Hardware: Rivals Coming to PS4

Hi everyone! My name’s Dan, and I’m here today to tell you about a new upcoming game — Hardware: Rivals, coming exclusively to PS4 via PlayStation Store!

As some of our veteran readers may recognize, this new game builds upon the legacy of a PS2 title, “Hardware: Online Arena”, a vehicle-based combat game that was one of the very first online gaming experiences for PlayStation back in 2002.

We’re a new internal development group here at Sony Computer Entertainment and we’re all very fond of the original game (and some of the team even worked on it!). Armed with PS4, we leapt at the chance to put a new coat of paint on an old friend.

We’ve taken the opportunity to introduce a truckload of upgrades and new features, but the spirit of the original gameplay remains the same. Bringing back the explosive mayhem and online rivalry of vehicle combat has been an absolute pleasure, and we can’t wait for you to get behind the wheel.

Hardware: RivalsHardware: Rivals

With multiple maps, game modes, challenges, and special events, Hardware: Rivals lets you jump online for some frenetic vehicle-on-vehicle combat. You can go in as a lone wolf or as part of a team, and on top of our regular game modes we also have a constantly updating schedule of special events that add new twists to the game.

Fast Attack Vehicles give you agility and quick access to those tricky weapon pickups, but you can’t get complacent out in the open. Tanks are less nimble but can take a hit and bring hefty firepower and a formidable presence to the battlefield.

Hardware: Rivals

You’ll be able to challenge your friends and hunt down your rivals. Wear your colors proudly and unlock vehicle upgrades to tweak your ride to your own personal taste. Here on the development team we have daily debates over which vehicles and weapons are the best, and we can’t wait to hear what you think.

Keep an eye on the blog for more information, as we’re going to be running a Beta in the near future. It’ll be a great opportunity for us to get your feedback and welcome everyone back to the arena. See you there!

  • Game looks great! I always love tank combat. Definitely looking forward to the beta. Is this game going to have a single player mode as well?

  • Looks like a lot of fun! I look forward to seeing more on the game and hopefully get to play the beta.

  • Battlefield Heroes?

  • This looks interesting. Hopefully you’re investing heavily on customization options beyond just coats of paint. The game needs a huge amount of custom weapon parts and not just how they look on the vehicle but how they sound, smoke trails and so on. We might all be firing rockets but why not let each player customize the pitch, color and overall style of the rocket when it fires.

  • Looks like so much fun and I especially love the music. Gives me that bugs vs Elmer vibe from the classic loony toons. Curious though if this a F2P title or full purchase. Either way I am game but it just looks like a F2P game to me.

  • This could be the next Rocket League if they make it PS+ free, and it has similar attitude of Free DLC post launch, and is as awesome to play as it looks.

  • I’m always glad to see another PS exclusive join the ranks. I know you’re focusing on online, but this game seems like a good candidate for local multiplayer, too. Might that be an option in the future?

  • Is this game coming out in 2015 or 2016?

You gave us nothing to go off of in regards to how much more work need’s to go into this game before it’s done.

Game reveal trailer looked fun but it felt a little unfinished as well.

  • Very cool! Do you plan to include a local, split-screen, couch co-op game mode?

  • This looks like so much fun especially if it were Multi-player couch competitive too! I look forward to it and best of luck during Development everyone!!

  • I hope it is going to be in ps+ free game list same as rocket league. looks sweet!

  • So when is this releasing? 2016?

  • You are absolutely clueless when it comes to the wants of this community Sony. I can’t believe you are remaking this game and are boasting about it being a legacy title. While it’s true this was one of the first online PS2 games… however you sure picked one that was irrelevant. I would like to point out SOCOM 1 U.S. Navy Seals released in August 2002 and Hardware Online Arena followed later in November 2002. One of these two game pioneered Sonys online network, rivaled Halo in popularity, had more players online than the entire Xbox Live network combined and founded competitive console online gaming (hello gamebattles). Hint it wasn’t Hardware Online Arena. Our SOCOM community has been begging you for a remake or remaster of SOCOM 1/2 for years now and you do this? Thanks for ignoring the 13,000+ votes on your very own blog share, numerous invidiual campaign pushes and 1,000’s of tweets requesting SOCOM be remade. For the players.. yeah right.

    • lol…. dude, what does this have to do with Socom? This is a blog post / game from SCE’s Connected Content Group in Europe. These are former devs/members of the team that made the PS2 game “Hardware: Online Arena”. It was their game. They had the idea/desire to make a sequel and because you don’t need a big team for such a game, their bosses said “Okay”.

So what does this have to do with Socom again? It’s a totally different team, which has nothing to do with Socom, it isn’t located in the USA and it is a rather small-ish dev team.

So take you hate and keep it. There are a lot of people out there (like me) which are happy that Hardware: Rivals is coming. It’s time for more car-combat games and these guys here are doing the right thing.

If you want to cry about SOCOM, at least do it when a SCEA developer is posting. Stop annoying these SCEE guys here.

  • we want socom HD remaster already, stop ignoring us. why remake this and ignore socom?

we dont want a new COD/BF ripoff of socom, we want a classic SOCOM 1/2 socom. stop treating the socom franchise like a red headed stepchild.

  • Reading the Socom mentions in these comments made me smile! I was just about to say the same thing, this is cool but where’s SOCOM!? Still nothing on playstation anymore that compares :(

  • Local Multiplayer, please!

  • Looks really neat, please don’t be F2P…

  • Seriously, Sony. Stop with the titles we don’t want. Every Twitter or other social media campaign is dominated by fans wanting SOCOM and you throw them under the bus every time. Yet the reason Sony had any success online on the PS2 was because of the series. The only reason the series failed on the PS3 is because it wasn’t SOCOM and you tried to make it into something it wasn’t. People are begging for this game and you’re throwing out games that nobody asked for. Stop the madness!

    • Who is “we”? Stop talking for other people. There are a lot of happy fans out there, because Hardware: Rivals got announced. Check some gaming boards, if you want. Damn, I AM happy as hell.

      So talk for yourself.

  • No doubt, fellas. It’s really cool of Sony to do all these remakes and such, but it’d be a lot cooler if a SOCOM remaster was at the top of the list. Socrack!

  • For all those mentioning socom, pls remember that they could be developing a new amazing version (but ultimately broken at launch) of the socom series! Or it could just lack a developer to pick it up either way just cuz we all ask for it does not mean sony is purposefully ignoring our entitled demands, but rather they are putting out info about games coming that are ready to be announced !

  • What do we have to do to get a SOCOM 1/2 remake? The SOCOM community has voted on all of your polls (with huge numbers), tweeted during your building the list campaign, and wrote letters to you requesting a SOCOM game. Many of us thought online multilayer was the reason behind it not being remade, now we know that isn’t the case. SOCOM laid the foundation for online console gaming and competitive gaming. Please stop ignoring the SOCOM community and remake SOCOM 1/2 with online multilayer.

  • We want SOCOM Remastered. Wake up Sony!!

  • Can we get some more indies for the most powerful system ever made please?

  • Socom was the reason why I went out and bought the HDD for my PS2 and connected on-line day 1 Socom 1 hit the shelves. Quit ignoring the fans of Socom and remaster Socom 1 or 2 in HD. We have dominated the blog share request with over 13,000 up votes, 1000’s of twitter request using the proper resources and nothing, not even a comment. Bring back Socom, or at least let us know if it’s a possibility.

    • Sony, Stop ignoring your fan base. Its quite embarrassing having to constantly post about this in every blog, site and social media trying ti get your undesired attention.

  • Since we never got Hardware PS2 in the States, this is just 100% surprise to me. And I gotta say, it looks awesome! I love vehicle combat and combat racers, but I’m no fan of Twisted Metal’s more recent “desperate gritty” style & tone. The “Hey man! 11 year olds find me edgy!”-vibe is just stupid to me. I remember looking around at Twisted Metal 2, Vigilante 8, BattleTanx Global Assault, Motor Mayhem or Full Auto 2: Battlelines and all of those were colorful, fun, and explosive – they just looked like chaotic good times! Not trying to be Gritty; just trying to show off cars blowing each other up like it should be :) With color and special FX and explosions!

I’m looking forward to this A LOT!

  • Vocal SOCOM fans; stop whining. It’s bad form. Pay attention to THIS game here or don’t post.

And stop falling into the trap of “I’m angry; clearly the majority of the community must think like me!”. Why not put up a petition and try and drum up some real numbers. Some REAL show of support. The Xenosaga HD Collection fan petition just set itself up at a mere 20k and barely hit half that; really deflated their argument. Now it’s your turn.

Either prove yourselves “the majority” or find out you’re in the minority and be quiet – there are SO MANY MILITARY SHOOTERS out for SO MANY PLATFORMS now. You can play CS:GO. You can play H-Hour: World’s Elite. You can play Dirty Bomb. You can play Rainbow Six: Siege. Whatever. Just either actually show something or PLEASE be quiet. Because spamming comments sections and acting entitled is what babies do.

  • Bring back the classic PS2 SOCOM games next.

    • And as for the Socom comments I would only be interested if they brought it back with online because thats really how it was meant to be played.

  • I love Car Combat games such as Twisted Metal, Vigilante 8, Rouge Trip, etc. so this one has my intention.

  • We’re still waiting on a Socom 1/2 remastered Sony!! What is going on here? I never even heard of this game. This is starting to ridiculous here. Stop ignoring us and give us what we truly want. And that’s a Socom remake.

  • Yes, this ist the right way………jiiiiiaaaaaaaaa

One off the best games …for EVVVVEEEERRRRR!

    I hope this no Joke!

I need two PS4 for this game.

    Greatings to all HOA-FANS!!!

  • Hell yeah!! finaly! i did already start a patition a few years ago for a HOA HD classic games….got alot of positive likes on that, and now it’s coming in an even better version then i (we all) could have hoped for.
Thank you so so so much Playstation. Clans will be united again. Old friends will meet again and new ones will rise….old against new. Can’t wait to shoot a rail gun up some boddies ass. Boom shakalaka!!!!!!!!!! Your fragged!!

  • One of my old favourite games on the playstation was extreme games, racing causing pileups. It was an hilarious game as the challenge was to take out other racers any way you can.

  • I am bored with shooters, played them to death for many years. I am a mature gamer as I was on my mid 20s when ps1 was released. Got to see and play an awesome array of games over the past 20 years. I love going back and taking a look at some of the classics and think just how much better they would look now.

  • one other game I would love to see remade for ps4 is Red Dead Redemption, spent many hours playing that. Was fun running around sniping players
