PS4 System Software 3.00 Features Detailed, Beta Starts Today

We’ve been busy preparing our next major system software update for PS4, version 3.00 (codename: Kenshin). The update is packed with content, and we wanted to give you a quick glance at its key features.

If you were selected for our beta program, you’ll get to see these features first-hand very soon. Keep in mind, some of this content might not make it into the final version — that’s why we’re having a beta, after all. We’ve added new ways to connect with friends and players around the world, expanding the social capabilities of the system even further.

PlayStation

  • Online storage capacity increase — PS4 online storage capacity has increased from 1GB to 10GB for all PS Plus members. In 3.00 system software, you’ll see that we added a handy usage meter to monitor your available storage capacity, and a new Auto-Upload menu has been added to Application Saved Data Management.
  • YouTube live — PS4 owners will be able to livestream gameplay to YouTube. Livestreams will be viewable across YouTube, including on the new YouTube Gaming mobile app and website.
  • Events — A new hub for events has been added, giving an overview of activities taking place in the games you play most, as well as official broadcasts. For instance, you may see an update for a Double XP weekend, a special enemy appearing at a scheduled time, or seasonal events like in-game towns being decorated for the winter. You’ll also receive notifications when the event starts, or if the timing changes.
  • Favorite Groups — Favorite Groups has been added to the Friends app, letting you quickly access groups of people you like to play games with frequently. This will make the process of getting a game session up and running even easier.
  • Communities — PS4 users will have the ability to create communities based around shared interests, like games, genres, and more. Communities include a message board with general discussion, screenshots shared by players, and the ability to join parties / games. If you want to tackle a big multiplayer raid, but don’t have enough friends available, this could be a great way to connect with other players who are looking for the same thing.
  • Sharing video clips to Twitter — Users will have the ability to share video clips directly to Twitter. Maximum video length is 10 seconds, though you’ll have the ability to trim longer clips.
  • Stickers — Tired of typing out messages? With this update, you’ll be able to send stickers to friends through your messages.
  • Now Playing / What’s New — The Now Playing screen will display even more information about what your friends are doing, and you’ll be able to quickly jump into a game, party, request a screen share, or get sent to the PS Store to buy the game your friend is playing – further enhancing the social relationship with your friends online.
  • Live from PlayStation — We’ve improved the Live From PlayStation app, making it easier to view popular trending broadcasts in real time.
  • Request to watch gameplay — Want to view a friend’s gameplay session? Now you can send a ‘Request to Watch’ notification to a player. (Updated text)

There’s more included in this update, but that’s a quick glance at some of the items we’re excited about the most. We’ll be back with more info about Kenshin soon, including the launch timing.

  • looking forward to all the new features…should be very cool. Thanks!

  • Please add an option to remap buttons for each game separately!

  • Can’t wait to see this live!

  • Can you fix the problem with the rest mode. Most times after systems been in rest mode the ps4 will not load a different game via a disk. You have to reset the ps4 to make this happen.

  • Can’t wait for the update! I wonder when they will put USB Storage or External Storage for games that one feature I want to see come to ps4 software

  • Modifiable homescreens should be at the top of your list Sony. Read the comments and listen to the community.

  • sigh.. that’s it? other than you cloud storage going to 10GB there isn’t anything there worth mentioning. do they even listen to what people actually want? ffs let us get folders to manage our games. let me change my damn gamertag. and youtube streaming is doa anyway. waste of time and effort.

  • Fails to address a single thing #BetterPSN asked for. Thanks for listening to player feedback.

  • I Hope. I’m IN As Well. :)

  • Make black ops 2

  • Can we please get video chat partys and can you please for the love of got fix the NAT type issues in partys!

  • all of these new features are nice but all I really want is the ability to appear away or offline… :/

  • wow, you can watch you’re friends play. That sounds like it could be very useful

  • STILL no option to appear offline? Seriously, what’s the ETA on this Sony?!

    Next year?

    two years from now?

have to wait til the PS5?

It’s frankly getting pretty ridiculous at this point.

The Xbox One can do it, and has since launch, even the 360 could, and it’s not like they have a patent on it or anything.

I’m seriously reconsidering renewing my Plus subscription if there’s never gonna be an update on this.

  • Let me remove from my library those games that I downloaded once and will never play again.

Plus friend notifications , app pinning. And customization of the dashboard. Let me decide what it on my screen and give me folders to organize it with.

Finally , ad – based ps+ membership. Yep. Now everyone is can be on Playstation Network for free. The free people will have advertisements on their screen, paid members will not .

Trust me, people will pay to remove ads and ps+ will become the cash cow that you want to to be!

  • Please tell me that they’re fixing the share play feature in this update. Me not any of my friends have been able to do it since the 2.5 update back around March.

  • Allright first off you guys know this info u given is the information from that of the leaks that we found out about oh i dont know say A FEW WEEKS AGO this info has leaked onto the internet and has ben sitting a few weeks now how about u do something like oh i dont know telling us something we dont know the sentence of today is something we dont know do u understand sony something we dont know u understand that your late to the game when it comes to this post

  • Yes more upload storage, thanks sony. Also, update kenshin or samurai x? :)

  • “Online storage capacity increase — PS4 online storage capacity has increased from 1GB to 10GB for all PS Plus members”
That’s awesome news. Can we get this on PS3 too or 10GB to share for both consoles? RPG saves take up a lot of space…

  • Minor detail, but it would be nice if blurays showed the title/cover art in the menu instead of the generic disc. PS3 has this feature.

  • Please, Universal Bluetooth support. ‘This all I humbly request

    • +1. My PX4 headset was specifically made with the PS4 in mind, so why do I have to connect it to my controller in order to chat or to use in-game voice commands? Huge step backwards.

    • please… you and other dimwits that keep asking for this… read my reply to someone on page 3 and do some research before whining….

    • Maybe if you read what I said on page 3 before posting you wouldn’t look so ignorant. whining for BT for every headset out there like the PS3 can is never going to happen, get it through your heads.

  • Excellent update, but why not grant beta access to everyone who applied?
I am really looking forward to the enhanced social features, but I still would like to see a redesign of the PDM so that the friends list will be more prominent. It’s too hidden, compared to what we have on PS3. When a person turns on their PS3, the first thing they (generally speaking) will do is scroll to the friends list to see who’s on, what they’re playing, what their status message says etc..
But on PS4, I never feel tempted to navigate to my friends list unless I’m actually wanting to play or party chat with someone. It’s just some tucked-away, barebones list and it isn’t interesting. Please update this. The PS4 is supposed to be the most socially-connected system ever, but in some ways it feels far less connected than the previous generation.

    • I didnt get in ether and i was 1 of the early sign ups im just assuming anyway cause i didnt receive a beta code and i probably wont thats alright screw sony anyway

  • Awesome PlayStation something more to brag about do you know any release date

  • I’m just going to assume Sony is going to take a step back and see how all of Microsoft’s new upcoming features play out and affects it’s subscriber base before doing anything drastic to improve it’s service. I’ll say this now, though — PlayStation Now has GOTZ TA GO! or be very, very modified, because I’m not paying jakk extra, especially with Xbox One supporting backwards capability.

    • M$ doesn’t have BC…. you have to DL a digital version of a game you just stuck the disc in….. ya they dont’ charge you for the game again,…. but it’s not BC. you’re not playing off YOUR disc…. you’re filling up your HD with another copy…..

    • Actually dragonirons if u had watched the microsoft e3 press conference u would know theres an update comeing out in the fall for xbox one users that will enable backwards compatibility u know theres more to life then being a sony cheerleader u little pre pubescent girl who will use up here that not even her stepdad will want her

    • Who will use up her body

    • actually you insulting little child… I DID watch the conference and that’s EXACTLY what Mark said when he explained it. They never said anything there about any update….. If you had a digital 360 game you will see a X1 compatible version pop up in your download list…. if it’s one they approve to put on there that is….

If you have 360 discs… you stick the disc in and it unlocks the digital version for you to download….

AND THIS is what they were calling BC….

    • and since my last post will prolyl be deleted cause of a internet link……

really….. I’m a halfwit loser and ignorant? First off, go watch the Microsoft Press Conference – E3 2015 video copy from GameSpot.

Do this thing called actual research and using your ears to listen if that’s even possible….. go to 46:05 when he introduces Mike. I pretty much quoted him word for word…… so…. me posting the correct info makes me ignorant? I’m … a halfwit loser cause…. what I actually know what I’m talking about? You people need to grow the F up…

  • This is the 3rd major update and the PS4 has only been out almost a year. At this rate the PS community will definitely get the most requested features asked for in due time. Sony has their road map for the features that they intend to add post launch so they have to balance those with what the community requests. Also remember that the PS4 is meant to be a social gaming platform and they did address features like cross- game chat, an expanded friends list, and YouTube support. This is a major update so I imagine there’s at least a few more things that weren’t mentioned. I’m sure this will launch before The Taken King as the Community feature sounds very similar to LFG.

  • Please add support to copy save game data from one user to other user just like ps one old days

  • Thank you for the new features but please, PLEASE give us the ability to use folders so we can organize or home screens.

  • 10GB of cloud storage already is a winner in my book!

  • I hope the PS4 will play PS1,PS2 and PS3 games in the future.

  • External Hard Drive Support?? Please!

    • ………………… why do so many people whine about this? You can stick a bigger drive IN the console, M$ wont’ let u do that….. You’d rather have more crap laying around next to your console?

    • Dragonirons its MS NOT M$ have a nice day

  • WOW! What an amazing firmware update! I’m especially grateful for the increase in data storage (I use it ALL the time and have had to 86 some saves and data in order to stay under 1GB). Thank you so much for putting the player first!

Also, the bevy of social interaction improvements is a bit mind blowing! As a developer myself, I can imagine some of what it would take to accomplish what you are proposing in this list. I’m frankly gobsmacked at the amount of work you’ve put into Kenshin.

TLDR: Thank you! Thank you so much!

  • Has it been released yet?

  • Still no avatars on ps4??

  • Look this is all well and good but what about backwards compatibility??

NOTE – yes i’m fully aware that PS3 games will NEVER play on a PS4 due to different development pipelines and different architecture before any one moans.

but at the very least PS1 game would be, and even possibly PS2.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-ps1-ps2-games-heading-to-ps4

Granted 2 years old but more than possible!!

    • Just imagine dusting off Resident Evil DC, or Soul Reaver and playing them on the PS4!!

    • To you and all the other dimwits whiing about PS1 / 2 BC…. you can’t use those discs in a PS4 morons….. now digital emulation… maybe they’ll release more games that’re compatible since the emulation’s built INTO the game…. A lot of those are able to run on the Vita. But to use the DISC you need the HARDWARE. d’oh….

    • example, idk why PS1 discs work in any PS3… but PS2 discs need the PS2 emotion or w/e chip and that’s NOT in PS3’s after the fat one. Whining for PS3 BC is even funnier, they’re sure as hell not going to put the PS3 cell processor in any PS4s…..

    • Because the PS1 is weak enough by modern standards that it can be easily emulated in software. One reason is that the PS1 didn’t have much in the way of a specialized GPU. The only console that generation that had one was the N64.

    • Moron if the ps3 has backwards compatibility and i know cause i own one of the original 80gb ps3 systems the fat ones then theres no excuse for why the ps4 dose not have it no excuses at all its shame how the ps3 a last gen console less powerful console at that has a feature that the ps4 this high performance system with high end tech inside this 1080p 60fps dosent have do u not understand how lame this makes sony look they are makeing the ps3 look more powerful then ps4 theyr takeing steps backwards they r doing the same stupid crap microsoft did with the xbox 1 but yet no 1 has the balls to call them on it except me and if were up to me sony wouldve done ben gone by now thats how dissatisfied i am with them matter of fact i hope they get taken down for good by whatever hacker group gets them next cause u know they will get hacked again they cant stop getting hacked or taken down

    • Ownly a matter of time

    • oh, and uh… you actually think Sony’s going to go into production of the old Emotion engine chips just to put them in PS4’s for the VERY FEW (seriously compared to how many own a PS4.. it is very few) people constantly whining to play games from the late 90’s, 2000? Get a clue….

    • And ya…. it was in the PS3…. and they were losing so much money on it they had to make the slim and take out all the crap the MAJORITY didn’t give a crap about…… including that…

    • LOL Vex… you crack me up…. The fat PS3’s have BC for PS2 cause THEY HAVE THE PS2 EMOTION CHIP IN IT you dolt. You want to play your PS2 games forever then do what I did and go on AMAZON and buy a f’ing NEW PS2 Slim while there’s still some left….. They stopped making them in 2013. I now have 2 PS2’s, one in the closet as a backup that’ll proly never have to be used.

Or get a Vita you can get a lot of PS2 and PS1 games to work on there.

    • correction, vita dont’ have PS2 games…..

    • The 80GB is not the original. It was 60GB or 20GB FAT were the original 2 models. They had hardware B/C, while the one you are referring to had PS2 Software emulation. It was not as good as the hardware, and had a lot of issues with games, bugs, freezing, not loading properly, etc. Some games weren’t supported at all.

Not saying the PS4 couldn’t handle the software emulation of PS1(duh) and PS2 games without issues, but don’t argue that the 2nd model PS3 was perfect, because it wasn’t.

That’s most likely why they scrapped the software support for all future models, because they couldn’t guarantee compatibility, and didn’t want people buying it thinking it would function well for a particular game, and then have it crash, or damage the console. Sometimes it’s not a matter of “Can it?”, but “Should it?” instead.

    • Backwards compatibility…nothing needs to be said. Damn it Sony, we want it…at least get the classics going from PS1 and PS2. I know you’re pushing your Playstation Now, but it’s value is only there for people that want all those games from PS3, which for many is not worth because we already have those games that we wanted. Speaking of which, bringing that price down might help.

Local media storage and playback – definitely this is still a priority. There was a bit of an uproar when it was announced that this wouldn’t be a part of the PS4 at launch and we’re closing in on TWO years now and still no ability to do this. That is absolutely bonkers.

    • “To you and all the other dimwits whiing about PS1 / 2 BC…. you can’t use those discs in a PS4 morons”

      *citation needed

ps1/ps2 games are just cd and dvd discs. the system is physically able to read them, so anything beyond that can be handled via software.

    • Are you being sarcastic? Just checking, because I’d LOVE to finally unplug and my discard my PS3. Unfortunately, it does everything I need as far as media is concerned, while the PS4 collects dust between playing a handful of decent gashes. Completely stupid for Sony to take such an enormous step backwards in creating a device that should be considered essential in a living space.

In before “Then switch to a PC” trolls.

    • Oh yes sonys development of the ps4 is lacking and seriously disapointing i thought i was the ownly one who knew this or even thinks this they r takeing steps backwards thats what ive ben trying to tell everyone wake them up tell them do not support it but they r i need a group a big and it needs to petition sony to change whats wrong first starting free online mutiplayer fixing lack of backwards compatibility lack of games lack of of development and personal picks a twitch app email app like the vita and a facebook app

    • I forgot snap

    • I dont think people understand the importance example your playthrough will run more smoothly

  • 10GB Cloud Storage. Thanks, I’ve been waiting for this! Still waiting on folders, friend online notification, how long ago friend was on, etc. I didn’t get access to this Beta, but I’m not missing much.

  • I just want to be able to watch any Twitch/youtube stream from my ps4. Why are we only limited to PS4 streams :(

  • What about the non social features we’ve been requesting ? – namely the ability to hide your online status when you want to play a single player game and not get bombarded with COD invites – c’mon Sony – I promise to buy more games if you give us this much sought after feature.

  • Has the invites gone out yet

  • Thank you Playstation Nation!! The storage capacity increase will be a relief and I wanna see the communities! It will be nice to join some Final Fantasy communities and meet more new gamers. :)

  • So join the destiny community

  • Damn, all I see are people complaining when at the end it clearly says that these aren’t the only features added but the highlighted ones. This is why they are only choosing a few people for the test. I’d be happy with all these cool features. Thanks Sony!

  • Where is ONLINE FRIEND NOTFICATIONS?
    Same for CUSTOM WALLPAPERS?
    Also APPEAR OFFLINE FROM FRIENDS?
I wouldn’t mind having FOLDERS AS WELL
Plz Sony :( Can you add any of the above?

  • How about lossless PNG file support for screen shots?
The Xbox One has had this for months now and all of the screen shots look much better because of it.
The artifacting and color noise is very bad on the high compression PS4 screens.

It would be an easy integration and a huge improvement in quality. It just seems like a no brainer to add this.

  • Bluetooth headset compatibility. You can do it, PlayStation…

  • This is sick but idk if I did not see it but plz add it to were ppl in your party’s can be herd in the video so I can make group videos that would make my day

  • I guess I wasn’t accepted, as I didn’t see an email. Nor did I get a PSN message.

It’s cool, I’ll get to use them when it goes public. I wanted to check out the forums.

  • Maybe SONY Surprise Us With This Update :)

    OOvOO Video Chat.

    External HD support.

    Friends Notifications.

    Custom Backgrounds From Our Library.

    Change PSN ID.

    Folders/ Games/ Pin/Unpin/Show/Hide Stuff We Won’t To Use.

Some New Features in ShortCuts (PS Button) Save Data To Cloud/Sync
Even Better; if We Could Add, What We Want There.

    Auto Trophy Sync.

    Tracking Trophy Progress.

  • I’m always loyal to Sony all the way to end and I would love to test out the 3.0 Update.

  • Dammm! This update rocks! I want to say best one so far but every major update has been so awesome. I actually really excited for the event list and all the social changes, specifically the request broadcast and communities!

  • I remember back when I was one of the first 150 ppl that signed up for PSN on Ps3 launch day. Since then I have never been selected to be part of a beta program…. Hope that I can get in on this and add some input! Thanks PlayStation.
