PS4 Update 2.50 “Yukimura” Preview: Suspend/Resume and More

PS4 Logo

While developing the PlayStation 4 system, our hardware and software teams relied on feedback from our community of developers. The result is the most innovative and forward-thinking gaming console in the market today. Since launch, PlayStation has continued that trend of listening to feedback by bringing some of the most highly requested features from the PlayStation Nation to PS4 with each of our system software updates. When we unveiled PS4 two years ago, we announced Suspend/Resume, a feature that would enable PS4 users to jump in and out of their games faster than ever. This has been a feature gamers have been excited about since then, and today I am honored to officially confirm that system software update 2.50, “Yukimura,” will soon deliver Suspend/Resume, as well as a number of other requested features to PS4.

Suspend/Resume, which will be supported by nearly all PS4 titles, will create an atmosphere where your games are immediately available at any time — just pick up your DualShock 4 wireless controller, hit the PS button and get right back into the action of your games. When it’s time to log off, simply put your PS4 in Rest Mode and when you power up the next time, you’ll start your game where you left off. Spend less time getting into your games and more time playing them.

Here are some of the other highly requested new features and changes coming soon in “Yukimura:”

  • Sub-account to Master account Upgrade: Users with a sub-account will now be able to upgrade to a master account directly from their PS4 when they turn 18, removing restrictions for chat, enabling users to fund their own wallet, make purchases and more. Currently, users can upgrade their sub-accounts online at https://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/.
  • Facebook Friend Search: Gamers globally have jumped into PS4 as a redefined social gaming experience and connecting with friends over the network is a huge part of what makes the PS4 community so special. PlayStation now lets you go even bigger by connecting with your Facebook friends on PS4 using your linked account. Search for Facebook friends who are PlayStation Network members and build on the foundation of Friends you already have in your list.
  • Remote Play & Share Play at 60 fps: For games that support 60 fps, the ability to customize the frame rate of Remote Play and Share Play will be added with “Yukimura.” Play to your bandwidth strengths and use this option to stream gameplay at 60 or 30 fps when using Remote Play or Share Play on supported devices.
  • Accessibility Options: “Yukimura” introduces a wide variety of options to make their PS4 entertainment experience even more accessible. Options include text to speech, enlarged text, bolder fonts, higher contrast UI, zoom for displayed pictures, invert colors on screen and more. Users will also be able to reassign buttons for DualShock 4, making it easier for users with limited manual dexterity or limited reach and strength to play.
  • Trophy Improvements: We have received a ton of feedback to improve Trophies. In “Yukimura,” a screenshot will automatically be captured at the moment a Trophy is earned, making it easier than ever for you to share your greatest gaming moments with your friends. We’re also adding more sorting options along with the new ability to remove games from the Trophy list that have 0% completion.
  • Share Video Clips to Dailymotion: When sharing standout PS4 moments via the Share button on DualShock 4, “Yukimura” will allow players to upload directly to Dailymotion.

Stay tuned for more information on “Yukimura” and, as always, let us know in the comments how we can continue to improve PS4 to make it the best place to play.

    that’s what I see missing.

  • Can you turn off the screenshot option for trophies? Seems like a waste of memory really.

  • Nice to see so much great features being added!
I m extremly happy with the thropy option!! But i m still missing one big thing: when can i see my friends logging in? I want a pop up when my friends are online. I can see them joining parties (which i dont really care about, but i can see why its handy) but not when my friends log in.

Also i would like to add a photo ( that i took with my phone or that i found on the internet) as my background. Customization of the background would be very nice. But the themes are getting better, so its not a must for me :)

  • Great to hear that we are getting a new update (we’re a bit overdue). There are some questions that I’d like to ask however.

    1. Will External HDD support be in 2.50? Or is it still in the works?
    2. When is PlayStation Music rolling out?
    3. Is a Full Media Player (photos, music, video) in development?
    4. Can we get Custom Backgrounds in the near future?
    5. DLNA, 60fps Capture Gameplay and more media apps.
    6. UK date for PlayStation Now.

    Many Thanks

  • I too want new avatars!

Maybe some Hotline Miami masks or something!

  • Webbrowser : The option to safe pictures from the internet on your hdd like the ps3 had was very appriciated. And the Zooming in option was good /better aswell. On ps4 you cant safe/copy pics to hdd. The zoom-in has 3 standard zooms, a ‘infinite’/self-choosing? zoom like ps3 was working great. These can be 2 good improvements for the webbrowser.
(i know you can take screens onto your ps4 hdd, but only having the picture is better then the picture with serounding webpage).

  • Appear offline? That would be all I need.

  • Make ps2 classics playable on ps4 and Vita

  • How about this 4k resolution movies I read that this was supposed to be a feature from day one. Was there ever any truth to that. Because that was my primary reason for buying my 65″ Sony 4K TV. Will this ever be a feature. I’ve always been a huge Sony and playstation fanatic so I’m looking forward to your response.

  • How about adding support for drivingwheels that the PS3 supported?
We are a lot of drivingame-fans sitting with expensive equipment that doesn’t work on the PS4
I have not bought a driving game yet, and won’t do until my Logitech G27 works on my PS4 – how hard could it be?
Look at all the petitions all around the internet concerning compatibility and usb drivers for our screensavers..
Please forward this to your superiors, we’re begging you..

  • Read steeringwheels, not screensavers.. crappy autocorrect..

  • Some good features, but still no ability to play video’s via an external HDD or use your PS4 as a media hub (as per the PS3) is still very disappointing.

  • Having the ability to add an external hard drive to save video games and other data. I don’t want to have to unscrew and purchase an internal drive. Back up and restore. Then in a few years do all that again. The simple plug and play of a hard drive is convenience to a tee.

  • Playstation wishlist:
Sync Facebook Messenger with Playstation chat.
Redesign PS Vita Home menus. And more apps.
Make PS dynamic menu more custom.
Apply Skype to Party Video chat.
Playstation Now and Vue in EU and US. On PS3 PS4 and PSVita.
    Better Photo-Gallery on PS4.
Aility to watch Netflix while playing.
Wake up alarm and News app on PS4.
    Better browser.
    Mouse and keyboard compatible PS4.
    Dual screen on PS4

  • Love PS4 and the hardware is better than Xbox one but I am jealous of some of the xbox one software. Please add the following:
    DLNA support.
Video Chat with friends in party while playing game.
    Friend notifications.
    Folders.

  • Also Virgin media Tv anywhere app would be nice. I might be missing something but I still haven’t seen anything of the ps4 and virgin media friendship yet? There was a bit of hype an I it VM and ps4 partnership and to stay tuned but I haven’t seen anything yet?

  • Again my wishes for future firmware. Most important wishes have a ‘!’

! Backup function: Plug in a device on USB (USB flash drive, external hard drive) to save every Byte on it (games, game patches, game saves, demos, photos etc.)

! Capture videos in 1080p and 60 frames per second

    Comment function in “What’s New”

! Copy multiple links and quotes from websites and messages like we know it from PS3

! Copy music (MP3, AAC etc.) on hard drive

! Create a folder to sort games and demos

! Different sound if someone joins a party (there was actually a different jingle before 2.0)

    DLNA

Increased time of voice-mails (30 seconds)

! Notification if a friend goes online/offline (with an option to select friends whom I would have a notification)

! Opportunity to be invisible for friends while logged-in in PSN

! Option to delete not whole game install file with patches of games but only the install file, so you can keep the game patch.

! Photo viewer from USB and save photos on PS4

    ! Playback of Audio-CD

  • [Continue]

PlayStation Store: Add a wish list.

! Save some messages like we know it from PS3

! Send several pictures at once. This should be also possible for messages on Twitter.

! Support for Sony Bluetooth Headsets from PS3 (those with only a microphone)

! View photos from USB flash drive and hard drive and save them on PS4’s hard drive

View trophies even when you are offline (it worked fine on PS3)

! Watch videos from USB flash drive and PS4’s hard drive … in short: please bring a media player!

  • To be honest you guys are doing a pretty great job, but since you guys are pretty open about taking in feedback here’s some of mine. Personally, I’d love it if the Playstation now library allowed me to access games I owned on my PS3 that were linked to my Playstation Plus account, why should I have to pay to rent games I already have access to on a PS3 when they are linked to my account history of purchases? Also, please bring back as much of the classic PSone and PS2 era stuff that you can, we’re dieing out here for some nostalgia! Also, push to make demos or trials more available, I remember the good old days of Playstation demo discs and Playstation Underground demos letting me play games months upon months before release, now we’re lucky if we even get a demo when the game has already been released, which really is a bummer. Seriously though, keep up the good work and just try to listen us, we’re your fans and your subscribers after all!

  • I have a ps4 from Japan and my confirmation button is O and my back button is X.
Is it now possible to change them back to normal with X for confirmation and O for back?

  • Sounds great.

How about adding an option to log into psn as invisible to appear offline?

  • The console’s been out well over a year, I still can’t watch videos off of my thumb drive, no DNLA. Something I could do with PS3, XBox 360, and could do if I’d chosen XBox One over PS4. This on top of the terrible lineup of PS+ this month, and that’s just sad.

Yes I read the post from #10, “We want PS4 versions of these features, not a cut/ paste from last gen. Stay tuned.” But we’ve stayed tuned for a while now. Every update people clamor for DNLA. How about in the meantime, you give us the cut/paste from last gen as a placeholder until you can upgrade us to PS4 versions of them?

  • Also, I’m glad you guys are giving us functions you think we will like, but please let us disable them. I don’t want “Friends You May Know”. I don’t know these people and I just want to be rid of it completely.

Also I wholeheartedly agree with #418, about letting us access our PS3 PS+ library via PS Now. I am sure that’s a licensing rights nightmare but if you could make it happen? That would be absolutely amazing.

  • @Zantriel:

Agree with you. I don’t want to be displayed in others “Friends You May Know”, especially not with my real name! I want to keep my privacy. Privacy options didn’t help, they don’t work.

  • For the love of god let me delete a game from my trophy list that has more than 0%.

  • are sony ever going to allow camera chat with friends, like we used to do on the ps3… you might even sell a lot more cameras if you did…. its not worth paying £60 just to watch and play around with a load of silly robots on the screen.. we want party chat with friends NOW

  • Wtf is a Yukimura?

  • Best news I’ve heard in YEARS, especially theoOption to reassign buttons for disabled players with muscular desease who can’t push the L/R3 buttons/sticks properly. Or for the average gamer who, like me, can not fathom why the heck some game companies force you to fight with an unplayable controller scheme. I still can’t get over the fact that in FFXII you couldn’t change the camera panning for the x-axis. That pretty much ruined the whole game for me. Nitpicking, I know, but still… anyways, great job and I hope this will sptread to other consoles too, like, say, you know, the one from this company who invented this windowy os? Perhaps this could be done on last gen consoles too? Please? Still playing the good old PS3…

  • All these features are great, I’m really liking the abiltity to remove 0% complete games from the trophy list. Are we ever going to see an update that will allow us to use the DS4 when using Remote Play? I use Remote Play while my girlfriend watches TV sometimes, but some games are just too hard to play well using the VITA.

    Keep up the great work!

  • the only reason I have moved from pc Steam to PS4 was the lack of local co-op / split screen games on pc where the same titles on ps3 had it. But just to find out that console gaming has also moved away from this epic feature. and with no dlna support either I recognise my mistake in the move.

  • Any chance we might see Hitbox as a streaming service pretty soon? I would also love the ability to record longer gameplay clips, with the current limit i cant even upload a full fight in EA Sports UFC to my youtube

  • not sure if this is just a UK store problem but there’s a bug that has been left for far too long now it’s ridiculous and costing you money, basically when your ps4 has been connected to psn on for a certain amount of time you won’t be able to access the store and when you do all you get is a blank blue screen with no “Please wait” or loading icon and the only way to access the store from this point is either signing out then back in again or disconnect then reconnect the wifi or lan cable. This is not just isolated to me either as Ive had to teach many of my friends how to work around this now ancient and ridiculous bug.

  • I really only have two wishes for a future system software update; one big, one small.

1.) Support for a multimedia remote controller. I’ve got every home electronics device in my living room (amplifier, TV, DVD player, PS3, media centre computer, … you name it) controlled by my Logitech harmony remote. Every device, except the newest and shiniest, my PS4. Such a shame.

2.) Blu-ray disc icon. I mean, seriously. All (?) blu-ray discs have an icon included. Surely showing this icon instead of a generic disc symbol isn’t all that difficult?!

Other than that though I don’t really have that much to wish for that hasn’t been mentioned over and over in this thread anyway.

Hardware-wise it’d be awesome if the next redesign of the PS4 (there were several redesigns of the PS3, I’m guessing there’ll eventually be redesigns of the PS4 too) would have 802.11ac, bluetooth 4, and usb 3.1 including controllers with usb type-c connectors. Other than that the hardware is great (obviously it’d be nice with a fanless design, but I’ll stay realistic :P).

  • And hey, you don’t have to pay for network gaming on Steam!!!

  • and you don’t have to wait for these stupid updates. On Steam, everything you ever wished for is already there

  • Who are the people that even care or want to upload to dailymotion?

  • Removal of trophies at 0% is great, but really wish that could go up to 5%.

  • Finally trophy sorting options. My OCD has been going for too long.

  • Is a folder feature to organize our games in the works or planned?

Basically the same simple system Steam has where you create a folder and put the games you want in it.

Right now I think the system is very unpractical and unnecessarily clumsy. Instead of a long horizontal list, I’d rather have a few folders with apps, games I’m playing, games I finished and games I want to play. Then when selecting those I get a drop down menu with the games included in the folder.

That would make everything so much simpler. :-)

  • Chiming along with others…..custom backs, media player, USB flash and can’t forget PSX/PS2 emulation and unlock multiplayer. My time online with and without + felt no different than PS3.

  • All of these new features sound fantastic but, what about the MOST requested feature? The ability to change our PSN ID. Is it even being considered? I know many people (my included) would PAY to be able to do this just to prevent immature people from abusing the feature. Please add PSN ID change.

  • I really want to be able to set my own wallpapers, like on PS3! Especially now I can take screen shots from any game!!!!! Why was this feature taken away, why?!?!

  • As someone who is visually impaired, thank you thank you thank you for adding text to speech. I suspect this will be a some-what limited feature, but I can not wait to navigate my ps4 with more freedom.

  • Please add the feature to delete any game from your trohies list , because some games have online trophys and are old and have closed their servers so there is no way to get the trophies

  • Would be interesting and doubly rewarding if you could unlock new, game-related profile pictures by obtaining certain important or difficult trophies. Just a few for each game would probably add that extra incentive and make it easier to show off your gaming milestones.

  • I’m reading the reply for #41 and I disagree. If I want to delete a game I’ve platinum. I should have every right to do so. Just let the user confirm and give them a warning its not coming back after being remove. Simple.

  • External Hard drive support? WHEN?

  • I would love to be able to take screenshots from games and turn them into themes/backrounds
