Mr. Yoshida is affiliated with is a hardcore Nier fan so this really helped getting him on board with Nier: Automata!

PlatinumGames (Developer)

Of course, I should give a special mention to the team at PlatinumGames who are developing the game! You’re probably already aware of who they are but they’re the developers behind incredible games such as Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Yoko Taro describes them as “really young, talented hotshots” and when it comes to action gameplay, they are world class, so it’s super exciting to see their contributions to the gameplay.

Yoko Taro also moved to Osaka for this project and practically lives in the PlatinumGames studio which is about 400km away from his actual home. It’s all for the greatness that is Nier: Automata though!

So that is a brief introduction to Nier: Automata! I hope you guys like what you’ve seen so far. There’s plenty more to show and talk about the game so do keep an eye out for future updates. If you’ve got any questions, I’ll be sure to try my best to answer them in the comments.

  • Finally something i can add to my wish list.

  • Man, I am super psyched for this game to release. NieR is in the top 3 of my all-time favorite games, enough to make me platinum it! For me, the NieR: New Project reveal at E3 was the best news I’d ever heard right next to FFVII full-remake announcement since it seemed like not many people knew of NieR. I was totally blown away by the surprise news that I was dancing and jumping everywhere. Thank you Square-Enix, Cavia, and Platinum Games for making this possible. Loved the game so much, I made a presentation on it for my game design class. :)

    COLLECTOR’S EDITIONS PLEASE.

  • To me, this was Square Enix’s biggest surprise at E3 2015. Can’t wait to get Nier Automata and Final Fantasy XV in 2016. Glad you guys are still supporting niche title like this, it shows that you really care about these kinds of games. Please do more stuff like this in the future. Thanks a lot for the game and good luck with development.

    • I personally think it’s important and healthy for a company to release a good variety of games and I’d like to think that Square Enix believes this too. If we’re able to keep releasing lots of different games, niche and big budget I’d like to think we will :)

  • It kind of looks like a re-skinned Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance … not that’s necessarily a bad thing.
I should probably get around to finishing the first game. I stopped playing when the last remaining side quest required me to plant seeds, turn off the game, turn my PS3 clock forward, load the game, harvest flowers, then repeat again and again.

  • I did catch the 3 words written in Japanese with the celestial letters. Thank you for bringing us the next NieR game, I’m looking forward to it. I love what I see and hear so far!

  • Will Emi Evans the vocalist of the first NIER sing the songs of this game too?
Please say yes i would be incredibly sad if not TT___TT

    • This could be a deal-breaker for me if she’s not involved… (Probably not really, but… I figure threats might help. lol)

    • Oh it’s very early days to be talking about things like this so unfortunately I can’t confirm anything but I’ll pass along the message.

  • It’s great to hear about a new Nier game. The first one was a classic with great characters, story line, combat system and music. Game play footage looks promising. This is one of the most anticipated titles for me!

  • Yoko Taro? Akihiko Yoshida? Keiichi Okabe? Platinum Games? 60 fps? Oh SE, you’re spoiling us!

  • Can’t wait for the new Neir game as I enjoyed the original one so much

  • I’m such a huge fan of Nier and I am ecstatic that we are getting a new chapter in the series. Why can we not have female characters that dress like they’re just people, more specifically people who are engaged in combat? Don’t write it off that she’s some kind of android or has no gender because she was very clearly designed to have the appearance of a human female. The same was true of Drakengard. When we have male characters, they are dressed to be warriors. Why do the women always have to be pop idols and sex objects? STOP MAKING WOMEN VALUED BY THEIR SEX APPEAL! Please get rid of that ridiculous skirt thing and the high heels and I would like to not have to see her genitals everytime I kick flip. For such a pioneering game that clearly does not have the mass appeal audience in mind, this could be so much more sensitive to obvious cultural issues of our time.

  • I see Keiichi Okabe is confirmed as the composer which as awesome, but there’s a notable omission – what is Emi Evan’s involvement with the project? The music was amazing but it won’t be the same without the fantastic vocals.

    • Sorry, I can’t confirm anything to do with Emi Evans but it is still early days so if we have any news, I’ll be sure to share it when the time comes.

  • Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job I’ve had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $100 per hour. I work through this link. wallstreet34.com

  • I have only one question. When can I preorder this beauty?

  • Hello team. Loved the trailer. The game looks fantastic and you just sold me on it just for the gameplay and the team behind it.

It was hard but I got a hold of a copy of the original game the past month. Is there any chance we might see a digital release of the original Nier, whether for PS3 or PS4? That would be amazing as I think more people should give this game a chance.

Best of luck and keep up the good work. Hope to see this game in 2016!

    • You should never say never but I’m afraid a digital release of the original NIER is highly unlikely. Luckily you won’t have to play the original to understand and know what’s going on in NieR: Automata when it comes out

  • I about cried tears of joy just reading this article just knowing pretty much everyone who helped make thee original will be on this ESPECIALLY the original music composer. The music of the original is easily hands down some of the best music I’ve ever heard in a game (yeah I just said that) and not some ambient elevator music that’s just there for background noise like most games today.
Hopefully we get multiple endings and new game plus like the original game as well!

  • Please make a official twitter account for NieR. I seldom use facebook.

  • I know porting the first game would be quite an undertaking, but I feel like if any last gen game deserved a current gen re-release, I’d be Nier. Considering that most enemies and attacks are composed of swirly textures, I imagine the graphics could seriously utilize current gen hardware, even without any remodeling or engine update. There’s also the fact that Replicant wasn’t released internationally. I think fans would love the chance to play the original narrative, even if it was done with subtitles. If porting is gonna be a hassle, then why not just go for the “Definitive Edition” treatment. I know that Square has… interesting policies… when it comes to ports and patches, as evidenced by KH 2.5. I suppose I can only support the release of this new one and hope that its popular enough to warrant a demanding and lucrative fanbase. If Dishonored can be ported to PS4, and FF7 can be remade from the ground up, then somewhere in the middle, games like Nier can find their way to current gen consoles.

  • I like 2B’s footwear, thigh boots are amazing!

  • I haven’t played the original NiER but, the NiER: Automata looks great. I’d love to play it sometime, when it releases.

  • I am excited for this title, but have concerns regarding a North American release. The last game was censored and changed because it’s what they thought American gamers wanted/needed. I hope the Automata we get in the States is the same version Japan gets. If not, I’ll just have to import again.

  • Is NieR: Automata a Ps4 exclusive or a timed exclusive?

  • I heard good things about ‘Nier’, but I never got around to picking it up. After hearing Platinum Games was working on a sequel, I bought it immediately. I just finished it, all endings. Such a great game, wonderful characters and a beautiful soundtrack. I can not wait for the sequel, it’s looking beautiful in motion. My plan was to pick up a PS4 when ‘Final Fantasy XV’ came out, but not anymore. I will be buying a PS4 the day ‘Automata’ is released.
